Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new family of refinable functions named pseudo box splines which generalize univariate pseudo-splines to the multivariate setting. The properties of pseudo box splines including stability and regularity are analyzed. Furthermore, we obtain a series of compactly supported C∞ refinable functions by applying nonstationary cascade algorithms to the masks of pseudo box splines. Using these functions, we construct compactly supported nonstationary C∞ tight wavelet frames in L2(Rs) with the spectral frame approximation order.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce complex pseudo splines that are derived from pseudo splines of type I. First, we show that the shifts of every complex pseudo spline are linearly independent. Therefore we can construct a biorthogonal wavelet system. Next, we investigate the Riesz basis property of the corresponding wavelet system generated by complex pseudo splines. The regularity of the complex pseudo splines will be analyzed. Furthermore, by using complex pseudo splines, we will construct symmetric or antisymmetric complex tight framelets with desired approximation order.

Abstract:We introduce an extension of cone splines and box splines to fractional and complex orders. These new families of multivariate splines are defined in the Fourier domain along certain $s$-dimensional meshes and include as special cases the three-directional box splines \cite{article:condat} and hex splines \cite{article:vandeville} previously considered by Condat, Van De Ville et al. These cone and hex splines of fractional and complex order generalize the univariate fractional and complex B-splines defined in \cite{article:ub,article:fbu} and investigated in, e.g., \cite{article:fm,article:mf}. Explicit time domain representations are derived for these splines on $3$-directional meshes. We present some properties of these two multivariate spline families such as recurrence, decay and refinement. Finally it is shown that a bivariate hex spline and its integer lattice translates form a Riesz basis of its linear span.

For a general quadrature functional with k - 1 algebraic precision, the average error of a complexification quadrature formula in the Sobolev space H(k) is obtained. Abstract:Box splines provide smooth spline spaces as shifts of a single generating function on a lattice and so generalize tensor-product splines. Their elegant theory is laid out in classical papers and a summarizing book. This compendium aims to succinctly but exhaustively survey symmetric low-degree box splines with special focus on two and three variables. Tables contrast the lattices, supports, analytic and reconstruction properties, and list available implementations and code.

Abstract:Box splines are considered as a natural generalization of univariate uniform B-splines. Box splines have local support and are positive in the interior of its support. The translates of box splines form a partition of unity. In this paper we extend the hierarchical paradigm of tensor product B-splines to box splines, which are called hierarchical box splines. We take the application of quartic smooth hierarchical box-splines in surface fitting as an example to demonstrate the adaptivity and flexibility of hierarchical box splines.

Abstract:We present a completeness characterization of box splines on three-directional triangulations, also called Type-I box spline spaces, based on edge-contact smoothness properties. For any given Type-I box spline, of specific maximum degree and order of global smoothness, our results allow to identify the local linear subspace of polynomials spanned by the box spline translates. We use the global super-smoothness properties of box splines as well as the additional super-smoothness conditions at edges to characterize the spline space spanned by the box spline translates. Subsequently, we prove the completeness of this space space with respect to the local polynomial space induced by the box spline translates. The completeness property allows the construction of hierarchical spaces spanned by the translates of box splines for any polynomial degree on multilevel Type-I grids. We provide a basis for these hierarchical box spline spaces under explicit geometric conditions of the domain.

Abstract:This paper presents a new kind of uniform spline curve, named trigonometric polynomialB-splines, over space Ω = span{sint, cost, tk-3,tk-4,…,t,1} of which k is an arbitrary integerlarger than or equal to 3. We show that trigonometric polynomial B-spline curves have many similarV properties to traditional B-splines. Based on the explicit representation of the curve we have also presented the subdivision formulae for this new kind of curve. Since the new spline can include both polynomial curves and trigonometric curves as special cases without rational form, it can be used as an efficient new model for geometric design in the fields of CAD/CAM.

Abstract:The existing methods for visualizing volumetric data are mostly based on piecewise linear models. And all kinds of analysis based on them have to be substituted by coarse interpolations. So both accuracy and reliability of the traditional framework for visualization and analysis of volumetric data are far from our needs of digging information implied in volumetric data fields. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on a C 2-continuous seven-directional box spline, under which reconstruction is of high accuracy and differential computations relative to analysis based on the reconstruction model are accurate. We introduce a polynomial differential operator to improve the reconstruction accuracy. In order to settle the difficulty of evaluating upon the seven-directional box spline, we convert it into Bézier form and propose effective theories and algorithms of extracting iso-surfaces, critical points and curvatures. Plentiful of examples are also given in this paper to illustrate that the novel framework is suitable for analysis, the improved reconstruction method has high accuracy, and our algorithms are fast and stable.
Explicit Formulas for Bicubic Spline Surface Interpolation

Abstract:In this paper, explicit formulas are developed for representing a uniform bicubic spline surface that passes through an array of data points. The interpolated surface in the closed case is topologically equivalent to a torus. Open surface cases are reduced to closed surface cases by introducing one or two rows of `free points' such that the spline surface wraps around its boundaries. Ordinary interpolation surfaces in open cases can thus be constructed with the same formulas. It turns to be more intuitive and effective to control and modify the shape of the resultant surfaces by adjusting `free points' than by the usual derivatives and twist vectors. The interpolation surface is obtained in a two step way and the procedure is very easy to implement. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed formulas are practically useful.

Abstract:Spline functions have long been used in numerical solution of differential equations. Recently it revives as isogeometric analysis, which offers integration of finite element analysis and NURBS based CAD into a single unified process. Usually many NURBS pieces are needed to build geometrically continuous CAD models. In this paper, we introduce some splines defined on branched covering of sphere, torus or general domains of $R^2$, which are called branched splines in this paper. A single piece of such splines is enough to build some complex CAD models. Multiresolution analysis on surfaces of high genus built from such splines can be carried out naturally. CAD and FEA are integrated directly on such models. A theoretical framework is presented in this paper, together with some simple examples.

Abstract:Let $P$ be orthogonal projection on B-splines of degree $r-1$ with equally spaced knots. Sweldens and Piessens proved that $P(x^r)-x^r$ is Bernoulli polynomial. We generalize Sweldens ans Piessens's result for box-splines. It gives the opportunity to define the seminorm of Sobolev space in terms of the asymptotic formula for the error in orthogonal projection.

Abstract:Given a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals in a ring, a generalized spline is a labeling of each vertex by a ring element so that adjacent vertices differ by an element of the ideal associated to the edge. We study splines over the ring Z/mZ. Previous work considered splines over domains, in which very different phenomena occur. For instance when the ring is the integers, the elements of bases for spline modules are indexed by the vertices of the graph. However we prove that over Z/mZ spline modules can essentially have any rank between 1 and n. Using the classification of finite Z-modules, we begin the work of classifying splines over Z/mZ and produce minimum generating sets for splines on cycles over Z/mZ. We close with many open questions.

Abstract:The fractal dimension is an indispensable tool bridging the two distinct fields of mathematics namely, the fractional calculus and the fractal geometry. Many works have elucidated a linear connection between the order of fractional calculus and the fractal dimension of a given continuous function. In this respect, the present work exclusively connects the order of Caputo-fractional derivative of a continuously differentiable function, defined on a real closed interval, with its box dimension. Meanwhile, the second part of the paper discusses the Caputo-fractional derivative of a special kind of spline fractal interpolation function and impose certain conditions on its scaling factors to prove the resultant function to be a fractal function yet again. Finally, making use of the results in the first part, the upper bound for the box dimension of newly obtained fractal interpolation function is estimated.

Abstract:This survey gives an overview of three central algebraic themes related to the study of splines: duality, group actions, and homology. Splines are piecewise polynomial functions of a prescribed order of smoothness on some subdivided domain D in R^k, and appear in applications ranging from approximation theory to geometric modeling to numerical analysis. Alternatively, splines can be interpreted as a collection of polynomials labeling the vertices of a (combinatorial) graph, with adjacent vertex-labels differing by a power of an affine linear form attached to the edge. In most cases of interest, the subdivided domain is essentially dual to the combinatorial graph, and these two characterizations of splines coincide. Properties of splines depend on combinatorics, topology, geometry, and symmetry of a simplicial or polyhedral subdivision of a region D in R^k, and are often quite subtle. We describe how duality, group actions, and homology -- techniques which play a central role in many areas of both pure and applied mathematics -- can be used to illuminate different questions about splines. Our target audience is nonspecialists: we provide a concrete introduction to these methods, and illustrate them with many examples in the context of splines. We also provide a tutorial on computational aspects: all of the objects appearing in this note may be studied using open source computer algebra software.

An algebraic framework for geometrically continuous splines

Abstract:Geometrically continuous splines are piecewise polynomial functions defined on a collection of patches which are stitched together through transition maps. They are called $G^{r}$-splines if, after composition with the transition maps, they are continuously differentiable functions to order $r$ on each pair of patches with stitched boundaries. This type of splines has been used to represent smooth shapes with complex topology for which (parametric) spline functions on fixed partitions are not sufficient. In this article, we develop new algebraic tools to analyze $G^r$-spline spaces. We define $G^{r}$-domains and transition maps using an algebraic approach, and establish an algebraic criterion to determine whether a piecewise function is $G^r$-continuous on the given domain. In the proposed framework, we construct a chain complex whose top homology is isomorphic to the $G^{r}$-spline space. This complex generalizes Billera-Schenck-Stillman homological complex used to study parametric splines. Additionally, we show how previous constructions of $G^r$-splines fit into this new algebraic framework, and present an algorithm to construct a bases for $G^r$-spline spaces. We illustrate how our algebraic approach works with concrete examples, and prove a dimension formula for the $G^r$-spline space in terms of invariants to the chain complex. In some special cases, explicit dimension formulas in terms of the degree of splines are also given.

Abstract:We uncover an unexpected connection between the physics of loop integrals and the mathematics of spline functions. One loop integrands are Laplace transforms of splines. This clarifies the geometry of the associated loop integrals, since a n-node spline has support on a n-vertex polyhedral cone. One-loop integrals are integrals of splines on a hyperbolic slice of the cone, yielding polytopes in AdS space. Splines thus give a geometrical counterpart to the rational function identities at the level of the integrand. Spline technology also allows for a clear, simple, algebraic decomposition of higher point loop integrals in lower dimensional kinematics in terms of lower point integrals — e.g. an hexagon integral in 2d kinematics can be written as a sum of scalar boxes. Higher loops can also be understood directly in terms of splines — they map onto spline convolutions, leading to an intriguing representation in terms of hyperbolic simplices integrated over other hyperbolic simplices. We finish with speculations on the interpretation of one-loop integrals as partition functions, inspired by the use of splines in counting points in polytopes.

Abstract:This paper begins by reviewing numerous theoretical advancements in the field of multivariate splines, primarily contributed by Professor Larry L. Schumaker. These foundational results have paved the way for a wide range of applications and computational techniques. The paper then proceeds to highlight various practical applications of multivariate splines. These include scattered data fitting and interpolation, the construction of smooth curves and surfaces, and the numerical solutions of various partial differential equations, encompassing both linear and nonlinear PDEs. Beyond these conventional and well-established uses, the paper introduces a novel application of multivariate splines in function value denoising. This innovative approach facilitates the creation of LKB splines, which are instrumental in approximating high-dimensional functions and effectively circumventing the curse of dimensionality.
