Abstract:We give the very first example of a simple $2-(81,6,2)$ design. Its points are the elements of the elementary abelian group of order 81 and each block is the union of two parallel lines of the 4-dimensional geometry over the field of order 3. Hence it is also additive.

Abstract:The two basic equations satisfied by the parameters of a block design define a three-dimensional affine variety $\mathcal{D}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{5}$. A point of $\mathcal{D}$ that is not in some sense trivial lies on four lines lying in $\mathcal{D}$. These lines provide a degree of organization for certain general classes of designs, and the paper is devoted to exploring properties of the lines. Several examples of families of designs that seem naturally to follow the lines are presented.

Abstract:A $3$-$(v,\{4,6\},1)$ design is a configuration of $v$ points and a collection of $4$- and $6$-element subsets called blocks, that jointly contain every 3-element subset exactly once. Using an exhaustive computer search on $v\leq 28$ points we investigate the $3$-$(v,\{4,6\},1)$ designs that have a transitive automorphism group and where the blocks of size 6 form a 2-class symmetric design. A 2-class symmetric design with parameters $(v,k{;}\lambda_1,\lambda_2{;}\delta_1,\delta_2)$ is a set-system on $v$ points and $v$ blocks of size $k$, where every pair of points are in $\lambda_1$ or $\lambda_2$ blocks and every pair of blocks intersect in $\delta_1$ or $\delta_2$ points. The 2-class symmetric designs include biplanes, semi-biplanes, and 2-class symmetric partially balanced incomplete block designs.

Abstract:We construct two flag-transitive designs with the parameters of the title, and prove that these are the only two examples. One is point-primitive and related to unitary geometry, while the other is point-imprimitive and constructed from a 1-dimensional affine space. This classification may be contrasted with a construction by Mathon and Spence in 1996 of more than 3,700 designs with these parameters, almost a third of which had a trivial automorphism group.

Abstract:We consider $2$-designs which admit a group of automorphisms that is flag-transitive and leaves invariant a chain of nontrivial point-partitions. We build on our recent work on $2$-designs which are block-transitive but not necessarily flag-transitive. In particular we use the concept of the ``array'' of a point subset with respect to the chain of point-partitions; the array describes the distribution of the points in the subset among the classes of each partition. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the array in order for the subset to be a block of such a design. By explicit construction we show that for any $s \geq 2$, there are infinitely many $2$-designs admitting a flag-transitive group that preserves an invariant chain of point-partitions of length $s$. Moreover an exhaustive computer search, using {\sc Magma}, seeking designs with $e_1e_2e_3$ points (where each $e_i\leq 50$) and a partition chain of length $s=3$, produced $57$ such flag-transitive designs, among which only three designs arise from our construction -- so there is still much to learn.

Abstract:More than 30 years ago, Delandtsheer and Doyen showed that the automorphism group of a block-transitive 2-design, with blocks of size k , could leave invariant a nontrivial point-partition, but only if the number of points was bounded in terms of k . Since then examples have been found where there are two nontrivial point partitions, either forming a chain of partitions, or forming a grid structure on the point set. We show, by construction of infinite families of designs, that there is no limit on the length of a chain of invariant point partitions for a block-transitive 2-design. We introduce the notion of an 'array' of a set of points which describes how the set interacts with parts of the various partitions, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the 'array' of a point set, relative to a partition chain, for it to be a block of such a design.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for a non-trivial quasi-symmetric $2$-design $\mathcal{D}$ with two block intersection numbers $x=0$ and $2\leq y\leq10$, if $G\leq \mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{D})$ is flag-transitive and point-primitive, then $G$ is either of affine type or almost simple type. Moreover, we prove that the socle of $G$ cannot be an alternating group. If the socle of $G$ is a sporadic group, then $\mathcal{D}$ and $G$ must be one of the following: $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(12,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,3$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{11}$, or $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-$(22,6,5)$ design with block intersection numbers $0,2$ and $G=\mathrm{M}_{22}$ or $\mathrm{M}_{22}:2$.

Abstract:The group $PGL(2,q)$ acts $3$-transitively on the projective line $GF(q) \cup \{\infty\}$. Thus, an orbit of its action on the $k$-subsets of the projective line is the block set of a $3$-$(q+1,k,\lambda)$ design. We find the parameters of the designs formed by the orbit of a block of the form $\langle \theta^r \rangle$ or $\langle \theta^r \rangle \cup \{ 0\}$, where $\theta$ is a primitive element of $GF(q)$.

Abstract:We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples arise from affine geometry and the point-line geometry of projective spaces, as well as several sporadic examples.

Abstract:We study $n$-dimensional matrices with $\{0,1\}$-entries ($n$-cubes) such that all their $2$-dimensional slices are incidence matrices of symmetric designs. A known construction of these objects obtained from difference sets is generalized so that the resulting $n$-cubes may have inequivalent slices. For suitable parameters, they can be transformed into $n$-dimensional Hadamard matrices with this property. In contrast, previously known constructions of $n$-dimensional designs all give examples with equivalent slices.

Abstract:Let $n=2^k-1$ and $m=2^{k-2}$ for a certain $k\ge 3$. Consider the point-line geometry of $2m$-element subsets of an $n$-element set. Maximal singular subspaces of this geometry correspond to binary simplex codes of dimension $k$. For $k\ge 4$ the associated collinearity graph contains maximal cliques different from maximal singular subspaces. We investigate maximal cliques corresponding to symmetric $(n,2m,m)$-designs. The main results concern the case $k=4$ and give a geometric interpretation of the five well-known symmetric $(15,8,4)$-designs.

Abstract:For a t-design D(t≥2) transitivity of a group G of automorphisms on the blocks (or lines) of D implies transitivity on points. Delandtsheer and Doyen proved in 1989 that if in addition the group G leaves invariant a non-trivial partition of the v points, that is, G is point-imprimitive, then v is bounded above by ((2k) - 1)2, where k is the block size. Such designs may be 2-designs, or 3-designs, and we discuss a recent proof by Mann and Tuan of a conjecture of Cameron and the author that for a block-transitive, point-imprimitive 3-design, the number v of points is bounded above by (2k) + 1. The subclass of line-transitive pointimprimitive 2-designs that are linear spaces have also received much attention: apart from finite projective planes, there are exactly 469 known examples and they all have one of two sets of parameters: (v, k) = (91,6) or (729, 8). Efforts to obtain restrictions on the parameters and the structure of the group G may lead to new constructions of line-transitive, point-imprimitive linear spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we study $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting a flag-transitive almost simple automorphism group with socle a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type, and we prove that such a $2$-design does not exist. In conclusion, we present a classification of $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism groups of almost simple type, which states that such a $2$-design belongs to an infinite family of $2$-designs with parameter set $((3^n-1)/2,3,2)$ and $X=PSL_n(3)$ for some $n\geq 3$, or it is isomorphic to the $2$-design with parameter set $(6,3,2)$, $(7,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(11,5,2)$, $(28,7,2)$, $(28,3,2)$, $(36,6,2)$, $(126,6,2)$ or $(176,8,2)$.

Abstract:A design is said to be super‐simple if the intersection of any two blocks has at most two elements. A design with index tλ is said to be λt ‐decomposable, if its blocks can be partitioned into nonempty collections Bi , 1≤i≤t , such that each Bi with the point set forms a design with index λ . In this paper, it is proved that there exists a 23 ‐decomposable super‐simple (v,4,6) ‐BIBD (balanced incomplete block design) if and only if v≥16 and v≡1(mod3) .

Symmetric 2$-$(36,15,6) designs with an automorphism of order two

Abstract:The parameters 2-(36,15,6) are the smallest parameters of symmetric designs for which a complete classification up to isomorphism is yet unknown. Bouyukliev, Fack and Winne classified all 2-$(36,15,6)$ designs that admit an automorphism of odd prime order, and gave a partial classification of such designs that admit an automorphism of order 2. In this paper, we give the classification of all symmetric 2-$(36,15,6)$ designs that admit an automorphism of order two. It is shown that there are exactly $1 547 701$ nonisomorphic such designs, $135 779$ of which are self-dual designs. The ternary linear codes spanned by the incidence matrices of these designs are computed. Among these codes, there are near-extremal self-dual codes with previously unknown weight distributions.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a switching for 2-designs. We illustrate this method by applying it to some symmetric (64,28,12) designs. In that way we obtain six new symmetric (64,28,12) designs. Further, we show that this type of switching can be applied to any symmetric design related to a Bush-type Hadamard matrix.

Abstract:It was shown in 1989 by Delandtsheer and Doyen that, for a $2$-design with $v$ points and block size $k$, a block-transitive group of automorphisms can be point-imprimitive (that is, leave invariant a nontrivial partition of the point set) only if $v$ is small enough relative to $k$. Recently, exploiting a construction of block-transitive point-imprimitive $2$-designs given by Cameron and the last author, four of the authors studied $2$-designs admitting a block-transitive group that preserves a two-dimensional grid structure on the point set. Here we consider the case where there a block-transitive group preserves a multidimensional grid structure on points. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such $2$-designs to exist in terms of the parameters of the grid, and certain `array parameters' which describe a subset of points (which will be a block of the design). Using this criterion, we construct explicit examples of $2$-designs for grids of dimensions three and four, and pose several open questions.

Enumeration of Row-Column Designs

Abstract:We computationally completely enumerate a number of types of row-column designs up to isotopism, including double, sesqui and triple arrays as known from the literature, and two newly introduced types that we call mono arrays and AO-arrays. We calculate autotopism group sizes for the designs we generate. For larger parameter values, where complete enumeration is not feasible, we generate examples of some of the designs, and generate exhaustive lists of admissible parameters. For some admissible parameter sets, we prove non-existence results. We also give some explicit constructions of sesqui arrays, mono arrays and AO-arrays, and investigate connections to Youden rectangles and binary pseud Youden designs.
