Abstract:We consider two families of non-Hermitian Gaussian random matrices, namely the elliptical Ginibre ensembles of asymmetric N-by-N matrices with Dyson index beta=1 (real elements) and with beta=4 (quaternion-real elements). Both ensembles have already been solved for finite N using the method of skew-orthogonal polynomials, given for these particular ensembles in terms of Hermite polynomials in the complex plane. In this paper we investigate the microscopic weakly non-Hermitian large-N limit of each ensemble in the vicinity of the largest or smallest real eigenvalue. Specifically, we derive the limiting matrix-kernels for each case, from which all the eigenvalue correlation functions can be determined. We call these new kernels the "interpolating" Airy kernels, since we can recover -- as opposing limiting cases -- not only the well-known Airy kernels for the Hermitian ensembles, but also the complementary error function and Poisson kernels for the maximally non-Hermitian ensembles at the edge of the spectrum. Together with the known interpolating Airy kernel for beta=2, which we rederive here as well, this completes the analysis of all three elliptical Ginibre ensembles in the microscopic scaling limit at the spectral edge.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve several key problems in non - Hermitian random matrix theory, especially the microscopic weakly non - Hermitian limit problem in the Elliptic Ginibre ensemble for different Dyson indices ($\beta = 1$, $\beta = 2$, $\beta = 4$). Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Microscopic weakly non - Hermitian limit**: The paper explores the microscopic weakly non - Hermitian limit near the maximum or minimum real eigenvalue. This limit refers to the situation where the non - Hermiticity parameter $\tau$ approaches 1 as the matrix size $N$ tends to infinity. In this case, appropriate scaling of the eigenvalues is required to obtain a limit different from the Hermitian case. 2. **Interpolating Airy kernel**: For each Dyson index ($\beta = 1$, $\beta = 2$, $\beta = 4$), the paper derives the corresponding interpolating Airy kernel. These kernel functions can be used to determine all eigenvalue - related functions. An important property of the interpolating Airy kernel is that by taking different limits, the known Hermitian Airy kernel as well as the complementary error function and Poisson kernel in the strongly non - Hermitian case can be recovered. 3. **Verification of different limits**: The paper verifies whether the interpolating Airy kernel can correctly recover the known results in the Hermitian limit and the strongly non - Hermitian limit. This includes the inspection of eigenvalue density and other related functions. 4. **Universality problem**: The paper also discusses the universality problem in non - Hermitian random matrix theory. Although the universality in Hermitian random matrix theory has been well understood, the study of universality in the non - Hermitian case is relatively scarce. Through the study of the interpolating Airy kernel, the paper provides further evidence for the universality of non - Hermitian random matrix theory. ### Specific problems and methods - **Case of $\beta = 2$**: The paper re - derives the interpolating Airy kernel for $\beta = 2$ and verifies the consistency in the Hermitian limit and the strongly non - Hermitian limit. This is to prepare for the more complex cases of $\beta = 4$ and $\beta = 1$. - **Case of $\beta = 4$**: The paper derives in detail the interpolating Airy kernel for $\beta = 4$ and verifies the results in different limits. Since the case of $\beta = 4$ involves quaternion matrices, its complexity is relatively high. - **Case of $\beta = 1$**: The paper derives the interpolating Airy kernel for $\beta = 1$ and conducts a similar verification. The case of $\beta = 1$ involves real matrices, and its processing method is different from the other two cases. ### Main contributions - **New interpolating Airy kernels**: The paper provides new interpolating Airy kernels for the Elliptic Ginibre ensemble with $\beta = 1$ and $\beta = 4$, filling the gaps in existing research. - **Evidence of universality**: Through the study of the interpolating Airy kernel, the paper provides further evidence for the universality of non - Hermitian random matrix theory. - **Limit verification**: The paper verifies that in different limits, the interpolating Airy kernel can correctly recover the known results, thereby enhancing the reliability and applicability of the theory. In conclusion, through the study of the microscopic weakly non - Hermitian limit of the Elliptic Ginibre ensemble under different Dyson indices, this paper makes an important contribution to the development of non - Hermitian random matrix theory.
