Abstract:Silicone rubber (SR) has the properties of organic-inorganic materials and good adaptability to the space environment, which can be used as an atomic oxygen (AO)-resistant layer on the spacecraft surface. In this study, SR coatings were used to spray on the polyimide surface to prevent atomic oxygen erosion. Then, the physical, chemical, and AO-resistant properties of the SR were investigated. By means of laser diffraction scattering particle size distribution tests, energy-dispersive spectroscopy elemental mapping, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the fillers and matrix were confirmed as precipitated silica and phenyl SR, respectively. Through analysis of swelling behavior, greater cross-linking density and less swelling ratio were observed at higher temperature and humidity. Furthermore, after AO was exposed with an accumulated fluence of 1.2 × 1021 atoms/cm2, cracks appeared on the coating surface with the change of element content. In addition, it was found that the degree of reaction between AO and SR should not be determined based on mass loss measurements. Our work showed the practical application and great potential of SR protective coating in spacecraft.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly addresses the following issues: 1. **Research Background**: In low Earth orbit (LEO), spacecraft are subjected to harsh environments such as atomic oxygen (AO), particles, thermal cycling, and solar radiation, which lead to the degradation of polymer materials. Although polyimide (PI) is widely used in spacecraft, it is easily eroded by atomic oxygen, necessitating the development of protective coatings with anti-atomic oxygen properties. 2. **Research Objective**: This paper aims to investigate the physicochemical properties of two-component room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV SR) as a protective coating on the surface of polyimide and its resistance to atomic oxygen erosion. By analyzing the filler composition, matrix type, swelling behavior, and atomic oxygen resistance of silicone rubber, the study explores its practical application potential as a surface protective coating for spacecraft. 3. **Specific Issues**: - Determine the filler composition (precipitated silica) of the silicone rubber coating and its particle size distribution. - Analyze the chemical composition of the silicone rubber matrix (phenyl silicone rubber). - Explore the relationship between the crosslink density and swelling ratio of silicone rubber under different curing conditions (temperature, humidity, component ratio). - Test the mass loss and erosion yield of the silicone rubber coating under atomic oxygen exposure and evaluate its surface morphology changes. Through the above research, the authors found that the silicone rubber coating can effectively prevent further erosion of the substrate by atomic oxygen at a specific thickness, but cracks appear under high cumulative flux. Additionally, traditional methods based on mass loss measurements are insufficient to accurately determine the atomic oxygen resistance of silicone rubber coatings.
