Abstract:To every knot (or link) diagram K, we associate a cluster algebra A that contains a cluster x with the property that every cluster variable in x specializes to the Alexander polynomial of K. We call x the knot cluster of A. Furthermore, there exists a cluster automorphism of A of order two that maps the initial cluster to the cluster x. We realize this connection between knot theory and cluster algebras in two ways. In our previous work, we constructed indecomposable representations T(i) of the initial quiver Q of the cluster algebra A. Modulo the removal of 2-cycles, the quiver Q is the incidence quiver of the segments in K, and the representation T(i) of Q is built by taking successive boundaries of K cut open at the i-th segment. The relation to the Alexander polynomial stems from an isomorphism between the submodule lattice of T(i) and the lattice of Kauffman states of K relative to segment i. In the current article, we identify the knot cluster x in A via a sequence of mutations that we construct from a sequence of bigon reductions and generalized Reidemeister III moves on the diagram K. On the level of diagrams, this sequence first reduces K to the Hopf link, then reflects the Hopf link to its mirror image, and finally rebuilds (the mirror image of) K by reversing the reduction. We show that every diagram of a prime link admits such a sequence. We further prove that the cluster variables in x have the same F-polynomials as the representations T(i). This establishes the important fact that our representations T(i) do indeed correspond to cluster variables in A. But it even establishes the much stronger result that these cluster variables are all compatible, in the sense that they form a cluster. We also prove that the representations T(i) have the following symmetry property. For all vertices i,j of Q, the dimension of T(i) at j is equal to the dimension of T(j) at i.

Abstract:In previous work, we associated a module $T(i)$ to every segment $i$ of a link diagram $K$ and showed that there is a poset isomorphism between the submodules of $T(i)$ and the Kauffman states of $K$ relative to $i$. In this paper, we show that the posets are distributive lattices and give explicit descriptions of the join irreducibles in both posets. We also prove that the subposet of join irreducible Kauffman states is isomorphic to the poset of the coefficient quiver of $T(i)$.

Abstract:We show the existence of cluster $\mathcal{A}$-structures and cluster Poisson structures on any braid variety, for any simple Lie group. The construction is achieved via weave calculus and a tropicalization of Lusztig's coordinates. Several explicit seeds are provided and the quiver and cluster variables are readily computable. We prove that these upper cluster algebras equal their cluster algebras, show local acyclicity, and explicitly determine their DT-transformations as the twist automorphisms of braid varieties. The main result also resolves the conjecture of B. Leclerc on the existence of cluster algebra structures on the coordinate rings of open Richardson varieties.

Abstract:The first part of the article is a survey on the relation between cluster theory and Green's equivalences in semigroup theory. Precisely, we will discuss the isomorphism classes of sub-rooted cluster algebras of a rooted cluster algebra corresponding one-by-one to the regular D-classes of the semigroup consisting of partial seed endomorphisms of the initial seed. In the second part of the article, we will study a rooted cluster algebra from a Riemann surface, also we consider sub-rooted cluster algebras corresponding to the isomorphism classes of the so-called paunched surfaces. Finally, we state our observation for rooted cluster algebras from orbifolds and give a conjectural description for them analogous to those results from the surfaces.

Abstract:Significance The subject of cluster algebras was born out of the study of concrete mathematical questions such as “how can we detect when a matrix will have all eigenvalues positive?” Recently it has turned out that cluster algebras show up in all kinds of unexpected places, even in the physicists’ playground of quantum field theory. This paper is a review of one way in which quantum field theory and cluster algebras interact. In particular, the paper argues that geometric ideas coming from quantum field theory lead to a natural extension of the theory of cluster algebras.

Abstract:Let Q be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, let \Lambda be the associated preprojective algebra, let g be the associated Kac-Moody Lie algebra with Weyl group W, and let n be the positive part of g. For each Weyl group element w, a subcategory C_w of mod(\Lambda) was introduced by Buan, Iyama, Reiten and Scott. It is known that C_w is a Frobenius category and that its stable category is a Calabi-Yau category of dimension two. We show that C_w yields a cluster algebra structure on the coordinate ring \CC[N(w)] of the unipotent group N(w) := N \cap (w^{-1}N_-w). Here N is the pro-unipotent pro-group with Lie algebra the completion of n. One can identify \CC[N(w)] with a subalgebra of the graded dual of the universal enveloping algebra U(n) of n. Let S^* be the dual of Lusztig's semicanonical basis S of U(n). We show that all cluster monomials of \CC[N(w)] belong to S^*, and that S^* \cap \CC[N(w)] is a basis of \CC[N(w)]. Moreover, we show that the cluster algebra obtained from \CC[N(w)] by formally inverting the generators of the coefficient ring is isomorphic to the algebra \CC[N^w] of regular functions on the unipotent cell N^w := N \cap (B_-wB_-) of the Kac-Moody group G with Lie algebra g. We obtain a corresponding dual semicanonical basis of \CC[N^w]. As one application we obtain a basis for each acyclic cluster algebra, which contains all cluster monomials in a natural way.

Homological algebra of knots and BPS states

Abstract:It is known that knot homologies admit a physical description as spaces of open BPS states. We study operators and algebras acting on these spaces. This leads to a very rich story, which involves wall crossing phenomena, algebras of closed BPS states acting on spaces of open BPS states, and deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models. One important application to knot homologies is the existence of "colored differentials" that relate homological invariants of knots colored by different representations. Based on this structure, we formulate a list of properties of the colored HOMFLY homology that categorifies the colored HOMFLY polynomial. By calculating the colored HOMFLY homology for symmetric and anti-symmetric representations, we find a remarkable "mirror symmetry" between these triply-graded theories.

Abstract:Cluster algebras have recently become an important player in mathematics and physics. In this work, we investigate them through the lens of modern data science, specifically with techniques from network science and machine learning. Network analysis methods are applied to the exchange graphs for cluster algebras of varying mutation types. The analysis indicates that when the graphs are represented without identifying by permutation equivalence between clusters an elegant symmetry emerges in the quiver exchange graph embedding. The ratio between number of seeds and number of quivers associated to this symmetry is computed for finite Dynkin type algebras up to rank 5, and conjectured for higher ranks. Simple machine learning techniques successfully learn to classify cluster algebras using the data of seeds. The learning performance exceeds 0.9 accuracies between algebras of the same mutation type and between types, as well as relative to artificially generated data.

Bistellar Cluster Algebras and Piecewise Linear Invariants

Abstract:Inspired by the ideas and techniques used in the study of cluster algebras we construct a new class of algebras, called bistellar cluster algebras, from closed oriented triangulated even-dimensional manifolds by performing middle-dimensional bistellar moves. This class of algebras exhibit the algebraic behaviour of middle-dimensional bistellar moves but do not satisfy the classical cluster algebra axiom: "every cluster variable in every cluster is exchangeable". Thus the construction of bistellar cluster algebras is quite different from that of a classical cluster algebra. Secondly, using bistellar cluster algebras and the techniques of combinatorial topology, we construct a direct system associated with a set of PL homeomorphic PL manifolds of dimension 2 or 4, and show that the limit of this direct system is a PL invariant.

Abstract:We study the cluster algebras arising from cluster tubes with rank bigger than 1. Cluster tubes are 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated categories that contain no cluster tilting objects, but maximal rigid objects. Fix a certain maximal rigid object T in the cluster tube C-n of rank n. For any indecomposable rigid object M in C-n, we define an analogous X-M of Caldero-Chapoton's formula (or Palu's cluster character formula) by using the geometric information of M. We show that X-M, X-M' satisfy the mutation formula when M, M' form an exchange pair, and that X? : M (sic). X-M gives a bijection from the set of indecomposable rigid objects in C-n to the set of cluster variables of cluster algebra of type Cn-1, which induces a bijection between the set of basic maximal rigid objects in C-n and the set of clusters. This yields a surprising result proved recently by Buan-Marsh-Vatne that the combinatorics of maximal rigid objects in the cluster tube C-n encodes the combinatorics of the cluster algebra of type Bn-1, since the combinatorics of cluster algebras of type Bn-1 and of type Cn-1 is the same by a result of Fomin and Zelevinsky. As a consequence, we give a categorification of cluster algebras of type C.

Abstract:We construct knot invariants categorifying the quantum knot variants for all representations of quantum groups. We show that these invariants coincide with previous invariants defined by Khovanov for sl_2 and sl_3 and by Mazorchuk-Stroppel and Sussan for sl_n. Our technique is to study 2-representations of 2-quantum groups (in the sense of Rouquier and Khovanov-Lauda) categorifying tensor products of irreducible representations. These are the representation categories of certain finite dimensional algebras with an explicit diagrammatic presentation, generalizing the cyclotomic quotient of the KLR algebra. When the Lie algebra under consideration is $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, we show that these categories agree with certain subcategories of parabolic category O for gl_k. We also investigate the finer structure of these categories: they are standardly stratified and satisfy a double centralizer property with respect to their self-dual modules. The standard modules of the stratification play an important role as test objects for functors, as Vermas do in more classical representation theory. The existence of these representations has consequences for the structure of previously studied categorifications. It allows us to prove the non-degeneracy of Khovanov and Lauda's 2-category (that its Hom spaces have the expected dimension) in all symmetrizable types, and that the cyclotomic quiver Hecke algebras are symmetric Frobenius. In work of Reshetikhin and Turaev, the braiding and (co)evaluation maps between representations of quantum groups are used to define polynomial knot invariants. We show that the categorifications of tensor products are related by functors categorifying these maps, which allow the construction of bigraded knot homologies whose graded Euler characteristics are the original polynomial knot invariants.

Abstract:We consider the symplectic groupoid of pairs $(B,\mathbb{A})$ with $\mathbb A$ unipotent upper-triangular matrices and $B\in GL_n$ being such that $\widetilde {\mathbb A}=B{\mathbb A} B^{\text{T}}$ are also unipotent upper-triangular matrices. We explicitly solve this groupoid condition using Fock--Goncharov--Shen cluster variables and show that for $B$ satisfying the standard semiclassical Lie--Poisson algebra, the matrices $B$, $\mathbb A$, and $\widetilde{\mathbb A}$ satisfy the closed Poisson algebra relations expressible in the $r$-matrix form. Identifying entries of $\mathbb A$ and $\widetilde {\mathbb A}$ with geodesic functions for geodesics on the two halves of a closed Riemann surface of genus $g=n-1$ separated by the Markov element, we are able to construct the geodesic function $G_B$ ``dual'' to the Markov element. We thus obtain the complete cluster algebra description of Teichmüller space $\mathcal T_{2,0}$ of genus two. We discuss also the generalization of our construction for higher genera. For genus larger than three we need a Hamiltonian reduction based on the rank condition $\hbox{rank\,}({\mathbb A}+{\mathbb A}^{\text{T}})\le 4$; we present the example of such a reduction for $\mathcal T_{4,0}$.

Survey on recent invariants on classical knot theory

Abstract:The survey we are presenting is over 22 years old but it has still some ideas which where never published (except in Polish). This survey is the base of the third Chapter of my book: KNOTS: From combinatorics of knot diagrams to combinatorial topology based on knots, which is still in preparation (but compare <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org/pdf/math.GT/0512630">http://arxiv.org/pdf/math.GT/0512630</a>). The purpose of this survey is to present a new combinatorial method of constructing invariants of isotopy classes of tame links. The period of time between the spring of 1984 and the summer of 1985 was full of discoveries which revolutionized the knot theory and will have a deep impact on some other branches of mathematics. It started by the discovery of Jones of the new polynomial invariant of links (in May 1984), and the last big step (which will be described in this survey) has been made by Kauffman in August 1985 when Kauffman applied his method which allowed him to unify almost all previous work. This survey is far from being complete, even if we limit ourselves to the purely combinatorial methods and to the period May, 1984 -- September, 1985.

Centralisers and Hecke algebras in Representation Theory, with applications to Knots and Physics

Abstract:This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation à diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). The last chapter discusses algebraic results on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and their applications to the study of link invariants.

Abstract:We study relations between cluster algebra invariants and link invariants. First, we show that several constructions of positroid links (permutation links, Richardson links, grid diagram links, plabic graph links) give rise to isotopic links. For a subclass of permutations arising from concave curves, we also provide isotopies with the corresponding Coxeter links. Second, we associate a point count polynomial to an arbitrary locally acyclic quiver. We conjecture an equality between the top $a$-degree coefficient of the HOMFLY polynomial of a plabic graph link and the point count polynomial of its planar dual quiver. We prove this conjecture for leaf recurrent plabic graphs, which includes reduced plabic graphs and plabic fences as special cases.
