Abstract:In this paper, we define two particular forms of non-termination, namely loops and binary chains , in an abstract framework that encompasses term rewriting and logic programming. The definition of loops relies on the notion of compatibility of binary relations. We also present a syntactic criterion for the detection of a special case of binary chains. Moreover, we describe our implementation NTI and compare its results at the Termination Competition 2023 with those of leading analyzers.

Abstract:There are two kinds of approaches for termination analysis of logic programs: "transformational" and "direct" ones. Direct approaches prove termination directly on the basis of the logic program. Transformational approaches transform a logic program into a term rewrite system (TRS) and then analyze termination of the resulting TRS instead. Thus, transformational approaches make all methods previously developed for TRSs available for logic programs as well. However, the applicability of most existing transformations is quite restricted, as they can only be used for certain subclasses of logic programs. (Most of them are restricted to well-moded programs.) In this paper we improve these transformations such that they become applicable for any definite logic program. To simulate the behavior of logic programs by TRSs, we slightly modify the notion of rewriting by permitting infinite terms. We show that our transformation results in TRSs which are indeed suitable for automated termination analysis. In contrast to most other methods for termination of logic programs, our technique is also sound for logic programming without occur check, which is typically used in practice. We implemented our approach in the termination prover AProVE and successfully evaluated it on a large collection of examples.

Abstract:In multidisciplinary optimization the designer needs to find solution to optimization problems which include a number of usually contradicting criteria. Such a problem is mathematically related to the field of nonlinear vector optimization where there are many numerical methods capable of providing a solution. However, only a few of those are suitable for real multidisciplinary design in industry because an iteration design circle usually is very time-consuming. This is due to the time scales and computational resources associated with each iterative design cycle. The recently suggested Physical Programming Method appears to match many requirements raised in industrial applications. The method is modified to make its realization easier and more efficient, the main focus being the even generation of the complete Pareto set. The method is used to find the Pareto surface for different test cases.

Abstract:Termination of logic programs depends critically on the selection rule, i.e. the rule that determines which atom is selected in each resolution step. In this article, we classify programs (and queries) according to the selection rules for which they terminate. This is a survey and unified view on different approaches in the literature. For each class, we present a sufficient, for most classes even necessary, criterion for determining that a program is in that class. We study six classes: a program strongly terminates if it terminates for all selection rules; a program input terminates if it terminates for selection rules which only select atoms that are sufficiently instantiated in their input positions, so that these arguments do not get instantiated any further by the unification; a program local delay terminates if it terminates for local selection rules which only select atoms that are bounded w.r.t. an appropriate level mapping; a program left-terminates if it terminates for the usual left-to-right selection rule; a program exists-terminates if there exists a selection rule for which it terminates; finally, a program has bounded nondeterminism if it only has finitely many refutations. We propose a semantics-preserving transformation from programs with bounded nondeterminism into strongly terminating programs. Moreover, by unifying different formalisms and making appropriate assumptions, we are able to establish a formal hierarchy between the different classes.

Abstract:We present a heuristic framework for attacking the undecidable termination problem of logic programs, as an alternative to current termination/non-termination proof approaches. We introduce an idea of termination prediction, which predicts termination of a logic program in case that neither a termination nor a non-termination proof is applicable. We establish a necessary and sufficient characterization of infinite (generalized) SLDNF-derivations with arbitrary (concrete or moded) queries, and develop an algorithm that predicts termination of general logic programs with arbitrary non-floundering queries. We have implemented a termination prediction tool and obtained quite satisfactory experimental results. Except for five programs which break the experiment time limit, our prediction is 100% correct for all 296 benchmark programs of the Termination Competition 2007, of which eighteen programs cannot be proved by any of the existing state-of-the-art analyzers like AProVE07, NTI, Polytool and TALP.

Abstract:A new technique is presented to prove non-termination of term rewriting. The basic idea is to find a non-empty regular language of terms that is closed under rewriting and does not contain normal forms. It is automated by representing the language by a tree automaton with a fixed number of states, and expressing the mentioned requirements in a SAT formula. Satisfiability of this formula implies non-termination. Our approach succeeds for many examples where all earlier techniques fail, for instance for the S-rule from combinatory logic.

Total Outcome Logic: Proving Termination and Nontermination in Programs with Branching

Abstract:While there is a long tradition of reasoning about termination (and nontermination) in the context of program analysis, specialized logics are typically needed to give different termination guarantees. This includes partial correctness, where termination is not guaranteed, and total correctness, where it is guaranteed. We present Total Outcome Logic, a single logic which can express the full spectrum of termination conditions and program properties offered by the aforementioned logics. Total Outcome Logic extends termination and incorrectness reasoning across different kinds of branching effects, so that a single metatheory powers this reasoning in different kinds of programs, including nondeterministic and probabilistic. We demonstrate the utility of this approach through a variety of case studies.

Abstract:We consider the termination/non-termination property of a class of loops. Such loops are commonly used abstractions of real program pieces. Second-order logic is a convenient language to express non-termination. Of course, such property is generally undecidable. However, by restricting the language to known decidable cases, we exhibit new classes of loops, the non-termination of which is decidable. We present a bunch of examples.

Abstract:Recently it was shown that it is undecidable whether a term rewrite system can be proved terminating by a polynomial interpretation in the natural numbers. In this paper we show that this is also the case when restricting the interpretations to linear polynomials, as is often done in tools, and when only considering single-rule rewrite systems. What is more, the new undecidability proof is simpler than the previous one. We further show that polynomial termination over the rationals/reals is undecidable.

Abstract:In this paper we examine a number of term rewriting system for integer number representations, building further upon the datatype defining systems described in [2]. In particular, we look at automated methods for proving confluence and termination in binary and decimal term rewriting systems for both append and tree constructor functions. We find that some of these term rewriting systems are not strongly terminating, which we resolve with minor changes to these systems. Moreover, most of the term rewriting systems discussed do not exhibit the confluence property, which seems more difficult to resolve.

Abstract:We present decidability results for termination of classes of term rewriting systems modulo permutative theories. Termination and innermost termination modulo permutative theories are shown to be decidable for term rewrite systems (TRS) whose right-hand side terms are restricted to be shallow (variables occur at depth at most one) and linear (each variable occurs at most once). Innermost termination modulo permutative theories is also shown to be decidable for shallow TRS. We first show that a shallow TRS can be transformed into a flat (only variables and constants occur at depth one) TRS while preserving termination and innermost termination. The decidability results are then proved by showing that (a) for right-flat right-linear (flat) TRS, non-termination (respectively, innermost non-termination) implies non-termination starting from flat terms, and (b) for right-flat TRS, the existence of non-terminating derivations starting from a given term is decidable. On the negative side, we show PSPACE-hardness of termination and innermost termination for shallow right-linear TRS, and undecidability of termination for flat TRS.

Abstract:Reversible Boolean Circuits are an interesting computational model under many aspects and in different fields, ranging from Reversible Computing to Quantum Computing. Our contribution is to describe a specific class of Reversible Boolean Circuits - which is as expressive as classical circuits - as a bi-dimensional diagrammatic programming language. We uniformly represent the Reversible Boolean Circuits we focus on as a free 3-category Toff. This formalism allows us to incorporate the representation of circuits and of rewriting rules on them, and to prove termination of rewriting. Termination follows from defining a non-identities-preserving functor from our free 3-category Toff into a suitable 3-category Move that traces the "moves" applied to wires inside circuits.

Small Term Reachability and Related Problems for Terminating Term Rewriting Systems

Abstract:Motivated by an application where we try to make proofs for Description Logic inferences smaller by rewriting, we consider the following decision problem, which we call the small term reachability problem: given a term rewriting system $R$, a term $s$, and a natural number $n$, decide whether there is a term $t$ of size $\leq n$ reachable from $s$ using the rules of $R$. We investigate the complexity of this problem depending on how termination of $R$ can be established. We show that the problem is in general NP-complete for length-reducing term rewriting systems. Its complexity increases to N2ExpTime-complete (NExpTime-complete) if termination is proved using a (linear) polynomial order and to PSpace-complete for systems whose termination can be shown using a restricted class of Knuth-Bendix orders. Confluence reduces the complexity to P for the length-reducing case, but has no effect on the worst-case complexity in the other two cases. Finally, we consider the large term reachability problem, a variant of the problem where we are interested in reachability of a term of size $\geq n$. It turns out that this seemingly innocuous modification in some cases changes the complexity of the problem, which may also become dependent on whether the number $n$ is is represented in unary or binary encoding, whereas this makes no difference for the complexity of the small term reachability problem.

Abstract:Higher-order rewriting is a framework in which one can write higher-order programs and study their properties. One such property is termination: the situation that for all inputs, the program eventually halts its execution and produces an output. Several tools have been developed to check whether higher-order rewriting systems are terminating. However, developing such tools is difficult and can be error-prone. In this paper, we present a way of certifying termination proofs of higher-order term rewriting systems. We formalize a specific method, namely the polynomial interpretation method, that is used to prove termination. In addition, we give a program that turns the output of Wanda, a termination analysis tool for higher-order rewriting systems, into a Coq script, so that we can check whether the output is a valid proof of termination.

Abstract:Proving program termination is key to guaranteeing absence of undesirable behaviour, such as hanging programs and even security vulnerabilities such as denial-of-service attacks. To make termination checks scale to large systems, interprocedural termination analysis seems essential, which is a largely unexplored area of research in termination analysis, where most effort has focussed on difficult single-procedure problems. We present a modular termination analysis for C programs using template-based interprocedural summarisation. Our analysis combines a context-sensitive, over-approximating forward analysis with the inference of under-approximating preconditions for termination. Bit-precise termination arguments are synthesised over lexicographic linear ranking function templates. Our experimental results show that our tool 2LS outperforms state-of-the-art alternatives, and demonstrate the clear advantage of interprocedural reasoning over monolithic analysis in terms of efficiency, while retaining comparable precision.
Disproving Termination of Non-Erasing Sole Combinatory Calculus with Tree Automata (Full Version)

Abstract:We study the termination of sole combinatory calculus, which consists of only one combinator. Specifically, the termination for non-erasing combinators is disproven by finding a desirable tree automaton with a SAT solver as done for term rewriting systems by Endrullis and Zantema. We improved their technique to apply to non-erasing sole combinatory calculus, in which it suffices to search for tree automata with a final sink state. Our method succeeds in disproving the termination of 8 combinators, whose termination has been an open problem.

Abstract:Tiwari (2004) proved that the termination problem of a class of linear programs (loops with linear loop conditions and updates) over the reals is decidable through Jordan forms and eigenvector computation. Braverman (2006) proved that it is also decidable over the integers. Following their work, we consider the termination problems of three more general classes of programs which are loops with linear updates and three kinds of polynomial loop conditions, i.e., strict constraints, non-strict constraints and both strict and non-strict constraints, respectively. First, we prove that the termination problems of such loops over the integers are all undecidable. Then, for each class we provide an algorithm to decide the termination of such programs over the reals. The algorithms are complete for those programs satisfying a property, Non-Zero Minimum.

Abstract:Termination is an important and well-studied property for logic programs. However, almost all approaches for automated termination analysis focus on definite logic programs, whereas real-world Prolog programs typically use the cut operator. We introduce a novel pre-processing method which automatically transforms Prolog programs into logic programs without cuts, where termination of the cut-free program implies termination of the original program. Hence after this pre-processing, any technique for proving termination of definite logic programs can be applied. We implemented this pre-processing in our termination prover AProVE and evaluated it successfully with extensive experiments.
