On finite categories of algebraic varieties

Abstract:We prove that the finiteness of a finitely generated category of irreducible algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero is decidable. We also obtain a Burnside finiteness criterion for such a category, with applications to algebraic dynamical systems of several maps.

Abstract:Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. Denote by the category of finitely generated R -modules. In this paper, we investigate the finiteness of the radii of resolving subcategories of with respect to a fixed semidualizing module. As an application, we give a partial positive answer to a conjecture of Dao and Takahashi: we prove that for a Cohen–Macaulay local ring R , a resolving subcategory of has infinite radius whenever it contains a canonical module and a non-MCM module of finite injective dimension.

Abstract:The finitistic dimension of a triangulated category is introduced. For the category of perfect complexes over a ring it is shown that this dimension is finite if and only if the small finitistic dimension of the ring is finite.

On $g$-finiteness in the category of projective presentations

Abstract:We provide new equivalent conditions for an algebra $\Lambda$ to be $g$-finite, analogous to those established by L. Demonet, O. Iyama, and G. Jasso, but within the category of projective presentations $\mathcal{K}^{[-1,0]}(\text{proj} \Lambda)$. We show that an algebra has finitely many isomorphism classes of basic $2$-term silting objects if and only if all cotorsion pairs in $\mathcal{K}^{[-1,0]}(\text{proj} \Lambda)$ are complete. Furthermore, we establish that this criterion is also equivalent to all thick subcategories in $\mathcal{K}^{[-1,0]}(\text{proj} \Lambda)$ having enough injective and projective objects.

Abstract:We assign functorially a $\mathbb{Z}$-lattice with semisimple Frobenius action to each abelian variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This establishes an equivalence of categories that describes abelian varieties over $\mathbb{F}_p$ avoiding $\sqrt{p}$ as an eigenvalue of Frobenius in terms of simple commutative algebra. The result extends the isomorphism classification of Waterhouse and Deligne's equivalence for ordinary abelian varieties.

This paper presents a sufficient condition for the subcategory P-i((sic)) of mod (sic) to be contravariantly finite in mod (sic), where P-i((sic)) is the subcategory of mod (sic) consisting of (sic)-modules of projective dimension less than or equal to i. As an application of this condition it is shown that P-i((sic)) is contravariantly finite in mod (sic) for each i when (sic) is stably equivalent to a hereditary algebra.

Abstract:We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the finite separability of finitely generated commutative rings. Namely, we prove that every such ring is a finite extension of its torsion ideal $I_k$ where $k$ is square-free, and $I_k$ is a subdirect product of a finite ring and finitely many zero divisor-free rings of prime characteristic each of which is an entire extension of any of its infinite monogenic subrings.

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the stability for Gorenstein categories in [36] and [24]; and show that the relative Auslander algebra of a CM-finite algebra is CM-free. On the other hand, we describe the bounded derived category, and the Gorenstein defect category introduced in [11], via Gorenstein-projective objects; and we show that the Gorenstein defect category of a CM-finite algebra is triangle-equivalent to the singularity category of its relative Auslander algebra.

Abstract:We clarify the relation between the subcategory D hf b (A) of homological finite objects in D b (A) and the subcategory K b (P) of perfect complexes in D b (A), by giving two classes of abelian categories A with enough projective objects such that D hf b (A) = K b (P), and finding an example such that D hf b (A) ≠ K b (P). We realize the bounded derived category D b (A) as a Verdier quotient of the relative derived category D C b (A), where C is an arbitrary resolving contravariantly finite subcategory of A: Using this relative derived categories, we get categorical resolutions of a class of bounded derived categories of module categories of infinite global dimension. We prove that if an Artin algebra A of infinite global dimension has a module T with inj.dimT < ∞ such that ⊥T is finite, then D b (modA) admits a categorical resolution; and that for a CM (Cohen-Macaulay)-finite Gorenstein algebra, such a categorical resolution is weakly crepant.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian local ring and denote by $\operatorname{mod} R$ the category of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we give some evaluations of the singular locus of $R$ and annihilators of Tor and Ext from a viewpoint of the finiteness of dimensions/radii of full subcategories of $\operatorname{mod} R$. As an application, we recover a theorem of Dey and Takahashi when $R$ is Cohen--Macaulay. Moreover, we obtain the divergence of the dimensions of specific full subcategories of $\operatorname{mod} R$ in non-Cohen--Macaulay case.

Parabolic-equivariant modules over polynomial rings in infinitely many variables

Abstract:We study the category of $\mathbf{P}$-equivariant modules over the infinite variable polynomial ring, where $\mathbf{P}$ denotes the subgroup of the infinite general linear group $\mathbf{GL}(\mathbf{C}^\infty)$ consisting of elements fixing a flag in $\mathbf{C}^\infty$ with each graded piece infinite-dimensional. We decompose the category into simpler pieces that can be described combinatorially, and prove a number of finiteness results, such as finite generation of local cohomology and rationality of Hilbert series. Furthermore, we show that this category is equivalent to the category of representations of a particular combinatorial category generalizing $\mathbf{FI}$.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry there is a well-known categorical equivalence between the category of normal proper integral curves over a field $k$ and the category of finitely generated field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. In this paper we generalize this equivalence to the category of normal quasi-compact universally closed separated integral $k$-schemes of dimension $1$ and the category of field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. Our key technique are morphisms of finite expansion which can be considered as relaxation of morphisms of finite type. Since the schemes in the generalized category have many properties similar to normal proper integral curves, we call them normal integral universally closed curves over $k$.
Acyclic complexes of injectives and finitistic dimensions

Abstract:For a ring $A$, we consider the question whether every bounded above cochain complex of injective $A$-modules which is acyclic is null-homotopic. We show that if $A$ is left and right noetherian and has a dualizing complex, then this implies that the finitistic dimension of $A$ is finite. In the appendix, Nakamura and Thompson show that the opposite holds over any ring. Our results give several new necessary and sufficient conditions for a ring to have finite finitistic dimension in a very general setting. Applications include a generalization of a recent result of Rickard about relations between unbounded derived categories and finitistic dimension, as well as several new characterizations of noetherian rings which satisfy the Gorenstein symmetry conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that if $B\subseteq A$ is an extension of finite dimensional algebras such that the projective dimension of $A/B$ as a $B$-bimodule is finite, if $A$ has finite finitistic dimension, then so does $B$. We exhibit examples demonstrating that the algebra $B$ appearing in such an extension can be more complicated than $A$.

Abstract:An algebraic theory, sometimes called an equational theory, is a theory defined by finitary operations and equations, such as the theories of groups and of rings. It is well known that algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathbf{Set}$. In this paper, we generalize this phenomenon to locally finitely presentable categories using partial Horn logic. For each locally finitely presentable category $\mathscr{A}$, we define an "algebraic concept" relative to $\mathscr{A}$, which will be called an $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theory, and show that $\mathscr{A}$-relative algebraic theories are equivalent to finitary monads on $\mathscr{A}$. In establishing such equivalence, a generalized Birkhoff's variety theorem plays an important role.

Abstract:We explore some properties of wide subcategories of the category mod$\,(\Lambda)$ of finitely generated left $\Lambda$-modules, for some artin algebra $\Lambda.$ In particular we look at wide finitely generated subcategories and give a connection with the class of standard modules and standardly stratified algebras. Furthermore, for a wide class $\mathcal{X}$ in mod$\,(\Lambda),$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions to see that $\mathcal{X}=\mathrm{pres}\,(P),$ for some projective $\Lambda$-module $P;$ and finally, a connection with ring epimorphisms is given.

Abstract:We explore new interactions between finite model theory and a number of classical streams of universal algebra and semigroup theory. A key result is an example of a finite algebra whose variety is not finitely axiomatisable in first order logic, but which has first order definable finite membership problem. This algebra witnesses the simultaneous failure of the Łos-Tarski Theorem, the SP-preservation theorem and Birkhoff's HSP-preservation theorem at the finite level as well as providing a negative solution to a first order formulation of the long-standing Eilenberg Schützenberger problem. The example also shows that a pseudovariety without any finite pseudo-identity basis may be finitely axiomatisable in first order logic. Other results include the undecidability of deciding first order definability of the pseudovariety of a finite algebra and a mapping from any fixed template constraint satisfaction problem to a first order equivalent variety membership problem, thereby providing examples of variety membership problems complete in each of the classes $\texttt{L}$, $\texttt{NL}$, $\texttt{Mod}_p(\texttt{L})$, $\texttt{P}$, and infinitely many others (depending on complexity-theoretic assumptions).

Abstract:Recently, Amnon Neeman settled a bold conjecture by Antieau, Gepner, and Heller regarding the relationship between the regularity of finite-dimensional noetherian schemes and the existence of bounded $t$-structures on their derived categories of perfect complexes. In this paper, using different methods, we prove some very general results about the existence of bounded $t$-structures on (not necessarily algebraic or topological) triangulated categories and their invariance under completion. We show that if the opposite category of an essentially small triangulated category has finite finitistic dimension in our sense, then the existence of a bounded t-structure on it forces it to be equal to its completion. We also prove a parallel result regarding the equivalence of all bounded t-structures on any intermediate triangulated category between the starting category and its completion. Our general treatment, when specialized to the case of schemes, immediately gives us Neeman's theorem as an application and significantly generalizes another remarkable theorem by Neeman about the equivalence of bounded $t$-structures on the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. When specialized to other cases like associative rings, nonpositive DG-rings, connective $\mathbb{E}_1$-rings, triangulated categories without models, etc., we get many other applications. Under mild finiteness assumptions, these results not only give a categorical obstruction (the singularity category in our sense) to the existence of bounded $t$-structures on a triangulated category, but also provide plenty of triangulated categories on which all bounded $t$-structures are equivalent. The strategy used in our treatment is introducing a new concept of finitistic dimension for triangulated categories and lifting $t$-structures along completions of triangulated categories.
