Abstract:Facing with grave climate change and enormous energy demand, catalyzer gets more and more important due to its significant effect on reducing fossil fuels consumption. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by water splitting are feasible ways to produce clean sustainable energy. Here we systematically explored atomic structures and related STM images of Se defects in PtSe2. The equilibrium fractions of vacancies under variable conditions were detailly predicted. Besides, we found the vacancies are highly kinetic stable, without recovering or aggregation. The Se vacancies in PtSe2 can dramatically enhance the HER performance, comparing with, even better than Pt(111). Beyond, we firstly revealed that PtSe2 monolayer with Se vacancies is also a good OER catalyst. The excellent bipolar catalysis of Se vacancies were further confirmed by experimental measurements. We produced defective PtSe2 by direct selenization of Pt foil at 773 K using a CVD process. Then we observed the HER and OER performance of defective PtSe2 is much highly efficient than Pt foils by a series of measurements. Our work with compelling theoretical and experimental studies indicates PtSe2 with Se defects is an ideal bipolar candidate for HER and OER.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper This paper aims to address the following issues: 1. **Development of Efficient Catalysts**: In the face of severe climate change and enormous energy demands, developing efficient catalysts to reduce fossil fuel consumption has become particularly important. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through water electrolysis are feasible methods for producing clean and sustainable energy. 2. **Defect Engineering of Two-Dimensional Materials**: Platinum selenide (PtSe₂), as a two-dimensional material, exhibits excellent catalytic performance in HER and OER. However, the specific structural defects and their impact on catalytic performance are not yet fully understood. By introducing selenium vacancies (Se vacancies), the HER performance of PtSe₂ can be significantly enhanced, and it has been found that monolayer PtSe₂ with selenium vacancies is also a good OER catalyst. 3. **Theoretical and Experimental Validation**: Ab initio simulations predict the structure, stability, and catalytic performance of selenium vacancies in PtSe₂ under different conditions, and these predictions are validated through experimental methods. The results show that PtSe₂ with selenium vacancies has extremely high efficiency in HER and OER. 4. **Bipolar Catalytic Mechanism**: The stability and electron capture characteristics of selenium vacancies in PtSe₂ were studied, revealing their bipolar catalytic mechanism in HER and OER. Particularly, Se-2V exhibits excellent OER catalytic performance, which is a rare phenomenon in platinum-based materials. 5. **Application Prospects**: Defect regulation can significantly improve the catalytic performance of materials, providing new avenues for the practical application of Pt-based materials in HER and OER. Additionally, this study provides a similar mechanism reference for other defect-containing two-dimensional platinum-based materials (such as PtS₂ and PtTe₂). In summary, this paper systematically explores the structure, stability, and catalytic performance of selenium vacancy defects in PtSe₂, and through theoretical and experimental validation, demonstrates the superior performance of defect-containing PtSe₂ in HER and OER. This provides an important theoretical foundation and technical support for the development of efficient catalysts.
