On the power series of involutory functions

Abstract:It is shown that the coefficients of any involutory function $f$ represented as a power series can be expressed in terms of multivariable Lah polynomials. This result is based on the fact that any such $f~(\neq\text{identity})$ can be regarded as a (compositional) conjugate of negative identity. Moreover, a constructive proof of this statement is given.

Obviously, the case for x = l of (1.1) could be generally treated by means of the well-known Euler-Maclaurin summation formula. The object of this paper is to find a general summation formula for (1.1) that could be applied readily to some interesting special cases, e.g., those with f{i)-t (2 ei?), / ( / ) = logf (V>1), and f(t) = q (0<q<l)9 respectively. Related results will be presented in Sections 3-5. Recall that for the particular case f(t) = t and [a, b) = [0, oo) with/? being a positive integer, we have the classical result (cf. [1], [2], [4])

Abstract:Starting from the representation of a function $f(x,y)$ as a formal power series with Taylor coefficients $f_{m,n}$, we establish a formal series for the implicit function $y=y(x)$ such that $f(x,y)=0$ and the coefficients of the series for $y$ depend exclusively on the $f_{m,n}$. The solution to this problem provided here relies on using partial Bell polynomials and their orthogonal companions.

Abstract:We investigate a class of power series occurring in some problems in quantum optics. Their coefficients are either Gegenbauer or Laguerre polynomials multiplied by binomial coefficients. Although their sums have been known for a long time, we employ here a different method to recover them as higher-order derivatives of the generating function of the given orthogonal polynomials. The key point in our proof consists in exploiting a specific functional equation satisfied by the generating function in conjunction with Cauchy's integral formula for the derivatives of a holomorphic function. Special or limiting cases of Gegenbauer polynomials include the Legendre and Chebyshev polynomials. The series of Hermite polynomials is treated in a straightforward way, as well as an asymptotic case of either the Gegenbauer or the Laguerre series. Further, we have succeeded in evaluating the sum of a similar power series which is a higher-order derivative of Mehler's generating function. As a prerequisite, we have used a convenient factorization of the latter that enabled us to employ a particular Laguerre expansion. Mehler's summation formula is then applied in quantum mechanics in order to retrieve the propagator of a linear harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:Let be an analytic function at 0, and let be the sequence of Appell polynomials, referred to as C-polynomials associated to f , constructed from the sequence of coefficients . We also define as the sequence of C-polynomials associated to the function , called P-polynomials associated to f . This work investigates three main topics. Firstly, we examine the properties of C-polynomials and P-polynomials and the underlying features that connect them. Secondly, drawing inspiration from the definition of P-polynomials and subject to an additional condition on f , we introduce and study the bivariate complex function , which generalizes the function and is denoted by . Thirdly, the paper's main contribution is the generalization of the Hurwitz zeta function and its fundamental properties, most notably Hurwitz's formula, by constructing a novel class of functions defined by , which are intrinsically linked to C-polynomials and referred to as LC-functions associated to f (the constant is a positive integer dependent on the choice of f ).

Transition formulas for involution Schubert polynomials

Abstract:The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.

Abstract:This article deals with three types of mutually inverse series relating Ferrers and associated Legendre functions of arbitrary complex indexes and orders established on the base of integral representations by using a number of generating functions (some of them are novel) for polynomials expressed in terms of hypergeometric or generalized hypergeometric polynomials. High-order asymptotics of above-mentioned polynomials are indicated. In particular, as n → ∞ , a uniform asymptotics for Gegenbauer polynomials C n λ − n ( x ) , λ ∈ C , is obtained. In special cases, the inverse series turn into novel mutually inverse finite sums relating Gegenbauer or associated Legendre polynomials of different arguments as well as into novel connection formulas for Gegenbauer and associated Legendre polynomials.

Abstract:This is a lecture on the theory of formal power series developed entirely without any analytic machinery. Combining ideas from various authors we are able to prove Newton's binomial theorem, Jacobi's triple product, the Rogers--Ramanujan identities and many other prominent results. We apply these methods to derive several combinatorial theorems including Ramanujan's partition congruences, generating functions of Stirling numbers and Jacobi's four-square theorem. We further discuss formal Laurent series and multivariate power series and end with a proof of MacMahon's master theorem.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to investigate the issues of multiplicative inverses and composition in the set of formal Laurent series. We show the lack of uniqueness of inverse series to formal Laurent series. Some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of inverse series to a certain type formal Laurent series are provided. Moreover, we define a general composition of formal Laurent series and investigate the Right Distributive Law and the Chain Rule for formal Laurent series. Finally, we provide a sufficient condition for the boundary convergence of formal Laurent series.

Abstract:For every positive integer $n$, consider the linear operator $\U_{n}$ on polynomials of degree at most $d$ with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write $\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) t^{m}$, for some polynomial $g(m)$ with rational coefficients, then $\frac{\U_{n}h(t)}{(1- t)^{d + 1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0} g(nm) t^{m}$. We show that there exists a positive integer $n_{d}$, depending only on $d$, such that if $h(t)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $d$ with nonnegative integer coefficients and $h(0) \geq 1$, then for $n \geq n_{d}$, $\U_{n}h(t)$ has simple, real, strictly negative roots and positive, strictly log concave and strictly unimodal coefficients. Applications are given to Ehrhart $\delta$-polynomials and unimodular triangulations of dilations of lattice polytopes, as well as Hilbert series of Veronese subrings of Cohen--MacCauley graded rings.

Abstract:In this paper, by means of the Faà di Bruno formula, with the help of explicit formulas for partial Bell polynomials at specific arguments of two specific sequences generated by derivatives at the origin of the inverse sine and inverse cosine functions, and by virtue of two combinatorial identities containing the Stirling numbers of the first kind, the author establishes power series expansions for real powers of the inverse cosine (sine) functions and the inverse hyperbolic cosine (sine) functions. By comparing different series expansions for the square of the inverse cosine function and for the positive integer power of the inverse sine function, the author not only finds infinite series representations of the circular constant π and its real powers, but also derives several combinatorial identities involving central binomial coefficients and the Stirling numbers of the first kind.

On the Liouville function at polynomial arguments

Abstract:Let $\lambda$ denote the Liouville function. A problem posed by Chowla and by Cassaigne-Ferenczi-Mauduit-Rivat-Sárközy asks to show that if $P(x)\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$, then the sequence $\lambda(P(n))$ changes sign infinitely often, assuming only that $P(x)$ is not the square of another polynomial. We show that the sequence $\lambda(P(n))$ indeed changes sign infinitely often, provided that either (i) $P$ factorizes into linear factors over the rationals; or (ii) $P$ is a reducible cubic polynomial; or (iii) $P$ factorizes into a product of any number of quadratics of a certain type; or (iv) $P$ is any polynomial not belonging to an exceptional set of density zero. Concerning (i), we prove more generally that the partial sums of $g(P(n))$ for $g$ a bounded multiplicative function exhibit nontrivial cancellation under necessary and sufficient conditions on $g$. This establishes a "99% version" of Elliott's conjecture for multiplicative functions taking values in the roots of unity of some order. Part (iv) also generalizes to the setting of $g(P(n))$ and provides a multiplicative function analogue of a recent result of Skorobogatov and Sofos on almost all polynomials attaining a prime value.

Abstract:In this article, we present the integral representations of the power series diagonals. Such representations are obtained by lowering the integration multiplicity for the previously known integral representation. The procedure is carried out within the framework of Leray's residue theory. The concept of the amoeba of the complex analytical hypersurface plays an essential role in the construction of new integral representations.

Abstract:This note is concerned with series of the forms $\sum f(a^n)$ and $\sum f(n^{-a})$ where f(a) possesses a Mellin transform and $a > 1$ or $a<0$ respectively. Integral representations are derived and used to transform these series in several ways yielding a selection of interesting integral evaluations involving Riemann's function $\zeta(s)$, limits and series representations containing hyperpowers. A number of examples of such sums are provided, each of which is investigated for possible new structure. In one case, we obtain a generalization of Riemann's classic relationship among the Zeta, Gamma and Jacobi Theta functions.

Abstract:We investigate power series that converge to a bounded function on the real line. First, we establish relations between coefficients of a power series and boundedness of the resulting function; in particular, we show that boundedness can be prevented by certain Turán inequalities and, in the case of real coefficients, by certain sign patterns. Second, we show that the set of bounded power series naturally supports three topologies and that these topologies are inequivalent and incomplete. In each case, we determine the topological completion. Third, we study the algebra of bounded power series, revealing the key role of the backward shift operator.

Abstract:In this paper, we present five different formulas for both discrete and fractional iterations of an invertible power series $f$ utilizing a novel and unifying approach from umbral calculus. Established formulas are extended, and their proofs simplified, while new formulas are introduced. In particular, through the use of $q$-calculus identities, we eliminate the requirement for $f'(0)$ to equal $1$ and, consequently, the corresponding new expressions for the iterative logarithm are derived.

Abstract:Let a function f with real poles be expanded in a Wolff-Denjoy series with positive coefficients. The main result of the note states that if we subtract its linear part from the function 1/f, then the remaining fractional part of this function will also expand into Wolff-Denjoy series (its poles are also real, and the coefficients of the series are negative). In other words, for Wolff-Denjoy series of the indicated form, an analogue of the well-known Wiener lemma in the theory of Fourier series is true up to a linear term. Applications of the result to operator theory are given.
