Abstract:The theory of screws clarifies many analogies between apparently unrelated notions in mechanics, including the duality between forces and angular velocities. It is known that the real 6-dimensional space of screws can be endowed with an operator E, E^2 = 0, that converts it into a rank 3 free module over the dual numbers. In this paper we prove the converse, namely, given a rank 3 free module over the dual numbers, endowed with orientation and a suitable scalar product (D-module geometry), we show that it is possible to define, in a canonical way, a Euclidean space so that each element of the module is represented by a screw vector field over it. The new approach has the effectiveness of motor calculus while being independent of any reduction point. It gives insights into the transference principle by showing that affine space geometry is basically vector space geometry over the dual numbers. The main results of screw theory are then recovered by using this point of view.

Abstract:We introduce a screw function corresponding to the Riemann zeta-function and study its properties from various aspects. Typical results are several equivalent conditions for the Riemann hypothesis in terms of the screw function. One of them can be considered an analog of so-called Weil's positivity or Li's criterion. In addition, we prove a few partial but unconditional results for such equivalents.

Abstract:This work introduces screw theory, a venerable but yet little known theory aimed at describing rigid body dynamics. This formulation of mechanics unifies in the concept of screw the translational and rotational degrees of freedom of the body. It captures a remarkable mathematical analogy between mechanical momenta and linear velocities, and between forces and angular velocities. For instance, it clarifies that angular velocities should be treated as applied vectors and that, under the composition of motions, they sum with the same rules of applied forces. This work provides a short and rigorous introduction to screw theory intended to an undergraduate and general readership.

Abstract:This paper is intended for students and researchers looking for more insight into Screw Theory. It shows how algebraic considerations lead to both physical and geometrical understanding of screws, and how they can connect affine geometry (what the world is) to linear algebra (what we can easily compute). Various formulations of the theory are first reviewed, as each of them highlights a particular aspect of screws. Their respective qualities and defects are also discussed. Subsequently, the powerful framework of Geometric Algebra (GA) is introduced to elucidate the nature of various physical objects commonly associated with screws, and eventually a new formalism based on GA is proposed, in which traditional screws clearly appear as a special case of more general affine objects. This approach generalizes the concept of a screw in a coordinate-free and origin-independent form. A simultaneous proof of Euler's First and Second Laws is provided to illustrate the use of this formalism.

Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:Curvature theory, a fundamental subject in kinematics, is typically addressed through the concepts of instantaneous invariants and canonical coordinates, which are pivotal for the generation of mechanical paths. This paper delves into this subject with a higher-order analysis of screws, employing both canonical and natural coordinates. Through this exploration, a new Euler–Savary equation is derived, one that does not rely on canonical coordinates. Additionally, the paper provides a comprehensive classification of the degenerate conditions of the cubic of stationary curves of four-bar linkages at rotational positions. A thorough examination of four-bar linkages in translational positions—the couple links translate instantaneously—is also presented, with analyses extending up to the sixth order. The findings reveal that the Burmester's points at translational positions can be extended to Burmester's points with excess one, provided that all pivot points are symmetrically distributed about the pole norm with the two cranks in corotating senses. However, the extension to Burmester's points with excess two is not possible. Similarly, the Ball's point with excess one does not progress to Ball's point with excess two. The paper also highlights that the traditional method, which is based on canonical coordinates, is ineffective when the four-bar linkage forms a parallelogram. Fortunately, this scenario can be effectively analyzed using the screw-based approach. Ultimately, the results presented can also serve as analytical solutions for 3-RR platforms with higher-order shakiness.

Abstract:This article investigates the principal screws and their pitches of screw systems from the viewpoint of line geometry. It starts from the fact that any n-independent screws pertaining to a specified n-screw system can be utilized to determine the system, and the pitch of a unit screw is the half of the reciprocal product with itself. The reciprocal product matrix of a screw matrix is therefore defined to determine the principal pitches and the directions of the principal screw axes of the system. With matrix diagonalization procedure, one can immediately obtain the principal pitches and the principal screws of a screw system. The whole procedure is straightforward and easily understood by an engineer with primary knowledge of linear algebra. Besides, the computational effort is greatly reduced and the efficiency is better compared with other methods. As a matter of fact, the pitch of any screw of a screw system can be represented by a homogeneous quadratic form of the linear combination coefficients. The homogeneous quadratic equation of the pitch of a screw system represents a conic curve in a two-system and an ellipsoid or a hyperboloid in a three-system. Therefore, this article also provides such visualizations of the principal axes in two- and three-dimensional spaces at last.

Abstract:We investigate the screw line corresponding to the screw function associated with the Riemann zeta-function under the Riemann hypothesis and derive three necessary and sufficient conditions for the Riemann hypothesis as applications. One of them explains the non-negativity of the Weil distribution by means of the norm.

Abstract:We introduce screw functions for Dirichlet series in the extended Selberg class. Then we prove that the Grand Riemann Hypothesis for a member of the extended Selberg class is equivalent to the nonpositivity of the corresponding screw function.

Abstract:Assembly errors have great influence on assembly quality in robotic assembly systems. Error analysis is directed to the propagations and accumula-tions of various errors and their effect on assembly success.Using the screw coordinates, assembly errors are represented as "error twist", the extremely compact expression. According to the law of screw composition, relative position and orientation errors of mating parts are computed and the necessary condition of assembly success is concluded. A new simple method for measuring assembly errors is also proposed based on the transformation law of a screw.Because of the compact representation of error, the model presented for error analysis can be applied to various part- mating types and especially useful for error analysis of complexity assembly.

Abstract:The theory of screws plays a fundamental role in the field of mechanisms and robotics. Based on the rank-one decomposition of positive semidefinite (PSD) matrices, this paper presents a new algorithm to identify the canonical basis of high-order screw systems. Using the proposed approach, a screw system can be decomposed into the direct sum of two subsystems, which are referred to as the general and special subsystems, respectively. By a particular choice of the general subsystem, the canonical basis of the original system can be obtained by the direct combination of the subsystems' principal elements. In the proposed decomposition, not only the canonical form of the screw system but also the corresponding distribution of all those possible base elements can be determined in a straightforward manner.

Abstract:The current paper proposes a unified analytical methodology to identify the principal screws of two- and three-screw systems. Based on the definition of the pitch of a screw, it first obtains an identical homogeneous quadric equation. According to functional analysis theory, it is known that the partial derivatives of an identical quadric equation with respect to its variables must be zero. Therefore, the paper deduces a set of linear homogeneous equations that are made up of the partial derivatives of the quadric equation. With the existing criteria of non-zero solutions for homogeneous linear algebra equations, it ultimately obtains the formulas of the principal pitches and the associated principal screws of the system. The most outstanding contribution of this methodology is that it proposes a unified analytical approach to identify the principal pitches and the principal coordinate systems of the second-order and the third-order screw systems. This should be a new contribution to the screw theory and will boost its applications to the kinematics analysis of robots and spatial mechanisms.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a concise but complete statics in screw form for engineering structures and mechanisms, especially for the structure under the action of a sophisticated spatial force system, which might be difficult to solve by the traditional ways. We established the balance equations of the screw statics in one coordinate frame. Compared with the traditional methods, the screw equation is straightforward in manipulation and convenient to obtain the wrench matrix for each force or torque. Six unknown variables can be solved by associating a set of screws on one rigid body. We can also select more isolated rigid bodies to establish the necessary equations when there are more unknowns. Furthermore, the new methodology of statics in this paper can form a more complete and more reasonable theoretical base for analyzing the complex truss structures and spatial mechanisms.

Abstract:We study the $M$-functions, which describe the limit theorem for the value-distributions of the secondary main terms in the asymptotic formulas for the summatory functions of the Goldbach counting function. One of the new aspects is a sufficient condition for the Riemann hypothesis provided by some formulas of the $M$-functions, which was a necessary condition in previous work. The other new aspect is the relation between the secondary main terms and the screw functions, which provides another necessary and sufficient condition for the Riemann hypothesis. We study such $M$-functions and screw functions in generalized settings by axiomatizing them.

Abstract:SUMMARYScrew theory has demonstrated its wide applications in robot kinematics and statics. We aim to propose an intuitive geometrical approach to obtain the reciprocal screws for a given screw system. Compared with the traditional Plücker coordinate method, the new approach is free from algebraic manipulation and can be used to obtain the reciprocal screws just by inspecting the structure of manipulator. The approach is based on three observations that describe the geometrical relation for zero pitch screw and infinite pitch screw. Based on the observations, the reciprocal screw systems of several common kinematic elements are analyzed, including usual kinematic pairs and chains. We also demonstrate usefulness of the geometrical approach by a variety of applications in mobility analysis, Jacobian formulation, and singularity analysis for parallel manipulator. This new approach can facilitate the parallel manipulator design process and provide sufficient insights for existing manipulators.

Abstract:We consider families of embedded, screw motion invariant minimal surfaces in $\R^3$ which limit to parking garage structures. We derive balance equations for the nodal limit and regenerate to obtain surfaces corresponding to solutions. We thus prove the existence of many new examples with helicoidal or planar ends.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel methodology based on screw theory to study the singularity of spatial hybrid mechanisms is presented. According to the physical meaning of inverse screws, we introduce the equivalent kinematic screws to replace the function of those of the parallel limbs, and therefore the hybrid branch can be transformed into a pure series kinematic chain which can facilitate the whole analytical process of the singularity of complex spatial hybrid mechanisms. In fact, this methodology can be widely used to solve the singularity problems of spatial hybrid mechanisms based on the analysis of their kinematic characters.
