Abstract:In the last decades an increasing deal of research has investigated the phenomenon of opinion misperception in human communities and, more recently, in social media. Opinion misperception is the wrong evaluation by community's members of the real distribution of opinions or beliefs about a given topic. In this work we explore the mechanisms giving rise to opinion misperception in social media groups, which are larger than physical ones and have peculiar topological features. By means of numerical simulations, we suggest that the structure of connections of such communities plays indeed a role in distorting the perception of the agents about others' beliefs, but it is essentially an indirect effect. Moreover, we show that the main ingredient that generates the misperception is a spiral of silence induced by few, well connected and charismatic agents, which rapidly drives the majority of individuals to stay silent without disclosing their true belief, leading minoritarian opinions to appear more widespread throughout the community.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to explore and explain the generation mechanism of the opinion misperception phenomenon in online social systems. Specifically, the author studied the influence of social network structures on individuals' perception of others' beliefs through numerical simulation, and revealed how a small number of users with high connectivity and charisma can trigger the spiral of silence effect, causing most individuals to choose to remain silent rather than publicly express their true beliefs, thus making minority opinions appear more prevalent in the community. #### Main problems and goals of the paper 1. **Understanding the mechanism of opinion misperception**: - Research the formation mechanism of opinion misperception in online social groups, especially since these groups are larger than physical communities and have unique topological features. - Explore whether and how social network structures distort individuals' perception of others' beliefs. 2. **Spiral of silence effect**: - Analyze how a small number of users with high connectivity and charisma can quickly guide most individuals to remain silent through the spiral of silence effect, making minority opinions seem more prevalent. 3. **Model verification**: - Use the Agent - Based Modeling (ABM) method to construct a simplified model to study social dynamics and observe the spontaneous emergence of macroscopic patterns. - By changing the degree of a small number of users with different opinions in the network, explore how these minority users affect the public opinion perception of the entire system. 4. **Influence of endogenous and exogenous factors**: - Distinguish and quantify the influence of network structure (exogenous factors) and individual cognitive biases (endogenous factors) on opinion misperception. #### Key conclusions - **Influence of network structure**: Although the network structure does have an impact on individuals' opinion perception, this impact is mainly indirect. The main factor that truly drives opinion misperception is the spiral of silence effect triggered by a small number of high - connectivity and charismatic users. - **Importance of the spiral of silence effect**: A small number of active users can quickly guide most individuals to remain silent, which makes minority opinions appear more prevalent and further affects the opinion distribution of the entire community. - **Role of endogenous factors**: Even when considering individual cognitive biases, individual behaviors (such as choosing to remain silent) are still the main source of opinion misperception. #### Formula presentation Some of the key formulas involved in the paper are as follows: - **Average announced opinion**: \[ \langle \omega \rangle=\frac{1}{N} \sum_{i = 1}^{N} \omega_i(t) \] - **Local opinion climate**: \[ r(t)=\left\langle\Delta_i(t)\right\rangle_i=\frac{1}{N} \sum_{i = 1}^{N} \frac{\sum_{j\in\Gamma_i} \omega_j}{|\Gamma_i|} \] - **Objective function**: \[ G(\omega_i)=-\left|\sigma_i b_i+\frac{\sum_{j\in\Gamma_i} A_j^i \omega_j}{|\Gamma_i| + 1-\omega_i}\right| \] Among them, \(b_i\) represents the private opinion of individual \(i\), \(\omega_i\) represents the announced opinion of individual \(i\), \(\sigma_i\) represents the strength of individual \(i\)'s belief in himself, \(\Gamma_i\) represents the neighbor set of individual \(i\), and \(A_j^i\) represents the "prestige" of individual \(j\) relative to individual \(i\). Through these formulas, the paper describes in detail how individuals decide whether to publicly express their opinions based on their neighbors' opinions and their own beliefs, and how these decisions affect the opinion distribution of the entire community at the macroscopic level.
