Abstract:In this paper, we study metric completions of triangulated categories in a representation-theoretic context. We provide a concrete description of completions of bounded derived categories of hereditary finite dimensional algebras of finite representation type. In order to investigate completions of bounded derived categories of algebras of finite global dimension, we define image and preimage metrics under a triangulated functor and use them to induce a triangulated equivalence between two completions. Furthermore, for a given metric on a triangulated category we construct a new, closely related good metric called the improvement and compare the respective completions.

Abstract:We give an elementary introduction to the theory of triangulated categories covering their axioms, homological algebra in triangulated categories, triangulated subcategories, and Verdier localization. We try to use a minimal set of axioms for triangulated categories and derive all other statements from these, including the existence of biproducts. We conclude with a list of examples.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a "category with path objects", as a slight strengthening of Kenneth Brown's classic notion of a "category of fibrant objects". We develop the basic properties of such a category and its associated homotopy category. Subsequently, we show how the exact completion of this homotopy category can be obtained as the homotopy category associated to a larger category with path objects, obtained by freely adjoining certain homotopy quotients. In a second part of this paper, we will present an application to models of constructive set theory. Although our work is partly motivated by recent developments in homotopy type theory, this paper is written purely in the language of homotopy theory and category theory, and we do not presuppose any familiarity with type theory on the side of the reader.

Abstract:We develop a general theory of 3-dimensional ``orbifold completion'', to describe (generalised) orbifolds of topological quantum field theories as well as all their defects. Given a semistrict 3-category $\mathcal{T}$ with adjoints for all 1- and 2-morphisms (more precisely, a Gray category with duals), we construct the 3-category $\mathcal{T}_{\textrm{orb}}$ as a Morita category of certain $E_1$-algebras in $\mathcal{T}$ which encode triangulation invariance. We prove that in $\mathcal{T}_{\textrm{orb}}$ again all 1- and 2-morphisms have adjoints, that it contains $\mathcal{T}$ as a full subcategory, and we argue, but do not prove, that it satisfies a universal property which implies $(\mathcal{T}_{\textrm{orb}})_{\textrm{orb}} \cong \mathcal{T}_{\textrm{orb}}$. This is a categorification of the work in [CR]. Orbifold completion by design allows us to lift the orbifold construction from closed TQFT to the much richer world of defect TQFTs. We illustrate this by constructing a universal 3-dimensional state sum model with all defects from first principles, and we explain how recent work on defects between Witt equivalent Reshetikhin--Turaev theories naturally appears as a special case of orbifold completion.

Homologically finite-dimensional objects in triangulated categories

Abstract:In this paper we investigate homologically finite-dimensional objects in the derived category of a given small dg-enhanced triangulated category. Using these we define reflexivity, hfd-closedness, and the Gorenstein property for triangulated categories, and discuss crepant categorical contractions. We illustrate the introduced notions on examples of categories of geometric and algebraic origin and provide geometric applications. In particular, we apply our results to prove a bijection between semiorthogonal decompositions of the derived category of a singular variety and the derived category of its smoothing with support on the central fiber.

Abstract:A class of triangulated categories with a finiteness condition is singled out. These triangulated categories have Auslander–Reiten triangles. It is proved that the relations of the Grothendieck group of a triangulated category in this class are generated by all Auslander–Reiten triangles. Moreover, the Auslander–Reiten quivers of certain triangulated categories in this class are described in terms of Dynkin diagrams.

Abstract:Neeman shows that the completion of a triangulated category with respect to a good metric yields a triangulated category. We compute completions of discrete cluster categories with respect to metrics induced by internal t-structures. In particular, for a coaisle metric this yields a new triangulated category which can be interpreted as a topological completion of the associated combinatorial model. Moreover, we show that the completion of any triangulated category with respect to an internal aisle metric is a thick subcategory of the triangulated category itself.

Abstract:We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories, with a particular focus on classes of examples of $\mathbb{F}_1$-linear nature. Our main results are analogues of theorems of Quillen and Schlichting, relating the $K$-theory or Grothendieck-Witt theories of proto-exact categories defined using the (hermitian) $Q$-construction and group completion.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of derived completion applicable to arbitrary homomorphisms of commutative S-algebras, and work out some of its properties, including invariance results, a spectral sequence proceeding from purely algebraic information to the geometric results, and analysis of relationships with earlier constructions. We also provide some examples. The construction has applications in algebraic K-theory.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a framework for localization theory of triangulated categories $\mathcal{C}$, that is, from a given extension-closed subcategory $\mathcal{N}$ of $\mathcal{C}$, we construct a natural extriangulated structure on $\mathcal{C}$ together with an exact functor $Q:\mathcal{C}\to\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ satisfying a suitable universality, which unifies several phenomena. Precisely, a given subcategory $\mathcal{N}$ is thick if and only if the localization $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ corresponds to a triangulated category. In this case, $Q$ is nothing other than the usual Verdier quotient. Furthermore, it is revealed that $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ is an exact category if and only if $\mathcal{N}$ satisfies a generating condition $\mathsf{cone}(\mathcal{N},\mathcal{N})=\mathcal{C}$. Such an (abelian) exact localization $\widetilde{\mathcal{C}}_\mathcal{N}$ provides a good understanding of some cohomological functors $\mathcal{C}\to\mathsf{Ab}$, e.g., the heart of $t$-structures on $\mathcal{C}$ and the abelian quotient of $\mathcal{C}$ by a cluster-tilting subcategory $\mathcal{N}$.

Gluing Approximable Triangulated Categories

Abstract:Given a bounded-above cochain complex of modules over a ring, it is standard to replace it by a projective resolution, and it is classical that doing so can be very useful. Recently, a modified version of this was introduced in triangulated categories other than the derived category of a ring. A triangulated category is approximable if this modified procedure is possible. Not surprisingly this has proved a powerful tool. For example: the fact that the derived category of a quasi compact, separated scheme is approximable has led to major improvements on old theorems due to Bondal, Van den Bergh and Rouquier. In this article we prove that, under weak hypotheses, the recollement of two approximable triangulated categories is approximable. In particular, this shows many of the triangulated categories that arise in noncommutative algebraic geometry are approximable. Furthermore, the lemmas and techniques developed in this article form a powerful toolbox which has interesting applications in existing and forthcoming work by the authors.

Abstract:These notes attempt to give a short survey of the approach to support theory and the study of lattices of triangulated subcategories through the machinery of tensor triangular geometry. One main aim is to introduce the material necessary to state and prove the local-to-global principle. In particular, we discuss Balmer's construction of the spectrum, generalised Rickard idempotents and support for compactly generated triangulated categories, and actions of tensor triangulated categories. Several examples are also given along the way. These notes are based on a series of lectures given during the Spring 2015 program on 'Interactions between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra' (IRTATCA) at the CRM in Barcelona.

Abstract:For any essentially small triangulated category the centre of its lattice of thick subcategories is introduced; it is a spatial frame and yields a notion of central support. A relative version of this centre recovers the support theory for tensor triangulated categories and provides a universal notion of cohomological support. Along the way we establish Mayer-Vietoris sequences for pairs of commuting subcategories.

Abstract:We give a classification of torsion pairs, t-structures, and co-t-structures in the Paquette-Yildirim completion of the Igusa-Todorov discrete cluster category. We prove that the aisles of t-structures and co-t-structures are in bijection with non-crossing partitions enriched with some additional data. We also observe that recollements exist in the completion and we classify them.

Abstract:The finitistic dimension of a triangulated category is introduced. For the category of perfect complexes over a ring it is shown that this dimension is finite if and only if the small finitistic dimension of the ring is finite.

Abstract:We modify the axioms of triangulated categories to include both higher triangles and distinguished maps of higher triangles. The distinguished maps are specializations of Neeman's ``good'' maps of $2$-triangles. The axioms both simplify Neeman's axioms in his 1991 paper and generalize them to higher triangles in the way proposed by Balmer et al. We provide a geometric formulation via directed truncated simplices to enable a more concrete approach. The axioms are modelled by homotopy and derived categories. We look at a number of key theorems including the fact that sums of maps of $2$-triangles are distinguished if and only if the maps are distinguished and a strong version of the $3$x$3$ lemma. These illustrate some key proof methods. We also show that maps of faces of distinguished triangles are distinguished. We construct some useful distinguished $5$-triangles.
