Abstract:In this paper, we study the twisted Gan-Gross-Prasad problem for classical groups over finite fields. We formulate a multiplicity formula for Deligne-Lusztig characters and give a complete answer for cuspidal representations arising from anisotropic torus modulo the center.

Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:We study the p-adic analogue of the arithmetic Gan-Gross-Prasad (GGP) conjectures for unitary groups. Let $\Pi$ be a hermitian cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_{n} x GL_{n+1} over a CM field, which is algebraic of minimal regular weight at infinity. We first show the rationality of twists of the ratio of L-values of $\Pi$ appearing in the GGP conjectures. Then, when $\Pi$ is p-ordinary at a prime p, we construct a cyclotomic p-adic L-function $L_p(M_\Pi)$ interpolating those twists. Finally, under some local assumptions, we prove a precise formula relating the first derivative of $L_p(M_\Pi)$ to the p-adic heights of Selmer classes arising from arithmetic diagonal cycles on unitary Shimura varieties. We deduce applications to the p-adic Beilinson-Bloch-Kato conjecture for the motive attached to $\Pi$. All proofs are based on some relative-trace formulas in p-adic coefficients.

Abstract:Let $F/\bbQ_p$ be a non-Archimedean local field, and $G_F$ be the absolute Galois group of $F$. Let $\rho_1$ and $\rho_2$ be two finite-dimensional complex representations of $G_F$. Let $\psi$ be a nontrivial additive character of $F$. Then, the question is: What is the twisting formula for the root number $W(\rho_1\otimes\rho_2,\psi)$?} In general, the answer to this question is not yet known. However, if one of $\rho_i \quad(i=1,2)$ is one-dimensional with ``sufficiently'' large conductor, then in [13], Deligne gave a twisting formula for $W(\rho_1\otimes\rho_2,\psi)$. Later, in [12], Deligne and Henniart gave a general twisting formula for a {\it zero}-dimensional virtual representation twisted by a finite-dimensional representation of $G_F$. In this paper, we first extend Deligne's twisting formula for U-isotropic Heisenberg representation of dimension prime $p$, then we further extend Deligne-Henniart's result. Finally, we provide two very important applications of our twisting formula: -- (i) invariant formula for the local root numbers for U-isotropic Heisenberg representations, and (ii) a converse theorem on the Galois side.

The Gan-Gross-Prasad period of Klingen Eisenstein families over unitary groups

Abstract:In this article, we compute the Gan-Gross-Prasad period integral of Klingen Eisenstein series over the unitary group $\mathrm{U}(m+1, n+1)$ with a cuspidal automorphic form over $\mathrm{U}(m+1, n)$, and show that it is related to certain special Rankin-Selberg $L$-values. We $p$-adically interpolate these Gan-Gross-Prasad period integrals as the Klingen Eisenstein series and the cuspidal automorphic form vary in Hida families. As a byproduct, we obtain a $p$-adic $L$-function of Rankin-Selberg type over $\mathrm{U}(m,n) \times \mathrm{U}(m+1, n)$. The ultimate motivation is to show the $p$-primitive property of Klingen Eisenstein series over unitary groups, by computing such Gan-Gross-Prasad period integrals, and this article is a starting point of this project. The $p$-primitivity of Eisenstein series is an essential property in the automorphic method in Iwasawa theory.

Abstract:We prove the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for $\left(\mathrm{U}\left(2n\right),\mathrm{U}\left(1\right)\right)$ in general and prove its refinement, namely the Ichino-Ikeda type explicit formula for the central $L$-values, under certain assumptions. Similarly, we also prove its split analogue, namely the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture and its refinement for $\left(\mathrm{GL}_{2n}, \mathrm{GL}_1\right) $ in general.

Abstract:Isolating cuspidal automorphic representations from the whole automorphic spectrum is a basic problem in the trace formula approach. For example, matrix coefficients of supercupidal representations can be used as test functions for this, which kills the continuous spectrum, but also a large class of cuspidal automorphic representations. For the case of number fields, multipliers of the Schwartz algebra is used in the recent work [3] to isolate all cuspidal spectrum which provide enough test functions and suitable for the comparison of orbital integrals. These multipliers are then applied to the proof of the Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for unitary groups [3,2]. In this article, we prove similar result on isolating the cuspidal spectrum in [3] for the function field case.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Abstract:In this note, we study the twisted Jacquet modules of sub-quotients of principal series representations of ${\rm GL}_2(D)$ where $D$ is a division algebra over a non-archimedean local field $F$. We begin with a proof of a conjecture due to D. Prasad on twisted Jacquet modules of Speh representations of ${\rm GL}_2(D)$ when $D$ is the quaternionic division algebra. Later, when $D$ is an arbitrary division algebra over $F$, we focus on depth-zero principal series and compute the dimensions of twisted Jacquet modules of generalised Speh representations and investigate their structure explicitly.

Abstract:We study the problem of determining the groups that can arise as the torsion subgroup of an elliptic curve over a fixed quadratic field, building on work of Kamienny-Najman, Krumm, and Trbović. By employing techniques to study rational points on curves developed by Bruin and Stoll, we determine the possible torsion subgroups of elliptic curves over quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for all squarefree $d$ with $|d| < 800$, improving on the previously known range of $-5 < d < 26$. We use our computations to study the validity of a conjecture of Granville concerning how many twists of a given hyperelliptic curve admit a nontrivial rational point.

Abstract:This paper verifies $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem for twisted gamma factors of irreducible cuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$, for $n\leq 5,$ and of irreducible generic representations, for $n<\frac{q-1}{2\sqrt{q}}+1$ in the appendix by Zhiwei Yun, where $p$ is a prime and q is a power of $p$. The counterpart of $n\times 1$ converse theorem for level zero cuspidal representations also follows the established relation between gamma factors of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathcal F})$ and that of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_q)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ denotes a $p$-adic field whose residue field is isomorphic to ${\mathbb F}_q.$ For $n=6,$ examples failed $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem over finite fields are provided and the authors propose a set of primitive representations, for which $n\times 1$ gamma factors should be able to detect a unique element in it. For $m, n\in {\mathbb N},$ in the spirit of Langlands functorial lifting, we formulate a conjecture to relate $n\times m$ gamma factors of finite fields with Gauss sums over extended fields.

Abstract:We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gon\c{c}alves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

Abstract:The twisted group ring isomorphism problem (TGRIP) is a variation of the classical group ring isomorphism problem. It asks whether the ring structure of the twisted group ring determines the group up to isomorphism. In this article, we study the TGRIP for direct product and central product of groups. We provide some criteria to answer the TGRIP for groups by answering the TGRIP for the associated quotients. As an application of these results, we provide several examples. Finally, we answer the TGRIP for extra-special p-groups, and for the groups of order $p^5$, where $p \geq 5$ is a prime, except a list of five groups.

Abstract:For any finite group $G$, the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of $[\mathbb{C}^r/G]$ can be viewed as a certain twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of the classifying stack $\mathcal{B} G$. In this paper, we use Tseng's orbifold quantum Riemann-Roch theorem to express the equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of $[\mathbb{C}^r/G]$ as a sum over Feynman graphs, where the weight of each graph is expressed in terms of descendant integrals over moduli spaces of stable curves and representations of $G$.
