Abstract:Let $(N,\Phi)$ be a circular Ferrero pair. We define the disk with center $b$ and radius $a$, $\mathcal{D}(a;b)$, as \[\mathcal{D}(a;b)=\{x\in \Phi(r)+c\mid r\neq 0,\ b\in \Phi(r)+c,\ |(\Phi(r)+c)\cap (\Phi(a)+b)|=1\}.\] We prove that in the field-generated case there are many analogies with the Euclidean geometry. Moreover, if $\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{D}}$ is the set of all disks, then, in some interesting cases, we show that the incidence structure $(N,\mathcal{B}^{\mathcal{D}},\in)$ is actually a balanced incomplete block design.

Abstract:Planar nearrings play an important role in nearring theory, both from the structural side as being close to generalised nearfields, as well as from an applications perspective, in geometry and designs. We investigate the distributive elements of planar nearrings. If a planar nearring has nonzero distributive elements, then it is an extension of its zero multiplier part by an abelian group. In the case that there are distributive elements that are not zero multipliers, then this extension splits, giving an explicit description of the nearring. This generalises the structure of planar rings. We provide a family of examples where this does not occur, the distributive elements being precisely the zero multipliers. We apply this knowledge to the question of determining the generalized center of planar nearrings as well as finding new proofs of other older results.

Abstract:Recently, there has been great interest in the application of composition laws to problems in enumerative geometry. Using the moduli space of stable maps, we compute the number of irreducible, reduced, nodal, degree-$d$ genus-$2$ plane curves whose normalization has a fixed complex structure and which pass through $3d - 2$ general points in $\Bbb P^2$.

Abstract:In this paper we study the connections between cyclic presentations of groups and branched cyclic coverings of (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every n-fold strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot admits a cyclic presentation for the fundamental group encoded by a Heegaard diagram of genus n.

Abstract:We introduce orthogonal ring patterns consisting of pairs of concentric circles generalizing circle patterns. We show that orthogonal ring patterns are governed by the same equation as circle patterns. For every ring pattern there exists a one parameter family of patterns that interpolates between a circle pattern and its dual. We construct ring pattern analogues of the Doyle spiral, Erf and $z^{\alpha}$ functions. We also derive a variational principle and compute ring patterns based on Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.

Abstract:We consider the problem of untangling a given (non-planar) straight-line circular drawing δG of an outerplanar graph G=(V,E) into a planar straight-line circular drawing of G by shifting a minimum number of vertices to a new position on the circle. For an outerplanar graph G , it is obvious that such a crossing-free circular drawing always exists and we define the circular shifting number shift∘(δG) as the minimum number of vertices that are required to be shifted in order to resolve all crossings of δG . We show that the problem Circular Untangling , asking whether shift∘(δG)≤K for a given integer K , is NP -complete. For n -vertex outerplanar graphs, we obtain a tight upper bound of shift∘(δG)≤n−⌊n−2⌋−2 . Moreover, we study the Circular Untangling for almost-planar circular drawings, in which a single edge is involved in all of the crossings. For this problem, we provide a tight upper bound shift∘(δG)≤⌊n2⌋−1 and present an O(n2) -time algorithm to compute the circular shifting number of almost-planar drawings.

In this paper, we prove the existence and arrangement structure of rings passing through superstable parameters and escape parameters and lying outside dividing ring in the parameter plane of the McMullen family Fλ(z) = zn + λ zd 1 n + 1 d < 1,z ∈C̄,λ ∈ C∖{0}. The dividing ring [math] is a simple closed curve passing through [math] superstable parameters and the same number of escape parameters. Ring [math] is a simple closed curve lying outside ring [math] and meeting with [math] at [math] points and passing [math] superstable parameters and [math] escape parameters. For [math], there exist [math] rings [math] and each ring passes through [math] superstable parameters and the same number of escape parameters. Each ring [math] is characterized by a unique symbolic sequence of length [math] representing the property of critical orbit corresponding to a parameter lying on it. [math] meets with one [math]. There are [math] rings [math] meeting with [math] and of those, [math] and [math] rings lie outside and inside ring [math] meeting with [math], respectively.

Abstract:We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.

Abstract:We show that for smooth complex projective varieties the most general combinations of chern numbers that are invariant under the K-equivalence relation consist of the complex elliptic genera. Combined with a recent result of Totaro, we deduce that up to complex cobordism any K-equivalence can be decomposed into a sequence of classical flops.

On a classification of planar functions in characteristic three

Abstract:Planar functions are functions over a finite field that have optimal combinatorial properties and they have applications in several branches of mathematics, including algebra, projective geometry and cryptography. There are two relevant equivalence relations for planar functions, that are isotopic equivalence and CCZ-equivalence. Classification of planar functions is performed via CCZ-equivalence which arises from cryptographic applications. In the case of quadratic planar functions, isotopic equivalence, coming from connections to commutative semifields, is more general than CCZ-equivalence and isotopic transformations can be considered as a construction method providing up to two CCZ-inequivalent mappings. In this paper, we first survey known infinite classes and sporadic cases of planar functions up to CCZ-equivalence, aiming to exclude equivalent cases and to identify those with the potential to provide additional functions via isotopic equivalence. In particular, for fields of order $3^n$ with $n\le 11$, we completely resolve if and when isotopic equivalence provides different CCZ-classes for all currently known planar functions. Further, we perform an extensive computational investigation on some of these fields and find seven new sporadic planar functions over $\mathbb{F}_{3^6}$ and two over $\mathbb{F}_{3^9}$. Finally, we give new simple quadrinomial representatives for the Dickson family of planar functions.

On Projective Planes of Order 16 Associated with 1-rotational 2-(52, 4, 1) Designs

Abstract:A maximal arc of degree k in a finite projective plane P of order q = ks is a set of (q-s+1)k points that meets every line of P in either k or 0 points. The collection of the nonempty intersections of a maximal arc with the lines of P is a resolvable Steiner 2-((q-s+1)k, k, 1) design. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a resolvable Steiner 2- design to be embeddable as a maximal arc in a projective plane were proved recently in [8]. Steiner designs associated with maximal arcs in the known projective planes of order 16 were analyzed in [6], where it was shown that some of the associated designs are embeddable in two non-isomorphic planes. Using MAGMA, we conducted an analysis to ascertain whether any of the 22 non-isomorphic 1-rotational 2-(52,4,1) designs, previously classified in [3], could be embedded in maximal arcs of degree 4 within projective planes of order 16. This paper presents a summary of our findings, revealing that precisely only one out of the the twenty-two 1-rotational designs from [3] is embeddable in a plane of order 16, being the Desarguesian plane P G(2, 16).

A Degree Bound for Planar Functions

Abstract:Using Stickelberger's theorem on Gauss sums, we show that if $F$ is a planar function on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, then for all non-zero functions $G : \mathbb{F}_q \to \mathbb{F}_q$, we have \begin{equation*} \mathrm{deg } \ G \circ F - \mathrm{deg } \ G \le \frac{n(p-1)}{2}\,, \end{equation*} where $q = p^n$ with $p$ a prime and $n$ a positive integer, and $\mathrm{deg } \ F$ is the algebraic degree of $F$, i.e., the degree of the corresponding multivariate polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This bound leads to a simpler proof of the classification of planar polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and planar monomials over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$. As a new result, using the same degree bound, we complete the classification of planar monomials for all $n = 2^k$ with $p>5$ and $k$ a non-negative integer. Finally, we state a conjecture on the sum of the base-$p$ digits of integers modulo $q-1$ that implies the complete classification of planar monomials over finite fields of characteristic $p>5$.

Irrational rotations and 2-filling rays

Abstract:We study a skew product transformation associated to an irrational rotation of the circle [0,1]/~. This skew product keeps track of the number of times an orbit of the rotation lands in the two complementary intervals of {0,1/2} in the circle. We show that under certain conditions on the continued fraction expansion of the irrational number defining the rotation, the skew product transformation has certain dense orbits. This is in spite of the presence of numerous non-dense orbits. We use this to construct laminations on infinite type surfaces with exotic properties. In particular, we show that for every infinite type surface with an isolated planar end, there is an infinite clique of 2-filling rays based at that end. These 2-filling rays are relevant to Bavard--Walker's loop graphs.

Abstract:We present various new constructions and bounds for arcs in projective Hjelmslev planes over finite chain rings of nilpotency index 2. For the chain rings of cardinality at most 25 we give updated tables with the best known upper and lower bounds for the maximum size of such arcs.

Abstract:Planar functions, introduced by Dembowski and Ostrom, have attracted much attention in the last decade. As shown in this paper, we present a new class of planar functions of the form $\operatorname{Tr}(ax^{q+1})+\ell(x^2)$ on an extension of the finite field $\mathbb F_{q^n}/\mathbb F_q$. Specifically, we investigate those functions on $\mathbb F_{q^2}/\mathbb F_q$ and construct several typical kinds of planar functions. We also completely characterize them on $\mathbb F_{q^3}/\mathbb F_q$. When the degree of extension is higher, it will be proved that such planar functions do not exist given certain conditions.

Abstract:For a smooth curve B over a field k = (k) over bar with char(k) = p, for every complete intersection X-B in B x(Speck) P-k(n) of type (d(1), ..., d(c)), we prove weak approximation of adelic points of X-B by k(B)-points at all places of (strong) potentially good reduction, if the Fano index is >= 2 and if p > max(d(1 ),..., d(c)). This also applies to specializations of complex Fano manifolds with Picard rank 1 and Fano index 1 away from "bad primes".

Abstract:Reidl et al. (Eur J Comb 75:152–168, 2019) characterized graph classes of bounded expansion as follows: A class closed under subgraphs has bounded expansion if and only if there exists a function such that for every graph , every nonempty subset A of vertices in G and every nonnegative integer r , the number of distinct intersections between A and a ball of radius r in G is at most f ( r ) | A |. When has bounded expansion, the function f ( r ) coming from existing proofs is typically exponential. In the special case of planar graphs, it was conjectured by Sokołowski (Electron J Comb 30(2):P2.3, 2023) that f ( r ) could be taken to be a polynomial. In this paper, we prove this conjecture: For every nonempty subset A of vertices in a planar graph G and every nonnegative integer r , the number of distinct intersections between A and a ball of radius r in G is . We also show that a polynomial bound holds more generally for every proper minor-closed class of graphs.

$K$-rings of wonderful varieties and matroids

Abstract:We study the $K$-ring of the wonderful variety of a hyperplane arrangement and give a combinatorial presentation that depends only on the underlying matroid. We use this combinatorial presentation to define the $K$-ring of an arbitrary loopless matroid. We construct an exceptional isomorphism, with integer coefficients, to the Chow ring of the matroid that satisfies a Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch-type formula, generalizing a recent construction of Berget, Eur, Spink, and Tseng for the permutohedral variety (the wonderful variety of a Boolean arrangement). As an application, we give combinatorial formulas for Euler characteristics of arbitrary line bundles on wonderful varieties. We give analogous constructions and results for augmented wonderful varieties, and for Deligne--Mumford--Knudsen moduli spaces of stable rational curves with marked points.

Abstract:Let F be a totally real number field with degree n = [F: Q] >= 3. Mazur and Urbanowicz proved that ifK2OF similar or equal to (Z/2Z)([F:Q]) (*)and F is not Q(zeta(7) +zeta(-1)(7)) or Q(zeta(9) + zeta(-1)(9)), then F must be one of the 14 cases listed in Mazur and Urbanowicz (1992). In this article, it is proved that 3 of these 14 cases don't satisfy (*), while all the other cases satisfy (*). Hence we find all totally real number fields which satisfy (*).
