Abstract:Consider the Hermite β ensemble, a variant of the classical Gaussian unitary ensemble. Using Dumitriu and Edelman’s matrix model representation, we first calculate the generating function of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials. Then we obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the second-order correlation of characteristic polynomials both in the bulk (0<β<4) and at the edge (β>0). Analogs have recently been studied by Götze and Kösters for general Hermitian (real) Wigner matrices.

Abstract:In this note we first briefly review some recent progress in the study of the circular β ensemble on the unit circle, where β > 0 is a model parameter. In the special cases β = 1,2 and 4, this ensemble describes the joint probability density of eigenvalues of random orthogonal, unitary and sympletic matrices, respectively. For general β, Killip and Nenciu discovered a five-diagonal sparse matrix model, the CMV representation. This representation is new even in the case β = 2; and it has become a powerful tool for studying the circular β ensemble. We then give an elegant derivation for the moment identities of characteristic polynomials via the link with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.

Abstract:Let $\beta>0$ and consider an $n$-point process $\lambda_1, \lambda_2,..., \lambda_n$ from Hermite $\beta$ ensemble on the real line $\mathbb{R}$. Dumitriu and Edelman discovered a tri-diagonal matrix model and established the global Wigner semicircle law for normalized empirical measures. In this paper we prove that the average number of states in a small interval in the bulk converges in probability when the length of the interval is larger than $\sqrt {\log n}$, i.e., local semicircle law holds. And the number of positive states in $(0,\infty)$ is proved to fluctuate normally around its mean $n/2$ with variance like $\log n/\pi^2\beta$. The proofs rely largely on the way invented by Valk$\acute{o}$ and Vir$\acute{a}$g of counting states in any interval and the classical martingale argument.
A matrix model of a non-Hermitian $β$-ensemble

Abstract:We introduce the first random matrix model of a complex $\beta$-ensemble. The matrices are tridiagonal and can be thought of as the non-Hermitian analogue of the Hermite $\beta$-ensembles discovered by Dumitriu and Edelman (J. Math. Phys., Vol. 43, 5830 (2002)). The main feature of the model is that the exponent $\beta$ of the Vandermonde determinant in the joint probability density function (j.p.d.f.) of the eigenvalues can take any value in $\mathbb{R}_+$. However, when $\beta=2$, the j.p.d.f. does not reduce to that of the Ginibre ensemble, but it contains an extra factor expressed as a multidimensional integral over the space of the eigenvectors.

Computation of marginal eigenvalue distributions in the Laguerre and Jacobi $β$ ensembles

Abstract:We consider the problem of the exact computation of the marginal eigenvalue distributions in the Laguerre and Jacobi $\beta$ ensembles. In the case $\beta=1$ this is a question of long standing in the mathematical statistics literature. A recursive procedure to accomplish this task is given for $\beta$ a positive integer, and the parameter $\lambda_1$ a non-negative integer. This case is special due to a finite basis of elementary functions, with coefficients which are polynomials. In the Laguerre case with $\beta = 1$ and $\lambda_1 + 1/2$ a non-negative integer some evidence is given of their again being a finite basis, now consisting of elementary functions and the error function multiplied by elementary functions. Moreover, from this the corresponding distributions in the fixed trace case permit a finite basis of power functions, as also for $\lambda_1$ a non-negative integer. The fixed trace case in this setting is relevant to quantum information theory and quantum transport problem, allowing particularly the exact determination of Landauer conductance distributions in a previously intractable parameter regime. Our findings also aid in analyzing zeros of the generating function for specific gap probabilities, supporting the validity of an associated large $N$ local central limit theorem.

Abstract:We propose a Laplace approximation of the hypergeometric function with two matrix arguments expanded by Jack polynomials. This type of hypergeometric function appears in the joint density of eigenvalues of the beta-Wishart matrix for parameters β=1,2,4, where the matrix indicates the cases for reals, complexes, and quaternions, respectively. Using the Laplace approximations, we show that the joint density of the eigenvalues can be expressed using gamma density functions when population eigenvalues are infinitely dispersed. In general, for the parameter β>0, we also show that the distribution of the eigenvalue can be approximated by gamma distributions through broken arrow matrices. We compare approximated gamma distributions with empirical distributions by Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:Beta ensembles on the real line with three classical weights (Gaussian, Laguerre and Jacobi) are now realized as the eigenvalues of certain tridiagonal random matrices. The paper deals with beta Jacobi ensembles, the type with the Jacobi weight. Making use of the random matrix model, we show that in the regime where $\beta N \to const \in [0, \infty)$, with $N$ the system size, the empirical distribution of the eigenvalues converges weakly to a limiting measure which belongs to a new class of probability measures of associated Jacobi polynomials. This is analogous to the existing results for the other two classical weights. We also study the limiting behavior of the empirical measure process of beta Jacobi processes in the same regime and obtain a dynamic version of the above.

Abstract:The Dyson index, β, plays an essential role in random matrix theory, as it labels the so-called "three-fold way" that refers to the symmetries satisfied by ensembles under unitary transformations. As is known, its 1, 2, and 4 values denote the orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic classes, whose matrix elements are real, complex, and quaternion numbers, respectively. It functions, therefore, as a measure of the number of independent non-diagonal variables. On the other hand, in the case of β ensembles, which represent the tridiagonal form of the theory, it can assume any real positive value, thus losing that function. Our purpose, however, is to show that, when the Hermitian condition of the real matrices generated with a given value of β is removed, and, as a consequence, the number of non-diagonal independent variables doubles, non-Hermitian matrices exist that asymptotically behave as if they had been generated with a value 2β. Therefore, it is as if the β index were, in this way, again operative. It is shown that this effect happens for the three tridiagonal ensembles, namely, the β–Hermite, the β–Laguerre, and the β–Jacobi ensembles.

Abstract:The classical Hermite–Biehler theorem describes the zero configuration of a complex linear combination of two real polynomials whose zeros are real, simple, and strictly interlace. We provide the full characterization of the zero configuration for the case when this interlacing is broken at exactly one location. We apply this result to solve the direct and inverse spectral problem for non-Hermitian rank-one multiplicative perturbations and rank-two additive perturbations of finite Hermitian and Jacobi matrices.
Eigenvalue and pseudospectrum processes generated by nonnormal Toeplitz matrices with rank 1 perturbations

Abstract:Motivated by recent studies on a time-dependent random matrix model called the non-Hermitian matrix-valued Brownian motion, we propose two kinds of dynamical processes of $n \times n$ matrices generated by nonnormal Toeplitz matrices. As a deterministic rank 1 perturbation, $\delta J$ is added at time $m \leq n$, where $\delta \in {\mathbb{C}}$ and $J$ is the all-ones matrix. For each process, first we report the complicated motion of the eigenvalues which are numerically calculated. Then we derive the specific equation which determines the motion of non-zero eigenvalues and clarifies the time-dependence of degeneracy of the zero-eigenvalue. The Catalan numbers play an important role to describe an outlier of non-zero eigenvalues. Comparison with the solutions of this equation, it is concluded that the numerically observed non-zero eigenvalues distributing around the zero-eigenvalue are not the exact eigenvalues of the original system but of the system perturbed by uncontrolled rounding errors of computer. This phenomenon implies the high sensitivity of the degenerated zero-eigenvalue to random dense perturbations. The domain in which the eigenvalues of randomly perturbed system are distributed is identified with the pseudospectrum including the zero-eigenvalue of the original system with $\delta J$. We characterize the pseudospectrum processes using the symbol curves of the corresponding nonnormal Toeplitz operators without $\delta J$. We report new phenomena in our second model such that at each time the outermost closed simple curve cut out from the symbol curve is realized as the exact eigenvalues, but the inner part of symbol curve is reduced in size and embedded in the pseudospectrum including the zero-eigenvalue. The asymptotics of the processes in the infinite-matrix limit $n \to \infty$ are also discussed.

Critical statistics for non-Hermitian matrices

Abstract:We introduce a generalized ensemble of non-Hermitian matrices interpolating between the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, the Ginibre ensemble, and the Poisson ensemble. The joint eigenvalue distribution of this model is obtained by means of an extension of the Itzykson-Zuber formula to general complex matrices. Its correlation functions are studied both in the case of weak non-Hermiticity and in the case of strong non-Hermiticity. In the weak non-Hermiticity limit we show that the spectral correlations in the bulk of the spectrum display critical statistics: the asymptotic linear behavior of the number variance is already approached for energy differences of the order of the eigenvalue spacing. To lowest order, its slope does not depend on the degree of non-Hermiticity. Close the edge, the spectral correlations are similar to the Hermitian case. In the strong non-Hermiticity limit the crossover behavior from the Ginibre ensemble to the Poisson ensemble first appears close to the surface of the spectrum. Our model may be relevant for the description of the spectral correlations of an open disordered system close to an Anderson transition.
On uncertainty quantification of eigenvalues and eigenspaces with higher multiplicity

Abstract:We consider generalized operator eigenvalue problems in variational form with random perturbations in the bilinear forms. This setting is motivated by variational forms of partial differential equations with random input data. The considered eigenpairs can be of higher but finite multiplicity. We investigate stochastic quantities of interest of the eigenpairs and discuss why, for multiplicity greater than 1, only the stochastic properties of the eigenspaces are meaningful, but not the ones of individual eigenpairs. To that end, we characterize the Fréchet derivatives of the eigenpairs with respect to the perturbation and provide a new linear characterization for eigenpairs of higher multiplicity. As a side result, we prove local analyticity of the eigenspaces. Based on the Fréchet derivatives of the eigenpairs we discuss a meaningful Monte Carlo sampling strategy for multiple eigenvalues and develop an uncertainty quantification perturbation approach. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:We study the scaling limit of the rank-one truncation of various beta ensemble generalizations of classical unitary/orthogonal random matrices: the circular beta ensemble, the real orthogonal beta ensemble, and the circular Jacobi beta ensemble. We derive the scaling limit of the normalized characteristic polynomials and the point process limit of the eigenvalues near the point 1. We also treat multiplicative rank one perturbations of our models. Our approach relies on a representation of truncated beta ensembles given by Killip and Kozhan, together with the random operator framework developed by Valkó and Virág to study scaling limits of beta ensembles.

Stable distributions and domains of attraction for unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrix ensembles

Abstract:We consider random matrix ensembles on the set of Hermitian matrices that are heavy tailed, in particular not all moments exist, and that are invariant under the conjugate action of the unitary group. The latter property entails that the eigenvectors are Haar distributed and, therefore, factorise from the eigenvalue statistics. We prove a classification for stable matrix ensembles of this kind of matrices represented in terms of matrices, their eigenvalues and their diagonal entries with the help of the classification of the multivariate stable distributions and the harmonic analysis on symmetric matrix spaces. Moreover, we identify sufficient and necessary conditions for their domains of attraction. To illustrate our findings we discuss for instance elliptical invariant random matrix ensembles and Pólya ensembles, the latter playing a particular role in matrix convolutions. As a byproduct we generalise the derivative principle on the Hermitian matrices to general tempered distributions. This principle relates the joint probability density of the eigenvalues and the diagonal entries of the random matrix.

Robust non-ergodicity of ground state in the $β$ ensemble

Abstract:In various chaotic quantum many-body systems, the ground states show non-trivial athermal behavior despite the bulk states exhibiting thermalization. Such athermal states play a crucial role in quantum information theory and its applications. Moreover, any generic quantum many-body system in the Krylov basis is represented by a tridiagonal Lanczos Hamiltonian, which is analogous to the matrices from the $\beta$ ensemble, a well-studied random matrix model with level repulsion tunable via the parameter $\beta$. Motivated by this, here we focus on the localization properties of the ground and anti-ground states of the $\beta$ ensemble. Both analytically and numerically, we show that both the edge states demonstrate non-ergodic (fractal) properties for $\beta\sim\mathcal{O}(1)$ while the typical bulk states are ergodic. Surprisingly, the fractal dimension of the edge states remain three time smaller than that of the bulk states irrespective of the global phase of the $\beta$ ensemble. In addition to the fractal dimensions, we also consider the distribution of the localization centers of the spectral edge states, their mutual separation, as well as the spatial and correlation properties of the first excited states.

Abstract:We show that for $\beta \ge 1$ the semigroups of $\beta$-Laguerre and $\beta$-Jacobi processes of different dimensions are intertwined in analogy to a similar result for $\beta$-Dyson Brownian motion recently obtained by Ramanan and Shkolnikov. These intertwining relations generalize to arbitrary $\beta \ge 1$ the ones obtained for $\beta=2$ by the author, O'Connell and Warren between $h$-transformed Karlin-McGregor semigroups. Moreover they form the key step towards constructing a multilevel process in a Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern leaving certain Gibbs measures invariant. Finally as a by product we obtain a relation between general $\beta$-Jacobi ensembles of different dimensions.

The Interpolating Airy Kernels for the beta=1 and beta=4 Elliptic Ginibre Ensembles

Abstract:We consider two families of non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices, namely the elliptical Ginibre ensembles of asymmetric N-by-N matrices with Dyson index beta=1 (real elements) and with beta=4 (quaternion-real elements). Both ensembles have already been solved for finite N using the method of skew-orthogonal polynomials, given for these particular ensembles in terms of Hermite polynomials in the complex plane. In this paper we investigate the microscopic weakly non-Hermitian large-N limit of each ensemble in the vicinity of the largest or smallest real eigenvalue. Specifically, we derive the limiting matrix-kernels for each case, from which all the eigenvalue correlation functions can be determined. We call these new kernels the "interpolating" Airy kernels, since we can recover -- as opposing limiting cases -- not only the well-known Airy kernels for the Hermitian ensembles, but also the complementary error function and Poisson kernels for the maximally non-Hermitian ensembles at the edge of the spectrum. Together with the known interpolating Airy kernel for beta=2, which we rederive here as well, this completes the analysis of all three elliptical Ginibre ensembles in the microscopic scaling limit at the spectral edge.

We prove that there exist coupling constant thresholds $\mu_o,\mu^o\ge0$ such that for any $\mu\in[-\mu^o,\mu_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_\mu$ is empty and for any $\mu\in \mathbb{R}\setminus[-\mu^o,\mu_o]$ the discrete spectrum of $\hat h_\mu$ is a singleton $\{e(\mu)\},$ and $e(\mu)<0$ for $\mu>\mu_o$ and $e(\mu)>4d^2$ for $\mu<-\mu^o.$ Moreover, we study the asymptotics of $e(\mu)$ as $\mu\to\mu_o$ and $\mu\to -\mu^o$ as well as $\mu\to\pm\infty.$ The asymptotics highly depend on $d$ and $\hat v.$

Optimal Lower Bound on Eigenvector Overlaps for non-Hermitian Random Matrices

Abstract:We consider large non-Hermitian $N\times N$ matrices with an additive independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) noise for each matrix elements. We show that already a small noise of variance $1/N$ completely thermalises the bulk singular vectors, in particular they satisfy the strong form of Quantum Unique Ergodicity (QUE) with an optimal speed of convergence. In physics terms, we thus extend the Eigenstate Thermalisation Hypothesis, formulated originally by [Deutsch 1991] and proven for Wigner matrices in [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020], to arbitrary non-Hermitian matrices with an i.i.d. noise. As a consequence we obtain an optimal lower bound on the diagonal overlaps of the corresponding non-Hermitian eigenvectors. This quantity, also known as the (square of the) eigenvalue condition number measuring the sensitivity of the eigenvalue to small perturbations, has notoriously escaped rigorous treatment beyond the explicitly computable Ginibre ensemble apart from the very recent upper bounds given in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2005.08930" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.08930">arXiv:2005.08930</a>] and [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2005.08908" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.08908">arXiv:2005.08908</a>]. As a key tool, we develop a new systematic decomposition of general observables in random matrix theory that governs the size of products of resolvents with deterministic matrices in between.
