Abstract:In terms of the almost complex connection and the unitary moving frame, a complex version on the theory of the nearly Kahler structure in S-6 is given. Under this framework, minimal surfaces in the nearly Kahler S-6 are studied. A complete classification for complete minimal surfaces in S-6 With constant Kahler angle and nonnegative curvature is given. Moreover, almost complex curves in S-6 are considered.

Abstract:For each integer m>1 and l>0 we construct a pair of compact embedded minimal surfaces of genus 1+4m(m-1)l. These surfaces desingularize the m Clifford tori meeting each other along a great circle at the angle of \pi/m. They are invariant under a finite group of screw motions and have no reflection symmetry across a great sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss complete minimal immersions in $\mathbb{R}^N$($N\geq4$) with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. First, we prove nonexistence for the following cases: (1) genus 1 with 2 embedded planar ends, (2) genus $\neq4$, hyperelliptic with 2 embedded planar ends like the Lagrangian catenoid. Then we show the existence of embedded minimal spheres in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with 3 embedded planar ends. Moreover, we construct genus $g$ examples in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with $d$ embedded planar ends such that $g\geq 1$ and $g+2\leq d\leq 2g+1$. These examples include a family of embedded minimal tori with 3 embedded planar ends.

Abstract:Using the Lawson's existence theorem of minimal surfaces and the symmetries of the Hopf fibration, we will construct symmetric embedded closed minimal surfaces in the three dimensional sphere. These surfaces contain the Clifford torus, the Lawson's minimal surfaces, and seven new minimal surfaces with genera 9, 25, 49, 121, 121, 361 and 841. We will also discuss the relation between such surfaces and the maximal extendable group actions on subsurfaces of the three dimensional sphere.
New minimal surface doublings of the Clifford torus and contributions to questions of Yau

Abstract:The purpose of this article is three-fold. First, we apply a general theorem from our earlier work to produce many new minimal doublings of the Clifford Torus in the round three-sphere. This construction generalizes and unifies prior doubling constructions for the Clifford Torus, producing doublings with catenoidal bridges arranged along parallel copies of torus knots. Ketover has also constructed similar minimal surfaces by min-max methods as suggested by Pitts-Rubinstein, but his methods apply only to surfaces which are lifts of genus two surfaces in lens spaces, while ours are not constrained this way. Second, we use this family to prove a new, quadratic lower bound for the number of embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with prescribed genus. This improves upon bounds recently given by Ketover and Karpukhin-Kusner-McGrath-Stern, and contributes to a question of Yau about the structure of the space of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with fixed genus. Third, we verify Yau's conjecture for the first eigenvalue of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ in the following cases. First, for all minimal surface doublings of the equatorial two-sphere constructible by our earlier general theorem. Second, for all the Clifford Torus doublings constructed in this article.

Embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{B}^3$ via equivariant eigenvalue optimization

Abstract:In 1970, Lawson solved the topological realization problem for minimal surfaces in the sphere, showing that any closed orientable surface can be minimally embedded in $\mathbb{S}^3$. The analogous problem for surfaces with boundary was posed by Fraser and Li in 2014, and it has attracted much attention in recent years, stimulating the development of many new constructions for free boundary minimal surfaces. In this paper, we resolve this problem by showing that any compact orientable surface with boundary can be embedded in $\mathbb{B}^3$ as a free boundary minimal surface with area below $2\pi$. Furthermore, we show that the number of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ of prescribed topology and area below $8\pi$, and the number of free boundary minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{B}^3$ with prescribed topology and area below $2\pi$, grow at least linearly with the genus. This is achieved via a new method for producing minimal surfaces of prescribed topology in low-dimensional balls and spheres, based on the optimization of Laplace and Steklov eigenvalues in the presence of a discrete symmetry group. As a key ingredient, we develop new techniques for proving the existence of maximizing metrics, which can be used to resolve the existence problem in many symmetric situations and provide at least partial existence results for classical eigenvalue optimization problems.

Minimal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^{4}(1)$ by doubling the equatorial $\mathbb{S}^{3}$

Abstract:For each large enough $m\in\mathbb{N}$ we construct by PDE gluing methods a closed embedded smooth minimal hypersurface ${\breve{M}_m}$ doubling the equatorial three-sphere $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$ in $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$, with ${\breve{M}_m}$ containing $m^2$ bridges modelled after the three-dimensional catenoid and centered at the points of a square $m\times m$ lattice $L$ contained in the Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}^2\subset \mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$. This answers a long-standing question of Yau in the case of $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$ and long-standing questions of Hsiang. Similarly we construct a self-shrinker ${\breve{M}_{\mathrm{shr},m}}$ of the Mean Curvature Flow in $\mathbb{R}^4$ doubling the three-dimensional spherical self-shrinker $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{shr}}^3\subset \mathbb{R}^4$ with the bridges centered at the points of a square $m\times m$ lattice $L$ contained in a Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}^2\subset \mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{shr}}^3$. Both constructions respect the symmetries of the lattice $L$ as a subset of $\mathbb{S}^4(1)$ or $\mathbb{R}^4$ and are based on the Linearized Doubling (LD) methodology which was first introduced in the construction of minimal surface doublings of $\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^2$ in $\mathbb{S}^3(1)$. Furthermore $\breve{M}_m$ converges as $m \to\infty$ in the varifold sense to $2\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3$, and its volume $|\breve{M}_m| < 2|\mathbb{S}_{\mathrm{eq}}^3|$.

Abstract:Costa first constructed a family of complete minimal surfaces which have genus 1 and 4 planar ends by use of Weierstrass-℘ functions. They are Willmore tori of Willmore energy 16 π . In this paper, the authors consider the geometry of conjugate surfaces of these surfaces. It turns out that these conjugate surfaces are doubly periodic minimal surfaces with flat ends in R 3 . Moreover, the authors can also perform a Lorentzian deformation on these Costa's minimal tori, which produce a family of complete space-like stationary surfaces (i.e., of zero mean curvature) with genus 1 and 4 planar ends in 4-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space R 1 4 .

Topological control for min-max free boundary minimal surfaces

Abstract:We establish general bounds on the topology of free boundary minimal surfaces obtained via min-max methods in compact, three-dimensional ambient manifolds with mean convex boundary. We prove that the first Betti number is lower semicontinuous along min-max sequences converging in the sense of varifolds to free boundary minimal surfaces. In the orientable case, we obtain an even stronger result which implies that if the number of boundary components increases in the varifold limit, then the genus decreases at least as much. We also present several compelling applications, such as the variational construction of a free boundary minimal trinoid in the Euclidean unit ball.

Abstract:IN 1970 Lawson [22] proved that two embedded closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in the unit three-dimensional sphere S3 in lRJ are ambiently isotopic in S3. Lawson proved this theorem by first proving that an embedded orientable closed minimal surface of genus y in a closed orientable Riemannian three-manifold M’ with positive Ricci curvature disconnects M-’ into two genus-8 handlebodics. A result of Frankel [7] was used to prove this. Lawson then applied a deep result of Waldhauscn [33] that states that decompositions of SJ into two genus-cl handlebodies arc unique up to ambient isotopy. More prcciscly. Waldhauscn’s uniqucncss thcorcm states that whenever a closed surface of genus y in S” separates SJ into handlcbodics, then the embedding of the surface is as simple as possible; in other words, the surface is obtained from a two-sphere Sz c S’ by adding handles in an unknotted manner. Mccks [23] gcncralizcd Lawson’s argument to the case of oricntablc closed minimal surfaces in a closed ,V3 with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Meek’s result and another topological uniqueness result of Waldhauscn [33] implies that two closed diffeomorphic minimal surfaces in S2 x S’ with the usual product metric arc ambiently isotopic. Finally, Meeks-Simon-Yau [25] proved that if X is a closed minimal surface in S’ equipped with a metric of non-negative scalar curvature, then X disconnects S3 into two handlebodies and hence dctcrmincs a unique ambient class in S’. In [23] Mceks considered the problem of the topological uniqueness of minimal surfaces in three-dimensional Euclidean space. In particular, Meeks proved that any two compact diffeomorphic minimal surfaces, with boundary a simple closed curve on the boundary of a smooth convex ball, are ambiently isotopic in the ball. Later Hall [I33 showed that there exist two simple closed curves on the unit sphere S* that bound a knotted minimal surface of genus one. In this paper we will use global properties of stable minimal surfaces in [w’ to prove: A properly embedded minimal surface of finite topological type in R’ is unknotted. In particular, if X, and IEz are two such diffeomorphic surfaces, then they are ambiently isotopic. This is the main result of our paper and it is restated in a more precise form in Theorem 5.1. Abstract:We consider surfaces embedded in a 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifold and the problem of the finiteness of the induced distance (i.e., the infimum of the length of horizontal curves that belong to the surface). Recently it has been proved that for a surface having the topology of a sphere embedded in a tight co-orientable structure, the distance is always finite. In this paper we study closed surfaces of genus larger than 1, proving that such surfaces can be embedded in such a way that the induced distance is finite or infinite. We then study the structural stability of the finiteness/not-finiteness of the distance.

Abstract:Let N be a three dimensional Riemannian manifold. Let E be a closed embedded surface in N. Then it is a question of basic interest to see whether one can deform : in its isotopy class to some canonical embedded surface. From the point of view of geometry, a natural canonical surface will be the extremal surface of some functional defined on the space of embedded surfaces. The simplest functional is the area functional. The extremal surface of the area functional is called the minimal surface. Such minimal surfaces were used extensively by Meeks-Yau [MY21 in studying group actions on three dimensional manifolds. In [MY2], the theory of minimal surfaces was used to simplify and strengthen the classical Dehn's lemma, loop theorem and the sphere theorem. In the setting there, one minimizes area among all immersed surfaces and proves that the extremal object is embedded. In this paper, we minimize area among all embedded surfaces isotopic to a fixed embedded surface. In the category of these surfaces, we prove a general existence theorem (Theorem 1). A particular consequence of this theorem is that for irreducible manifolds an embedded incompressible surface is isotopic to an embedded incompressible surface with minimal area. We also prove that there exists an embedded sphere of least area enclosing a fake cell, provided the complementary volume is not a standard ball, and provided there exists no embedded one-sided RP2. By making use of the last result, and a cutting and pasting argument, we are able to settle a well-known problem in the theory of three dimensional manifolds. Abstract:Given any (not necessarily connected) combinatorial finite graph and any compact smooth $6$-manifold $M^6$ with the third Betti number $b_3\not=0$, we construct a calibrated 3-dimensional homologically area minimizing surface on $M$ equipped in a smooth metric $g$, so that the singular set of the surface is precisely an embedding of this finite graph. Moreover, the calibration form near the singular set is a smoothly $GL(6,\mathbb{R})$ twisted special Lagrangian form. The constructions are based on some unpublished ideas of Professor Camillo De Lellis and Professor Robert Bryant.

Abstract:We prove a general fusion theorem for complete orientable minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with finite total curvature. As a consequence, complete orientable minimal surfaces of weak finite total curvature with exotic geometry are produced. More specifically, universal surfaces (i.e., surfaces from which all minimal surfaces can be recovered) and space-filling surfaces with arbitrary genus and no symmetries.

The Schwarzian derivative and the degree of a classical minimal surface

Abstract:Using the Schwarzian derivative we construct a sequence $\left(P_{\ell}\right)_{\ell \geqslant 2}$ of meromorphic differentials on every non-flat oriented minimal surface in Euclidean $3$-space. The differentials $\left(P_{\ell}\right)_{\ell \geqslant 2}$ are invariant under all deformations of the surface arising via the Weierstrass representation and depend on the induced metric and its derivatives only. A minimal surface is said to have degree $n$ if its $n$-th differential is a polynomial expression in the differentials of lower degree. We observe that several well-known minimal surfaces have small degree, including Enneper's surface, the helicoid/catenoid and the Scherk - as well as the Schwarz family. Furthermore, it is shown that locally and away from umbilic points every minimal surface can be approximated by a sequence of minimal surfaces of increasing degree.

Abstract:In this paper, I will mention some applications of minimal surfaces to the geometry and topology of three-manifolds that I discussed in my lecture at the Current Developments in Mathematics Conference for 2004. The rst important application of minimal surfaces to the geometry of three-manifolds was given by Schoen and Yau [22] in their study of Riemannian three-manifolds of positive scalar curvature and their related proof of the positive mass conjecture in general relativity. The techniques that they developed in their proof of this conjecture continue to be useful in studying relationships between stable minimal surfaces and the topology of Riemannian manifolds. Around 1978, Meeks and Yau gave geometric versions of three classical theorems in three-dimensional topology. These classical theorems concern the existence of certain embedded surfaces. In the geometric versions of these theorems, Meeks and Yau proved the existence of essentially cononical solutions, which are given by area minimizing surfaces. They referred to these theorems as the Geometric Dehn’s Lemma, Geometric Loop Theorem and the Geometric Sphere Theorem. As an application of these special geometric minimal surface solutions to these classical topological theorems, Meeks and Yau gave new equivariant versions of these theorems in the presence of a dieren tial nite group action. Their Equivariant Loop Theorem turned out to be the nal missing step in the solution of the Smith Conjecture concerning the standardness of the smooth action of nite cyclic groups on the three-sphere S 3 .
