Abstract:We show that the image of a 2-dimensional set under d-dimensional, 2-parameter Brownian sheet can have positive Lebesgue measure, if and only if the set in question has positive (d/2)-dimensional Bessel-Riesz capacity. Our methods solve a problem of J.-P. Kahane.

Abstract:A generalized Anderson single-impurity model with off-site Coulomb interactions is derived from the extended three-band Hubbard model, originally proposed to describe the physics of the copper oxides. Using the Abelian bosonization technique and canonical transformations, an effective Hamiltonian is derived in the strong-coupling limit, which is essentially analogous to the Toulouse limit of the ordinary Kondo problem. In this limit, the effective Hamiltonian can be exactly solved, with a mixed-valence quantum critical point separating two different Fermi-liquid phases, i.e., the Kondo phase and the empty orbital phase. In the mixed-valence quantum critical regime, the local moment is only partially quenched and x-ray edge singularities are generated. Around the quantum critical point, a type of non-Fermi-liquid behavior is predicted with an extra specific heat C-imp similar to T-1/4 and a singular spin susceptibility chi(imp)similar to T-3/4. At the same time, the effective Hamiltonian under single occupancy is transformed into a resonant-level model, from which the correct Kondo physical properties (specific heat, spin susceptibility, and an enhanced Wilson ratio) are easily rederived. Finally, a brief discussion is given to relate these theoretical results to observations in UPdxCu5-x (x=1,1.5) alloys, which show single-impurity critical behavior consistent with our predictions.
Bose-Fermi Anderson Model with SU(2) Symmetry: Continuous-Time Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Abstract:In quantum critical heavy fermion systems, local moments are coupled to both collective spin fluctuations and conduction electrons. As such, the Bose-Fermi Kondo model, describing the coupling of a local moment to both a bosonic and a fermionic bath, has been of extensive interest. For the model in the presence of SU(2) spin rotational symmetry, questions have been raised about its phase diagram. Here we develop a version of continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CT-QMC) method suitable for addressing this issue; this procedure can reach sufficiently low temperatures while preserving the SU(2) symmetry. Using this method for the Bose-Fermi Anderson model, we clarify the renormalization-group fixed points and the phase diagram for the case with a constant fermionic-bath density of states and a power-law bosonic-bath spectral function $\rho_{b}(\omega) \propto \omega^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). We find two types of Kondo destruction QCP, depending on the power-law exponent $s$ in the bosonic bath spectrum. For $s^{*}<s<1$, both types of QCPs exist and, in the parameter regime accessible by an analytical $\epsilon$-expansion renormalization-group calculation (here $\epsilon=1-s$), the CT-QMC result is fully consistent with prior predictions by the latter method. For $s<s^{*}$, there is only one type of QCP. At both type of Kondo destruction QCPs, we find that the exponent of the local spin susceptibility $\eta$ obeys the relation $\eta=\epsilon$, which has important implications for Kondo destruction QCP in the Kondo lattice problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the influence of spatial fluctuations in a two-dimentional Kondo-Lattice model (KLM) with anti-ferromagnetic couplings. To accomplish this, we first present an implementation of the dual-fermion (DF) approach based on the hybridization expansion continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver (CT-HYB), which allows us to consistently compare the local and non-local descriptions of this model. We find that, the inclusion of non-locality restores the self-energy dispersion of the conduction electrons, {\it i.e.} the $\vec{k}$ dependence of $\Sigma(\vec{k}, i\omega_{n})$. The anti-ferromagnetic correlations result in an additional symmetry in $\Sigma(\vec{k}, i\omega_{n})$, which is well described by the Néel antiferromagnetic wave-vector. A "metal"-"anti-ferromagnetic insulator"-"Kondo insulator" transition is observed at finite temperatures, which is driven by the competition of the effective RKKY interaction (at the weak coupling regime) and the Kondo singlet formation mechanism (at the strong coupling regime). Away from half-filling, the anti-ferromagnetic phase becomes unstable against hole doping. The system tends to develop a ferromagnetic phase with the spin susceptibility $\chi_{s}(Q)$ peaking at $Q=\Gamma$. However, for small $J/t$, no divergence of $\chi_{s}(\Gamma)$ is really observed, thus, we find no sign of long-range ferromagnetism in the hole-doped two-dimension KLM. The ferromagnetism is found to be stable at larger $J/t$ regime. Interestingly, we find the local approximation employed in this work, {\it i.e.} the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), is still a very good description of the KLM, especially in the hole-doped case. However, at half-filling, the non-local fluctuation effect is indeed pronounced. We observe a strong reduction of the critical coupling strength for the onset of the Kondo insulating phase.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of the $t$-$J$ Model in the Strange Metal Phase: $U(1)$ Gauge Theory Consistent with Local Constraints

Abstract:In the slave particle representation with $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, local constraints on physical states characterized by various mean field solutions belong to Dirac's second-class ones. Although constrained systems are extensively investigated, realistic methods to solve the gauge theory problem with second-class constraints are yet to be developed. We formulate a Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) quantization theory, called consistent $U(1)$ gauge theory, that is consistent with both first- and second-class local constraints for strongly correlated condensed matter systems. In our consistent $U(1)$ gauge theory, the redundant gauge degrees of freedom are removed by proper gauge fixing conditions while the constraints are exactly retained and the gauge invariance is guaranteed by the BRST symmetry. Furthermore, the gauge fixing conditions endow the gauge field with dynamics. This turns the strongly correlated electron model into a weakly coupled slave boson model, so most of the system's physical properties can be calculated by the conventional quantum many-body perturbation method. We focus on the property of the strange metal phase in the $t$-$J$ model. The electron momentum distribution and the spectral function are calculated, and the non-Fermi liquid behavior agrees with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements for cuprate materials. We also study the electromagnetic responses of the strange metal state. The observed non-Fermi liquid anomalies are captured by our calculations. Especially, we find that the Hall resistivity decreases as temperature increases, and the sign of the Hall resistivity varies from negative to positive when the dopant concentration varies from optimal doping to underdoping in the strange metal regime.

Unified non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity in a model of strongly-correlated systems

Abstract:We study a model of strongly-correlated systems that incorporates phases such as Fermi liquids, non-Fermi liquids, and superconductivity, in addition to potential intertwined orders. The model describes Fermi surfaces of spinful electron gas or electron liquid coupled to bosons via an intermediate gauge field. Effectively, the coupling imposes constraints and interactions between the fermion spin and the local boson density. This grants the bosons the meaning as the Schwinger boson of the magnetic order and allows us to probe a larger phase space, rather than around the quantum critical point. We design the initial model so that after the boson and gauge fields are integrated out exactly, the resulting fermion-only effective theory only consists of several local interactions, allowing controlled weak-coupling interpretation for certain parameter regions. Consequently, we find a non-Fermi liquid whose degrees of freedom in the effective theory take the form of an emergent Fermi surface that has a different Luttinger volume from the original fermions, therefore explicitly violates the Luttinger theorem. Further, this allows a d-wave superconducting instability if the effective interacting induced by boson coupling is in the relevant pairing channel. When the emergent Fermi surface undergoes a Lifshitz transition, the carrier type changes. In addition, we attribute the Mott insulating behavior in the strong coupling limit to the loss of emergent Fermi surface and argue the possibility of coexisting magnetic order. Our effective theory also suggests the possibility of charge density waves as a consequence of effective strong repulsion and is independent of the Fermi-surface-nesting scenario. We discuss the possible optimal conditions for higher superconducting transition temperature and potential relevances and implications for realistic materials.
Non-Fermi-Liquid Theory Of A Compactified Anderson Single-Impurity Model

Abstract:We consider a version of the symmetric Anderson impurity model (compactified) which has a non-Fermi-liquid weak-coupling regime. We find that in the Majorana fermion representation the perturbation theory can be conveniently developed in terms of Pfaffian determinants and we use this formalism to calculate the impurity free energy, self-energies, and vertex functions. We also derive expressions for the impurity and the local conduction-electron charge and spin-dynamical susceptibilities in terms of the impurity self-energies and vertex functions. In the second-order perturbation theory, a linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity is obtained, and the leading corrections to the impurity specific heat are found to behave as Tin T. The impurity static susceptibilities have terms in lnT to zero, first, and second order, and corrections of ln(2)T to second order as well. The conduction-electron static susceptibilities, and the singlet superconducting paired static susceptibility at the impurity site, are found to have second-order corrections lnT, which we interpret as an indication that a singlet conduction-electron pairing resonance forms at the Fermi level (the chemical potential). When the perturbation theory is extended to third order logarithmic divergences are found in the only vertex function Gamma(0,1,2,3)(0,0,0,0), which is nonvanishing in the zero-frequency limit. We use the multiplicative renormalization-group (RG) method to sum all the leading-order logarithmic contributions. These give rise to a weak-coupling low-temperature energy scale T-c=Delta exp[-(1/9)(pi Delta/U)(2)], which is the combination of the two independent coupling parameters. The RG scaling equation is also derived and shows that the dimensionless coupling constant (U) over bar=U/pi Delta is increased as the high-energy scale Delta is reduced, so our perturbational results can be justified in the regime T>T-c. Below T-c the perturbation theory breaks down.
Strong Local Bosonic Fluctuation: The Key to Understanding Strongly Correlated Metals

Abstract:In this paper, we present a theoretical framework for understanding the Extremely Correlated Fermi Liquid (ECFL) phenomenon within the $U=\infty$ Hubbard model. Our approach involves deriving equations of motion for the single-particle Green's function $G$ and its associated self-energy $\Sigma$, which involves the product of the bosonic correlation function comprising both density ($D_N$) and spin ($D_S$) correlations with $G$. By solving these equations self-consistently, we explore the behavior of $G$, $D_N$, and $D_S$ as functions of frequency, temperature, and hole concentration. Our results reveal distinct coherent and incoherent Fermi liquid regimes characterized by the presence or absence of quasiparticle excitations. Additionally, we analyze the intrinsic dc resistivity $\rho(T)$, observing a crossover from $T^2$ to linear behavior with increasing temperature. Our findings delineate Fermi liquid, quantum incoherent, and `classical' regimes in strongly correlated systems, emphasizing the importance of quantum diffusive local charge and spin fluctuations.

From Weak- to Strong-Coupling Mesoscopic Fermi Liquids

Abstract:We study mesoscopic fluctuations in a system in which there is a continuous connection between two distinct Fermi liquids, asking whether the mesoscopic variation in the two limits is correlated. The particular system studied is an Anderson impurity coupled to a finite mesoscopic reservoir described by the random matrix theory, a structure which can be realized using quantum dots. We use the slave boson mean-field approach to connect the levels of the uncoupled system to those of the strong-coupling Nozieres' Fermi liquid. Regular and Singular Fermi Liquid fixed points in quantum impurity models

Abstract:We show that thermodynamics is insufficient to probe the nature of the low energy dynamics of quantum impurity models and a more subtle analysis based on scattering theory is required. Traditionally, quantum impurity models are classified into one of two categories: Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, depending on the analytic properties of the various thermodynamic quntities. We show, however, that even when a quantum impurity model is a Fermi liquid (an incoming electron at the Fermi level scatters elastically off the impurity), one may find singular thermodynamic behavior if characteristics of quasiparticles are not analytic near the Fermi surface. Prompted by this observation, we divide Fermi liquids into two categories: regular Fermi liquids and singular Fermi Liquids. The difference between regular Fermi liquids, singular Fermi liquids, and non-Fermi liquids fixed points is explained using properties of the many-body S-matrix for impurity quasiparticle scattering. Using the Bethe-Ansatz and numerical RG, we show that whereas the ordinary Kondo Model is a regular Fermi liquid the underscreened Kondo model is a a singular Fermi liquid. This results in a breakdown of Nozieres' Fermi liquid picture for the underscreened and explains the singular thermodynamic behavior noticed in Bethe Ansatz and large-N calculations. Furthermore, we show that conventional regular Fermi liquid behavior is re-established in an external magnetic field H, but with a density of states which diverges as 1/H. Possible connections with the field-tuned quantum criticality recently observed in heavy electron materials are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a multi-band extension to the periodic Anderson model. We use a single site DMFT(NRG) in order to study the impact of the conduction band mediated effective hopping of the correlated electrons between the correlated orbitals onto the heavy Fermi-liquid formation. Whereas the hybridization of a single impurity model with two distinct conduction bands always adds up constructively, T_{K}\propto \exp(-\mathrm{const}\, U/(\Gamma_1+\Gamma_2)) T K ∝ exp ( − c o n s t U / ( Γ 1 + Γ 2 ) ) , we show that this does not have to be the case in lattice models, where, in remarkable contrast, also an low-energy Fermi-liquid scale T_0\propto \exp(-\mathrm{const}\, U/(\Gamma_1-\Gamma_2)) T 0 ∝ exp ( − c o n s t U / ( Γ 1 − Γ 2 ) ) can emerge due to quantum interference effects in multi-band models, where U U denotes the local Coulomb matrix element of the correlated orbitals and \Gamma_i Γ i the local hybridization strength of band i i . At high symmetry points, heavy Fermi-liquid formation is suppressed which is associated with a breakdown of the Kondo effect. This results in an asymptotically scale-invariant (i.e., power-law) spectrum of the correlated orbitals \propto|\omega|^{1/3} ∝ | ω | 1 / 3 , indicating non-Fermi liquid properties of the quantum critical point, and a small Fermi surface including only the light quasi-particles. This orbital selective Mott phase demonstrates the possibility of metallic local criticality within the general framework of ordinary single site DMFT.

Fermi liquids beyond the forward scattering limit: the role of non-forward scatterings for scale invariance and instabilities

Abstract:Landau Fermi liquid theory is a fixed point theory of metals that includes the forward scattering amplitudes as exact marginal couplings. However, the fixed point theory that only includes the strict forward scatterings is non-local in real space. In this paper, we revisit the Fermi liquid theory using the field-theoretic functional renormalization group formalism and show how the scale invariant fixed point emerges as a local theory, which includes not only the forward scatterings but also non-forward scatterings with small but non-zero momentum transfers. In the low-energy limit, the non-forward scattering amplitude takes a scale invariant form. If the bare coupling is attractive beyond a critical strength, the coupling function exhibits a run-away flow drived by non-forward scattering amplitudes, signifying potential instabilities in particle-hole channels. The pairing interaction also obeys a scaling relation if the center of mass momentum of Cooper pairs is comparable with energy. The coupling functions fully capture the universal low-energy dynamics of the collective modes and instabilities of Fermi liquids. The divergence of the cocupling function in the particle-hole channel beyond a critical interaction suggests an instability toward an ordered phase with a momentum that depends on the interaction strength. At the critical interaction, the instability corresponds to the uniform Pomeranchuk or Stoner instability, but the momentum of the leading instability becomes non-zero for stronger attractive interaction. In the particle-particle channel, the coupling function reveals the dynamics of the unstable mode associated with the BCS instability. When an unstable normal metal evolves into the superconducting state, there exists a period in which a superconducting state with spatially non-uniform phase appears due to the presence of unstable Cooperon modes with non-zero momenta.

Mesoscopic Anderson Box: Connecting Weak to Strong Coupling

Abstract:Both the weakly coupled and strong coupling Anderson impurity problems are characterized by a Fermi-liquid theory with weakly interacting quasiparticles. In an Anderson box, mesoscopic fluctuations of the effective single particle properties will be large. We study how the statistical fluctuations at low temperature in these two problems are connected, using random matrix theory and the slave boson mean field approximation (SBMFA). First, for a resonant level model such as results from the SBMFA, we find the joint distribution of energy levels with and without the resonant level present. Second, if only energy levels within the Kondo resonance are considered, the distributions of perturbed levels collapse to universal forms for both orthogonal and unitary ensembles for all values of the coupling. These universal curves are described well by a simple Wigner-surmise type toy model. Third, we study the fluctuations of the mean field parameters in the SBMFA, finding that they are small. Finally, the change in the intensity of an eigenfunction at an arbitrary point is studied, such as is relevant in conductance measurements: we find that the introduction of the strongly-coupled impurity considerably changes the wave function but that a substantial correlation remains.
Monte Carlo Study of Critical Fermi Surface with Spatial Disorder Interactions

Abstract:Non-Fermi liquids are an important topic in condensed matter physics, as their characteristics challenge the framework of traditional Fermi liquid theory and reveal the complex behavior of electrons in strongly interacting systems. Despite some progress in this field, linear-in-temperature resistance and inverse-in-frequency tail of optical conductivity are unresolved issues in non-Fermi liquids. Both the experimentally observed smeared region and the theoretically predicted marginal Fermi liquid suggest that spatial disorder seems to be an important driver of these phenomena. By performing large-scale determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations in the ferromagnetic spin-fermion model, we investigated the role of spatial disorder in the critical Fermi surface (FS) of this model. We proposed a corrected theory of our system, which is based on a modified Eliashberg theory and a universal theory of strange metals. This theory agrees well with the data obtained from DQMC. Our findings offer strong and unbiased validation of the universal theory of strange metals, broaden the applicability of the modified Eliashberg theory and provide insights for numerically searching for marginal Fermi liquid and linear-in-temperature resistance.

Signatures of metal to insulator crossover in the repulsive Fermi Hubbard model through static correlations

Abstract:Cold atom systems provide a rich platform to realize strongly interacting condensed matter systems, and recent progress in fluorescence imaging technique has enabled identification of nontrivial doublon, singlon, and holon correlation functions. We show that these correlators can be used to identify the conditions under which local moments form in an interacting electronic system. Toward this end, we report a Determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) study of such correlation functions in the two-dimensional repulsive Fermi Hubbard model on a square lattice as a function of doping, interaction strength and temperature. We find definite signatures of the crossover from small U(band regime) to large U(correlated insulator regime). Our key findings are: (1) An opening of a charge gap in the thermodynamic density of states is accompanied by the appearance of temperature insensitive points in the equation of state at finite doping, which can be used to distinguish the band regime in cold atom experiments. (2) Nearest neighbor doublon holon correlations track the opening of charge gap; these compete with density correlations to generate moment moment correlations that show different behavior in the metallic and correlated insulator regime. (3) Non local correlation functions can be used to distinguish between the two regimes, both at and away from half filling. Our results allow comparisons of different correlation functions with recent experimental findings and guide further experimental investigations.

Spectral properties of strongly correlated multi-impurity models in the Kondo insulator regime: Emergent coherence, metallic surface states, and quantum phase transitions

Abstract:We investigate the real-space spectral properties of strongly correlated multi-impurity arrays in the Kondo insulator regime. Employing a recently developed mapping onto an effective correlated cluster problem makes the problem accessible to the numerical renormalization group. The evolution of the spectrum as a function of cluster size and cluster site is studied. We applied the extended Lieb-Mattis theorem to predict whether the spectral function must vanish at the Fermi energy developing a true pseudogap or whether the spectral function remains finite at ω=0 . Our numerical renormalization group spectra confirm the predictions of the theorem and shows a metallic behavior at the surface of a cluster prevailing in arbitrary spatial dimensions. We present a conventional minimal extension of a particle-hole symmetric Anderson lattice model at U=0 that leads to a gapped bulk band but a surface band with mainly f -orbital character for weak and moderate hybridization strength. The change in the site-dependent spectra upon introducing a Kondo hole in the center of the cluster is presented as a function of the hole-orbital energy. Abstract:We consider the low temperature regime of the mesoscopic Kondo problem, and in particular the relevance of a Fermi-liquid description of this regime. Mesoscopic fluctuations of both the quasiparticle energy levels and the corresponding wavefunctions are large in this case. These mesoscopic fluctuations make the traditional approach to Fermi-liquids impracticable, as it assumes the existence of a limited number of relevant parameters. We show here how this difficulty can be overcome and discuss the relationship between the resulting Fermi-liquid description “à la Nozières” and the mean field slave fermion approximation.
Emergent Properties of the Periodic Anderson Model: a High-Resolution, Real-Frequency Study of Heavy-Fermion Quantum Criticality

Abstract:We study paramagnetic quantum criticality in the periodic Anderson model (PAM) using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) as an impurity solver. The PAM describes an itinerant $c$ band hybridizing with a localized $f$ band. At $T=0$, it exhibits a hybridization tuned Kondo breakdown quantum critical point (KB-QCP) from a Kondo to an RKKY phase. At the KB-QCP, the $f$ band changes character from itinerant to mainly localized, while the $c$ band remains itinerant. We elucidate its nature in detail by performing a high-resolution, real-frequency study of dynamical quantities. NRG allows us to study the quantum critical non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) regime located between $T_{FL}<T_{NFL}$. Surprisingly, self-consistency is essential to stabilize the NFL and the QCP. The Fermi-liquid (FL) scale $T_{FL}$ decreases towards and vanishes at the QCP. At $T=0$, we find the following properties. The $f$ quasiparticle (QP) weight $Z_f$ decreases continuously as the QCP is approached from either side, vanishing only at the QCP. Therefore, $Z_f$ is nonzero in both the Kondo and the RKKY phase; hence, the FL QP comprise $c$ and $f$ electrons in both phases. The Fermi surface (FS) volumes in the two phases differ. Whereas the large-FS Kondo phase has a usual two-band structure, the small-FS RKKY phase has an unexpected three-band structure. We provide a detailed analysis of quasiparticle properties of both the Kondo and the RKKY phase. The FS reconstruction is accompanied by the appearance of a Luttinger surface (LS) on which the $f$ self-energy diverges. The FS and LS volumes are related to the density by a generalized Luttinger sum rule. We interpret the small FS volume and the emergent LS as evidence for $f$-electron fractionalization in the RKKY phase. Our Hall coefficient and specific heat are in good qualitative agreement with experiment.

Abstract:In this paper we address the behavior of the superfluid transition temperature Tc in the attractive Hubbard model. The attractive Hubbard model can be regarded as the generalization of the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation BEC crossover to a lattice and, as such, may have implications for future optical lattice studies. Nevertheless, the BEC limit of the Hubbard model is very different from that of the better-studied Fermi gases, owing to the strong intersite repulsion between pairs. Here we address systematically the effects of pairing fluctuations for all filling fractions over the entire range of attractive interaction strength. A central conclusion of our work is that in a lattice, around half filling, the smooth evolution from the BCS to the BEC limits is interrupted: Tc vanishes when the system approaches the bosonic regime with increasing interaction strength. We suggest that this interruption of crossover may signal a quantum critical transition to another form of superfluid not continuously connected to a BCS-like phase. A simple variational ansatz for an alternate ground state in this more strongly coupled superfluid is presented. A generalization of the s-wave Hubbard model to d-wave pairing allows us to address issues of relevance to high-Tc superconductivity. The phase diagram representing the pairing or pseudogap onset temperature T* and Tc shows that here too one observes a vanishing of Tc when T* becomes sufficiently large. Given this predicted breakdown of the crossover, and given the striking similarity to features of the cuprate phase diagram, we suggest that future experiments on ultracold fermions in optical lattices should not be exclusively limited to the repulsive Hubbard model, but should address the attractive model in order to elucidate features of high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:Microscopic models for heavy-fermion materials often assume a local, i.e., momentum-independent, hybridization between the conduction band and the local-moment f electrons. Motivated by recent experiments, we consider situations where this neglect of momentum dependence is inappropriate, namely when the hybridization function has nodes in momentum space. We explore the thermodynamic and optical properties of the highly anisotropic heavy Fermi liquid, resulting from Kondo screening in a higher angular-momentum channel. The dichotomy in momentum space has interesting consequences: While e.g. the low-temperature specific heat is dominated by heavy quasiparticles, the electrical conductivity at intermediate temperatures is carried by unhybridized light electrons. We then discuss aspects of the competition between Kondo effect and ordering phenomena induced by inter-moment exchange: We propose that the strong momentum-space anisotropy plays a vital role in selecting competing phases. Explicit results are obtained for the interplay of unconventional hybridization with unconventional, magnetically mediated, superconductivity, utilizing variants of large-N mean-field theory. We make connections to recent experiments on CeCoIn5 and other heavy-fermion materials.
