Abstract:In this paper we rectify two previous results found in the literature. Our work leads to a new upper bound for the largest sum-free subset of $[1,n]$ with lowest value in $\left [\frac{n}{3},\frac{n}{2}\right ]$, and the identification of all patterns that can be used to form sum-free sets of maximum cardinality.

Abstract:We investigate subsets with small sumset in arbitrary abelian groups. For an abelian group $G$ and an $n$-element subset $Y \subseteq G$ we show that if $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, then the number of subsets $A \subseteq Y$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$ is at most \[2^{o(s)}\binom{\frac{m+\beta}{2}}{s},\] where $\beta$ is the size of the largest subgroup of $G$ of size at most $\left(1+o(1)\right)m$. This bound is sharp for $\mathbb{Z}$ and many other groups. Our result improves the one of Campos and nearly bridges the remaining gap in a conjecture of Alon, Balogh, Morris, and Samotij. We also explore the behaviour of uniformly chosen random sets $A \subseteq \{1,\ldots,n\}$ with $|A| = s$ and $|A + A| \leq m$. Under the same assumption that $m \ll s^2/(\log n)^2$, we show that with high probability there exists an arithmetic progression $P \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ of size at most $m/2 + o(m)$ containing all but $o(s)$ elements of $A$. Analogous results are obtained for asymmetric sumsets, improving results by Campos, Coulson, Serra, and Wötzel. The main tool behind our proofs is a graph container theorem combined with a variant of an asymmetric hypergraph container theorem.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number with $p\equiv 2\pmod{3}$ and let $n\ge 1$ be a dimension. It is known that a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ can have at most the size $\frac13(p+1)p^{n-1}$ and that, up to automorphisms of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$, the only extremal example is the `cuboid' $\bigl[\frac{p+1}3, \frac{2p-1}3\bigr]\times {\mathbb F}_p^{n-1}$. For $p\ge 11$ we show that if a sum-free subset of ${\mathbb F}_p^n$ is not contained in such an extremal one, then its size is at most $\frac13(p-2)p^{n-1}$. This bound is optimal and we classify the extremal configurations. The remaining cases $p=2, 5$ are known to behave differently. For $p=3$ the analogous question was solved by Vsevolod Lev, and for $p\equiv 1\pmod{3}$ it is less interesting.

Abstract:Given $A$ a set of $N$ positive integers, an old question in additive combinatorics asks that whether $A$ contains a sum-free subset of size at least $N/3+\omega(N)$ for some increasing unbounded function $\omega$. The question is generally attacked in the literature by considering another conjecture, which asserts that as $N\to\infty$, $\max_{x\in\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}}\sum_{n\in A}({\bf 1}_{(1/3,2/3)}-1/3)(nx)\to\infty$. This conjecture, if true, would also imply that a similar phenomenon occurs for $(2k,4k)$-sum-free sets for every $k\geq1$. In this note, we prove the latter result directly. The new ingredient of our proof is a structural analysis on the host set $A$, which might be of independent interest.

The structure of large sum-free sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$

Abstract:A set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^n$ is sum-free if $A+A$ does not intersect $A$. If $p\equiv 2 \mod 3$, the maximal size of a sum-free in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ is known to be $(p^n+p^{n-1})/3$. We show that if a sum-free set $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p^n$ has size at least $p^n/3-p^{n-1}/6+p^{n-2}$, then there exists subspace $V<\mathbb{F}_p^n$ of co-dimension 1 such that $A$ is contained in $(p+1)/3$ cosets of $V$. For $p=5$ specifically, we show the stronger result that every sum-free set of size larger than $1.2\cdot 5^{n-1}$ has this property, thus improving on a recent theorem of Lev.

Abstract:Let $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ be a finite set. It is known that the sumset $NA$ has predictable size ($\vert NA\vert = P_A(N)$ for some $P_A(X) \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$) and structure (all of the lattice points in some finite cone other than all of the lattice points in a finite collection of exceptional subcones), once $N$ is larger than some threshold. In previous work, joint with Shakan, the first and third named authors established the first effective bounds for both of these thresholds for an arbitrary set $A$. In this article we substantially improve each of these bounds, coming much closer to the corresponding lower bounds known.

Abstract:Let $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ be a finite set. It is known that $NA$ has a particular size ($\vert NA\vert = P_A(N)$ for some $P_A(X) \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$) and structure (all of the lattice points in a cone other than certain exceptional sets), once $N$ is larger than some threshold. In this article we give the first effective upper bounds for this threshold for arbitrary $A$. Such explicit results were only previously known in the special cases when $d=1$, when the convex hull of $A$ is a simplex or when $\vert A\vert = d+2$, results which we improve.

Sumsets, 3SUM, Subset Sum: Now for Real!

Abstract:We study a broad class of algorithmic problems with an "additive flavor" such as computing sumsets, 3SUM, Subset Sum and geometric pattern matching. Our starting point is that these problems can often be solved efficiently for integers, owed to the rich available tool set including bit-tricks, linear hashing, and the Fast Fourier Transform. However, for real numbers these tools are not available, leading to significant gaps in the best-known running times for integer inputs versus for real inputs. In this work our goal is to close this gap. As our key contribution we design a new technique for computing real sumsets. It is based on a surprising blend of algebraic ideas (like Prony's method and coprime factorizations) with combinatorial tricks. We then apply our new algorithm to the aforementioned problems and successfully obtain, in all cases, equally fast algorithms for real inputs. Specifically, we replicate the running times of the following landmark results by randomized algorithms in the standard real RAM model: - Sumsets: Given two sets $A,B$, their sumset $A+B=\{a+b:a\in A,b\in B\}$ can be computed in time $\tilde O(|A+B|)$ [Cole, Hariharan; STOC'02]. - Geometric pattern matching: Given two sets $A,B$, we can test whether there is some shift such that $A+s\subseteq B$ in time $\tilde O(|A|+|B|)$ [Cardoze, Schulman; FOCS'98]. - 3SUM with preprocessing: We can preprocess three size-$n$ sets $A,B,C$ in time $\tilde O(n^2)$ such that upon query of sets $A'\subseteq A,B'\subseteq B,C'\subseteq C$, the 3SUM instance $(A',B',C')$ can be decided in time $\tilde O(n^{13/7})$ [Chan, Lewenstein; STOC'15]. - Output-sensitive Subset Sum: Given a size-$n$ (multi-)set $X$ and a target $t$, we can compute the set of subset sums $\{\Sigma(X'):X'\subseteq X,\Sigma(X')\leq t\}$ in output-sensitive time $\tilde O(n+\mathrm{out}^{4/3})$ [Bringmann, Nakos; STOC'20].

Freiman's $(3k-4)$-like results for subset and subsequence sums

Abstract:For a nonempty finite set $A$ of integers, let $S(A) = \left\{ \sum_{b\in B} b: \emptyset \not= B\subseteq A\right\}$ be the set of all nonempty subset sums of $A$. In 1995, Nathanson determined the minimum cardinality of $S(A)$ in terms of $|A|$ and described the structure of $A$ for which $|S(A)|$ is the minimum. He asked to characterize the underlying set $A$ if $|S(A)|$ is a small increment to its minimum size. Problems of such nature are inspired by the well-known Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem. In this paper, some results in the direction of Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem for the set of subset sums $S(A)$ are proved. Such results are also extended to the set of subsequence sums $S(\mathbb{A}) = \left\{ \sum_{b\in \mathbb{B}} b: \emptyset \not= \mathbb{B} \subseteq \mathbb{A} \right\}$ of sequence $\mathbb{A}$, where the notation $\mathbb{B} \subseteq \mathbb{A} $, is used for $\mathbb{B}$ is a subsequence of $\mathbb{A}$. The results are further generalized to a generalization of subset and subsequence sums. The main idea of the proofs of the results is to write the set of subset sums $S(A)$ and the set of subsequence sums $S(\mathbb{A})$ in terms of the $h$-fold sumset $hA$ and the $h$-fold restricted sumset $h^\wedge A$. Such representation also gives other proof of some of the results of Nathanson and Mistri et al.

Abstract: Let $A_1,\ldots,A_n$ be finite subsets of an additive abelian group $G$ with $|A_1|=\cdots=|A_n|\ge2$. Concerning the two new kinds of restricted sumsets $$L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_1\in A_1,\ldots,a_n\in A_n,\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n\}$$ and $$C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)=\{a_1+\cdots+a_n:\ a_i\in A_i\ (1\le i\le n),\ \text{and}\ a_i\not=a_{i+1} \ \text{for}\ 1\le i<n,\ \text{and}\ a_n\not=a_1\}$$ recently introduced by the second author, when $G$ is the additive group of a field we obtain lower bounds for $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ and $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ via the polynomial method. Moreover, when $G$ is torsion-free and $A_1=\cdots=A_n$, we determine completely when $|L(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ or $|C(A_1,\ldots,A_n)|$ attains its lower bound.

New lower bounds for three-term progression free sets in $\mathbb{F}_p^n$

Abstract:We prove new lower bounds on the maximum size of sets $A\subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n$ or $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m^n$ not containing three-term arithmetic progressions (consisting of three distinct points). More specifically, we prove that for any fixed integer $m\ge 2$ and sufficiently large $n$ (in terms of $m$), there exists a three-term progression free subset $A\subseteq \mathbb{Z}_m^n$ of size $|A|\ge (cm)^n$ for some absolute constant $c>1/2$. Such a bound for $c=1/2$ can be obtained with a classical construction of Salem and Spencer from 1942, and improving upon this value of $1/2$ has been a well-known open problem (our proof gives $c= 0.54$).

For the restricted sumset $$ S_n(A)=\{a_1+\cdots +a_n:\ a_1,\ldots,a_n\in A,\ \text{and}\ a_i^2\neq a_j^2\ \text{for} \ 1\le i<j\le n\}, $$ by a 2002 result of Liu and Sun we have $$|S_n(A)|\ge (k-1)n-\frac 32n(n-1)+1.$$ In this paper, we determine the structure of $A$ when the lower bound is attained.
Limiting Behavior in Missing Sums of Sumsets

Abstract:We study $|A + A|$ as a random variable, where $A \subseteq \{0, \dots, N\}$ is a random subset such that each $0 \le n \le N$ is included with probability $0 < p < 1$, and where $A + A$ is the set of sums $a + b$ for $a,b$ in $A$. Lazarev, Miller, and O'Bryant studied the distribution of $2N + 1 - |A + A|$, the number of summands not represented in $A + A$ when $p = 1/2$. A recent paper by Chu, King, Luntzlara, Martinez, Miller, Shao, Sun, and Xu generalizes this to all $p\in (0,1)$, calculating the first and second moments of the number of missing summands and establishing exponential upper and lower bounds on the probability of missing exactly $n$ summands, mostly working in the limit of large $N$. We provide exponential bounds on the probability of missing at least $n$ summands, find another expression for the second moment of the number of missing summands, extract its leading-order behavior in the limit of small $p$, and show that the variance grows asymptotically slower than the mean, proving that for small $p$, the number of missing summands is very likely to be near its expected value.

Abstract:We classify the sum-free subsets of ${\mathbb F}_3^n$ whose density exceeds $\frac16$. This yields a resolution of Vsevolod Lev's periodicity conjecture, which asserts that if a sum-free subset ${A\subseteq {\mathbb F}_3^n}$ is maximal with respect to inclusion and aperiodic (in the sense that there is no non-zero vector $v$ satisfying $A+v=A$), then $|A|\le \frac12(3^{n-1}+1)$ -- a bound known to be optimal if $n\ne 2$, while for $n=2$ there are no such sets.

Abstract:Let G be an additive abelian group whose finite subgroups are all cyclic. Let A1,…,An(n>1) be finite subsets of G with cardinality k>0, and let b1,…,bn be pairwise distinct elements of G with odd order. We show that for every positive integer m⩽(k−1)/(n−1) there are more than (k−1)n−(m+1)(n2) sets {a1,…,an} such that a1∈A1,…,an∈An, and both ai≠aj and mai+bi≠maj+bj (or both mai≠maj and ai+bi≠aj+bj) for all 1⩽i<j⩽n. This extends a recent result of Dasgupta, Károlyi, Serra and Szegedy on Snevily's conjecture. Actually stronger results on sumsets with polynomial restrictions are obtained in this paper.

This topic is strongly connected to the knapsack problem which is known to be NP complete. The main goal of the paper is to study the structure of subset sums in a higher dimension.
