Abstract:The Matroid Secretary Problem (MSP) is one of the most prominent settings for online resource allocation and optimal stopping. A decision-maker is presented with a ground set of elements $E$ revealed sequentially and in random order. Upon arrival, an irrevocable decision is made in a take-it-or-leave-it fashion, subject to a feasibility constraint on the set of selected elements captured by a matroid defined over $E$. The decision-maker only has ordinal access to compare the elements, and the goal is to design an algorithm that selects every element of the optimal basis with probability at least $\alpha$ (i.e., $\alpha$-probability-competitive). While the existence of a constant probability-competitive algorithm for MSP remains a major open question, simple greedy policies are at the core of state-of-the-art algorithms for several matroid classes. We introduce a flexible and general algorithmic framework to analyze greedy-like algorithms for MSP based on constructing a language associated with the matroid. Using this language, we establish a lower bound on the probability-competitiveness of the algorithm by studying a corresponding Poisson point process that governs the words' distribution in the language. Using our framework, we break the state-of-the-art guarantee for laminar matroids by settling the probability-competitiveness of the greedy-improving algorithm to be exactly $1-\ln(2) \approx 0.3068$. For graphic matroids, we show a probability-competitiveness of $0.2693$ when the underlying graph has no parallel edges and a guarantee of $0.2504$ for general graphs, also breaking the state-of-the-art factor of $0.25$.

Abstract:In a matroid secretary problem, one is presented with a sequence of objects of various weights in a random order, and must choose irrevocably to accept or reject each item. There is a further constraint that the set of items selected must form an independent set of an associated matroid. Constant-competitive algorithms (algorithms whose expected solution weight is within a constant factor of the optimal) are known for many types of matroid secretary problems. We examine the laminar matroid and show an algorithm achieving provably 0.053 competitive ratio.

Abstract:Whereas there are simple algorithms that are proven to be optimal for the Classical and the Multiple Choice Secretary Problem, the Matroid Secretary Problem is less thoroughly understood. This paper proposes the generalization of some simple algorithms from the Classical and Multiple Choice versions on the Matroid Secretary Problem. Out of two algorithms that make decisions based on samples, like the Dynkin's algorithm, one is proven to be an instance of Greedy Algorithm (Bahrani et al., 2022), while the other is not. A generalized version of the Virtual Algorithm (Babaioff et al., 2018) obtains a constant competitive ratio for the Hat Graph, the adversarial example for Greedy Algorithms, but fails to do so when a slight modificiation is introduced to the graph. We show that there is no algorithm with Strong Forbidden Sets (Soto et al., 2021) of size 1 on all graphic matroids.

Abstract:We define a generalization of the classical secretary problem called the matroid secretary problem . In this problem, the elements of a matroid are presented to an online algorithm in uniformly random order. When an element arrives, the algorithm observes its value and must make an irrevocable decision whether or not to accept it. The accepted elements must form an independent set, and the objective is to maximize the combined value of these elements. We present an O (log k )-competitive algorithm for general matroids (where k is the rank of the matroid), and constant-competitive algorithms for several special cases including graphic matroids, truncated partition matroids, and bounded degree transversal matroids. We leave as an open question the existence of constant-competitive algorithms for general matroids. Our results have applications in welfare-maximizing online mechanism design for domains in which the sets of simultaneously satisfiable agents form a matroid.

Abstract:Babaioff et al. [BIK2007] introduced the matroid secretary problem in 2007, a natural extension of the classic single-choice secretary problem to matroids, and conjectured that a constant-competitive online algorithm exists. The conjecture still remains open despite substantial partial progress, including constant-competitive algorithms for numerous special cases of matroids, and an $O(\log \log \text{rank})$-competitive algorithm in the general case. Many of these algorithms follow principled frameworks. The limits of these frameworks are previously unstudied, and prior work establishes only that a handful of particular algorithms cannot resolve the matroid secretary conjecture. We initiate the study of impossibility results for frameworks to resolve this conjecture. We establish impossibility results for a natural class of greedy algorithms and for randomized partition algorithms, both of which contain known algorithms that resolve special cases.

Abstract:Only recently progress has been made in obtaining $o(\log(\mathrm{rank}))$-competitive algorithms for the matroid secretary problem. More precisely, Chakraborty and Lachish (2012) presented a $O(\sqrt{\log(\mathrm{rank})})$-competitive procedure, and Lachish (2014) later presented a $O(\log\log(\mathrm{rank}))$-competitive algorithm. Both these algorithms and their analyses are very involved, which is also reflected in the extremely high constants in their competitive ratios. Using different tools, we present a considerably simpler $O(\log\log(\mathrm{rank}))$-competitive algorithm for the matroid secretary problem. Our algorithm can be interpreted as a distribution over a simple type of matroid secretary algorithms which are easy to analyze. Due to the simplicity of our procedure, we are also able to vastly improve on the hidden constant in the competitive ratio.

Abstract:We prove that for every proper minor-closed class $M$ of matroids representable over a prime field, there exists a constant-competitive matroid secretary algorithm for the matroids in $M$. This result relies on the extremely powerful matroid minor structure theory being developed by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. We also note that for asymptotically almost all matroids, the matroid secretary algorithm that selects a random basis, ignoring weights, is $(2+o(1))$-competitive. In fact, assuming the conjecture that almost all matroids are paving, there is a $(1+o(1))$-competitive algorithm for almost all matroids.

Abstract:We show that the matroid secretary problem is equivalent to correlated contention resolution in the online random-order model. Specifically, the matroid secretary conjecture is true if and only if every matroid admits an online random-order contention resolution scheme which, given an arbitrary (possibly correlated) prior distribution over subsets of the ground set, matches the balance ratio of the best offline scheme for that distribution up to a constant. We refer to such a scheme as universal. Our result indicates that the core challenge of the matroid secretary problem lies in resolving contention for positively correlated inputs, in particular when the positive correlation is benign in as much as offline contention resolution is concerned. Our result builds on our previous work which establishes one direction of this equivalence, namely that the secretary conjecture implies universal random-order contention resolution, as well as a weak converse, which derives a matroid secretary algorithm from a random-order contention resolution scheme with only partial knowledge of the distribution. It is this weak converse that we strengthen in this paper: We show that universal random-order contention resolution for matroids, in the usual setting of a fully known prior distribution, suffices to resolve the matroid secretary conjecture in the affirmative. Our proof is the composition of three reductions. First, we use duality arguments to reduce the matroid secretary problem to the matroid prophet secretary problem with arbitrarily correlated distributions. Second, we introduce a generalization of contention resolution we term labeled contention resolution, to which we reduce the correlated matroid prophet secretary problem. Finally, we combine duplication of elements with limiting arguments to reduce labeled contention resolution to classical contention resolution.
Improved Submodular Secretary Problem with Shortlists

Abstract:First, for the for the submodular $k$-secretary problem with shortlists [1], we provide a near optimal $1-1/e-\epsilon$ approximation using shortlist of size $O(k poly(1/\epsilon))$. In particular, we improve the size of shortlist used in \cite{us} from $O(k 2^{poly(1/\epsilon)})$ to $O(k poly(1/\epsilon))$. As a result, we provide a near optimal approximation algorithm for random-order streaming of monotone submodular functions under cardinality constraints, using memory $O(k poly(1/\epsilon))$. It exponentially improves the running time and memory of \cite{us} in terms of $1/\epsilon$. Next we generalize the problem to matroid constraints, which we refer to as submodular matroid secretary problem with shortlists. It is a variant of the \textit{matroid secretary problem} \cite{feldman2014simple}, in which the algorithm is allowed to have a shortlist. We design an algorithm that achieves a $\frac{1}{2}(1-1/e^2 -\epsilon)$ competitive ratio for any constant $\epsilon>0$, using a shortlist of size $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$. Moreover, we generalize our results to the case of $p$-matchoid constraints and give a $\frac{1}{p+1}(1-1/e^{p+1}-\epsilon )$ approximation using shortlist of size $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$. It asymptotically approaches the best known offline guarantee $\frac{1}{p+1}$ [22]. Furthermore, we show that our algorithms can be implemented in the streaming setting using $O(k poly(\frac{1}{\epsilon}))$ memory.

Abstract:In the online random-arrival model, an algorithm receives a sequence of n requests that arrive in a random order. The algorithm is expected to make an irrevocable decision with regard to each request based only on the observed history. We consider the following natural extension of this model: each request arrives k times, and the arrival order is a random permutation of the kn arrivals; the algorithm is expected to make a decision regarding each request only upon its last arrival. We focus primarily on the case when k=2, which can also be interpreted as each request arriving at, and departing from the system, at a random time. We examine the secretary problem: the problem of selecting the best secretary when the secretaries are presented online according to a random permutation. We show that when each secretary arrives twice, we can achieve a competitive ratio of ~0.768 (compared to 1/e in the classical secretary problem), and that it is optimal. We also show that without any knowledge about the number of secretaries or their arrival times, we can still hire the best secretary with probability at least 2/3, in contrast to the impossibility of achieving a constant success probability in the classical setting. We extend our results to the matroid secretary problem, introduced by Babaioff et al., (2007) and show a simple algorithm that achieves a 2-approximation to the maximal weighted basis in the new model (for k=2). We show that this approximation factor can be improved in special cases of the matroid secretary problem; in particular, we give a 16/9-competitive algorithm for the returning edge-weighted bipartite matching problem.

Abstract:We study generalizations of the "Prophet Inequality" and "Secretary Problem", where the algorithm is restricted to an arbitrary downward-closed set system. For {0,1}-values, we give O(log n)-competitive algorithms for both problems. This is close to the \Omega(log n / loglog n) lower bound due to Babaioff, Immorlica, and Kleinberg. For general values, our results translate to O(log n log r)-competitive algorithms, where r is the cardinality of the largest feasible set. This resolves (up to the O(log r loglog n) factors) an open question posed to us by Bobby Kleinberg.

The secretary problem became one of the most prominent online selection problems due to its numerous applications in online mechanism design. The task is to select a maximum weight subset of elements subject to given constraints, where elements arrive one-by-one in random order, revealing a weight upon arrival. The decision whether to select an element has to be taken immediately after its arrival. The different applications that map to the secretary problem ask for different constraint families to be handled. The most prominent ones are matroid constraints, which both capture many relevant settings and admit strongly competitive secretary algorithms. However, dealing with more involved constraints proved to be much more difficult, and strong algorithms are known only for a few specific settings. In this paper, we present a general framework for dealing with the secretary problem over the intersection of several matroids. This framework allows us to combine and exploit the large set of matroid secretary algorithms known in the literature. As one consequence, we get constant-competitive secretary algorithms over the intersection of any constant number of matroids whose corresponding (single-)matroid secretary problems are currently known to have a constant-competitive algorithm. Moreover, we show that our results extend to submodular objectives.

Faster Submodular Maximization for Several Classes of Matroids

Abstract:The maximization of submodular functions have found widespread application in areas such as machine learning, combinatorial optimization, and economics, where practitioners often wish to enforce various constraints; the matroid constraint has been investigated extensively due to its algorithmic properties and expressive power. Recent progress has focused on fast algorithms for important classes of matroids given in explicit form. Currently, nearly-linear time algorithms only exist for graphic and partition matroids [ICALP '19]. In this work, we develop algorithms for monotone submodular maximization constrained by graphic, transversal matroids, or laminar matroids in time near-linear in the size of their representation. Our algorithms achieve an optimal approximation of $1-1/e-\epsilon$ and both generalize and accelerate the results of Ene and Nguyen [ICALP '19]. In fact, the running time of our algorithm cannot be improved within the fast continuous greedy framework of Badanidiyuru and Vondrák [SODA '14]. To achieve near-linear running time, we make use of dynamic data structures that maintain bases with approximate maximum cardinality and weight under certain element updates. These data structures need to support a weight decrease operation and a novel FREEZE operation that allows the algorithm to freeze elements (i.e. force to be contained) in its basis regardless of future data structure operations. For the laminar matroid, we present a new dynamic data structure using the top tree interface of Alstrup, Holm, de Lichtenberg, and Thorup [TALG '05] that maintains the maximum weight basis under insertions and deletions of elements in $O(\log n)$ time. For the transversal matroid the FREEZE operation corresponds to requiring the data structure to keep a certain set $S$ of vertices matched, a property that we call $S$-stability.

Constrained Non-Monotone Submodular Maximization: Offline and Secretary Algorithms

Abstract:Constrained submodular maximization problems have long been studied, with near-optimal results known under a variety of constraints when the submodular function is monotone. The case of non-monotone submodular maximization is less understood: the first approximation algorithms even for the unconstrainted setting were given by Feige et al. (FOCS '07). More recently, Lee et al. (STOC '09, APPROX '09) show how to approximately maximize non-monotone submodular functions when the constraints are given by the intersection of p matroid constraints; their algorithm is based on local-search procedures that consider p-swaps, and hence the running time may be n^Omega(p), implying their algorithm is polynomial-time only for constantly many matroids. In this paper, we give algorithms that work for p-independence systems (which generalize constraints given by the intersection of p matroids), where the running time is poly(n,p). Our algorithm essentially reduces the non-monotone maximization problem to multiple runs of the greedy algorithm previously used in the monotone case. Our idea of using existing algorithms for monotone functions to solve the non-monotone case also works for maximizing a submodular function with respect to a knapsack constraint: we get a simple greedy-based constant-factor approximation for this problem. With these simpler algorithms, we are able to adapt our approach to constrained non-monotone submodular maximization to the (online) secretary setting, where elements arrive one at a time in random order, and the algorithm must make irrevocable decisions about whether or not to select each element as it arrives. We give constant approximations in this secretary setting when the algorithm is constrained subject to a uniform matroid or a partition matroid, and give an O(log k) approximation when it is constrained by a general matroid of rank k.

Abstract:The secretary problem is a classic model for online decision making. Recently, combinatorial extensions such as matroid or matching secretary problems have become an important tool to study algorithmic problems in dynamic markets. Here the decision maker must know the numerical value of each arriving element, which can be a demanding informational assumption. In this paper, we initiate the study of combinatorial secretary problems with ordinal information, in which the decision maker only needs to be aware of a preference order consistent with the values of arrived elements. The goal is to design online algorithms with small competitive ratios. For a variety of combinatorial problems, such as bipartite matching, general packing LPs, and independent set with bounded local independence number, we design new algorithms that obtain constant competitive ratios. For the matroid secretary problem, we observe that many existing algorithms for special matroid structures maintain their competitive ratios even in the ordinal model. In these cases, the restriction to ordinal information does not represent any additional obstacle. Moreover, we show that ordinal variants of the submodular matroid secretary problems can be solved using algorithms for the linear versions by extending [Feldman and Zenklusen, 2015]. In contrast, we provide a lower bound of $\Omega(\sqrt{n}/(\log n))$ for algorithms that are oblivious to the matroid structure, where $n$ is the total number of elements. This contrasts an upper bound of $O(\log n)$ in the cardinal model, and it shows that the technique of thresholding is not sufficient for good algorithms in the ordinal model.
Robust Algorithms for the Secretary Problem

Abstract:In classical secretary problems, a sequence of $n$ elements arrive in a uniformly random order, and we want to choose a single item, or a set of size $K$. The random order model allows us to escape from the strong lower bounds for the adversarial order setting, and excellent algorithms are known in this setting. However, one worrying aspect of these results is that the algorithms overfit to the model: they are not very robust. Indeed, if a few "outlier" arrivals are adversarially placed in the arrival sequence, the algorithms perform poorly. E.g., Dynkin's popular $1/e$-secretary algorithm fails with even a single adversarial arrival. We investigate a robust version of the secretary problem. In the Byzantine Secretary model, we have two kinds of elements: green (good) and red (rogue). The values of all elements are chosen by the adversary. The green elements arrive at times uniformly randomly drawn from $[0,1]$. The red elements, however, arrive at adversarially chosen times. Naturally, the algorithm does not see these colors: how well can it solve secretary problems? We give algorithms which get value comparable to the value of the optimal green set minus the largest green item. Specifically, we give an algorithm to pick $K$ elements that gets within $(1-\varepsilon)$ factor of the above benchmark, as long as $K \geq \mathrm{poly}(\varepsilon^{-1} \log n)$. We extend this to the knapsack secretary problem, for large knapsack size $K$. For the single-item case, an analogous benchmark is the value of the second-largest green item. For value-maximization, we give a $\mathrm{poly} \log^* n$-competitive algorithm, using a multi-layered bucketing scheme that adaptively refines our estimates of second-max over time. For probability-maximization, we show the existence of a good randomized algorithm, using the minimax principle.

Abstract:The classical problem of maximizing a submodular function under a matroid constraint is considered. Defining a new measure for the increments made by the greedy algorithm at each step, called the discriminant, improved approximation ratio guarantees are derived for the greedy algorithm. At each step, discriminant measures the multiplicative gap in the incremental valuation between the item chosen by the greedy algorithm and the largest potential incremental valuation for eligible items not selected by it. The new guarantee subsumes all the previous known results for the greedy algorithm, including the curvature based ones, and the derived guarantees are shown to be tight via constructing specific instances. More refined approximation guarantee is derived for a special case called the submodular welfare maximization/partition problem that is also tight, for both the offline and the online case.

Abstract:We study matroid prophet inequalities when distributions are unknown and accessible only through samples. While single-sample prophet inequalities for special matroids are known, no constant-factor competitive algorithm with even a sublinear number of samples was known for general matroids. Adding more to the stake, the single-sample version of the question for general matroids has close (two-way) connections with the long-standing matroid secretary conjecture. In this work, we give a $(\frac14 - \varepsilon)$-competitive matroid prophet inequality with only $O_\varepsilon(\mathrm{poly} \log n)$ samples. Our algorithm consists of two parts: (i) a novel quantile-based reduction from matroid prophet inequalities to online contention resolution schemes (OCRSs) with $O_\varepsilon(\log n)$ samples, and (ii) a $(\frac14 - \varepsilon)$-selectable matroid OCRS with $O_\varepsilon(\mathrm{poly} \log n)$ samples which carefully addresses an adaptivity challenge.

Parallelizing greedy for submodular set function maximization in matroids and beyond

Abstract:We consider parallel, or low adaptivity, algorithms for submodular function maximization. This line of work was recently initiated by Balkanski and Singer and has already led to several interesting results on the cardinality constraint and explicit packing constraints. An important open problem is the classical setting of matroid constraint, which has been instrumental for developments in submodular function maximization. In this paper we develop a general strategy to parallelize the well-studied greedy algorithm and use it to obtain a randomized (1 / 2 − є)-approximation in O( log2(n) / 2 ) rounds of adaptivity. We rely on this algorithm, and an elegant amplification approach due to Badanidiyuru and Vondrák to obtain a fractional solution that yields a near-optimal randomized ( 1 − 1/e − є )-approximation in O( log2(n) / є3 ) rounds of adaptivity. For non-negative functions we obtain a ( 3−2√2 − є )-approximation and a fractional solution that yields a ( 1 / e − є)-approximation. Our approach for parallelizing greedy yields approximations for intersections of matroids and matchoids, and the approximation ratios are comparable to those known for sequential greedy.

At the arrival of each candidate, a decision maker must irrevocably decide whether to hire him.
