Abstract:We consider a wide class of fully nonlinear integro-differential equations that degenerate when the gradient of the solution vanishes. By using compactness and perturbation arguments, we give a complete characterization of the regularity of viscosity solutions according to different diffusion orders. More precisely, when the order of the fractional diffusion is sufficiently close to 2, we obtain Hölder continuity for the gradient of any viscosity solutions and further derive an improved gradient regularity estimate at the origin. For the order of the fractional diffusion in the interval $(1, 2)$, we prove that there is at least one solution of class $C^{1, \alpha}_{\rm loc}$. Additionally, if the order of the fractional diffusion is in the interval $(0,1]$, the local Hölder continuity of solutions is inferred.

Abstract:We investigate the regularity of the solutions for a class of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. In the degenerate scenario, we establish that there exists at least one viscosity solution of class C l o c 1 , α , for some constant α ∈ ( 0 , 1 ) . In addition, under suitable conditions on degree of the operator σ, we prove regularity estimates in Hölder spaces for any viscosity solution. We also examine the singular setting and prove Hölder regularity estimates for the gradient of the solutions.

Abstract:We prove sharp regularity estimates for solutions of highly degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations. These are free boundary models in which a nonlinear diffusion process drives the system only in the region where the gradient surpasses a given threshold. Our main result concerns the existence of a universal modulus of continuity for $Du$, up to the free boundary. Gradient bounds for the $L^\infty$ norm are proven to be uniform with respect to the degree of degeneracy. Several new ingredients are needed and among the tools introduced in this paper is an improvement of regularity lemma designed to measure the oscillation decay concerning the gradient level-set distance. Applications of the methods are discussed at the end of the paper.

Abstract:We provide a sharp $C^{1,\alpha}$ estimate up to the boundary for a viscosity solution of a degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equation with the oblique boundary condition on a $C^1$ domain. To this end, we first obtain a uniform boundary H{ö}lder estimate with the oblique boundary condition in an "almost $C^1$-flat" domain for the equations which is uniformly elliptic only where the gradient is far from some point, and then we establish a desired $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity based on perturbation and compactness arguments.

Abstract:We establish local Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear second order equations with quadratic growth in the gradient and unbounded right-hand side in $L^q$ spaces, for an integrability threshold $q$ guaranteeing the validity of the maximum principle. This is done through a nonlinear Harnack inequality for nonhomogeneous equations driven by a uniformly elliptic Isaacs operator and perturbed by a Hamiltonian term with natural growth in the gradient. As a byproduct, we derive a new Liouville property for entire $L^p$ viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear equations as well as a nonlinear Calderón-Zygmund estimate for strong solutions of such equations.

Pointwise Regularity for Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations in General Forms

Abstract:In this paper, we develop systematically the pointwise regularity for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations in general forms. In particular, the equations with quadratic growth (called natural growth) in the gradient are covered. We obtain a series of interior and boundary pointwise $C^{k,\alpha}$ regularity ($k\geq 1$ and $0<\alpha<1$). In addition, we also derive the pointwise $C^k$ regularity ($k\geq 1$) and $C^{k,\mathrm{lnL}}$ regularity ($k\geq 0$), which correspond to the end points $\alpha=0$ and $\alpha=1$ respectively. Some regularity results are new even for the linear equations. Moreover, the minimum requirements are imposed to obtain above regularity and our proofs are simple.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the regularity results for nonnegative viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear equations of porous medium-type in bounded domains with the zero Dirichlet boundary condition, to be precise, we prove the global $C^{2,\alpha}$-estimates of viscosity solutions. In many PDE problems, the $C^{2,\alpha}$-estimates have been obtained through Schauder-type estimates. However, the Schauder-type estimates are not applicable to the porous medium-type equations. We provide techniques for handling porous medium-type equations so that the global $C^{2,\alpha}$-estimates can be established.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to establish regularity for weak solutions to the nondiagonal quasilinear degenerate elliptic systems related to Hörmander's vector fields, where the coefficients are bounded with vanishing mean oscillation. We first prove $L^p$($p \ge 2$) estimates for gradients of weak solutions by using a priori estimates and a known reverse Hölder inequality, and consider regularity to the corresponding nondiagonal homogeneous degenerate elliptic systems. Then we get higher Morrey and Campanato estimates for gradients of weak solutions to original systems and Hölder estimates for weak solutions.

Abstract:We prove a new, universal gradient continuity estimate for solutions to quasilinear equations with varying coefficients at points on its critical singular set of degeneracy $S(u) := \{X : D u(X) = 0 \}$. Our main Theorem reveals that along $S(u)$, $u$ is asymptotically as regular as solutions to constant coefficient equations. In particular, along the critical set $S(u)$, $Du$ enjoys a modulus of continuity much superior than the, possibly low, continuity feature of the coefficients. Our main, leading result fosters a new understanding on smoothness properties of solutions to degenerate or singular equations, beyond typical elliptic regularity estimates, precisely where the diffusion attributes of the equation collapse.

Abstract:We consider a class of variable-exponent mixed fully nonlinear local and nonlocal degenerate elliptic equations, which degenerate along the set of critical points, $C:=\big\{x:\,Du(x)=0\big\}.$ Under general conditions, first, we establish the Lipschitz regularity of solutions using the Ishii-Lions viscosity method when the order of the fractional Laplacian, $s\in\big(\frac{1}{2},1\big).$ Due to inapplicability of comparison principle for the equations under consideration, one can not use the classical Perron's method for the existence of a solution. However, using the Lipschitz estimates established in theorem and vanishing viscosity method, we get the existence of solution. We further prove interior $C^{1,\delta}$ regularity of the viscosity solutions using an improvement of the flatness technique when $s$ is close enough to $1.$

Abstract:This paper studies a maximal $L^q$-regularity property for nonlinear elliptic equations of second order with a zero-th order term and gradient nonlinearities having superlinear and sub-quadratic growth, complemented with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The approach is based on the combination of linear elliptic regularity theory and interpolation inequalities, so that the analysis of the maximal regularity estimates boils down to determine lower order integral bounds. The latter are achieved via a $L^p$ duality method, which exploits the regularity properties of solutions to stationary Fokker-Planck equations. For the latter problems, we discuss both global and local estimates. Our main novelties for the regularity properties of this class of nonlinear elliptic boundary-value problems are the treatment of equations with a zero-th order term together with the analysis of the end-point summability threshold $q=d(\gamma-1)/\gamma$, $d$ being the dimension of the ambient space and $\gamma>1$ the growth of the first-order term in the gradient variable.

Abstract:We study the regularity and comparison principle for a gradient degenerate Neumann problem. The problem is a generalization of the Signorini or thin obstacle problem which appears in the study of certain singular anisotropic free boundary problems arising from homogenization. In scaling terms, the problem is critical since the gradient degeneracy and the Neumann PDE operator are of the same order. We show the (optimal) $C^{1,\frac{1}{2}}$ regularity in dimension $d=2$ and we show the same regularity result in $d\geq 3$ conditional on the assumption that the degenerate values of the solution do not accumulate. We also prove a comparison principle characterizing minimal supersolutions, which we believe will have applications to homogenization and other related scaling limits.

Abstract:In this paper we prove Krylov's boundary gradient type estimates (and regularity) for solutions to fully nonlinear differential inequalities with unbounded coefficients and quadratic growth on the gradient with C-1,C-dini boundary data. This means that drift coefficients and the right-hand side (RHS) are in L-q with q > n. We also show that in the case the RHS is in L' the result does not hold and solutions may fail to be even Lipschitz in (tiny) neighborhoods of the boundary. Our approach is based on a new improvement of flatness argument together with an iteration process based on scaling arguments and perturbation by linear functions. Our results can be seen as an extension of the corresponding ones obtained in [L. Silvestre and B. Sirakov, Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 39 (2014), pp. 1694-1717] in the case of bounded coefficients and no quadratic term.
