Abstract:As one type of incidence theory, the geometry of pentagram map seems quite classical at first. However, this is an excellent example of such a classical idea developed into a marvellous insight by some modern approach. We introduce an alternative approach based on the setting of the ordinary Euclidean geometry.

Abstract:The pentagram map is a discrete dynamical system on planar polygons. By definition, the image of a polygon $P$ under the pentagram map is the polygon $P'$ whose vertices are the intersection points of consecutive shortest diagonals of $P$. The pentagram map was introduced by R. Schwartz in 1992, and is now one of the most renowned discrete integrable systems. Several authors proposed generalizations of the pentagram map to other geometries, in particular to Grassmannians, where the role of points and lines is played by higher-dimensional subspaces, as well to skewer geometry, where both points and lines are affine lines in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. In the present paper, we develop a common framework for these kinds of generalizations. Specifically, we show that those maps can be viewed as pentagram maps in the projective plane over an appropriate ring. In general, those rings need not be division rings or commutative. We show that the Grassmannian pentagram map corresponds to the ring of matrices, while the skewer map is the pentagram map over the ring of dual numbers. Furthermore, we prove that the pentagram map remains integrable for any stably finite ground ring $R$.

Abstract:In this paper, a family of novel generalizations of the (dented) pentagram map are proposed on the space of coupled polygons. Their geometry and integrability are described together with some explicit examples. In particular, we find that these maps are related to refactorization maps in the Poisson–Lie group of pseudo-difference operators associated with pairs of non-disjoint progressions , which resolves an open question proposed by Izosimov. Furthermore, it is shown that these maps can be associated with a class of bi-orthogonal polynomials, which generalize the corresponding result for the classical Laurent bi-orthogonal polynomials.

Pentagram Rigidity for Centrally Symmetric Octagons

Abstract:In this paper I will establish a special case of a conjecture that intertwines the deep diagonal pentagram maps and Poncelet polygons. The special case is that of the 3-diagonal map acting on affine equivalence classes of centrally symmetric octagons. This is the simplest case that goes beyond an analysis of elliptic curves. The proof involves establishing that the map is Arnold-Liouville integrable in this case, and then exploring the Lagrangian surface foliation in detail.

Abstract:The pentagram map is a discrete integrable system first introduced by Schwartz in 1992. It was proved to be intregable by Schwartz, Ovsienko, and Tabachnikov in 2010. Gekhtman, Shapiro, and Vainshtein studied Poisson geometry associated to certain networks embedded in a disc or annulus, and its relation to cluster algebras. Later, Gekhtman et al. and Tabachnikov reinterpreted the pentagram map in terms of these networks, and used the associated Poisson structures to give a new proof of integrability. In 2011, Mari Beffa and Felipe introduced a generalization of the pentagram map to certain Grassmannians, and proved it was integrable. We reinterpret this Grassmann pentagram map in terms of noncommutative algebra, in particular the double brackets of Van den bergh, and generalize the approach of Gekhtman et al. to establish a noncommutative version of integrability.

On singularity confinement for the pentagram map

Abstract:The pentagram map, introduced by R. Schwartz, is a birational map on the configuration space of polygons in the projective plane. We study the singularities of the iterates of the pentagram map. We show that a "typical" singularity disappears after a finite number of iterations, a confinement phenomenon first discovered by Schwartz. We provide a method to bypass such a singular patch by directly constructing the first subsequent iterate that is well-defined on the singular locus under consideration. The key ingredient of this construction is the notion of a decorated (twisted) polygon, and the extension of the pentagram map to the corresponding decorated configuration space.

Abstract:We classify rational solutions of a specific type of the set theoretical version of the pentagon equation. That is, we find all quadrirational maps where are two rational functions on two arguments, that serve as solutions of the pentagon equation. Furthermore, provided a pentagon map that admits a partial inverse, we obtain genuine entwining pentagon set theoretical solutions. Finally, we show how to obtain Yang-Baxter maps from entwining pentagon maps.

Generalized pentagram maps via Q-nets and refactorization mappings

Abstract:We introduce a family of generalizations of the pentagram maps related to $Q$-nets. A specific example is considered, and we find the map can be treated as a refactorization mapping in the Poisson-Lie group of pseudo-difference operators. This method was firstly proposed by Izosimov, and we generalize it to fit our needs. Using this description, we obtain the corresponding Lax form with a spectral parameter and invariant Poisson brackets. Finally, we consider the reduction to $B$-nets and the discrete BKP equation, offering a geometric explanation for the discrete-time Toda equation of BKP type proposed by Hirota.

Abstract:Every body knows that identical regular triangles or squares can tile the whole plane. Many people know that identical regular hexagons can tile the plane properly as well. In fact, even the bees know and use this fact! Is there any other convex domain which can tile the Euclidean plane? Yes, there is a long list of them! To find the list and to show the completeness of the list is a unique drama in mathematics, which has lasted for more than one century and the completeness of the list has been mistakenly announced not only once! Up to now, the list consists of triangles, quadrilaterals, three types of hexagons, and fifteen types of pentagons. In 2017, Michael Rao announced a computer proof for the completeness of the list. Meanwhile, Qi Yang and Chuanming Zong made a series of unexpected discoveries in multiple tilings in the Euclidean plane. For examples, besides parallelograms and centrally symmetric hexagons, there is no other convex domain which can form any two-, three- or four-fold translative tiling in the plane; there are only two types of octagons and one type of decagons which can form five-fold translative tilings.

Abstract:We show that various classical theorems of real/complex linear incidence geometry, such as the theorems of Pappus, Desargues, Möbius, and so on, can be interpreted as special cases of a single "master theorem" that involves an arbitrary tiling of a closed oriented surface by quadrilateral tiles. This yields a general mechanism for producing new incidence theorems and generalizing the known ones.

Abstract:The article presents a new approach to euclidean plane geometry based on projective geometric algebra (PGA). It is designed for anyone with an interest in plane geometry, or who wishes to familiarize themselves with PGA. After a brief review of PGA, the article focuses on P(R2,0,1∗)$$\mathbf {P}(\mathbb {R}^*_{2,0,1}) $$, the PGA for euclidean plane geometry. It first explores the geometric product involving pairs and triples of basic elements (points and lines), establishing a wealth of fundamental metric and non-metric properties. It then applies the algebra to a variety of familiar topics in plane euclidean geometry and shows that it compares favorably with other approaches in regard to completeness, compactness, practicality, and elegance. The seamless integration of euclidean and ideal (or “infinite”) elements forms an essential and novel feature of the treatment. Numerous figures accompany the text. For readers with the requisite mathematical background, a self-contained coordinate-free introduction to the algebra is provided in an appendix.

Abstract:We study the $(k+1,k)$ diagonal map for $k=2,3,4,...$. We call this map $\Delta_k$. The map $\Delta_1$ is the pentagram map and $\Delta_k$ is a generalization. $\Delta_k$ does not preserve convexity, but we prove that $\Delta_k$ preserves a subset $B_k$ of certain star-shaped polygons which we call $k$-birds. The action of $\Delta_k$ on $B_k$ seems similar to the action of $\Delta_1$ on the space of convex polygons. We show that some classic geometric results about $\Delta_1$ generalize to this setting.

Abstract:The main subject of the paper is the pentagon relation. This relation can be expressed in different ways. We start with the natural geometric form of the pentagon relation. Then we express it in algebraic form as a family of equations with a set of linear maps as variables. Next, we derive several equivalent forms of the algebraic pentagon relation. These forms can be expressed using the classical notion of 6j-symbols. Finally, we show how to extract a solution of the pentagon relation from any modular category.
