Abstract:A univariate trace polynomial is a polynomial in a variable x and formal trace symbols Tr(x^j). Such an expression can be naturally evaluated on matrices, where the trace symbols are evaluated as normalized traces. This paper addresses global and constrained positivity of univariate trace polynomials on symmetric matrices of all finite sizes. A tracial analog of Artin's solution to Hilbert's 17th problem is given: a positive semidefinite univariate trace polynomial is a quotient of sums of products of squares and traces of squares of trace polynomials.

Abstract:We prove non-trivial upper bounds for general bilinear forms with trace functions of bountiful sheaves, where the supports of two variables can be arbitrary subsets in F p of suitable sizes. This essentially recovers the Pólya-Vinogradov range, and also applies to symmetric powers of Kloosterman sums and Frobenius traces of elliptic curves. In the case of hyper-Kloosterman sums, we can beat the Pólya-Vinogradov barrier by combining additive combinatorics with a deep result of Kowalski, Michel and Sawin (2017) on sum-products of Kloosterman sheaves. Two Sato-Tate distributions of Kloosterman sums and Frobenius traces of elliptic curves in sparse families are also concluded.

Abstract:We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbf{\phi})$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, \phi_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbf{\phi}$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Abstract:We study short sums of algebraic trace functions via the $q$-analogue of van der Corput method, and develop methods of arithmetic exponent pairs that coincide with the classical case while the moduli has sufficiently good factorizations. As an application, we prove a quadratic analogue of Brun-Titchmarsh theorem on average, bounding the number of primes $pleqslant X$ with $p^2+1equiv0pmod q$. The other two applications include a larger level of distribution of divisor functions in arithmetic progressions and a sub-Weyl subconvex bound of Dirichlet $L$-functions studied previously by Irving.
New Lower Bounds for the Schur-Siegel-Smyth Trace Problem

Abstract:We derive and implement a new way to find lower bounds on the smallest limiting trace-to-degree ratio of totally positive algebraic integers and improve the previously best known bound to 1.80203. Our method adds new constraints to Smyth's linear programming method to decrease the number of variables required in the new problem of interest. This allows for faster convergence recovering Schur's bound in the simplest case and Siegel's bound in the second simplest case of our new family of bounds. We also prove the existence of a unique optimal solution to our newly phrased problem and express the optimal solution in terms of polynomials. Lastly, we solve this new problem numerically with a gradient descent algorithm to attain the new bound 1.80203.

Positivity for toric Kac polynomials in higher depth

Abstract:We prove that the polynomials counting locally free, absolutely indecomposable, rank 1 representations of quivers over rings of truncated power series have non-negative coefficients. This is a generalisation to higher depth of positivity for toric Kac polynomials. The proof goes by inductively contracting/deleting arrows of the quiver and is inspired from a previous work of Abdelgadir, Mellit and Rodriguez-Villegas on toric Kac polynomials. We also relate counts of absolutely indecomposable quiver representations in higher depth and counts of jets over fibres of quiver moment maps. This is expressed in a plethystic identity involving generating series of these counts. In rank 1, we prove a cohomological upgrade of this identity, by computing the compactly supported cohomology of jet spaces over preprojective stacks. This is reminiscent of PBW isomorphisms for preprojective cohomological Hall algebras. Finally, our plethystic identity allows us to prove two conjectures by Wyss on the asymptotic behaviour of both counts, when depth goes to infinity.

K-theoretic positivity for matroids

Abstract:Hilbert polynomials have positivity properties under favorable conditions. We establish a similar "K-theoretic positivity" for matroids. As an application, for a multiplicity-free subvariety of a product of projective spaces such that the projection onto one of the factors has birational image, we show that a transformation of its K-polynomial is Lorentzian. This partially answers a conjecture of Castillo, Cid-Ruiz, Mohammadi, and Montano. As another application, we show that the h*-vector of a simplicially positive divisor on a matroid is a Macaulay vector, affirmatively answering a question of Speyer for a new infinite family of matroids.

Abstract:We establish an unbounded version of Stinespring's Theorem and a lifting result for Stinespring representations of completely positive modular maps defined on the space of all compact operators. We apply these results to study positivity for Schur multipliers. We characterise positive local Schur multipliers, and provide a description of positive local Schur multipliers of Toeplitz type. We introduce local operator multipliers as a non-commutative analogue of local Schur multipliers, and characterise them extending both the characterisation of operator multipliers from [16] and that of local Schur multipliers from [27]. We provide a description of the positive local operator multipliers in terms of approximation by elements of canonical positive cones.

Abstract:The paper establishes the Krein and Koplienko trace formulas for multivariable operator functions on symmetrically normed ideals of bounded operators. This partially answers the question of Aleksandrov, Peller and Potapov on the existence of spectral shift measures for tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators. Results are proved for self-adjoint and maximal dissipative operators. They cover both ideals with normal and singular traces. The admissible function classes considered in the trace formulas include both analytic and non-analytic scalar functions. Results are illustrated with examples.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the convexity of trace functionals $$(A,B,C)\mapsto \text{Tr}|B^{p}AC^{q}|^{s},$$ for parameters $(p,q,s)$ that are best possible, where $B$ and $C$ are any $n$-by-$n$ positive definite matrices, and $A$ is any $n$-by-$n$ matrix. We also obtain the monotonicity versions of trace functionals of this type. As applications, we extend some results in \cite{HP12quasi,CFL16some} and resolve a conjecture in \cite{RZ14} in the matrix setting. Other conjectures in \cite{RZ14} will also be discussed. We also show that some related trace functionals are not concave in general. Such concavity results were expected to hold in different problems.

On the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz

Abstract:This paper studies the complexity of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz on the semialgebraic set that is given by the polynomial matrix inequality. Under the archimedeanness, we prove a polynomial bound on degrees of terms appearing in the representation of matrix Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Estimates on the exponent and constant are given. As a byproduct, a polynomial bound on the convergence rate of matrix sum-of-squares relaxations is obtained, which resolves an open question raised by Dinh and Pham. When the constraining set is unbounded (the archimedeanness fails), we also prove a similar bound for the matrix version of Putinar--Vasilescu's Positivstellensatz by exploiting homogenization techniques.

Abstract:We introduce tools for transferring nonnegativity certificates for global sections between line bundles on real algebraic surfaces. As applications, we improve Hilbert's degree bounds on sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative ternary forms, give a complete characterization of nonnegative real forms of del Pezzo surfaces, and establish quadratic upper bounds for the degrees of sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative forms on real ruled surfaces.

Abstract:We introduce a new method for building higher-degree sum-of-squares lower bounds over the hypercube $\mathbf{x} \in \{\pm 1\}^N$ from a given degree 2 lower bound. Our method constructs pseudoexpectations that are positive semidefinite by design, lightening some of the technical challenges common to other approaches to SOS lower bounds, such as pseudocalibration. We give general "incoherence" conditions under which degree 2 pseudomoments can be extended to higher degrees. As an application, we extend previous lower bounds for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Hamiltonian from degree 4 to degree 6. (This is subsumed, however, in the stronger results of the parallel work of Ghosh et al.) This amounts to extending degree 2 pseudomoments given by a random low-rank projection matrix. As evidence in favor of our construction for higher degrees, we also show that random high-rank projection matrices (an easier case) can be extended to degree $\omega(1)$. We identify the main obstacle to achieving the same in the low-rank case, and conjecture that while our construction remains correct to leading order, it also requires a next-order adjustment. Our technical argument involves the interplay of two ideas of independent interest. First, our pseudomoment matrix factorizes in terms of certain multiharmonic polynomials. This observation guides our proof of positivity. Second, our pseudomoment values are described graphically by sums over forests, with coefficients given by the Möbius function of a partial ordering of those forests. This connection guides our proof that the pseudomoments satisfy the hypercube constraints. We trace the reason that our pseudomoments can satisfy both the hypercube and positivity constraints simultaneously to a combinatorial relationship between multiharmonic polynomials and this Möbius function.
