Abstract:In this paper we introduce a switching for 2-designs. We illustrate this method by applying it to some symmetric (64,28,12) designs. In that way we obtain six new symmetric (64,28,12) designs. Further, we show that this type of switching can be applied to any symmetric design related to a Bush-type Hadamard matrix.

Abstract:A switching method is a graph operation that results in cospectral graphs (graphs with the same spectrum). Work by Wang and Xu [Discrete Math. 310 (2010)] suggests that most cospectral graphs with cospectral complements can be constructed using regular orthogonal matrices of level 2, which has relevance for Haemers' conjecture. We present two new switching methods and several combinatorial and geometrical reformulations of existing switching operations of level 2. We also introduce the concept of reducibility and use it to classify all irreducible switching methods that correspond to a conjugation with a regular orthogonal matrix of level 2 with one nontrivial indecomposable block, up to switching sets of size 12, extending previous results.

Abstract:Local operations of combinatorial structures (graphs, Hadamard matrices, codes, designs) that maintain the basic parameters unaltered, have been widely used in the literature under the name of switching. We show an equivalence between two switching methods to construct inequivalent Hadamard matrices, which were proposed by Orrick [SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 2008], and the switching method for constructing cospectral graphs which was introduced by Godsil and McKay [Aequationes Mathematicae, 1982].

Abstract:The parameters 2-(36,15,6) are the smallest parameters of symmetric designs for which a complete classification up to isomorphism is yet unknown. Bouyukliev, Fack and Winne classified all 2-$(36,15,6)$ designs that admit an automorphism of odd prime order, and gave a partial classification of such designs that admit an automorphism of order 2. In this paper, we give the classification of all symmetric 2-$(36,15,6)$ designs that admit an automorphism of order two. It is shown that there are exactly $1 547 701$ nonisomorphic such designs, $135 779$ of which are self-dual designs. The ternary linear codes spanned by the incidence matrices of these designs are computed. Among these codes, there are near-extremal self-dual codes with previously unknown weight distributions.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that if $\mathcal{D}$ is a $2$-design with $k=7$ admitting flag-transitive almost simple automorphism group with socle an alternating group, then $\mathcal{D}$ is $PG_{2}(3,2)$ with parameter set $(15,7,3)$ and $G=A_7$, or $\mathcal{D}$ is the $2$-design with parameter set $(55, 7, 1680)$ and $G=A_{11}$ or $S_{11}$.

Abstract:We classify the pairwise transitive 2-designs, that is, 2-designs such that a group of automorphisms is transitive on the following five sets of ordered pairs: point-pairs, incident point-block pairs, non-incident point-block pairs, intersecting block-pairs and non-intersecting block-pairs. These 2-designs fall into two classes: the symmetric ones and the quasisymmetric ones. The symmetric examples include the symmetric designs from projective geometry, the 11-point biplane, the Higman-Sims design, and designs of points and quadratic forms on symplectic spaces. The quasisymmetric examples arise from affine geometry and the point-line geometry of projective spaces, as well as several sporadic examples.

Abstract:A scheme based on combined switching surface is introduced. Based on the characters of shifting switching surface (SSS) and conventional switching surface (CSS), a modified exponent reaching law is adopted. The state of system is designed initially staying at the SSS, and then moving to the stable point. As soon as the state moves into the converge range of the CSS, the parameters of the CSS will be determined by the state, and the state will turn to stay at the CSS and move to zero state. By using the scheme of combined switching surfaces, the state always stays on the switching surfaces, and so robustness of systems is guaranteed. Moreover, this scheme could be used in high-order systems. Simulation results show that the scheme is effective.

Abstract:We give the very first example of a simple $2-(81,6,2)$ design. Its points are the elements of the elementary abelian group of order 81 and each block is the union of two parallel lines of the 4-dimensional geometry over the field of order 3. Hence it is also additive.

Abstract:A $3$-$(v,\{4,6\},1)$ design is a configuration of $v$ points and a collection of $4$- and $6$-element subsets called blocks, that jointly contain every 3-element subset exactly once. Using an exhaustive computer search on $v\leq 28$ points we investigate the $3$-$(v,\{4,6\},1)$ designs that have a transitive automorphism group and where the blocks of size 6 form a 2-class symmetric design. A 2-class symmetric design with parameters $(v,k{;}\lambda_1,\lambda_2{;}\delta_1,\delta_2)$ is a set-system on $v$ points and $v$ blocks of size $k$, where every pair of points are in $\lambda_1$ or $\lambda_2$ blocks and every pair of blocks intersect in $\delta_1$ or $\delta_2$ points. The 2-class symmetric designs include biplanes, semi-biplanes, and 2-class symmetric partially balanced incomplete block designs.

Abstract:Let $n=2^k-1$ and $m=2^{k-2}$ for a certain $k\ge 3$. Consider the point-line geometry of $2m$-element subsets of an $n$-element set. Maximal singular subspaces of this geometry correspond to binary simplex codes of dimension $k$. For $k\ge 4$ the associated collinearity graph contains maximal cliques different from maximal singular subspaces. We investigate maximal cliques corresponding to symmetric $(n,2m,m)$-designs. The main results concern the case $k=4$ and give a geometric interpretation of the five well-known symmetric $(15,8,4)$-designs.

Abstract:This correspondence presents the switch strategies for switch-type hybrid hard decision decoding algorithms for regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. After the piecewise analysis of extrinsic information transfer functions for Gallager decoding algorithm B (GB), the normalized switch scheme (NSS), for which the majority-based algorithms and GB are two examples, is proposed. Then, several other examples of NSSs are presented and their convergence properties are analyzed based on the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) functions. In simulations, the proposed NSSs show meaningful performance improvements and less sensitivity to channel parameter underestimations compared with GB for small and moderate block length codes.
Infinite families $2$-designs from binary projective three-weight codes

Abstract:Combinatorial designs are closely related to linear codes. In recent year, there are a lot of $t$-designs constructed from certain linear codes. In this paper, we aim to construct $2$-designs from binary three-weight codes. For any binary three-weight code $\mathcal{C}$ with length $n$, let $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})$ be the number of codewords in $\mathcal{C}$ with Hamming weight $n$, then we show that $\mathcal{C}$ holds $2$-designs when $\mathcal{C}$ is projective and $A_{n}(\mathcal{C})=1$. Furthermore, by extending some certain binary projective two-weight codes and basing on the defining set method, we construct two classes of binary projective three-weight codes which are suitable for holding $2$-designs.

Abstract:Starting from the problems of multi-valued logic circuits using voltage as signal which are designed with cascade switches, two methods for converting cascade switches to parallel switches which are suitable for ECL circuits design were proposed. Using these methods, several ternary ECL circuits with parallel switches were designed, and the design examples show the two methods have the characteristics of simple and normative. The simulation result using PSPICE shows that the designed circuits not only have the correct logic functions, but also have smaller propagation delay than the counterparts designed with cascade switches.

Abstract:We study $n$-dimensional matrices with $\{0,1\}$-entries ($n$-cubes) such that all their $2$-dimensional slices are incidence matrices of symmetric designs. A known construction of these objects obtained from difference sets is generalized so that the resulting $n$-cubes may have inequivalent slices. For suitable parameters, they can be transformed into $n$-dimensional Hadamard matrices with this property. In contrast, previously known constructions of $n$-dimensional designs all give examples with equivalent slices.

Abstract:In this article, we study $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting a flag-transitive almost simple automorphism group with socle a finite simple exceptional group of Lie type, and we prove that such a $2$-design does not exist. In conclusion, we present a classification of $2$-designs with $\lambda=2$ admitting flag-transitive and point-primitive automorphism groups of almost simple type, which states that such a $2$-design belongs to an infinite family of $2$-designs with parameter set $((3^n-1)/2,3,2)$ and $X=PSL_n(3)$ for some $n\geq 3$, or it is isomorphic to the $2$-design with parameter set $(6,3,2)$, $(7,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(10,4,2)$, $(11,5,2)$, $(28,7,2)$, $(28,3,2)$, $(36,6,2)$, $(126,6,2)$ or $(176,8,2)$.

Abstract:We consider $2$-designs which admit a group of automorphisms that is flag-transitive and leaves invariant a chain of nontrivial point-partitions. We build on our recent work on $2$-designs which are block-transitive but not necessarily flag-transitive. In particular we use the concept of the ``array'' of a point subset with respect to the chain of point-partitions; the array describes the distribution of the points in the subset among the classes of each partition. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the array in order for the subset to be a block of such a design. By explicit construction we show that for any $s \geq 2$, there are infinitely many $2$-designs admitting a flag-transitive group that preserves an invariant chain of point-partitions of length $s$. Moreover an exhaustive computer search, using {\sc Magma}, seeking designs with $e_1e_2e_3$ points (where each $e_i\leq 50$) and a partition chain of length $s=3$, produced $57$ such flag-transitive designs, among which only three designs arise from our construction -- so there is still much to learn.

Abstract:We consider birack and switch colorings of braids. We define a switch structure on the set of permutation representations of the braid group and consider when such a representation is a switch automorphism. We define quiver-valued invariants of braids using finite switches and biracks and use these to categorify the birack 2-cocycle invariant for braids. We obtain new polynomial invariants of braids via decategorification of these quivers.
