Abstract:This is the first in a series of papers devoted to foundations of topological stacks. We begin developing a homotopy theory for topological stacks along the lines of classical homotopy theory of topological spaces. In this paper we go as far as introducing the homotopy groups and establishing their basic properties. We also develop a Galois theory of covering spaces for a (locally connected semilocally 1-connected) topological stack. Built into the Galois theory is a method for determining the stacky structure (i.e., inertia groups) of covering stacks. As a consequence, we get for free a characterization of topological stacks that are quotients of topological spaces by discrete group actions. For example, this give a handy characterization of good orbifolds. Orbifolds, graphs of groups, and complexes of groups are examples of topological (Deligne-Mumford) stacks. We also show that any algebraic stack (of finite type over $\mathbb{C}$) gives rise to a topological stack. We also prove a Riemann Existence Theorem for stacks. In particular, the algebraic fundamental group of an algebraic stack over $\mathbb{C}$ is isomorphic to the profinite completion of the fundamental group of its underlying topological stack. The next paper in the series concerns function stacks (in particular loop stacks) and fibrations of topological stacks. This is the first in a series of papers devoted to foundations of topological stacks.

Abstract:This article is concerned with three different homotopy theories of stratified spaces: The one defined by Douteau and Henriques, the one defined by Haine, and the one defined by Nand-Lal. One of the central questions concerning these theories has been how precisely they connect with geometric and topological examples of stratified spaces, such as piecewise linear pseudomanifolds, Whitney stratified spaces, or more recently Ayala, Francis and Tanaka's conically smooth stratified spaces. More precisely, so far, it has been an open question whether there exist (semi)model structures on stratified topological spaces that present these theories, in which such relevant examples of stratified spaces are bifibrant. Here, we prove an affirmative answer to this question. As a consequence, we obtain a model categorical interpretation of a stratified homotopy hypothesis. Specifically, we show that Lurie's stratified singular simplicial set functor induces a Quillen equivalence between the semimodel category of stratified topological spaces presenting Nand-Lal's homotopy theory of stratified spaces and the left Bousfield localization of the Joyal model structure that corresponds to such $\infty$-categories in which every endomorphism is an isomorphism. We then perform a detailed investigation of bifibrant objects in these model structures of stratified spaces, proving a series of detection criteria and illuminating the relationship to Quinn's homotopically stratified spaces.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to build a theory of Stokes structures in an abstract infinity categorical context and to show that Stokes structures coming from flat bundles form a locally geometric derived stack of finite presentation. This generalizes existing geometricity results on Stokes structures in four different directions : our result applies in any dimension, infinity categorical coefficients are allowed, derived structures on moduli spaces are considered and more general spaces than those arising from flat bundles are permitted.

Homotopy types of topological stacks of categories

Abstract:This note extends Quillen's Theorem A to a large class of categories internal to topological spaces. This allows us to show that under a mild condition a fully faithful and essentially surjective functor between such topological categories induces a homotopy equivalence of classifying spaces. It follows from this that we can associate a 2-functorial homotopy type to a wide class of topological stacks of categories, taking values in the 2-category of spaces, continuous maps and homotopy classes of homotopies of maps. This generalises work of Noohi and Ebert on the homotopy types of topological stacks of groupoids under the restriction to the site with numerable open covers.

Moduli stack of stable curves from a stratified homotopy viewpoint

Abstract:In 1984, Charney and Lee defined a category of stable curves and exhibited a rational homology equivalence from its geometric realisation to (the analytification of) the moduli stack of stable curves, also known as the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification. We strengthen this result by showing that, in fact, this category captures the stratified homotopy type of the moduli stack. In particular, it classifies constructible sheaves via an exodromy equivalence.

Combinatorial models for stratified homotopy theory

Abstract:This paper is part of a series of three articles with the objective of investigating a stratified version of the homotopy hypothesis in terms of semimodel structures that interact well with classical examples of stratified spaces, such as Whitney stratified spaces. To this end, we prove the existence of several combinatorial simplicial model structures in the combinatorial setting of stratified simplicial sets. One of these we show to be Quillen equivalent to the left Bousfield localization of the Joyal model structure that presents the $(\infty,1)$-category of layered $(\infty,1)$-categories, i.e., such $(\infty,1)$-categories in which every endomorphism is an isomorphism.

Abstract:In this article we consider the homotopy theory of stratified spaces from a simplicial point of view. We first consider a model category of filtered simplicial sets over some fixed poset PP, and show that it is a simplicial combinatorial model category. We then define a generalization of the homotopy groups for any fibrant filtered simplicial set XX : the filtered homotopy groups sπn(X)s\pi _n(X). They are diagrams of groups built from the homotopy groups of the different pieces of XX. We then show that the weak equivalences are exactly the morphisms that induce isomorphisms on those filtered homotopy groups. Then, using filtered versions of the topological realisation of a simplicial set and of the simplicial set of singular simplices, we transfer those results to a category whose objects are topological spaces stratified over PP. In particular, we get a stratified version of Whitehead’s theorem. Specializing to the case of conically stratified spaces, a wide class of topological stratified spaces, we recover a theorem of Miller saying that to understand the homotopy type of conically stratified spaces, one only has to understand the homotopy type of strata and holinks. We then provide a family of examples of conically stratified spaces and of computations of their filtered homotopy groups.

Abstract:We show that the $\infty$-category of global spaces is equivalent to the homotopy localization of the $\infty$-category of sheaves on the site of separated differentiable stacks, following a philosophy proposed by Gepner-Henriques. We further prove that this $\infty$-category of sheaves is a cohesive $\infty$-topos and that it fully faithfully contains the singular-cohesive $\infty$-topos of Sati-Schreiber.

Abstract:For a variety over certain topological rings $R$, like $\mathbb{Z}_p$ or $\mathbb{C}$, there is a well-studied way to topologize the $R$-points on the variety. In this paper, we generalize this definition to algebraic stacks. For an algebraic stack $\mathfrak{X}$ over many topological rings $R$, we define a topology on the isomorphism classes of $R$-points of $\mathfrak{X}$. We prove expected properties of the resulting topological spaces including functoriality. Then, we extend the definition to the case when $R$ is the ring of adeles of some global field. Finally, we use this last definition to strengthen the local-global compatibility for stacky curves of Bhargava--Poonen to a strong approximation result.

Abstract:Implementing an idea due to John Baez and James Dolan we define new invariants of Whitney stratified manifolds by considering the homotopy theory of smooth transversal maps. To each Whitney stratified manifold we assign transversal homotopy monoids, one for each natural number. The assignment is functorial for a natural class of maps which we call stratified normal submersions. When the stratification is trivial the transversal homotopy monoids are isomorphic to the usual homotopy groups. We compute some simple examples and explore the elementary properties of these invariants. We also assign `higher invariants', the transversal homotopy categories, to each Whitney stratified manifold. These have a rich structure; they are rigid monoidal categories for n>1 and ribbon categories for n>2. As an example we show that the transversal homotopy categories of a sphere, stratified by a point and its complement, are equivalent to categories of framed tangles.
From Samples to Persistent Stratified Homotopy Types

Abstract:The natural occurrence of singular spaces in applications has led to recent investigations on performing topological data analysis (TDA) in a stratified framework. In many applications, there is no a priori information on what points should be regarded as singular or regular. For this purpose we describe a fully implementable process that provably approximates the stratification for a large class of two-strata Whitney stratified spaces from sufficiently close non-stratified samples. Additionally, in this work, we establish a notion of persistent stratified homotopy type obtained from a sample with two strata. In analogy to the non-stratified applications in TDA which rely on a series of convenient properties of (persistent) homotopy types of sufficiently regular spaces, we show that our persistent stratified homotopy type behaves much like its non-stratified counterpart and exhibits many properties (such as stability, and inference results) necessary for an application in TDA. In total, our results combine to a sampling theorem guaranteeing the (approximate) inference of (persistent) stratified homotopy types of sufficiently regular two-strata Whitney stratified spaces.

Abstract:Many important theorems in differential topology relate properties of manifolds to properties of their underlying homotopy types -- defined e.g. using the total singular complex or the Čech nerve of a good open cover. Upon embedding the category of manifolds into the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ of differentiable sheaves one gains a further notion of underlying homotopy type: the shape of the corresponding differentiable sheaf. In a first series of results we prove using simple cofinality and descent arguments that the shape of any manifold coincides with many other notions of underlying homotopy types such as the ones mentioned above. Our techniques moreover allow for computations, such as the homotopy type of the Haefliger stack, following Carchedi. This leads to more refined questions, such as what it means for a mapping differential sheaf to have the correct shape. To answer these we construct model structures as well as more general homotopical calculi on the $\infty$-category $\mathbf{Diff}^\infty$ (which restrict to its full subcategory of $0$-truncated objects,$\mathbf{Diff}^\infty_{\leq 0}$) with shape equivalences as the weak equivalences. These tools are moreover developed in such a way so as to be highly customisable, with a view towards future applications, e.g. in geometric topology. Finally, working with the $\infty$-topos $\mathbf{Diff}^0$ of sheaves on topological manifolds, we give new and conceptual proofs of some classical statements in algebraic topology. These include Dugger and Isaksen's hypercovering theorem, and the fact that the Quillen adjunction between simplicial sets and topological spaces is a Quillen equivalence.

Generalized cohomology theories for algebraic stacks

Abstract:We extend the stable motivic homotopy category of Voevodsky to the class of scalloped algebraic stacks, and show that it admits the formalism of Grothendieck's six operations. Objects in this category represent generalized cohomology theories for stacks like algebraic K-theory, as well as new examples like genuine motivic cohomology and algebraic cobordism. These cohomology theories admit Gysin maps and satisfy homotopy invariance, localization, and Mayer-Vietoris. For example, we deduce that homotopy K-theory satisfies cdh descent on scalloped stacks. We also prove a fixed point localization formula for torus actions. Finally, the construction is contrasted with a "lisse-extended" stable motivic homotopy category, defined for arbitrary stacks: we show for example that lisse-extended motivic cohomology of quotient stacks is computed by the equivariant higher Chow groups of Edidin-Graham, and we also get a good new theory of Borel-equivariant algebraic cobordism. Moreover, the lisse-extended motivic homotopy type is shown to recover all previous constructions of motives of stacks.

Abstract:Recent results in geometric invariant theory (GIT) for non-reductive linear algebraic group actions allow us to stratify quotient stacks of the form [X/H], where X is a projective scheme and H is a linear algebraic group with internally graded unipotent radical acting linearly on X, in such a way that each stratum [S/H] has a geometric quotient S/H. This leads to stratifications of moduli stacks (for example, sheaves over a projective scheme) such that each stratum has a coarse moduli space.

Stratified Toposes

Abstract:We introduce stratified toposes, which are toposes that are stratified by a suitable hierarchy of universes. The term `stratified topos' recalls the notion of stratified pseudotopos of Moerdijk and Palmgren (2002). However, the details of our proposal are closer to that of Streicher (2005), with the foundational contribution being a strengthening of Streicher's axioms. As such, stratified toposes model the calculus of constructions. Key results about toposes can be refined to yield results about stratified toposes. As proof of concept, we construct what we call the stratified topos of coalgebras for a stratified Cartesian comonad on a stratified topos. This construction refines that of the topos of coalgebras for a Cartesian comonad on a topos. Coalgebra constructions in related settings were given by Warren (2007) and Zwanziger (2023). This coalgebra construction exposes conditions under which generic monomorphisms and dense subcategories can be lifted to coalgebras, which are extracted in the appendix.

Abstract:This article constructs the moduli stack of torsionfree $G$-jet-structures in homotopy type theory with one monadic modality. This yields a construction of this moduli stack for any $\infty$-topos equipped with any stable factorization systems. In the intended applications of this theory, the factorization systems are given by the deRham-Stack construction. Homotopy type theory allows a formulation of this abstract theory with surprising low complexity. This is witnessed by the accompanying formalization of large parts of this work.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of stratification for big tensor-triangulated categories relative to the homological spectrum and develop the fundamental features of this theory. In particular, we demonstrate that it exhibits excellent descent properties. In conjunction with Balmer's Nerves of Steel conjecture, we conclude that stratification admits a general form of descent. This gives a uniform treatment of several recent stratification results and provides a complete answer to the question: When does stratification descend? As a new application, we extend earlier work on the tensor triangular geometry of equivariant module spectra from finite groups to compact Lie groups.

A guide to moduli theory beyond GIT

Abstract:In this survey we provide an overview of some recent developments in the construction of moduli spaces using stack-theoretic techniques. We will also explain the analogue of Harder-Narasimhan stratifications for general stacks, known as $\Theta$-stratifications. As an application of the ideas exposed here, we address the moduli problem of principal bundles over higher dimensional projective varieties, as well as its different compactifications by the so-called principal $\rho$-sheaves. We construct a stratification by instability types whose lower strata admits a proper good moduli space of ``Gieseker semistable" objects and a new Gieseker-type Harder-Narasimhan filtration for these objects. Detailed proofs of the latter results will appear elsewhere.

Abstract:Intersection homology of Goresky and MacPherson can be defined from the Deligne sheaf, obtained from truncations of complexes of sheaves. As intersection homology is not the homology of a particular space, the search for a family of spaces whose homologies have properties analogous to intersection homology has developed. For some stratified spaces, M. Banagl has introduced such a family by using a topological truncation: the original link is replaced by a truncation of its homological Moore resolution. In this work, we study the dual approach in the Eckmann-Hilton sense: we consider the stratified space obtained by replacing the original link by a Postnikov approximation. The main result is that our construction restores the space constructed by Gajer to establish an intersection Dold-Thom theorem. We are conducting this study within the general framework of Quinn's homotopically stratified spaces.

On the homotopy links of stratified cell complexes

Abstract:Homotopy links haven proven to be one of the most powerful tools of stratified homotopy theory. In previous work, we described combinatorial models for the generalized homotopy links of a stratified simplicial set. For many purposes, in particular to investigate the stratified homotopy hypothesis, a more general version of this result pertaining to stratified cell complexes is needed. Here we prove that, given a stratified cell complex $X$, the generalized homotopy links can be computed in terms of a certain subcomplex of a subdivision of $X$. As a consequence, it follows that homotopy links map certain pushout diagrams of stratified cell complexes into homotopy pushout diagrams. This result is crucial to the development of (semi)model structures for stratified homotopy theory in which geometric examples of stratified spaces, such as Whitney stratified spaces, are bifibrant.
