Abstract:Polya-Carlson theorem asserts that if a power series with integer coefficients and convergence radius 1 can be extended holomorphically out of the unit disc, it must represent a rational function. In this note, we give a generalization of this result to multivariate case and give an application to rationality theorem about D-finite power series.

Abstract:We prove a result that can be seen as an analogue of the Pólya-Carlson theorem for multivariate D-finite power series with coefficients in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. In the special case that the coefficients are algebraic integers, our main result says that if $$F(x_1,\ldots ,x_m)=\sum f(n_1,\ldots ,n_m)x_1^{n_1}\cdots x_m^{n_m}$$ is a D-finite power series in $m$ variables with algebraic integer coefficients and if the logarithmic Weil height of $f(n_1,\ldots ,n_m)$ is $o(n_1+\cdots +n_m)$, then $F$ is a rational function and, up to scalar multiplication, every irreducible factor of the denominator of $F$ has the form $1-\zeta x_1^{q_1}\cdots x_m^{q_m}$ where $\zeta$ is a root of unity and $q_1,\ldots ,q_m$ are nonnegative integers, not all of which are zero.

Abstract:Let $\sum a_nx^n\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[[x]]$ be the power series representation of a rational function and let $f:\ \{0,1,\ldots\}\rightarrow \bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ be a so-called almost quasi-polynomial. Under a necessary stability condition, we prove that $\sum f(n)a_nx^n$ satisfies the Pólya-Carlson dichotomy: it is either a rational function or it cannot be extended analytically to a strictly larger domain than its disk of convergence. This latter property is much stronger than being transcendental. The first application and motivation of our result is the solution of a conjecture by Byszewski-Cornelissen. This gives a complete understanding of the analytic continuation behavior of the Artin-Mazur zeta function associated to a dynamical system on an abelian variety. Further applications include the solution of a conjecture by Bell-Miles-Ward and a significant case of an open problem by Royals-Ward.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the multivariate version of Christol's theorem about algebraic power series with coefficients in finite fields, as well as of its extension to perfect ground fields of positive characteristic obtained independently by Denef and Lipshitz, Sharif and Woodcok, and Harase. Our proof is elementary, effective, and allows for much sharper estimates. We discuss various applications of such estimates, in particular to a problem raised by Deligne concerning the algebraicity degree of reductions modulo $p$ of diagonals of multivariate algebraic power series with integer coefficients.

Unimodality preservation by ratios of functional series and integral transforms

Abstract:Elementary, but very useful lemma due to Biernacki and Krzyż (1955) asserts that the ratio of two power series inherits monotonicity from that of the sequence of ratios of their corresponding coefficients. Over the last two decades it has been realized that, under some additional assumptions, similar claims hold for more general series ratios as well as for unimodality in place of monotonicity. This paper continues this line of research: we consider ratios of general functional series and integral transforms and furnish natural sufficient conditions for preservation of unimodality by such ratios. Numerous series and integral transforms appearing in applications satisfy our sufficient conditions, including Dirichlet, factorial and inverse factorial series, Laplace, Mellin and generalized Stieltjes transforms, among many others. Finally, we illustrate our general results by exhibiting certain statements on monotonicity patterns for ratios of some special functions. The key role in our considerations is played by the notion of sign regularity.

Abstract:Considering the holomorphic functions in a polycylindrical domain which are rational in some of the variables for the arbitrary fixed values of other variables, we prove that the functions are representable as a ratio of polynomials in these variables whose coefficients are holomorphic in the remaining variables. We use the Kronecker method for establishing some criterion for the rationality of a holomorphic function of one complex variable in a neighborhood of zero by using the properties of Hankel matrices.

Abstract:We consider a formal power series in one variable whose coefficients are holomorphic functions in a given multidimensional complex domain. Assume the following two conditions on the series. (C1) The restriction of the series at each point of a dense subset of the domain converges in an open disk of a fixed radius. (C2) The series is algebraic over the ring of holomophic functions on the direct product space of the domain and the disk. The main theorem of the present note is that the series defines a holomorphic function on the direct product space. We lso give an example where the condition (C2) is essentially necessary.

Abstract:The development reported in Part 1 of this series is continued by presenting a unifying theory for rational matrices at infinity. The cornerstone for the development is again the homogeneous form for polynomial and rational matrices. It is shown that when a rational matrix is factorized in matrix fraction description (MFD), redundancy at infinity may be introduced. This redundancy can be characterized precisely as the common divisor of the numerator and the denominator matrices at infinity. Moreover, when the numerator and the denominator matrices are completely coprime, the determinantal degree of the denominator is the McMillan degree of the rational matrix.

Abstract:We study the singular series associated to a cubic form with integer coefficients. If the number of variables is at least $10$, we prove the absolute convergence (and hence positivity) under the assumption of Davenport's Geometric Condition, improving on a result of Heath-Brown. For the case of $9$ variables, we give a conditional treatment. We also provide a new short and elementary proof of Davenport's Shrinking Lemma which has been a crucial tool in previous literature on this and related problems.

Abstract:In this paper we study the generating function f(t) for the sequence of the moments \int_{\gamma}P^i(z)q(z)d z, i\geq 0, where P(z),q(z) are rational functions of one complex variable and \gamma is a curve in C. We calculate an analytical expression for f(t) and provide conditions implying the rationality and the vanishing of f(t). In particular, for P(z) in generic position we give an explicit criterion for a function q(z) to be orthogonal to all powers of P(z). Besides, we prove a stronger form of the Wermer theorem, describing analytic functions satisfying \int_{S^1}h^i(z)g^j(z)g'(z)d z=0, i\geq 0, j\geq 0, in the case where the functions h(z),g(z) are rational. We also generalize the theorem of Duistermaat and van der Kallen about Laurent polynomials L(z) whose integral positive powers have no constant term, and prove other results about Laurent polynomials L(z),m(z) satisfying \int_{S^1}L^i(z)m(z)d z=0, i\geq i_0.

Abstract:A new approach for dealing with the structural properties of polynomial and rational matrices at infinity is presented. In this first part of the development, the attention is focused on polynomial matrices. Some fundamental notions and definitions such as the notion of homogeneous form for polynomial matrices are introduced. These enable us to define important concepts such as the cancellation at infinity, coprimeness at infinity, etc. for polynomial matrices in precisely the same way as for their finite counterparts. We demonstrate that our approach allows interesting generalizations of some important conventional concepts.
The biholomorphic invariance of essential normality on bounded symmetric domains

Abstract:This paper mainly concerns the biholomorphic invariance of $p$-essential normality of Hilbert modules on bounded symmetric domains. By establishing new integral formulas concerning rational function kernels for the Taylor functional calculus, we prove a biholomorphic invariance result related to the $p$-essential normality. Furthermore, for quotient analytic Hilbert submodules determined by analytic varieties, we develop an algebraic approach to proving that the $p$-essential normality is preserved invariant if the coordinate multipliers are replaced by arbitrary automorphism multipliers. Moreover, the Taylor spectrum of the compression tuple is calculated under a mild condition, which gives a solvability result of the corona problem for quotient submodules. As applications, we extend the recent results on the equivalence between $\infty$-essential normality and hyperrigidity.

Abstract:We show that a nonsingular complex projective variety admitting a holomorphic vector field with nonempty isolated zeroes, is rational using a key technique by Harvey-Lawson on finite volume flows. This statement was conjectured by J. Carrell. By the same technique, we obtain a uniform upper bound of Betti numbers of nonsingular complex projective variety admitting a holomorphic vector field with exact one zero point. Such an upper bound depends only on the dimension of the variety, which is a stronger version of a result of Akyildiz and Carrell.

Abstract:We provide detailed local descriptions of stable polynomials in terms of their homogeneous decompositions, Puiseux expansions, and transfer function realizations. We use this theory to first prove that bounded rational functions on the polydisk possess non-tangential limits at every boundary point. We relate higher non-tangential regularity and distinguished boundary behavior of bounded rational functions to geometric properties of the zero sets of stable polynomials via our local descriptions. For a fixed stable polynomial $p$, we analyze the ideal of numerators $q$ such that $q/p$ is bounded on the bi-upper half plane. We completely characterize this ideal in several geometrically interesting situations including smooth points, double points, and ordinary multiple points of $p$. Finally, we analyze integrability properties of bounded rational functions and their derivatives on the bidisk.

Abstract:Colloquially, quantitatively Hyper-Positive functions form a sub-family of the "Strictly Positive real" functions, where in addition state-space realization always exists and the limit at infinity is non-singular. In scalar terminology, such function maps the right-half of the complex plane into a sub-region of the right-half plane, which can be contained in a finite disk. Moreover, under inversion this disk is mapped onto itself. In [9] we showed that these functions appear in the "absolute stability" Lurie-type problems and characterized these families through their state-space realization, in the spirit of the Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma. Here, we present additional characterizations, i.e. as rational functions and through the corresponding kernels. Subsequently, a description of all solutions of the tangential Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem, in this framework, is presented.

Abstract:If f is a power series with radius R of convergence, , it is well-known that the method of Carathéodory–Fejér constructs polynomial approximations of f on the closed unit disk which show the typical phenomenon of near-circularity on the unit circle. Let E be compact and connected and let f be holomorphic on E . If is a sequence of polynomials converging maximally to f on E , it is shown that the modulus of the error functions is asymptotically constant in capacity on level lines of the Green's function of the complement of E in with pole at infinity, thereby reflecting a type of near-circularity, but without gaining knowledge of the winding numbers of the error curves with respect to the point 0.
