Abstract:We describe maximal nilpotent subsemigroups of a given nilpotency class in the semigroup $\Omega_n$ of all $n\times n$ real matrices with non-negative coefficients and the semigroup $\mathbf{D}_n$ of all doubly stochastic real matrices.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a unitriangular matrix group of nilpotency class at most ten. We show that the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain the identity matrix?) and the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) are decidable in polynomial time for finitely generated subsemigroups of $G$. Our decidability results also hold when $G$ is an arbitrary finitely generated nilpotent group of class at most ten. This extends earlier work of Babai et al. on commutative matrix groups (SODA'96) and work of Bell et al. on $\mathsf{SL}(2, \mathbb{Z})$ (SODA'17). Furthermore, we formulate a sufficient condition for the generalization of our results to nilpotent groups of class $d > 10$. For every such $d$, we exhibit an effective procedure that verifies this condition in case it is true.

Recent advances in algorithmic problems for semigroups

Abstract:In this article we survey recent progress in the algorithmic theory of matrix semigroups. The main objective in this area of study is to construct algorithms that decide various properties of finitely generated subsemigroups of an infinite group $G$, often represented as a matrix group. Such problems might not be decidable in general. In fact, they gave rise to some of the earliest undecidability results in algorithmic theory. However, the situation changes when the group $G$ satisfies additional constraints. In this survey, we give an overview of the decidability and the complexity of several algorithmic problems in the cases where $G$ is a low-dimensional matrix group, or a group with additional structures such as commutativity, nilpotency and solvability.

Abstract:We continue our study of exponent semigroups of rational matrices. Our main result is that the matricial dimension of a numerical semigroup is at most its multiplicity (the least generator), greatly improving upon the previous upper bound (the conductor). For many numerical semigroups, including all symmetric numerical semigroups, our upper bound is tight.

Abstract:Cameron, et al. determined the maximum size of a null subsemigroup of the full transformation semigroup $\mathcal{T}(X)$ on a finite set $X$ and provided a description of the null semigroups that achieve that size. In this paper we extend the results on null semigroups (which are commutative) to commutative nilpotent semigroups. Using a mixture of algebraic and combinatorial techniques, we show that, when $X$ is finite, the maximum order of a commutative nilpotent subsemigroup of $\mathcal{T}(X)$ is equal to the maximum order of a null subsemigroup of $\mathcal{T}(X)$ and we prove that the largest commutative nilpotent subsemigroups of $\mathcal{T}(X)$ are the null semigroups previoulsy characterized by Cameron, et al..

Abstract:We say that a semigroup of matrices has a submultiplicative spectrum if the spectrum of the product of any two elements of the semigroup is contained in the product of the two spectra in question (as sets). In this note we explore an approximate version of this condition.

Abstract:In this paper we illustrate the rule for finding number of idempotents in the doubly stochastic matrix $D_n$ and also locate the idempotents for the semigroups $D_3$ and $D_4$. Further describe idempotent generated ideals of these semigroups and it is shown that these idempotent generated ideals form lattices.

Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to initiate the study of exponent semigroups for rational matrices. We prove that every numerical semigroup is the exponent semigroup of some rational matrix. We also obtain lower bounds on the size of such matrices and discuss the related class of power-integral matrices.

On unboundedness of some invariants of $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups

Abstract:In this article, we consider $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups in $\mathbb{N}^d$. We start with symmetric and almost symmetric $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups and prove that these notions are independent of term orders. We further investigate the conductor and the Apéry set of a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup with respect to a minimal extremal ray. Building upon this, we extend the notion of reduced type to $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups and study its extremal behavior. For all $d$ and fixed $e \geq 2d$, we give a class of $\mathcal{C}$-semigroups of embedding dimension $e$ such that both the type and the reduced type do not have any upper bound in terms of the embedding dimension. We further explore irreducible decompositions of a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup and give a lower bound on the irreducible components in an irreducible decomposition. Consequently, we deduce that for each positive integer $k$, there exists a $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup $S$ such that the number of irreducible components of $S$ is at least $k$. A $\mathcal{C}$-semigroup is known as a generalized numerical semigroup when the rational cone spanned by the semigroup is full. We classify all the symmetric generalized numerical semigroups of embedding dimension $2d+1$. Consequently, when $d>1$, we deduce that a generalized numerical semigroup of embedding dimension $2d+1$ is almost symmetric if and only if it is symmetric.

Abstract:Regular abelian semigroups are isomorphic to a direct product of an abelian group and a rectangular band (Warne, 1994). Seeking for a similar result for nilpotency, solvability and supernilpotency of regular semigroups, we obtain that analogous statement is true only in orthodox semigroups. We provide an example that shows that the same does not have to be true in regular semigroups that are not orthodox.

The Non-Nilpotent Graph of a Semigroup

Abstract:We associate a graph ${\mathcal N}_{S}$ with a semigroup $S$ (called the upper non-nilpotent graph of $S$). The vertices of this graph are the elements of $S$ and two vertices are adjacent if they generate a semigroup that is not nilpotent (in the sense of Malcev). In case $S$ is a group this graph has been introduced by A. Abdollahi and M. Zarrin and some remarkable properties have been proved. The aim of this paper is to study this graph (and some related graphs, such as the non-commuting graph) and to discover the algebraic structure of $S$ determined by the associated graph. It is shown that if a finite semigroup $S$ has empty upper non-nilpotent graph then $S$ is positively Engel. On the other hand, a semigroup has a complete upper non-nilpotent graph if and only if it is a completely simple semigroup that is a band. One of the main results states that if all connected ${\mathcal N}_{S}$-components of a semigroup $S$ are complete (with at least two elements) then $S$ is a band that is a semilattice of its connected components and, moreover, $S$ is an iterated total ideal extension of its connected components. We also show that some graphs, such as a cycle $C_{n}$ on $n$ vertices (with $n\geq 5$), are not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup. Also, there is precisely one graph on 4 vertices that is not the upper non-nilpotent graph of a semigroup with 4 elements. This work also is a continuation of earlier work by Okniński, Riley and the first named author on (Malcev) nilpotent semigroups.

Abstract:We extend the notion of convex-cyclicity for matrices to that of convex-cyclicity for abelian semigroups of matrices on . We say that an abelian semigroup G of matrices on is convex-cyclic if there exists such that the convex hull of the orbit G ( x ) of x under G is dense in . We provide an effective method for checking that a given abelian semigroup is convex-cyclic. In particular we give a spectral characterization of convex-cyclicity for finitely generated abelian semigroups of diagonalizable matrices. We also obtain an example of a convex-cyclic abelian semigroup which does not contain a convex-cyclic matrix. We prove that there exists an abelian semigroup of matrices on which is somewhere convex-cyclic but not convex-cyclic. This solves two questions of Rezaei in (Linear Algebra Appl 438:4190–4203, 2013) and Feldman and McGuire in (Oper Matrices 12(2):465–492, 2017) respectively. On the other hand, we provide the link between -hypercyclicity and convex-cyclicity for abelian semigroups of matrices on for every .

This is a well-known result in group theory. In this paper, we prove two analogous theorems on matrices, which have independence significance. Specifically, let [math] be a given positive integer and [math] a complex square matrix satisfying that (i) all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and (ii) [math]; then [math] has a unique [math]-th root [math] with [math], all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and moreover there is a polynomial [math] with [math]. Semirigidity and the enumeration of nilpotent semigroups of index three

Abstract:There is strong evidence for the belief that `almost all' finite semigroups, whether we consider multiplication operations on a fixed set or their isomorphism classes, are nilpotent of index 3 (3-nilpotent for short). The only known method for counting all semigroups of given order is exhaustive testing, but formulae exist for the numbers of 3-nilpotent ones, and it is also known that `almost all' of these are rigid (have only trivial automorphism). Here we express the number of distinct 3-nilpotent semigroup operations on a fixed set of cardinality $n$ as a sum of Stirling numbers, and provide a new expression for the number of isomorphism classes of 3-nilpotent semigroups of cardinality $n$. We introduce a notion of semirigidity for semigroups (as a generalization of rigidity) and find computationally tractable formulae giving an upper bound for the number of pairwise non-isomorphic semirigid 3-nilpotent semigroups, and thus an improved lower bound for the number of all 3-nilpotent semigroups up to isomorphism. Analogous formulae are also developed for isomorphism classes such as commutative and self-dual semigroups, and for equivalence classes (isomorphic or anti-isomorphic). The method relies on an application of the theory of orbit counting in permutation group actions. Our main results are accompanied by tables containing values of these numbers and bounds up to $n=10$ with computations carried out in GAP (but perfectly feasible well beyond this value of $n$).

On a probabilistic problem on finite semigroups

Abstract:In this paper we deal with the following problem: how does the structure of a finite semigroup $S$ depend on the probability that two elements selected at random from $S$, with replacement, define the same inner right translation of $S$. We solve a subcase of this problem. As the main result of the paper, we show how to construct not necessarily finite medial semigroups in which the index of the kernel of the right regular representation equals two.

Abstract:We describe the structure of simple inverse Hausdorff semitopological $\omega$-semigroups with compact maximal subgroups. In particular we show that if $S$ is a simple inverse Hausdorff semitopological $\omega$-semigroups with compact maximal subgroups, then $S$ is topologically isomorphic to the Bruck--Reilly extension $\left(\textbf{BR}(T,\theta),\tau_{\textbf{BR}}^{\oplus}\right)$ of a finite semilattice $T=\left[E;G_\alpha,\varphi_{\alpha,\beta}\right]$ of compact groups $G_\alpha$ in the class of topological inverse semigroups, where $\tau_{\textbf{BR}}^{\oplus}$ is the sum direct topology on $\textbf{BR}(T,\theta)$. Also we prove that every Hausdorff locally compact shift-continuous topology on the simple inverse Hausdorff semitopological $\omega$-semigroups with compact maximal subgroups with adjoined zero is either compact or discrete.

Abstract:We generalize a fundamental theorem on positive matrix semigroups stating that each component is either strictly positive for all times or identically zero ("Lévy's Theorem"). Our proof of this fact that does not require the matrices to be continuous at time zero. We also provide a formulation of this theorem in the terminology of positive operator semigroups on sequence spaces.

Abstract:<p>Nonlinear matrix equations play a crucial role in science and engineering problems. However, solutions of nonlinear matrix equations cannot, in general, be given analytically. One standard way of solving nonlinear matrix equations is to apply the fixed-point iteration with usually only the linear convergence rate. To advance the existing methods, we exploit in this work one type of semigroup property and use this property to propose a technique for solving the equations with the speed of convergence of any desired order. We realize our way by starting with examples of solving the scalar equations and, also, connect this method with some well-known equations including, but not limited to, the Stein matrix equation, the generalized eigenvalue problem, the generalized nonlinear matrix equation, the discrete-time algebraic Riccati equations to express the capacity of this method.</p>
