Abstract:In this paper we illustrate the rule for finding number of idempotents in the doubly stochastic matrix $D_n$ and also locate the idempotents for the semigroups $D_3$ and $D_4$. Further describe idempotent generated ideals of these semigroups and it is shown that these idempotent generated ideals form lattices.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a unitriangular matrix group of nilpotency class at most ten. We show that the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain the identity matrix?) and the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) are decidable in polynomial time for finitely generated subsemigroups of $G$. Our decidability results also hold when $G$ is an arbitrary finitely generated nilpotent group of class at most ten. This extends earlier work of Babai et al. on commutative matrix groups (SODA'96) and work of Bell et al. on $\mathsf{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$ (SODA'17). Furthermore, we formulate a sufficient condition for the generalization of our results to nilpotent groups of class $d > 10$. For every such $d$, we exhibit an effective procedure that verifies this condition in case it is true.

Semirigidity and the enumeration of nilpotent semigroups of index three

Abstract:There is strong evidence for the belief that `almost all' finite semigroups, whether we consider multiplication operations on a fixed set or their isomorphism classes, are nilpotent of index 3 (3-nilpotent for short). The only known method for counting all semigroups of given order is exhaustive testing, but formulae exist for the numbers of 3-nilpotent ones, and it is also known that `almost all' of these are rigid (have only trivial automorphism). Here we express the number of distinct 3-nilpotent semigroup operations on a fixed set of cardinality $n$ as a sum of Stirling numbers, and provide a new expression for the number of isomorphism classes of 3-nilpotent semigroups of cardinality $n$. We introduce a notion of semirigidity for semigroups (as a generalization of rigidity) and find computationally tractable formulae giving an upper bound for the number of pairwise non-isomorphic semirigid 3-nilpotent semigroups, and thus an improved lower bound for the number of all 3-nilpotent semigroups up to isomorphism. Analogous formulae are also developed for isomorphism classes such as commutative and self-dual semigroups, and for equivalence classes (isomorphic or anti-isomorphic). The method relies on an application of the theory of orbit counting in permutation group actions. Our main results are accompanied by tables containing values of these numbers and bounds up to $n=10$ with computations carried out in GAP (but perfectly feasible well beyond this value of $n$).

Bounded Ratios of Products of Principal Minors of Positive Definite Matrices

Abstract:Considered is the multiplicative semigroup of ratios of products of principal minors bounded over all positive definite matrices. A long history of literature identifies various elements of this semigroup, all of which lie in a sub-semigroup generated by Hadamard-Fischer inequalities. Via cone-theoretic techniques and the patterns of nullity among positive semidefinite matrices, a semigroup containing all bounded ratios is given. This allows the complete determination of the semigroup of bounded ratios for 4-by-4 positive definite matrices, whose 46 generators include ratios not implied by Hadamard-Fischer and ratios not bounded by 1. For n > 4 it is shown that the containment of semigroups is strict, but a generalization of nullity patterns, of which one example is given, is conjectured to provide a finite determination of all bounded ratios.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:We study the poset of normalized ideals of a numerical semigroup with multiplicity three. We show that this poset is always a lattice, and that two different numerical semigroups with multiplicity three have non-isomorphic posets of normalized ideals.

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph. The Laplacian matrix of G is the difference between the degree diagonal matrix and the (0, 1) adjacency matrix. Thus the doubly stochastic matrix of G is defined to be the inverse of the sum of its Laplacian matrix and the identity matrix. Merris in the paper [R. Merris, Doubly stochastic graph matrices II, Linear and Multilinear Algebra 45 (1998), 275-285] investigated some properties of the doubly stochastic matrix and proposed some direction for further study. In particular, he proposed two conjectures and two questions. In this paper, we survey some known results and new progress of the doubly stochastic matrix with special emphasis on the relations between entries of the doubly stochastic and the algebraic connectivity of G, which is used to study the two conjectures and two questions.

Abstract:In a celebrated paper of Marcus and Ree [M. Marcus, R. Ree. Diagonals of doubly stochastic matrices. Quart J Math Oxford Ser. 1959; 10(1):296–302], it was shown that if A=[aij] is an n×n doubly stochastic matrix, then there is a permutation σ∈Sn such that ∑i,j=1nai,j2≤∑i=1nai,σ(i) . Erdős asked for which doubly stochastic matrices the inequality is saturated. Although Marcus and Ree provided some insight for the set of solutions, the question appears to have fallen into oblivion. Our goal is to provide a complete answer in the particular, yet non-trivial, case when n = 3.

Abstract:We continue our study of exponent semigroups of rational matrices. Our main result is that the matricial dimension of a numerical semigroup is at most its multiplicity (the least generator), greatly improving upon the previous upper bound (the conductor). For many numerical semigroups, including all symmetric numerical semigroups, our upper bound is tight.

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to initiate the study of exponent semigroups for rational matrices. We prove that every numerical semigroup is the exponent semigroup of some rational matrix. We also obtain lower bounds on the size of such matrices and discuss the related class of power-integral matrices.

Abstract:A real symmetric matrix $M$ is completely positive semidefinite if it admits a Gram representation by (Hermitian) positive semidefinite matrices of any size $d$. The smallest such $d$ is called the (complex) completely positive semidefinite rank of $M$, and it is an open question whether there exists an upper bound on this number as a function of the matrix size. We construct completely positive semidefinite matrices of size $4k^2+2k+2$ with complex completely positive semidefinite rank $2^k$ for any positive integer $k$. This shows that if such an upper bound exists, it has to be at least exponential in the matrix size. For this we exploit connections to quantum information theory and we construct extremal bipartite correlation matrices of large rank. We also exhibit a class of completely positive matrices with quadratic (in terms of the matrix size) completely positive rank, but with linear completely positive semidefinite rank, and we make a connection to the existence of Hadamard matrices.

Generating Sets of Stochastic Matrices

Abstract:This paper introduces the concept of a generating set for stochastic matrices -- a subset of matrices whose repeated composition generates the entire set. Understanding such generating sets requires specifying the "indivisible elements" and "building blocks" within the set, which serve as fundamental components of the generation process. Expanding upon prior studies, we develop a framework that formalizes divisibility in the context of stochastic matrices. We provide a sufficient condition for divisibility that is shown to be necessary in dimension $n=3$, while for $n=2$, all stochastic matrices are shown to be divisible. Using these results, we construct generating sets for dimensions $2$ and $3$ by specifying the indivisible elements, and, importantly, we give an upper bound for the number of factors required from the generating set to produce the entire semigroup.

Abstract:A semigroup S is called rpp if all right principal ideals of S, regarded as S1-systems, are projective. An rpp semigroup S is said to be strongly rpp if for any a ∈ S, there exists a unique idempotent e such that [Formula: see text] and a = ea. In this paper, we show that a [Formula: see text]-simple strongly rpp semigroup can be expressed by a Rees matrix semigroup over a left cancellative monoid and conversely. Our result generalizes the classical theorem of Rees in 1940 and also amplifies the Rees theorem in semigroup given by Lallement and Petrich in 1969.

Abstract:Let R be an arbitrary ring. In this paper, the following statements are proved: (a) Each idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized if and only if each idempotent matrix over R has a characteristic vector. (b) An idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized under a similarity transformation if and only if it is equivalent to a diagonal matrix. (a) and (b) generalize Foster's and Steger's theorems to arbitrary rings. We give some new results about 0-similarity of idempotent matrices over R.

Determinants of Seidel Tournament Matrices

Abstract:The Seidel matrix of a tournament on $n$ players is an $n\times n$ skew-symmetric matrix with entries in $\{0, 1, -1\}$ that encapsulates the outcomes of the games in the given tournament. It is known that the determinant of an $n\times n$ Seidel matrix is $0$ if $n$ is odd, and is an odd perfect square if $n$ is even. This leads to the study of the set \[ \mathcal{D}(n)= \{ \sqrt{\det S}: \mbox{ $S$ is an $n\times n$ Seidel matrix}\}. \] This paper studies various questions about $\mathcal{D}(n)$. It is shown that $\mathcal{D}(n)$ is a proper subset of $\mathcal{D}(n+2)$ for every positive even integer, and every odd integer in the interval $[1, 1+n^2/2]$ is in $\mathcal{D}(n)$ for $n$ even. The expected value and variance of $\det S$ over the $n\times n$ Seidel matrices chosen uniformly at random is determined, and upper bounds on $\max \mathcal{D}(n)$ are given, and related to the Hadamard conjecture. Finally, it is shown that for infinitely many $n$, $\mathcal{D}(n)$ contains a gap (that is, there are odd integers $k<\ell <m$ such that $k, m \in \mathcal{D}(n)$ but $\ell \notin \mathcal{D}(n)$) and several properties of the characteristic polynomials of Seidel matrices are established.

Abstract:Permutation Matrices are a well known class of matrices which encode the elements of the symmetric group on $d$ elements as a square $d\times d$ matrix. Motivated by [4], we define a similar class of matrices which are a generalization of Permutation Matrices. We give explicit formulas for the multiplication of these matrices. Lastly, we discuss the spectral radius, eigenvalues, and periodicity before giving a form of Birkhoff-Von Neumann's Theorem for Left Stochastic Matrices.

Abstract:We prove that over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic different from $2$, the group algebra $R=\mathbb{K} D_\infty$ of the infinite dihedral group $D_\infty$ has exactly six conjugacy classes of involutions (equivalently, of idempotents). This allows us to recover the fact that $R$ admits exactly four non-isomorphic indecomposable projective modules of the form $eR$ where $e$ is an idempotent, a result that was first established by Berman and Buzási.
