Abstract:Following up on our previous work, we study single-element extensions of transversal valuated matroids. We show that tropical presentations of valuated matroids with a minimal set of finite entries enjoy counterparts of the properties proved by Bonin and de Mier of minimal non-valuated transversal presentations.

Abstract:A tract $F$ is an algebraic structure where multiplication is defined but addition is only partially defined. They were introduced by Baker and Bowler as a unified framework to study generalisations of matroids, including oriented and valuated matroids. A tropical extension $F[\Gamma]$ is a tract obtained by extending a tract $F$ by an ordered abelian group $\Gamma$. Key examples include the tropical hyperfield as a tropical extension of the Krasner hyperfield, and the signed tropical hyperfield as a tropical extension of the sign hyperfield. We study matroids over tropical extensions of tracts, including valuated matroids and oriented valuated matroids. We generalise the correspondence between valuated matroids and their initial matroids, showing that $M$ is an $F[\Gamma]$-matroid if and only if every initial matroid $M^u$ is an $F$-matroid. We also show analogous results for flag matroids and positroids over tropical extensions, utilising the circuit and covector descriptions we derive for $F[\Gamma]$-matroids. We conclude by studying images of linear spaces in enriched valuations, valuation maps enriched with additional data. These give rise to enriched tropical linear spaces, including signed tropical linear spaces as a key examples. As an application of our results, we prove a structure theorem for enriched tropical linear spaces, generalising the characterisation of projective tropical linear spaces of Brandt-Eur-Zhang.

Abstract:We explore several facets of tropical subrepresentations of a linear representation of a group over the tropical semifield $\mathbb{T}$. A key role in the study of tropical subrepresentations is played by two types of modules over a semiring: weakly free and quasi-free modules. We also investigate subgroups of $\text{GL}_n(K)$ for $K=\mathbb{T}$, $ \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, and automorphisms of weakly free modules and tropical prevarieties defined by tropical linear equations. As an application of our results, we provide an intrinsic description of tropical subrepresentation via certain quasi-free modules, and prove that a tropical subrepresentation is equivalent to a valuated matroidal representation.

On simple matroids with a unique minimal tropical basis

Abstract:In this note we characterize tropical bases as sets of circuits that by orthogonality determine the set of cocircuits of a simple matroid. Furthermore, we show that any circuit, which itself is closed, must be contained in any tropical basis. This yields a characterization of simple matroids which have a unique minimal tropical basis, giving a solution for a problem posted in the Matroid Union Blog.

Valuative invariants for large classes of matroids

Abstract:We study an operation in matroid theory that allows one to transition a given matroid into another with more bases via relaxing a \emph{stressed subset}. This framework provides a new combinatorial characterization of the class of split matroids. Moreover, it permits to describe an explicit matroid subdivision of a hypersimplex, which in turn can be used to write down concrete formulas for the evaluations of any valuative invariant on these matroids. This shows that evaluations on split matroids depend solely on the behavior of the invariant on tractable subclass of Schubert matroids. We address systematically the consequences of our approach for several invariants. They include the volume and Ehrhart polynomial of base polytopes, the Tutte polynomial, Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, spectrum polynomials and a generalization of these by Denham, chain polynomials and Speyer's $g$-polynomials, as well as Chow rings of matroids and their Hilbert--Poincaré series. The flexibility of this setting allows us to give a unified explanation for several recent results regarding the listed invariants; furthermore, we emphasize it as a powerful computational tool to produce explicit data and concrete examples.

Abstract:We characterize a rich class of valuated matroids, called R-minor valuated matroids that includes the indicator functions of matroids, and is closed under operations such as taking minors, duality, and induction by network. We exhibit a family of valuated matroids that are not R-minor based on sparse paving matroids. Valuated matroids are inherently related to gross substitute valuations in mathematical economics. By the same token we refute the Matroid Based Valuation Conjecture by Ostrovsky and Paes Leme (Theoretical Economics 2015) asserting that every gross substitute valuation arises from weighted matroid rank functions by repeated applications of merge and endowment operations. Our result also has implications in the context of Lorentzian polynomials: it reveals the limitations of known construction operations.

Infinite matroids in tropical differential algebra

Abstract:We consider a finite-dimensional vector space $W\subset K^E$ over an arbitrary field $K$ and an arbitrary set $E$. We show that the set $C(W)\subset 2^E$ consisting of the minimal supports of $W$ are the circuits of a matroid on $E$. In particular, we show that this matroid is cofinitary (hence, tame). When the cardinality of $K$ is large enough (with respect to the cardinality of $E$), then the set $trop(W)\subset 2^E$ consisting of all the supports of $W$ is a matroid itself. Afterwards we apply these results to tropical differential algebraic geometry and study the set of supports $trop(Sol(\Sigma))\subset (2^{\mathbb{N}^{m}})^n$ of spaces of formal power series solutions $\text{Sol}(\Sigma)$ of systems of linear differential equations $\Sigma$ in differential variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ having coefficients in the ring ${K}[\![t_1,\ldots,t_m]\!]$. If $\Sigma$ is of differential type zero, then the set $C(Sol(\Sigma))\subset (2^{\mathbb{N}^{m}})^n$ of minimal supports defines a matroid on $E=\mathbb{N}^{mn}$, and if the cardinality of $K$ is large enough, then the set of supports $trop(Sol(\Sigma))$ itself is a matroid on $E$ as well. By applying the fundamental theorem of tropical differential algebraic geometry (fttdag), we give a necessary condition under which the set of solutions $Sol(U)$ of a system $U$ of tropical linear differential equations to be a matroid. We also give a counterexample to the fttdag for systems $\Sigma$ of linear differential equations over countable fields. In this case, the set $trop(Sol(\Sigma))$ may not form a matroid.

A Note on Extension Properties and Representations of Matroids

Abstract:We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

Tropical vector bundles and matroids

Abstract:We introduce a notion of tropical vector bundle on a tropical toric variety which is a tropical analogue of a torus equivariant vector bundle on a toric variety. Alternatively it can be called a toric matroid bundle. We define equivariant $K$-theory and characteristic classes of these bundles. As a particular case, we show that any matroid comes with tautological tropical toric vector bundles over the permutahedral toric variety and the corresponding equivariant $K$-classes and Chern classes recover the tautological classes of matroids constructed in the recent work of Berger-Eur-Spink-Tseng. In analogy with toric vector bundles, we define sheaf of sections and Euler characteristic as well as positivity notions such as global generation, ampleness and nefness for tropical toric vector bundles. Moreover, we prove a vanishing of higher cohomologies result. Finally, we study the splitting of our tropical toric vector bundles and, in particular, an analogue of Grothendieck's theorem on splitting of vector bundles on projective line.

Abstract:Affine Bruhat--Tits buildings are geometric spaces extracting the combinatorics of algebraic groups. The building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ parametrizes flags of subspaces/lattices in or, equivalently, norms on a fixed finite-dimensional vector space, up to homothety. It has first been studied by Goldman and Iwahori as a piecewise-linear analogue of symmetric spaces. The space of seminorms compactifies the space of norms and admits a natural surjective restriction map from the Berkovich analytification of projective space that factors the natural tropicalization map. Inspired by Payne's result that the analytification is the limit of all tropicalizations, we show that the space of seminorms is the limit of all tropicalized linear embeddings $\iota\colon\mathbb{P}^r\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove a faithful tropicalization result for compactified linear spaces. The space of seminorms is in fact the tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable valuated matroid.

Optimizing Extension Techniques for Discovering Non-Algebraic Matroids

Abstract:In this work, we revisit some combinatorial and information-theoretic extension techniques for detecting non-algebraic matroids. These are the Dress-Lovász and Ahlswede-Körner extension properties. We provide optimizations of these techniques to reduce their computational complexity, finding new non-algebraic matroids on 9 and 10 points. In addition, we use the Ahlswede-Körner extension property to find better lower bounds on the information ratio of secret sharing schemes for ports of non-algebraic matroids.

Abstract:Thin sums matroids were introduced to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. We give a new criterion for testing when the thin sums construction gives a matroid. We show that thin sums matroids over thin families are precisely the duals of representable matroids (those arising from vector spaces). We also show that the class of tame thin sums matroids is closed under duality and under taking minors, by giving a new characterisation of the matroids in this class. Finally, we show that all the matroids naturally associated to an infinite graph are tame thin sums matroids.

Abstract:We associate a matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ to a harmonic double cover $\pi:\widetilde{\Gamma}\to \Gamma$ of metric graphs. The matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ is a geometric interpretation of Zaslavsky's signed graphic matroid. We show that the principalization $\mathrm{Prym}_p(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ of the tropical Prym variety of the double cover can be reconstructed from $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$, equipped with certain additional decorations. We describe the simplification of the matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ and show that the Prym variety does not change under simplification.

Abstract:The expansion axiom of matroids requires only the existence of some kind of independent sets, not the uniqueness of them. This causes that the base families of some matroids can be reduced while the unions of the base families of these matroids remain unchanged. In this paper, we define unique expansion matroids in which the expansion axiom has some extent uniqueness; we define union minimal matroids in which the base families have some extent minimality. Some properties of them and the relationship between them are studied. First, we propose the concepts of secondary base and forming base family. Secondly, we propose the concept of unique expansion matroid, and prove that a matroid is a unique expansion matroid if and only if its forming base family is a partition. Thirdly, we propose the concept of union minimal matroid, and prove that unique expansion matroids are union minimal matroids. Finally, we extend the concept of unique expansion matroid to unique exchange matroid and prove that both unique expansion matroids and their dual matroids are unique exchange matroids.

Abstract:We give a new proof of a theorem of Montejano and Karasev regarding $k$-dimensional transversals to small families of convex sets. While their proof uses technical algebraic and topological tools, our proof is a simple application of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. Additionally, in certain cases our result is stronger than the Montejano-Karasev theorem.

Abstract:In a previous work, we gave a construction of (not necessarily realizable) oriented matroids from a triangulation of a product of two simplices. In this follow-up paper, we use a variant of Viro's patchworking to derive a topological representation of the oriented matroid directly from the polyhedral structure of the triangulation, hence finding a combinatorial manifestation of patchworking besides tropical algebraic geometry. We achieve this by rephrasing the patchworking procedure as a controlled cell merging process, guided by the structure of tropical oriented matroids. A key insight is a new promising technique to show that the final cell complex is regular.

Tropical Split Jacobians of genus 2 and optimal covers

Abstract:We explore connections between the category of tropical abelian varieties (tav), $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{A}$, and the the category of tropical curves, $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{C}$, first in a broader context and then specifically by studying the phenomenon of tropical split Jacobians. Jacobians of genus $2$ curves are two-dimensional tav and as such more complicated than their one-dimensional cousins. Whenever $\Gamma$, however, is a covering of an elliptic curve, it so happens that $Jac(\Gamma)$ splits into simpler objects, the direct sum of elliptic curves. This relation is pathological in essentially two ways, the splitting of $Jac(\Gamma)$ is not unique, and it is a priori not clear how to compute it. Similar to algebraic geometry, optimal coverings offer a remedy for both: They resolve indeterminacy as they provide us with a canonical choice. They resolve indeterminability as they provide us with an algorithmic approach. Our methods build on theory developed by Len, Mikhalkin, Röhrle, Ulirsch, Zakharov, Zharkov and many more. In accordance with this heritage, we want to put forth tropical geometry as a setting in which we can see abstraction at work. This means pairing "abstract machinery" with a constructive/algorithmic approach.

Abstract:We prove that the proper amalgam of matroids $M_1$ and $M_2$ along their common restriction $N$ exists if and only if the tropical fibre product of Bergman fans ${B(M_1) \times_{B(N)} B(M_2)}$ is positive. We introduce tropical correspondences between Bergman fans as tropical subcycles in their product, similar to correspondences in algebraic geometry, and define a "graph correspondence" of the map of lattices. We prove that graph construction is a functor for the "covering" maps of lattices, exploiting a generalization of Bergman fan which we call a "Flag fan".

An activities expansion of the transition polynomial of a multimatroid

Abstract:The weighted transition polynomial of a multimatroid is a generalization of the Tutte polynomial. By defining the activity of a skew class with respect to a basis in a multimatroid, we obtain an activities expansion for the weighted transition polynomial. We also decompose the set of all transversals of a multimatroid as a union of subsets of transversals. Each term in the decomposition has the structure of a boolean lattice, and each transversal belongs to a number of terms depending only on the sizes of some of its skew classes. Further expressions for the transition polynomial of a multimatroid are obtained via an equivalence relation on its bases and by extending Kochol's theory of compatible sets. We apply our multimatroid results to obtain a result of Morse about the transition polynomial of a delta-matroid and get a partition of the boolean lattice of subsets of elements of a delta-matroid determined by the feasible sets. Finally, we describe how multimatroids arise from graphs embedded in surfaces and apply our results to obtain an activities expansion for the topological transition polynomial. Our work extends results for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.

On a conjecture of Gross, Mansour and Tucker for $Δ$-matroids

Abstract:Gross, Mansour, and Tucker introduced the partial-duality polynomial of a ribbon graph [Distributions, European J. Combin. 86, 1--20, 2020], the generating function enumerating partial duals by the Euler genus. Chmutov and Vignes-Tourneret wondered if this polynomial and its conjectured properties would hold for general delta-matroids, which are combinatorial abstractions of ribbon graphs. Yan and Jin contributed to this inquiry by identifying a subset of delta-matroids-specifically, even normal binary ones-whose twist polynomials are characterized by a singular term. Building upon this foundation, the current paper expands the scope of the investigation to encompass even non-binary delta-matroids, revealing that none of them have width-changing twists.
