Abstract:Computing the intersection between two parametric surfaces (SSI) is one of the most fundamental problems in geometric and solid modeling. Maintaining the SSI topology is critical to its computation robustness. We propose a topology-driven hybrid symbolic-numeric framework to approximate rational parametric surface-surface intersection (SSI) based on a concept of interval algebraic topology analysis (IATA), which configures within a 4D interval box the SSI topology. We map the SSI topology to an algebraic system's solutions within the framework, classify and enumerate all topological cases as a mixture of four fundamental cases (or their specific sub-cases). Various complicated topological situations are covered, such as cusp points or curves, tangent points (isolated or not) or curves, tiny loops, self-intersections, or their mixtures. The theoretical formulation is also implemented numerically using advanced real solution isolation techniques, and computed within a topology-driven framework which maximally utilizes the advantages of the topology maintenance of algebraic analysis, the robustness of iterative subdivision, and the efficiency of forward marching. The approach demonstrates improved robustness under benchmark topological cases when compared with available open-source and commercial solutions, including IRIT, SISL, and Parasolid.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Oberwolfach Reports

Abstract:The Workshop \\emph{Komplexe algebraische Geometrie}, organized by Fabrizio Catanese (Bayreuth), Yujiro Kawamata (Tokyo), Gang Tian (Princeton), and Eckart Vieh\\-weg (Essen), drew together 50 participants. There were several young PhD students and other PostDocs in their 20's and early 30's, together with established leaders of the fields related to the thematic title of the workshop. There were 23 talks, each lasting 55 minutes or one hour, and each followed by a lively 10 minutes discussion. As usual at an Oberwolfach Meeting, the mathematical discussions continued outside the lecture room throughout the day and the night. The Conference fully fulfilled its purported aim, of setting in contact mathematicians with different specializations and non uniform background, of presenting new fashionable topics alongside with new insights on long standing classical open problems, and also cross-fertilizations with other research topics as arithmetic and physics. For the latter, cf. the talk by Bernd Siebert on the new approach to Mirror Symmetry through logarithmic geometry and toric affine Calabi Yau varieties and the one by van Straten on quantization of completely integrable Hamiltonian Systems. For the former, cf. the talks by Winkelmann on integral sets and by McQuillan on the Bloch principle. A central role was occupied by the new results around the Hodge conjecture presented by Voisin, and the new results by Hacon, M\\textsuperscript{c}Kernan et al which give an essential step towards the final solution of the Minimal Model Program, and were presented here by M\\textsuperscript{c}Kernan with a proposed approach to the Sarkisov program. There were many expositions dealing with several classical problems and classical and modern theories. It would take too long to dwell on each of the outstanding contributions presented at the Conference. For some topics there were several interrelated talks, for instance we could mention the following classical themes: \\begin{enumerate} \\item Abelian Varieties, Jacobian and Prym Varieties and their Moduli spaces (van der Geer, Farkas, Lange, Hulek) \\item Hodge Theory and Variation of Hodge structures (Voisin, M\\"oller, Barja) \\item Fibred varieties (Oguiso, Moeller) \\item Algebraic Surfaces (Mukai, Pardini) \\item Fundamental groups and algebraic fundamental groups (Esnault, Bauer, Pardini). \\end{enumerate} There were also expositions on many other beautiful topics: \\begin{enumerate} \\item Moduli spaces of sheaves on higher dimensional varieties (Lehn) \\item Deformations of special complex maifolds (Rollenske) \\item Varieties of power sums (Takagi) \\item Ball quotients (M\\"uller-Stach) \\item Stacks and Azumaya algebras (Schr\\"oer) \\item nefness and vector bundles (Peternell) \\end{enumerate} The variety of striking results and the very interesting and challenging proposals made the participation in the workshop rather strenuous but certainly highly rewarding. We hope that the quality of the expositions in these abstracts will make them quite useful to the mathematical community.

Abstract:A classical theorem due to Mattila (see \cite{Mat84}; see also \cite{M95}, Chapter 13) says that if $A,B \subset {\Bbb R}^d$ of Hausdorff dimension $s_A, s_B$, respectively, with $s_A+s_B \ge d$, $s_B>\frac{d+1}{2}$ and $dim_{\mathcal H}(A \times B)=s_A+s_B\ge d$, then $$ dim_{\mathcal H}(A \cap (z+B)) \leq s_A+s_B-d$$ for almost every $z \in {\Bbb R}^d$, in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In this paper, we replace the Hausdorff dimension on the left hand side of the first inequality above by the upper Minkowski dimension, replace the Lebesgue measure of the set of translates by a Hausdorff measure on a set of sufficiently large dimension and replace the translation and rotation group by a more general variable coefficient family of transformations. Interesting arithmetic issues arise in the consideration of sharpness examples. These results are partly motivated by those in \cite{EIT11} and \cite{IJL10} where in the former the classical regular value theorem from differential geometry was investigated in a fractal setting and in the latter discrete incidence theory is explored from an analytic standpoint. Fourier Integral Operator bounds and other techniques of harmonic analysis play a crucial role in our investigation. We also consider, in the spirit of the Furstenberg conjecture, inverse problems for intersections by asking how small a dimension of a set can be given that the dimension of its intersections with a suitably well-curved family of manifolds is bounded from below by a given threshold. Finally, we shall discuss applications of our estimates to the problem of estimating the number of solutions of systems of diophantine equations over integers.

Abstract:In Gauthier, Manolaki, and Nestoridis (2021, Advances in Mathematics 381, 107649), in order to correct a false Mergelyan-type statement given in Gamelin and Garnett (1969, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 143, 187–200) on uniform approximation on compact sets K in , the authors introduced a natural function algebra which is smaller than the classical one . In the present paper, we investigate when these two algebras coincide and compare them with the classes of all plausibly approximable functions by polynomials or rational functions or functions holomorphic on open sets containing the compact set K . Finally, we introduce a notion of O -hull of K and strengthen known results.

Abstract:The design and implementation of parallel algorithms is a fundamental task in computer algebra. Combining the computer algebra system Singular and the workflow management system GPI-Space, we have developed an infrastructure for massively parallel computations in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. In this note, we give an overview on the current capabilities of this framework by looking into three sample applications: determining smoothness of algebraic varieties, computing GIT-fans in geometric invariant theory, and determining tropicalizations. These applications employ algorithmic methods originating from commutative algebra, sheaf structures on manifolds, local geometry, convex geometry, group theory, and combinatorics, illustrating the potential of the framework in further problems in computer algebra.

Abstract:This text is the write-up of a talk at the Bellairs Workshop in Number Theory on Tropical and Non-Archimedean Geometry that took place at the Bellairs Research Institute, Barbados, in May 2011. The goal of this text is to present recent work by in Diophantine Geometry over function fields due to Gubler and Yamaki, where analytic geometry in the sense of Berkovich plays a significant place. I also give an introduction to basic concepts and notions on Diophantine Geometry, such as heights, the Manin-Mumford conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and its proof by Ullmo and Zhang.

Abstract:This is a summary of the talk I gave in response to the request of the organizers of this workshop to survey the algebro-geometric aspects of the mapping class group. I am grateful to them for asking me to do so, as this led me to revisit (and to rethink) a few these connections. But the reader be warned that although I have tried to tailor this survey to an audience of geometers of a non-algebraic denomination, it remained one au goût du jour and consisted in the end more of asking questions than of stating results.

Abstract:The field of numerical algebraic geometry consists of algorithms for numerically solving systems of polynomial equations. When the system is exact, such as having rational coefficients, the solution set is well-defined. However, for a member of a parameterized family of polynomial systems where the parameter values may be measured with imprecision or arise from prior numerical computations, uncertainty may arise in the structure of the solution set, including the number of isolated solutions, the existence of higher dimensional solution components, and the number of irreducible components along with their multiplicities. The loci where these structures change form a stratification of exceptional algebraic sets in the space of parameters. We describe methodologies for making the interpretation of numerical results more robust by searching for nearby parameter values on an exceptional set. We demonstrate these techniques on several illustrative examples and then treat several more substantial problems arising from the kinematics of mechanisms and robots.

From Asymptotic Symmetries to the Corner Proposal

Abstract:These notes are a transcript of lectures given by the author in the XVIII Modave summer school in mathematical physics. The introduction is devoted to a detailed review of the literature on asymptotic symmetries, flat holography, and the corner proposal. It covers much more material than needed, for it is meant as a lamppost to help the reader in navigating the vast existing literature. The notes then consist of three main parts. The first is devoted to Noether's theorems and their underlying framework, the covariant phase space formalism, with special focus on gauge theories. The surface-charges algebra is shown to projectively represent the asymptotic symmetry algebra. Issues arising in the gravitational case, such as conservation, finiteness, and integrability, are addressed. In the second part, we introduce the geometric concept of corners, and show the existence of a universal asymptotic symmetry group at corners. A careful treatment of corner embeddings provides a resolution to the issue of integrability, by extending the phase space. In the last part we bridge asymptotic symmetries and corners by formulating the corner proposal. In essence, the latter focuses on the central question of extracting from classical gravity universal results that are expected to hold in the quantum realm. After reviewing the coadjoint orbit method and Atiyah Lie algebroids, we apply these concepts to the corner proposal. Exercises are solved in the notes, to elucidate the arguments exposed.

Abstract:These notes (prepared for the author's lectures at the Cracow Summer School on Linear Systems organized by S. Mueller-Stach and T. Szemberg, held March 23-27, 2009 at the Pedagogical University of Cracow under the sponsorship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) present a number of open problems on the theory of smooth projective algebraic surfaces, and put into historical context recent work on a range of topics, including Mori dream spaces and the finite generation of the Cox ring, Seshadri constants, and the resurgence of homogeneous ideals and the problem of which ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals contain given symbolic powers of those ideals. Abstract:Let $\theta\in\mathbb{R}^d$. We associate three objects to each approximation $(p,q)\in \mathbb{Z}^d\times \mathbb{N}$ of $\theta$: the projection of the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ to the hyperplane of the first $d$ coordinates along the approximating vector $(p,q)$; the displacement vector $(p - q\theta)$; and the residue classes of the components of the $(d + 1)$-tuple $(p, q)$ modulo all primes. All of these have been studied in connection with Diophantine approximation problems. We consider the asymptotic distribution of all of these quantities, properly rescaled, as $(p, q)$ ranges over the best approximants and $\epsilon$-approximants of $\theta$, and describe limiting measures on the relevant spaces, which hold for Lebesgue a.e. $\theta$. We also consider a similar problem for vectors $\theta$ whose components, together with 1, span a totally real number field of degree $d+1$. Our technique involve recasting the problem as an equidistribution problem for a cross-section of a one-parameter flow on an adelic space, which is a fibration over the space of $(d + 1)$-dimensional lattices. Our results generalize results of many previous authors, to higher dimensions and to joint equidistribution.

Abstract:We prove a version of the classical Runge and Mergelyan uniform approximation theorems for non-orientable minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space R3. Then, we obtain some geometric applications. Among them, we emphasize the following ones: 1. A Gunning-Narasimhan type theorem for non-orientable conformal surfaces. 2. An existence theorem for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3, with arbitrary conformal structure, properly projecting into a plane. 3. An existence result for non-orientable minimal surfaces in R3 with arbitrary conformal structure and Gauss map omitting one projective direction.

The first concerns the role of ``infinitely singular'' or ``non Abhyankar'' valuations in the study of local uniformization of valuations with a view to resolution of singularities in positive characteristic. Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.
