Abstract:Pair-density-wave (PDW) is a long-sought exotic state with oscillating superconducting order without external magnetic field. So far it has been rare in establishing a 2D microscopic model with PDW long-range order in its ground state. Here we propose to study PDW superconductivity in a minimal model of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interaction $V_1$ and $V_2$, respectively. By performing a state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of this $t$-$V_1$-$V_2$ model at finite doping on six-leg and eight-leg honeycomb cylinders, we showed that the ground state exhibits PDW ordering (namely quasi-long-range order with a divergent PDW susceptibility). Remarkably this PDW state persists on the wider cylinder with 2D-like Fermi surfaces (FS). To the best of our knowledge, this is probably the first controlled numerical evidence of PDW in systems with 2D-like FS.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the possibility of realizing the paired - density - wave (PDW) superconducting state in a spin - less fermion model on a two - dimensional honeycomb lattice by introducing nearest - neighbor (NN) and next - nearest - neighbor (NNN) interactions \(V_1\) and \(V_2\). Specifically, the researchers studied this model on six - leg and eight - leg honeycomb cylinders using the density - matrix renormalization - group (DMRG) method to explore whether there are PDW states with quasi - long - range order in these systems. This is to verify whether the existence of PDW states can be observed in systems with a two - dimensional Fermi - surface - like structure in the absence of an external magnetic field. This research is of great significance for understanding the mechanisms of unconventional superconductivity, especially the superconducting phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems. The key issues in the paper are: 1. **Existence of PDW states**: The researchers hope to confirm through theoretical models and numerical simulations that PDW states can indeed emerge in the two - dimensional honeycomb - lattice model under specific conditions (such as appropriate interaction strengths and doping levels). 2. **Properties of PDW states**: Besides confirming the existence of PDW states, the research also focuses on the specific properties of this state, such as its pairing momentum, spatial oscillation behavior, and the differences from the traditional BCS superconducting state. 3. **Applicable range of the model**: The research also explores the stability of PDW states under different parameters (such as different \(V_2/V_1\) ratios and doping concentrations) to understand the performance of this state under more extensive conditions. Through these studies, the authors hope to provide a new perspective for understanding the superconducting mechanisms in complex quantum materials and may provide theoretical guidance for experimentally searching for and verifying PDW states.
