Abstract:Physical arguments related with the existence of black hole solutions having a non trapping interior are discussed. Massive scalar fields interacting with gravity are considered. Interior asymptotic solutions showing a scalar field approaching a constant value at the horizon are given. It is argued that the coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations can be satisfied in the sense of the generalized functions after removing a particular regularization designed for matching the interior solution with an external Scwartzschild spacetime. The scalar field appears as just avoiding the appearance of closed trapped surfaces while coming from the exterior region. It also follows that the usual space integral over the temporal- temporal components of energy-momnetum tensor in the internal region just gives the total proper mass associated to the external Schwartzschild solution, as it should be expected.

Abstract:It is a standard fact that trapped or marginally trapped surfaces are not visible from conformal infinity, under the usual set of conditions on matter fields and the conformal completion, provided that the cosmological constant is non-positive. In this note we show that the situation is more delicate in the presence of a positive cosmological constant: we present examples of visible marginally trapped surfaces, and we provide a set of natural conditions which guarantee non-visibility.

Abstract:We analytically construct an infinite number of trapped toroids in spherically symmetric Cauchy hypersurfaces of the Einstein equations. We focus on initial data which represent "constant density stars" momentarily at rest. There exists an infinite number of constant mean curvature tori, but we also deal with more general configurations. The marginally trapped toroids have been found analytically and numerically; they are unstable. The topologically toroidal trapped surfaces appear in a finite region surrounded by the Schwarzschild horizon.

Abstract:In general relativity, nonsingular black holes contain (at least) a Cauchy horizon, a null hypersurface beyond which determinism breaks down. Even though the strong cosmic censorship conjecture establishes the impossibility of extending spacetime beyond this region, in this paper we investigate how far we can go, without invoking this conjecture, in the building of a physically reasonable black hole without a Cauchy hypersurface. Following this reasoning, we find a black hole lacking of Cauchy horizon, asymptotically flat and satisfying either the strong or dominant energy condition. The above is possible by demanding integrable singularity for the Ricci scalar, whose direct consequence is the appearance of finite tidal forces. We show that the spacetime inside the event horizon represents a warped anti-de Sitter spacetime, which might be interpreted in terms of a finite superposition of configurations.

Abstract:The supermassive black hole candidates at the center of every normal galaxy might be wormholes created in the early Universe and connecting either two different regions of our Universe or two different universes in a Multiverse model. Indeed, the origin of these supermassive objects is not well understood, topological non-trivial structures like wormholes are allowed both in general relativity and in alternative theories of gravity, and current observations cannot rule out such a possibility. In a few years, the VLTI instrument GRAVITY will have the capability to image blobs of plasma orbiting near the innermost stable circular orbit of SgrA^*, the supermassive black hole candidate in the Milky Way. The secondary image of a hot spot orbiting around a wormhole is substantially different from that of a hot spot around a black hole, because the photon capture sphere of the wormhole is much smaller. The radius of the photon capture sphere is independent of the hot spot model, and therefore its possible detection, which is observationally challenging but not out of reach, can unambiguously test if the center of our Galaxy harbors a wormhole rather than a black hole.

Abstract:Seven different refinements of trapped surfaces are proposed, each intended as potential stability conditions. This article concerns spherical symmetry, but each condition can be generalized. Involute trapped spheres satisfy a similar condition to minimal trapped spheres, which are are strictly minimal with respect to the Kodama vector. There is also a weaker version of involute trapped. Outer trapped spheres have positive surface gravity. Increasingly (future, respectively past) trapped spheres generate spheres which are more trapped in a (future, respectively past) causal direction, with three types: in any such causal direction, along the dual Kodama vector, and in some such causal direction. Assuming the null energy condition, the seven conditions form a strict hierarchy, in the above order. In static space-times, they reduce to three inequivalent definitions, namely minimal, outer and increasingly trapped spheres. For a widely considered class of so-called nice (or non-dirty) black holes, minimal trapped and outer trapped become equivalent. Reissner-Nordström black holes provide examples of this, and that increasingly trapped differs. Examples where all three refinements differ are provided by a simple family of dirty black holes parameterized by mass and singularity area.

No-hair and almost-no-hair results for static axisymmetric black holes and ultracompact objects in astrophysical environments

Abstract:No-hair theorems are uniqueness results constraining the form of the metric of black holes in general relativity. These theorems are typically formulated under idealized assumptions, involving a mixture of local (regularity of the horizon) and global aspects (vacuum spacetime and asymptotic flatness). This limits their applicability to astrophysical scenarios of interest such as binary black holes and accreting systems, as well as their extension to horizonless objects. A previous result due to Gürlebeck constrains the asymptotic multipolar structure of static spacetimes containing black holes surrounded by matter although not revealing the possible structure of the metric itself. In this work, we disentangle some of these assumptions in the static and axisymmetric case. Specifically: i) we show that only a one-parameter family of black-hole geometries is compatible with a given external gravitational field, ii) we also analyze the case in which the central object is close to forming an event horizon but is still horizonless and show that the deviations from the natural black-hole shape have to die off as one approaches the black hole limit under the physical principle that curvatures are bounded.

Infinite Volume of Noncommutative Black Hole Wrapped by Finite Surface

Abstract:The volume of a black hole under noncommutative spacetime background is found to be infinite, in contradiction with the surface area of a black hole, or its Bekenstein-Hawking (BH) entropy, which is well-known to be finite. Our result rules out the possibility of interpreting the entropy of a black hole by counting the number of modes wrapped inside its surface if the final evaporation stage can be properly treated. It implies the statistical interpretation for the BH entropy can be independent of the volume, provided spacetime is noncommutative. The effect of radiation back reaction is found to be small and doesn't influence the above conclusion.

Abstract:Using numerical simulations, we investigate the large-scale gravitational clustering in a flat universe dominated by cold plus hot dark matter (i.e., $\Omega_0=\ocdm+\ohdm+\obaryon=1$). Primordial density fluctuation spectrum is taken to have the Zel'dovich-Harrison form. Three models are studied, with Model I having $\ocdm=0.69$, $\obaryon=0.01$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in one flavor of neutrinos; Model II having $\ocdm=0.60$, $\obaryon=0.10$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in one flavor of neutrinos; Model III having $\ocdm=0.69$, $\obaryon=0.01$, and $\ohdm=0.30$ in three flavors of neutrinos. The initial density spectra are normalized by the COBE quadrupole measurement, and galaxies are identified from the peaks of initial density fields above a certain threshold chosen, to match the observed two-point correlation on scales $\ls 10\mpc$. Thus the clustering properties of both the mass and the galaxies are completely specified. The biasing parameter (for the `galaxies') determined in this way is $b_g\approx 1.2$ for Model I, 1.5 for Model II and 1.6 for Model III. The clustering and motions of the simulated `galaxies' are compared with recent observations. The spatial distributions of galaxies in the hybrid models are very frothy; filaments, sheets, voids etc. of sizes 10 -- 50$\mpc$ are frequently seen in the simulations.

Abstract:Working in a semi-classical setting, we consider solutions of the Einstein equations that exhibit light trapping in finite time according to distant observers. In spherical symmetry, we construct near-horizon quantities from the assumption of regularity of the renormalized expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor, and derive explicit coordinate transformations in the near-horizon region. We examine the boundary conditions appropriate for embedding the model into a cosmological background, describe their evaporation in the linear regime and highlight the observational consequences, while also discussing the implications for the laws of black hole mechanics.

On the non-existence of trapped surfaces under low-regularity bounds

Abstract:The emergence of trapped surfaces in solutions to the Einstein field equations is intimately tied to the well-posedness properties of the corresponding Cauchy problem in the low regularity regime. In this paper, we study the question of existence of trapped surfaces already at the level of the initial hypersurface when the scale invariant size of the Cauchy data is assumed to be bounded. Our main theorem states that no trapped surfaces can exist initially when the Cauchy data are close to the data induced on a spacelike hypersurface of Minkowski spacetime (not necessarily a flat hyperplane) in the Besov $B^{3/2}_{2,1}$ norm. We also discuss the question of extending the above result to the case when merely smallness in $H^{3/2}$ is assumed.

Abstract:We investigate static and dynamical n(\ge 6)-dimensional black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity of which horizons have the isometries of an (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space with a condition on its Weyl tensor originally given by Dotti and Gleiser. Defining a generalized Misner-Sharp quasi-local mass that satisfies the unified first law, we show that most of the properties of the quasi-local mass and the trapping horizon are shared with the case with horizons of constant curvature. It is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser solution is the unique vacuum solution if the warp factor on the (n-2)-dimensional Einstein space is non-constant. The quasi-local mass becomes constant for the Dotti-Gleiser black hole and satisfies the first law of the black-hole thermodynamics with its Wald entropy. In the non-negative curvature case with positive Gauss-Bonnet constant and zero cosmological constant, it is shown that the Dotti-Gleiser black hole is thermodynamically unstable. Even if it becomes locally stable for the non-zero cosmological constant, it cannot be globally stable for the positive cosmological constant.

Abstract:A general definition of a black hole is given, and general `laws of black-hole dynamics' derived. The definition involves something similar to an apparent horizon, a trapping horizon, defined as a hypersurface foliated by marginal surfaces of one of four non-degenerate types, described as future or past, and outer or inner. If the boundary of an inextendible trapped region is suitably regular, then it is a (possibly degenerate) trapping horizon. The future outer trapping horizon provides the definition of a black hole. Outer marginal surfaces have spherical or planar topology. Trapping horizons are null only in the instantaneously stationary case, and otherwise outer trapping horizons are spatial and inner trapping horizons are Lorentzian. Future outer trapping horizons have non-decreasing area form, constant only in the null case---the `second law'. A definition of the trapping gravity of an outer trapping horizon is given, generalizing surface gravity. The total trapping gravity of a compact outer marginal surface has an upper bound, attained if and only if the trapping gravity is constant---the `zeroth law'. The variation of the area form along an outer trapping horizon is determined by the trapping gravity and an energy flux---the `first law'.

Abstract:We investigate the generic behaviour of marginally trapped tubes (roughly time-evolved apparent horizons) using simple, spherically symmetric examples of dust and scalar field collapse/accretion onto pre-existing black holes. We find that given appropriate physical conditions the evolution of the marginally trapped tube may be either null, timelike, or spacelike and further that the marginally trapped two-sphere cross-sections may either expand or contract in area. Spacelike expansions occur when the matter falling into a black hole satisfies ρ − P ≤ 1/A, where A is the area of the horizon while ρ and P are respectively the density and pressure of the matter. Timelike evolutions occur when (ρ − P) is greater than this cut-off and so would be expected to be more common for large black holes. Physically they correspond to horizon 'jumps' as extreme conditions force the formation of new horizons outside the old.

Nonuniqueness of capped black holes: large and small bubbles

Abstract:We present a new non-BPS solution describing an asymptotically flat, stationary, bi-axisymmetric capped black hole in the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. This solution describes a spherical black hole, while the exterior region of the horizon exhibits a non-trivial topology of $[{\mathbb R}^4 \# {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2] \setminus {\mathbb B}^4$ on a timeslice. This solution extends our previously constructed three-parameter solution to a more general four-parameter solution. To derive this solution, we utilize a combination of the Ehlers and Harrison transformations and then impose appropriate boundary conditions on the solution's parameters. It can be shown that the resultant solution is free from curvature, conical, Dirac-Misner string and orbifold singularities, as well as closed timelike curves on and outside the horizon. Characterized by four independent conserved charges -- mass, two angular momenta, and electric charge -- this solution reveals two distinct branches: a small bubble branch and a large bubble branch, distinguished by non-conserved local quantities such as magnetic flux or magnetic potential. This shows the non-uniqueness for spherical black holes, even among capped black holes. For equivalent sets of conserved charges, we find that the large/small bubble branch can have larger/smaller entropy than the Cvetič-Youm black hole.

Abstract: We prove a scale-invariant, semi-global existence result and a trapped surface formation result in the context of coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, without symmetry assumptions. More precisely, we prove a scale-invariant semi-global existence theorem from past null-infinity and show that the focusing of the gravitational and/or chromoelectric-chromomagnetic waves could lead to the formation of a trapped surface. Adopting the signature for decay rates approach introduced in \cite{A19}, we develop a novel gauge (and scale) invariant hierarchy of non-linear estimates for the Yang-Mills curvature which, together with the estimates for the gravitational degrees of freedom, yields the desired semi-global existence result. Once semi-global existence has been established, the formation of a trapped surface follows from a standard ODE argument.

Abstract:Theoretically, it has been proposed that objects traveling radially along regular black holes (RBHs) would not be destroyed because of finite tidal forces and the absence of a singularity. However, the matter source allows the creation of an inner horizon linked to an unstable de Sitter core due to mass inflation instability. This inner horizon also gives rise to the appearance of a remnant, inhibiting complete evaporation. We introduce here a d-dimensional black hole model with Localized Sources of Matter (LSM), characterized by the absence of an inner horizon and featuring a central integrable singularity instead of an unstable de Sitter core. In our model, any object tracing a radial and timelike world-line would not be crushed by the singularity. This is attributed to finite tidal forces, the extendability of radial geodesics, and the weak nature of the singularity. Our LSM model enables the potential complete evaporation down to r h = 0 without forming a remnant. In higher dimensions, complete evaporation occurs through a phase transition, which could occur at Planck scales and be speculatively driven by the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). Unlike RBHs, our model satisfies the energy conditions. We demonstrate a linear correction to the conventional area law of entropy, distinct from the RBH's correction. Additionally, we investigate the stability of the solutions through the speed of sound.

Abstract:We show that a stationary asymptotically flat electro-vacuum solution of Einstein’s equations that is everywhere locally “almost isometric” to a Kerr–Newman solution cannot admit more than one event horizon. Axial symmetry is not assumed. In particular this implies that the assumption of a single event horizon in Alexakis–Ionescu–Klainerman’s proof of perturbative uniqueness of Kerr black holes is in fact unnecessary.
