Abstract:The primary purpose of this note is to provide an instructional summary of the state of the art regarding cyclic monotonicity and related notions. We will also present how these notions are tied to optimality in the optimal transport (or Monge-Kantorovich) problem.

While the proof of necessity is relatively easy, the proof of sufficiency is often more difficult or even elusive. We present here a new approach, and we show how known results are derived in this new framework and how this approach allows to prove sufficiency in situations previously not treatable.

Abstract:We prove that $c$-cyclically monotone transport plans $\pi$ optimize the Monge-Kantorovich transportation problem under an additional measurability condition. This measurability condition is always satisfied for finitely valued, lower semi-continuous cost functions. In particular, this yields a positive answer to Problem 2.25 in C. Villani's book. We emphasize that we do not need any regularity conditions as were imposed in the previous literature.

Abstract:First-order accurate monotone conservative schemes have good convergence and stability properties, and thus play a very important role in designing modern high resolution shock-capturing schemes. Do the monotone difference approximations always give a good numerical solution in sense of monotonicity preservation or suppression of oscillations? This note will investigate this problem from a numerical point of view and show that a (2K+1)-point monotone scheme may give an oscillatory solution even though the approximate solution is total variation diminishing, and satisfies maximum principle as well as discrete entropy inequality.

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this survey is to present the main important techniques and tools from variational analysis used for first and second order dynamical systems of implicit type for solving monotone inclusions and non-smooth optimization problems. The differential equations are expressed by means of the resolvent (in case of a maximally monotone set valued operator) or the proximal operator for non-smooth functions. The asymptotic analysis of the trajectories generated relies on Lyapunov theory, where the appropriate energy functional plays a decisive role. While the most part of the paper is related to monotone inclusions and convex optimization problems in the variational case, we present also results for dynamical systems for solving non-convex optimization problems, where the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property is used.

Abstract:Fejér monotonicity is a well-established property commonly observed in sequences generated by optimization algorithms. In this paper, we introduce an extension of this property, called Fejér* monotonicity, which was initially proposed in [SIAM J. Optim., 34(3), 2535-2556 (2024)]. We discuss and build upon the concept by exploring its behavior within Hilbert spaces, presenting an illustrative example and insightful results regarding weak and strong convergence. We also compare Fejér* monotonicity with other weak notions of Fejér-like monotonicity, to better establish the role of Fejér* monotonicity in optimization algorithms.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fixed metric space (possibly an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary) with an increasing sequence of distance functions and a uniform upper bound on diameter. When the metric space endowed with the pointwise limit of these distances is compact, then there is uniform and Gromov-Hausdorff (GH) convergence to this limit. When the metric space also has an integral current structure of uniformly bounded total mass (as is true for an oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary that has a uniform bound on total volume), we prove volume preserving intrinsic flat convergence to a subset of the GH limit whose closure is the whole GH limit. We provide a review of all notions and have a list of open questions at the end. Dedicated to Xiaochun Rong.

Abstract:Cyclic contractions generalize the usual contractivities in metric spaces and $b$-MSs. In this paper, we enhance several fixed point theorems related to cyclic (i) Banach self-maps, (ii) Chatterjea contractivities, (iii) Kannan self-mappings, (iv) Ćirić and Hardy-Rogers, and (v) Reich contractions including local versions in $b$-metric spaces while also delineating the associated dynamics. Especially noteworthy is the expansion of the results concerning both fixed and periodic points, which are substantiated across a wider spectrum of ratio values for the aforementioned cyclic contractions within this class of spaces. Additionally, the convergence of Picard iterations towards the fixed point is rigorously established.

Fejér monotone sequences revisited

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a localized and relativized generalization of the usual concept of Fejér monotonicity together with uniform and quantitative versions thereof and show that the main quantitative results obtained by the 1st author together with Nicolae and Leuştean in 2018 and with López-Acedo and Nicolae in 2019 respectively, extend to this generalization. Our framework, in particular, covers the sequence generated by the Dykstra algorithm while the latter is not Fejér-monotone in the ordinary sense. This gives a theoretical explanation why under a metric regularity assumption one obtains an explicit rate of convergence for Dykstra's algorithm which was proved recently by the 2nd author.

Abstract:This is an exposition on supercyclicity and weak supercyclicity, especially designed to advance further developments in weakly supercyclicity, which is a recent research field showing significant momentum during the past two decades. For operators on a normed space, the present paper explores the relationship among supercyclicity and three versions of weak supercyclicity, namely, weak l-sequential, weak sequential, and weak supercyclicities, and their connection with strong stability, weak stability, and weak quasistability. A survey of the literature on weak supercyclicity is followed by an analysis of the interplay between supercyclicity and strong stability, as well as between weak supercyclicity and weak stability. A description of the spectrum of weakly l-sequentially supercyclic operators is also given.

Abstract:For C1-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dynamical systems, it is shown that ``convergence to linearly stable cycles" is a prevalent asymptotic behavior in the measuretheoretic sense. The results are then applied to classes of time-periodic parabolic equations and give new results on prevalence of convergence to periodic solutions. In particular, for equations with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of initial conditions corresponding to the solutions that converge to spatiallyhomogeneous periodic solutions. While, for equations on radially symmetric domains, we obtain the prevalence of the set of initial values corresponding to solutions that are asymptotic to radially symmetric periodic solutions.

Optimal Transport with Cyclic Symmetry

Abstract:We propose novel fast algorithms for optimal transport (OT) utilizing a cyclic symmetry structure of input data. Such OT with cyclic symmetry appears universally in various real-world examples: image processing, urban planning, and graph processing. Our main idea is to reduce OT to a small optimization problem that has significantly fewer variables by utilizing cyclic symmetry and various optimization techniques. On the basis of this reduction, our algorithms solve the small optimization problem instead of the original OT. As a result, our algorithms obtain the optimal solution and the objective function value of the original OT faster than solving the original OT directly. In this paper, our focus is on two crucial OT formulations: the linear programming OT (LOT) and the strongly convex-regularized OT, which includes the well-known entropy-regularized OT (EROT). Experiments show the effectiveness of our algorithms for LOT and EROT in synthetic/real-world data that has a strict/approximate cyclic symmetry structure. Through theoretical and experimental results, this paper successfully introduces the concept of symmetry into the OT research field for the first time.

Abstract:Given an autohomeomorphism on an ordered topological space or its subspace, we show that it is sometimes possible to introduce a new topology-compatible order on that space so that the same map is monotonic with respect to the new ordering. We note that the existence of such a re-ordering for a given map is equivalent to the map being conjugate (topologically equivalent) to a monotonic map on some homeomorphic ordered space. We observe that the latter cannot always be chosen to be order-isomorphic to the original space. Also, we identify other routes that may lead to similar affirmative statements for other classes of spaces and maps.

Abstract:This paper studies the monotonicity of equilibrium costs and equilibrium loads in nonatomic congestion games, in response to variations of the demands. The main goal is to identify conditions under which a paradoxical non-monotone behavior can be excluded. In contrast to routing games with a single commodity, where the network topology is the sole determinant factor for monotonicity, for general congestion games with multiple commodities the structure of the strategy sets plays a crucial role. We frame our study in the general setting of congestion games, with a special focus on singleton congestion games, for which we establish the monotonicity of equilibrium loads with respect to every demand. We then provide conditions for comonotonicity of the equilibrium loads, i.e., we investigate when they jointly increase or decrease after variations of the demands. We finally extend our study from singleton congestion games to the larger class of constrained series-parallel congestion games, whose structure is reminiscent of the concept of a series-parallel network.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 2034-2062, April 2024. We consider generalized solutions of the Perona–Malik equation in dimension one, defined as all possible limits of solutions to the semidiscrete approximation in which derivatives with respect to the space variable are replaced by difference quotients. Our first result is a pathological example in which the initial data converge strictly as bounded variation functions, but strict convergence is not preserved for all positive times and, in particular, many basic quantities, such as the supremum or the total variation, do not pass to the limit. Nevertheless, in our second result we show that all our generalized solutions satisfy some of the properties of classical smooth solutions, namely, the maximum principle and the monotonicity of the total variation. The verification of the counterexample relies on a comparison result with suitable sub-/super-solutions. The monotonicity results are proved for a more general class of evolution curves, that we call [math]-evolutions.
