Abstract:We prove the equivalence between the integral central limit theorem and the local central limit theorem for two-body potentials with long-range interactions on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d\ge 1$. The spin space can be an arbitrary, possibly unbounded subset of the real axis with a suitable a-priori measure. For general unbounded spins, our method works at high-enough temperature, but for bounded spins our results hold for every temperature. Our proof relies on the control of the integrated characteristic function, which is achieved by dividing the integration into three different regions, following a standard approach proposed forty years ago by Campanino, Del Grosso and Tirozzi. The bounds required in the different regions are obtained through cluster-expansion techniques. For bounded spins, the arbitrariness of the temperature is achieved through a decimation ("dilution") technique, also introduced in the later reference.

Abstract:We provide a rigorous proof of the absence of nontrivial local conserved quantities in all spin-1/2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction, except for known integrable systems. This result shows that there are no further integrable system that awaits to be discovered. Our finding also implies that there is no intermediate systems with a finite number of nontrivial local conserved quantities. In addition, we clarify all short-support conserved quantities in non-integrable systems, which we need to take into account in analyses of thermalization and level statistics.

Abstract:We consider the determinantal point processes associated with the spectral projectors of a Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}$, with a smooth confining potential. In the semiclassical limit, where the number of particles tends to infinity, we obtain a Szegő-type central limit theorem (CLT) for the fluctuations of smooth linear statistics. More precisely, the Laplace transform of any statistic converges without renormalization to a Gaussian limit with a $H^{1/2}$-type variance, which depends on the potential. In the one-well (one-cut) case, using the quantum action-angle theorem and additional micro-local tools, we reduce the problem to the asymptotics of Fredholm determinants of certain approximately Toeplitz operators. In the multi-cut case, we show that for generic potentials, a similar result holds and the contributions of each wells are independent in the limit.

Abstract:It has been known for some time that the exchange-correlation potential in time-dependent density functional theory is an intrinsically nonlocal functional of the density as soon as one goes beyond the adiabatic approximation. In this paper we show that a much more severe nonlocality problem, with a completely different physical origin, plagues the exchange-correlation potentials in time-dependent spin density functional theory. We show how the use of the spin current density as the basic variable solves this problem, and we provide an explicit local expression for the exchange-correlation fields as functionals of the spin currents.

Abstract:Finite, bound, many-body systems, where the interaction operator, $V=\sum v_{ij}$, is local and happens to strongly dominate the kinetic energy operator, $T=\sum t_i$, display a classical limit from diagonalizing $V$ alone, hence a clear picture of interparticle correlations, such as steric blocking emerges. This limit exhibits intrinsic symmetries and also fluctuations from mass formulae. The present work investigates how such emergent symmetries and fluctuations might be extrapolated to physical situations where $T$ is reinstated.

Quantum concentration inequalities and equivalence of the thermodynamical ensembles: an optimal mass transport approach

Abstract:We prove new concentration inequalities for quantum spin systems which apply to any local observable measured on any product state or on any state with exponentially decaying correlations. Our results do not require the spins to be arranged in a regular lattice, and cover the case of observables that contain terms acting on spins at arbitrary distance. Moreover, we introduce a local W1 distance, which quantifies the distinguishability of two states with respect to local observables. We prove a transportation-cost inequality stating that the local W1 distance between a generic state and a state with exponentially decaying correlations is upper bounded by a function of their relative entropy. Finally, we apply such inequality to prove the equivalence between the canonical and microcanonical ensembles of quantum statistical mechanics and the weak eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for the Hamiltonians whose Gibbs states have exponentially decaying correlations.

The scaling limit of boundary spin correlations in non-integrable Ising models

Abstract:We consider a class of non-integrable 2D Ising models obtained by perturbing the nearest-neighbor model via a weak, finite range potential which preserves translation and spin-flip symmetry, and we study its critical theory in the half-plane. We prove that the leading order long-distance behavior of the correlation functions for spins on the boundary is the same as for the nearest-neighbor model, up to an analytic multiplicative renormalization constant. In particular, the scaling limit is the Pfaffian of an explicit matrix. The proof is based on an exact representation of the generating function of correlations in terms of a Grassmann integral and on a multiscale analysis thereof, generalizing previous results to include observables located on the boundary.

Abstract:The Heisenberg spin chain is a canonical integrable model. As such, it features stable ballistically propagating quasiparticles, but spin transport is sub-ballistic at any nonzero temperature: an initially localized spin fluctuation spreads in time $t$ to a width $t^{2/3}$. This exponent, as well as the functional form of the dynamical spin correlation function, suggest that spin transport is in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. However, the full counting statistics of magnetization is manifestly incompatible with KPZ scaling. A simple two-mode hydrodynamic description, derivable from microscopic principles, captures both the KPZ scaling of the correlation function and the coarse features of the full counting statistics, but remains to be numerically validated. These results generalize to any integrable spin chain invariant under a continuous nonabelian symmetry, and are surprisingly robust against moderately strong integrability-breaking perturbations that respect the nonabelian symmetry.

Generalization of the Central Limit Theorem to Critical Systems: Revisiting Perturbation Theory

Abstract:The Central Limit Theorem does not hold for strongly correlated stochastic variables, as is the case for statistical systems close to criticality. Recently, the calculation of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the magnetization mode has been performed with the functional renormalization group in the case of the three-dimensional Ising model [Balog et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 129}, 210602 (2022)]. It has been shown in that article that there exists an entire family of universal PDFs parameterized by $\zeta=\lim_{L,\xi_\infty\rightarrow\infty} L/\xi_\infty$ which is the ratio of the system size $L$ to the bulk correlation length $\xi_{\infty}$ with both the thermodynamic limit and the critical limit being taken simultaneously. We show how these PDFs or, equivalently, the rate functions which are their logarithm, can be systematically computed perturbatively in the $\epsilon=4-d$ expansion. We determine the whole family of universal PDFs and show that they are in good qualitative agreement with Monte Carlo data. Finally, we conjecture on how to significantly improve the quantitative agreement between the one-loop and the numerical results.

Abstract:We study a continuous-time random walk on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ in an environment of random conductances taking values in $(0,\infty)$. For a static environment, we extend the quenched local limit theorem to the case of a general speed measure, given suitable ergodicity and moment conditions on the conductances and on the speed measure. Under stronger moment conditions, an annealed local limit theorem is also derived. Furthermore, an annealed local limit theorem is exhibited in the case of time-dependent conductances, under analogous moment and ergodicity assumptions. This dynamic local limit theorem is then applied to prove a scaling limit result for the space-time covariances in the Ginzburg-Landau $\nabla\phi$ model. We also show that the associated Gibbs distribution scales to a Gaussian free field. These results apply to convex potentials for which the second derivative may be unbounded.

Abstract:We study analytically the Kondo lattice model with an additional nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interaction in the framework of large-N theory. We find that there is a local quantum critical point between two phases, a normal Fermi-liquid and a spin-liquid in which the spins are decoupled from the conduction electrons. The local spin susceptibility displays a power-law divergence throughout the spin liquid phase. We check the reliability of the large-N results by solving by quantum Monte Carlo simulation the N=2 spin-liquid problem with no conduction electrons and find qualitative agreement. We show that the spin-liquid phase is unstable at low temperatures, suggestive of a first-order transition to an ordered phase.

A Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula accounting for nonlocal antisymmetric exchange interactions

Abstract:The present study concerns the nonlocal-to-local convergence of a family of exchange energy functionals in the limit of very short-range interactions. The analysis accounts for both symmetric and antisymmetric exchange. Our result is twofold. First, we extend the Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu formula to encompass the scenario where antisymmetric contributions are encoded into the energy. Second, we prove that, under physically relevant assumptions on the families of exchange kernels, the family of nonlocal functionals Gamma-converges to their local counterparts. As a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain a rigorous justification of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in chiral magnets under the form commonly adopted in the variational theory of micromagnetism when modeling antisymmetric exchange interactions.

Abstract:We study the microscopic mechanism controlling the interplay between local charge and local spin fluctuations in correlated electron systems via a thorough investigation of the generalized on-site charge susceptibility of several fundamental many-electron models, such as the Hubbard atom, the Anderson impurity model, and the Hubbard model. By decomposing the numerically determined generalized susceptibility in terms of physically transparent single-boson exchange processes, we unveil the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the breakdown of the self-consistent many-electron perturbation expansion. In particular, we unambiguously identify the origin of the significant suppression of its diagonal entries in (Matsubara) frequency space and the slight increase of the off-diagonal ones which cause the breakdown. The suppression effect on the diagonal elements originates directly from the electronic scattering on local magnetic moments, reflecting their increasingly longer lifetime as well as their enhanced effective coupling with the electrons. Instead, the slight and diffuse enhancement of the off-diagonal terms can be mostly ascribed to multiboson scattering processes. The strong intertwining between spin and charge sectors is partly weakened at the Kondo temperature due to a progressive reduction of the effective spin-fermion coupling of local magnetic fluctuations in the low frequency regime. Our analysis, thus, clarifies the precise mechanism through which the physical information is transferred between different scattering channels of interacting electron problems and highlights the pivotal role played by such an intertwining in the physics of correlated electrons beyond the perturbative regime.
