Abstract:The minimal faithful permutation degree $\mu(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the least integer $n$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$. If $G$ has a normal subgroup $N$ such that $\mu(G/N) > \mu(G)$, then $G$ is exceptional. We prove that the proportion of exceptional groups of order $p^6$ for primes $p \geq 5$ is asymptotically 0. We identify $(11p+107)/2$ such groups and conjecture that there are no others.

Abstract:Given positive integers $p$ and $m$, where $p$ is assumed to be an odd prime, we determine the automorphism groups of $p$-groups $J$, $H$, and $K$ of orders $p^{7m}$, $p^{6m}$, and $p^{5m}$, and nilpotency classes 5, 4, and 3, respectively, all of which arise naturally from the Macdonald group $\langle x,y\,|\, x^{[x,y]}=x^{1+p^m\ell},\, y^{[y,x]}=y^{1+p^m\ell}\rangle$, where $\ell\in{\mathbf Z}$ is relatively prime to $p$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. We construct a $p$-group $P$ of nilpotency class two, rank seven and exponent $p$, such that $\mathrm{Aut}(P)$ induces $N_{\mathrm{GL}(7,p)}(G_2(p)) = Z(\mathrm{GL}(7,p)) G_2(p)$ on the Frattini quotient $P/\Phi(P)$. The constructed group $P$ is the smallest $p$-group with these properties, having order $p^{14}$, and when $p = 3$, our construction gives two nonisomorphic $p$-groups. To show that $P$ satisfies the specified properties, we study the action of $G_2(q)$ on the octonion algebra over $\mathbb{F}_q$, for each power $q$ of $p$, and explore the reducibility of the exterior square of each irreducible seven-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_q[G_2(q)]$-module.

Abstract:We study finite groups $G$ having a normal subgroup $H$ and $D \subset G \setminus H, D \cap D^{-1}=\emptyset,$ such that the multiset $\{ xy^{-1}:x,y \in D\}$ has every non-identity element occur the same number of times (such a $D$ is called a {\it DRAD difference set}). We show that there are no such groups of order $4p^2$, where $p$ is an odd prime.

Abstract:A further step towards a possible classification of $p$-groups by coclass was made by Eick & Leedham-Green in 2007. They gave a constructive proof of the ultimate periodicity of shaved coclass graphs. By giving a counterexample we show that there is a mistake in their proof, and we fill this gap.

Abstract:If $p$ is an odd prime, then we prove that $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid p\ \e(G)$ for $p$ groups of class 7. We prove the same for $p$ groups of class at most $p+1$ with $\e(Z(G))=p$. We also prove Schurs conjecture if $\e(G/Z(G))$ is $2,3$ or $6$. Furthermore we prove that if $G$ is a solvable group of derived length $d$ and $\e(G)=p$, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^{d-1}$. We also show that if $G$ is a finite $2$ or $3$ generator group of exponent 5, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^2$.

Abstract:There are several results in the literature concerning $p$-groups $G$ with a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$ due to Thompson, Mann and others. Following an idea of Sambale we obtain bounds for the number of generators etc. of a $2$-group $G$ in terms of $k$, which were previously known only for $p>2$. We also prove a theorem that is new even for odd primes. Namely, we show that if $G$ has a maximal elementary abelian normal subgroup of rank $k$, then for any abelian subgroup $A$ the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(A)$ can be generated by $2k$ elements ($3k$ when $p=2$). The proof of this rests upon the following result of independent interest: If $V$ is an $n$-dimensional vector space, then any commutative subalgebra of End$(V)$ contains a zero algebra of codimension at most $n$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. For nontrivial proper subsets $A,B$ of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of cardinality $s,t$, respectively, we count the number $r(A,B,B)$ of additive triples, namely elements of the form $(a, b, a+b)$ in $A \times B \times B$. For given $s,t$, what is the spectrum of possible values for $r(A,B,B)$? In the special case $A=B$, the additive triple is called a Schur triple. Various authors have given bounds on the number $r(A,A,A)$ of Schur triples, and shown that the lower and upper bound can each be attained by a set $A$ that is an interval of $s$ consecutive elements of $\mathbb{Z}_p$. However, there are values of $p,s$ for which not every value between the lower and upper bounds is attainable. We consider here the general case where $A,B$ can be distinct. We use Pollard's generalization of the Cauchy-Davenport Theorem to derive bounds on the number $r(A,B,B)$ of additive triples. In contrast to the case $A=B$, we show that every value of $r(A,B,B)$ from the lower bound to the upper bound is attainable: each such value can be attained when $B$ is an interval of $t$ consecutive elements of $\mathbb{Z}_p$.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a given positive odd integer and $p$ an odd prime. In this paper, we shall give a sufficient condition when a prime $p$ divides the order of the groups $K_{2k}(\mathbb{Z}[\zeta_m+\zeta_m^{-1}])$ and $K_{2k}(\mathbb{Z}[\zeta_m])$, where $\zeta_m$ is a primitive $m$th root of unity. When $F$ is a $p$-extension contained in $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_l)$ for some prime $l$, we also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the order of $K_{2(p-2)}(\mathcal{O}_F)$ to be divisible by $p$. This generalizes a previous result of Browkin which in turn has applications towards establishing the existence of infinitely many cyclic extensions of degree $p$ which are $(p, p-1)$-rational.

Abstract:We give a simple matrix-based proof of congruence equations modulo a prime $p$ involving sums of binomial coefficients appearing in Pascal's triangle. These equations can be used to construct some groups of exponent $p^n$. These groups, as well as others of exponent $p^{n+1}$, explain why $p=2$ is not really an exceptional prime in relation to the Heisenberg group over the field with $p$ elements.

Abstract:Let $A$ be a multiplicative subgroup of $\mathbb Z_p^*$. Define the $k$-fold sumset of $A$ to be $kA=\{x_1+\dots+x_k:x_i \in A,1\leq i\leq k\}$. We show that $6A\supseteq \mathbb Z_p^*$ for $|A| > p^{\frac {11}{23} +\epsilon}$. In addition, we extend a result of Shkredov to show that $|2A|\gg |A|^{\frac 85-\epsilon}$ for $|A|\ll p^{\frac 59}$.

Abstract:Denniston constructed partial difference sets (PDSs) with the parameters $(2^{3m}, (2^{m+r} - 2^m + 2^r)(2^m-1), 2^m-2^r+(2^{m+r}-2^m+2^r)(2^r-2), (2^{m+r}-2^m+2^r)(2^r-1))$ in elementary abelian groups of order $2^{3m}$ for all $m \geq 2, 1 \leq r < m$. These correspond to maximal arcs in Desarguesian projective planes of even order. In this paper, we show that - although maximal arcs do not exist in Desarguesian projective planes of odd order - PDSs with the Denniston parameters $(p^{3m}, (p^{m+r} - p^m + p^r)(p^m-1), p^m-p^r+(p^{m+r}-p^m+p^r)(p^r-2), (p^{m+r}-p^m+p^r)(p^r-1))$ exist in all elementary abelian groups of order $p^{3m}$ for all $m \geq 2, r \in \{1, m-1\}$ where $p$ is an odd prime, and present a construction. Our approach uses PDSs formed as unions of cyclotomic classes.

Abstract:We give a new computer-assisted proof of the classification of maximal subgroups of the simple group ${}^2E_6(2)$ and its extensions by any subgroup of the outer automorphism group $S_3$. This is not a new result, but no earlier proof exists in the literature. A large part of the proof consists of a computational analysis of subgroups generated by an element of order 2 and an element of order 3. This method can be effectively automated, and via statistical analysis also provides a sanity check on results that may have been obtained by delicate theoretical arguments.

Abstract:We conduct an in-depth investigation into the structure of the Bogomolov multiplier for groups of order p 7 ( p > 2) and exponent p . We present a comprehensive classification of these groups, identifying those with nontrivial Bogomolov multipliers and distinguishing them from groups with trivial multipliers. Our analysis not only clarifies the conditions under which the Bogomolov multiplier is nontrivial but also refines existing computational methods, enhancing the process of determining these multipliers for the specified class of p -groups.
