Abstract:A connection between Galois points of an algebraic curve and those of a quotient curve is presented; in particular, the notion of a descendant of algebraic curves admitting two Galois points is introduced. It is shown that all descendants of a Fermat curve are Fermat curves; in particular, a Fermat curve does not have a descendant if and only if the degree is a prime.

Abstract:For a variety over a global field, one can consider subsets of the set of adelic points of the variety cut out by finite abelian descent or Brauer-Manin obstructions. Given a Galois extension of the ground field one can consider similar sets over the extension and take Galois invariants. In this paper, we study under which circumstances the Galois invariants recover the obstruction sets over the ground field. As an application of our results, we study finite abelian descent and Brauer-Manin obstructions for isotrivial curves over function fields and extend results obtained by the first and last authors for constant curves to the isotrivial case.

Abstract:A new algebraic Cayley graph is constructed using finite fields. It provides a more flexible source of expander graphs. Its connectedness, the number of connected components, and diameter bound are studied via Weil's estimate for character sums. Furthermore, we study the algorithmic problem of computing the number of connected components and establish a link to the integer factorization problem.

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic [Formula: see text], for example, over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal [Formula: see text]-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.

Abstract:The inverse Galois problem asks whether any finite group can be realised as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals. This problem and its refinements have stimulated a large amount of research in number theory and algebraic geometry in the past century, ranging from Noether's problem (letting X denote the quotient of the affine space by a finite group acting linearly, when is X rational?) to the rigidity method (if X is not rational, does it at least contain interesting rational curves?) and to the arithmetic of unirational varieties (if all else fails, does X at least contain interesting rational points?). The goal of the present notes, which formed the basis for three lectures given at the Park City Mathematics Institute in August 2022, is to provide an introduction to these topics.

Normal points on Artin-Schreier curves over finite fields

Abstract:In 2022, S.D. Cohen and the two authors introduced and studied the concept of $(r, n)$-freeness on finite cyclic groups $G$ for suitable integers $r, n$, which is an arithmetic way of capturing elements of special forms that lie in the subgroups of $G$. Combining this machinery with some character sum techniques, they explored the existence of points $(x_0, y_0)$ on affine curves $y^n=f(x)$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb F$ whose coordinates are generators of the multiplicative cyclic group $\mathbb F^*$. In this paper we develop the natural additive counterpart of this work for finite fields. Namely, any finite extension $\mathbb E$ of a finite field $\mathbb F$ with $Q$ elements is a cyclic $\mathbb F[x]$-module induced by the Frobenius automorphism $\alpha\mapsto \alpha^{Q}$, and any generator of this module is said to be a normal element over $\mathbb F$. We introduce and study the concept of $(f, g)$-freeness on this module structure for suitable polynomials $f, g\in \mathbb F[x]$. As a main application of the machinery developed in this paper, we study the existence of $\mathbb F_{p^n}$-rational points in the Artin-Schreier curve $\mathfrak A_f : y^p-y=f(x)$ whose coordinates are normal over the prime field $\mathbb F_p$ and establish concrete results.

Cyclic Cubic Points on Higher Genus Curves

Abstract:The distribution of degree $d$ points on curves is well understood, especially for low degrees. We refine this study to include information on the Galois group in the simplest interesting case: $d = 3$. For curves of genus at least 5, we show cubic points with Galois group $C_3$ arise from well-structured morphisms, along with providing computable tests for the existence of such morphisms. We prove the same for curves of lower genus under some geometric or arithmetic assumptions.

Abstract:We study the étale fundamental group of a singular reduced connected curve defined over an algebraically closed field of an arbitrary prime characteristic. It is shown that when the curve is projective, the étale fundamental group is a free product of the étale fundamental group of its normalization with a free finitely generated profinite group whose rank is well determined. A similar result is established for the tame fundamental groups of seminormal affine curves. In the affine case, we provide an Abhyankar-type complete group theoretic classification on which finite groups occur as the Galois groups for Galois étale connected covers over (singular) affine curves. An analogue of the Inertia Conjecture is also posed for certain singular curves.

Abstract:Bliem and Kousidis recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.

Abstract:We provide a geometric condition which determines whether or not every point on the metric boundary of a graph with the standard path metric is a Busemann point, that is it is the limit point of a geodesic ray. We apply this and a related condition to investigate the structure of the metric boundary of Cayley graphs. We show that every metric boundary point of the Cayley graph of a finitely generated Abelian group is a Busemann point, but groups such as the braid group and the discrete Heisenberg group have boundary points of the Cayley graph which are not Busemann points when equipped with their usual generators.

Galois order realization of noncommutative type $D$ Kleinian singularities

Abstract:Galois orders, introduced by Futorny and Ovsienko, is a class of noncommutative algebras that includes generalized Weyl algebras, the enveloping algebra of the general linear Lie algebra and many others. We prove that the noncommutative Kleinian singularities of type $D$ can be realized as principal Galois orders. Our starting point is an embedding theorem due to Boddington. We also compute explicit generators for the corresponding (Morita equivalent) flag order, as a subalgebra of the nil-Hecke algebra of type $A_1^{(1)}$. Lastly, we compute structure constants for Harish-Chandra modules of local distributions and give a visual description of their structure from which subquotients are easily obtained.

Integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental group

Abstract:We study integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental groups. More precisely, for a number field $F$ and $X/F$ a smooth projective variety, we prove that for any geometrically Galois cover $\varphi\colon Y \to X$ of degree at least $2\dim(X)^2$, there exists an ample line bundle $\mathscr{L}$ on $Y$ such that for a general member $D$ of the complete linear system $|\mathscr{L}|$, $D$ is geometrically irreducible and any set of $\varphi(D)$-integral points on $X$ is finite. We apply this result to varieties with infinite étale fundamental group to give new examples of irreducible, ample divisors on varieties for which finiteness of integral points is provable.

Abstract:We consider three isogeny invariants of abelian varieties over finite fields: the Galois group, Newton polygon, and the angle rank. Motivated by work of Dupuy, Kedlaya, and Zureick-Brown, we define a new invariant called the weighted permutation representation which encompasses all three of these invariants and use it to study the subtle relationships between them. We use this permutation representation to classify the triples of invariants that occur for abelian surfaces and simple abelian threefolds.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, and let $f\in K(z)$ be rational function. The preimages of a point $x_0\in P^1(K)$ under iterates of $f$ have a natural tree structure. As a result, the Galois group of the resulting field extension of $K$ naturally embeds into the automorphism group of this tree. In unpublished work from 2013, Pink described a certain proper subgroup $M_{\ell}$ that this so-called arboreal Galois group $G_{\infty}$ must lie in if $f$ is quadratic and its two critical points collide at the $\ell$-th iteration. After presenting a new description of $M_{\ell}$ and a new proof of Pink's theorem, we state and prove necessary and sufficient conditions for $G_{\infty}$ to be the full group $M_{\ell}$.
