Abstract:The basicity of mono-functional alkoxysilanes was found to be remarkably stronger than that of tetra-alkoxysilanes by a combined IR and theoretical studies. NBO analysis suggests that the basicity properties of Si–O–C unit are determined by the competitive hyper-conjugations from the adjacent silicon and carbon centre. The increased contribution from the delocalization of oxygen lone pair to the adjacent Si–R anti-bonding orbitals may be the main origin for decreasing basicity.

Abstract:Trace silicon analysis in organic matrix materials is complicated by time-consuming concentration schemes and/or a lack of suitable organic standards. This paper describes an improved technique for quantitative determination of trace amounts of silicon in organic matrices. The method utilizes recent improvements in atomic absorption spectrometry and can be used to determine silicon in levels as low as 0.1 μg/ml in organic solution. Matrix interferences have been overcome by controlling solids of polymers and preparing standards using Si-free matrix materials. Suitable instrumentation and experimental conditions are described. Model organic silicon compounds and polydimethyl siloxane oils have been examined for use as standards. Experimental data, including a comparison of this method with wet-chemical and x-ray results, is presented. This method can be used for accurate determination of trace silicone contamination in the 1–10 ppm range in (1) paper products, (2) resinous and elastomeric polymers, and (3) oils.

Measurement of Si―OH Content in Fused Silica with Extended Dynamic Range by Fourier Transf Orm Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy Si―OH group is widely used in Si―OH content measure-ment of fused silica optics. However, the measurement accuracy is influenced by water molecular absorption bands in low Si―OH content samples and absorption saturation in high Si―OH content samples, leading to limited measure-ment range. FTIR spectroscopy is employed to measure 2500~5000 cm-1 transmittance spectra of fused silica samples with different OH contents and thicknesses. The interference of water molecular absorption band to 3673 cm-1 is elim-inated. Then Si―OH contents, corresponding measurement errors and limits of detection at 3673 cm-1 and 4522 cm-1 bands are calculated. Based on the experimental results and Beer's law, a model to correlate Si―OH content, sample thickness, measurement error of transmittance, and measurement error of Si―OH content is established. From this model, by using 3673 cm-1 band for fused silica samples with Si―OH content less than 8.17×10-4 and 4522 cm-1 band for samples with Si―OH content more than 8.17×10-4 to measure the Si―OH content, a dynamic range from 0.4×10-6 to10-2 Si―OH can be achieved with optimized accuracy for fused silica samples with 2 mm thickness.

Abstract:Objective:To establish the IR method for determination of ploydimethyl siloxane fluid in Silicone No2 gel.Method: Silicone No2 gel was solved and extracted by toluene.The characteristic absorption peak at 1 262cm~(-1) for Si-CH_3 bond in ploydimethyl siloxane fluid was used as the quantitative determination.Result:The linear Tange of ploydimethyl siloxane fluid was 0.41-2.86 mg·ml~(-1)(r =0.999 9,n =7).The average recovery was 99.97%,RSD was 0.94%(n = 6).Conclusion:The method is accurate,reliable and quick,and can be applied to determination the content of ploydimethyl siloxane fluid in Silicone No2.gel.
Determination of Content of Hydrogen and Molecular Weight in Hydrogen Silicone Oil by ~1H NMR

Abstract:A series of low hydrogen silicone oil were synthesized with high hydrogen silicone oil,octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(D4) and hexamethyldisiloxane(MM) as starting materials and concentrated sulfuric acid as catalyst.The polyhydrosiloxane was characterized by 1H NMR with CDCl3 as solvent and dioxane as internal standard.The content of hydrogen was calculated from ratio of characteristic peak area.Compared with the content of hydrogen obtained by chemical method,the relative deviation between the both methods was less than ±1.9%.The chain segment ratio of hydrogen silicone oil was also obtained by 1H NMR,then the molecular weight of hydrogen silicone oil could be calculated.Combined with the determination of intrinsic viscosity,the K=4.21×10-5L/g and α=0.83 of the polymers were calculated.The values of K,α were consistent with literature values,that had no effect on the content of hydrogen.The determination of molecular weight of hydrogen silicone oil by 1H NMR is feasible.This method is simple,time-saving,accurate,reliable,required less sample and so on.

Abstract:The piperazine type amino-silicone was prepared by α,ω-di-hydroxy-polydimethylsioxane and N-piperazine-propylmethydimethyoxysilane in the presence of alkaline catalyst. The molecular weight of amino silicone was controlled by altering the addition dosage of catalyst, which was a method of theoretical molecular weight. Qualitative and quantitative analyses was used by 1H-NMR tracing in order to confirm the complete reaction. The intrinsic viscosity,[η], was measured by one point method and extrapolation method. The theoretical molecular weight of piperazine type amino-silicone and the measured data of intrinsic viscosity was processed to get the corresponding parameters of the MHS equation, α and K. Thus the MHS equation was obtained, which was appropriate to the structure of the piperazine type amino silicone.
Study on Surface Characters of Methylsioxane-oxyalkylene Copolymers

Abstract:A series of methylsioxane-oxyalkylene copolymers were prepared.Surface tension and cloud point of these siloxane surfactants were known through the testing experiments,and surface characters and trends were investigated.The results showed that the surface tension of the water solution of these siloxane surfactants decreased,when the concentration of the water solution increases.At the concentration of 0.01 g/L,the rate of decreasing of surface tension slowed down.The minimum surface tension was 29～42 mN/m.The cloud point of the water solution of these siloxane surfactants dropped,when the composition of polypropylene oxide increased,and the cloud point of the water solution of siloxane surfactants of n(EO)∶n(PO)=1∶4 was the minimum,whose cloud point was 9.5 ℃.The decreasing rate of surface tension of siloxane surfactants solution along with temperature was less than the rate of the surface tension of methyl silicone oil solution with A25(CETEARETH-25).The equations of surface tension vs.temperature of siloxane surfactants solution were obtained and the average error between the calculated value and the measured value was 7%.
A Novel Chemically Selective Siloxane Polymer for Chemical Vapor Sensing

Abstract:A new hydrogen-bond acidic carbosiloxane polymer for quartz crystal microbalance sensors (QCMs) application was synthesized via O-alkylation, Claisen rearrange, hydrosilylation reaction and functionalized the polysiloxane with trifluoroacetone groups (TFA). The trifluoroisopropanol functionalized polysiloxane was characterized by FT-IR and (HNMR)-H-1. And this novel siloxane polymer was coated onto AT-cut 8 MHz QCM sensors to investigate its gas sensitive responses to the organophosphorus nerve agent stimulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) vapor as well as other interfering organic vapors. The research work indicated that frequency shifts of the trifluoroisopropanol functionalized polysiloxane based QCM sensor to the DMMP vapor were completely linear, and with a regression coefficient of 0.9973 in the concentration range of 10-60 ppm. In addition, the sensitivity of the fabricated QCM sensors to DMMP was up to 10.64 Hz/ppm, and much higher than the other interfering vapors, limits of detection (LODs) of the QCM sensors was 0.28 ppm, thus high selectivity to DMMP was demonstrated in this work.

Abstract:The ~1H NMR spectra of mixtures of dichlorodimethylsilane, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and α,ω-dichloropolydimethylsiloxane Cl-Si(CH_3)_2[OSi(CH_3)_2]_nCl with various n values were measured and a quantitative relationship was derived. Our results indicated that ~1H NMR method can be used to investigate the reaction between dichlorodimethylsilane and dimethylcyclopolysiloxanes.The reaction between dichlorodimethylsilane and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane with different Cl/Si ratios(R) and under different temperature has been studied. It has been found that n values can be controlled and the equilibrium constants at 220℃ and 200℃ for the interaction of two end groups giving middle group plus a dichlorodimethylsilane molecule are 0.11 and 0.10 respectively. The mechanism of the above reaction was proposed.

Abstract:The infinite dilution diffusion coefficients of n-hexane, n-heptane and n-decane in crosslinked silicone rubber with different crosslinking agent concentrations were measured in the temperature range of 348.15K–368.15K by inverse gas chromatography. The crosslinked silicone rubber was obtained by dissolving PDMS prepolymer, crosslinking agent and catalyst in n-heptane solvent and characterized by FTIR spectra. The Van Deemter equation was used to determine diffusion coefficients from the variation in chromatographic peak width with carrier gas flow rate. The good linear relation indicated the Van Deemter equation used in this work was reliable. The influences of small molecule solvent, crosslinking agent concentration and temperature on the infinite dilution diffusion coefficient were investigated. The results showed that the infinite dilution diffusion coefficient decreased with an increasing number of CH2 group in the alkane series. The increase in crosslinking agent concentration resulted in decrease of the infinite dilution diffusion coefficient. The infinite dilution diffusion coefficient increased with the rising of temperature. The interdependence on the infinite dilution diffusion coefficient and temperature accorded with Arrhenius equation well. Diffusion constant and activation energy obtained from the Arrhenius equation provided straight lines with the specific critical volume and crosslinking agent concentration.

Abstract:The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was employed to study the hydrolysis reaction of dimethyldimethoxysilane (DMDMS) in aqueous solution by following the changes of Si–OCH3 characteristic peak. A series of hydrolysis rate constants were achieved by linear regression analysis in various reaction conditions. The results showed that the hydrolysis reactions are affected obviously by the pH value of catalyst and the initial DMDMS concentration. 29Si NMR was also used to ‘in situ’ monitor this system and the results were in an agreement with those from FTIR. It indicated that FTIR is a powerful tool for providing ‘in situ’ information regarding the hydrolysis of alkoxysilane for the high sensitivity and fast scanning ability. The reaction mechanism of nucleophilic displacement with the formation of a pentacoordinate intermediate was suggested.

Abstract:Angle-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ADXPS) is used to measure end group concentration depth profiles for blends of surface active ω-fluorosilane polystyrene with nonfunctional polystyrene. The fluorine signal is in all cases enhanced at the surface, indicating surface segregation of the lower surface tension fluorosilane end groups. End group segregation is enhanced by an increase in the concentration of ω-fluorosilane polystyrene, an increase in the nonfunctional polystyrene molecular weight, or a decrease in the molecular weight of the ω-fluorosilane polystyrene. A self-consistent mean-field lattice theory is developed to model the surface structure and properties of blends containing end-functional polymers. Lattice model calculations provide estimates of concentration depth profiles as a function of the blend composition, the normalized chain lengths of the blend constituents, and the surface and bulk interaction parameters, χs and χb, respectively. Two end-functional polystyrene architectures are considered: α-functional polystyrene for which the lattice reference volume is set equal to that of the entire fluorosilane end group and α,β-functional polystyrene where the fluorosilane end group is assumed to occupy two adjacent lattice sites at the chain end. The lattice model for both architectures provides excellent representations of experimental ADXPS data over a wide range of blend compositions and constituent molecular weights. The α,β-functional polymer model is shown to be superior on two accounts: the lattice reference volume and polymer repeat unit volumes are similar, and the optimal values of χs = −2.18 and χb = 1.59, obtained by regression of this model to ADXPS data, are consistent with group contribution estimates of these parameters.
A new siloxane polymer for chemical vapor sensor

Abstract:A new hexafluoroisopropanol groups functionalized hydrogen-bond acidic siloxane polymer for quartz crystal microbalance sensor (QCMs) application was synthesized via O-alkylation, Claisen rearrange, hydrosilylation and hexafluoroacetone groups (HFA) electrophilic addition reactions. This hexafluoroisopropanol-functionalized siloxane polymer was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H NMR, and coated onto an AT-cut 8MHz QCM sensor to investigate its gas sensitive responses to eight different typical organic volatile chemical vapors. The results indicated that this new siloxane polymer exhibited an excellent performance on the detection of the organophosphorus nerve agent stimulant dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) vapor, and the frequency changes of this functionalized siloxane polymer based QCM sensors to the DMMP vapor were completely linear and with a regression coefficient of 0.9993 in the concentration range of 10–60ppm. In addition, the sensitivity of the fabricated QCM sensor to DMMP was up to 23.07Hz/ppm, and it is much higher than that of the other chemical vapors under the same circumstances, the detection limits (LODs) of this fabricated QCM sensor was obtained as low as 0.13ppm.

Abstract:An analytical protocol for the accurate and precise determination of Si in naphthas is presented by using ICP-OES, optimizing from the sample preparation to the measurement conditions, in order to be able to analyze for the first time silicon contents below 100µgkg-1 in a relatively short time thus being used as a control method. In the petrochemical industry, silicon can be present as a contaminant in different petroleum products such as gasoline, ethanol, or naphthas, forming different silicon compounds during the treatment of these products that are irreversibly adsorbed onto catalyst surfaces decreasing its time life. The complex nature of the organic naphtha sample together with the low detection limits needed make the analysis of silicon quite difficult. The aim of this work is to optimize the measurement of silicon in naphthas by ICP-OES introducing as an improvement the use of isooctane as diluent. The set up was carried out by optimizing the measurement conditions (power, nebulizer flow, pump rate, read time, and viewing mode) and the sample preparation (type of diluent, cleaning process, blanks, and studying various dilution ratios depending on the sample characteristics).
Mixed Silane Monolayers for Controlling the Surface Areal Density of Click-Reactive Alkyne Groups: A Method to Assess Preferential Surface Adsorption on Flat Substrates and a Method to Verify Compositional Homogeneity on Nanoparticles

Abstract:SAMs formed from mixtures of alkyne-silanes and alkane-silanes are used to control the areal density of click-reactive alkyne groups on the surface of flat germanium substrates, silicon wafers, and silica nanoparticles. Two new analytical tools are described for characterization of the mixed SAMs: a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique for quantifying the compositional homogeneity of the mixed monolayers formed on nanoparticles, and an infrared spectroscopy (IR) technique to detect preferential surface adsorption. The TGA technique involves measurement of the change in weight when azide-terminated polymers react with surface alkyne groups on silica nanoparticles via a click reaction, while the IR technique is based on the use of attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) to monitor click reactions between azide compounds with infrared "labels" and alkyne-functional mixed SAMs deposited on germanium ATR plates. Upon application of the new characterization techniques, we are able to prove that the mixed silane monolayers show neither phase separation nor preferential surface adsorption on any of the three substrates studied. When reacted with azide terminal polymers, the areal density at saturation, σ(sat) is found to scale with molecular weight according to σ(sat) ≈ N(-0.57). We conclude that mixed monolayers of alkyne-silanes and alkane-silanes are an effective means of controlling the surface areal density of click-reactive alkyne groups on both flat and nanoparticle substrates.

Abstract:We report control of the density of isolated, single functional groups in homogeneously mixed trichloroalkyl silanes on various silica surfaces. The functional groups are covalently bound to a silane derived from the Rink resin. This Rink-silane is reactive to any nucleophile. Control over the density of functional groups is achieved by diluting the immersion solution containing the Rink-silane with an inert silane, octadecyltrichlorsilane. The isolated nature of the functional groups is confirmed by the stochastic blinking of fluorescent single boron-dipyrromethane dyes imaged in total internal reflection geometry. The robust character of silane monolayers allows facile covalent binding and cleavage of molecular species from silica surfaces as well as general synthetic transformations to be conducted. This is shown by the covalent attachment and then cleavage of a naphthalene chromophore. This low-cost and scalable platform has great potential for use in sensing, molecular electronics, semiconductor processing, and the investigation of fundamental processes in catalysis and the kinetics of molecular association.

Abstract:Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) has numerous excellent properties and is extensively used as the main component of many silicone products in a variety of research fields and practical applications such as biomedical materials, aviation, construction, electronic devices, and automobiles. Interfacial structures of PDMS and other components in silicone systems are important for such research and applications. It is difficult to probe interfacial molecular structures of buried solid-liquid and solid-solid interfaces of silicone materials due to the lack of appropriate analytical tools. In this feature article, we presented our research on elucidating the molecular structures of PDMS as well as other additives in silicone samples at buried interfaces in situ at the molecular level using a nonlinear optical spectroscopic technique, sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG was applied to study various PDMS surfaces in liquid environments to understand their fouling-release and antifouling activities. SFG has also been used to study buried solid-solid interfaces between silicone adhesives and polymers, elucidating the molecular adhesion mechanisms. Our SFG studies provide important knowledge on interfacial structure-function relationships of silicone materials, helping the design and development of silicone materials with improved properties through optimization of silicone interfacial structures.
Spatial resolution in thin film deposition on silicon surfaces by combining silylation and UV/ozonolysis

Abstract:A simple procedure has been developed for the processing of silicon wafers in order to facilitate the spatially resolved growth of thin solid films on their surfaces. Specifically, a combination of silylation and UV/ozonolysis was tested as a way to control the concentration of the surface hydroxo groups required for subsequent atomic layer deposition (ALD) of metals or oxides. Water contact angle measurements were used to evaluate the hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of the surface, a proxy for OH surface coverage, and to optimize the UV/ozonolysis treatment. Silylation with hexamethyldisilazane, trichloro(octadecyl)silane, or trimethylchlorosilane was found to be an efficient way to block the hydroxo sites and to passivate the underlying surface, and UV/O3 treatments were shown to effectively remove the silylation layer and to regain the surface reactivity. Both O3 and 185 nm UV radiation were determined necessary for the removal of the silylation layer, and additional 254 nm radiation was found to enhance the process. Attenuated total reflection-infrared absorption spectroscopy was employed to assess the success of the silylation and UV/O3 removal steps, and atomic force microscopy data provided evidence for the retention of the original smoothness of the surface. Selective growth of HfO2 films via TDMAHf + H2O ALD was seen only on the UV/O3 treated surfaces; total inhibition of the deposition was observed on the untreated silylated surfaces (as determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ellipsometry). Residual film growth was still detected on the latter if the ALD was carried out at high temperatures (250 °C), because the silylation layer deteriorates under such harsh conditions and forms surface defects that act as nucleation sites for the growth of oxide grains (as identified by electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy). We believe that the silylation-UV/O3 procedure advanced here could be easily implemented for the patterning of surfaces in many microelectronic applications.

Abstract:Functionalizing surfaces with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) allows to efficiently bind bioreceptors, for instance, by bio-orthogonal click reactions, which is useful in biosensor fabrication. Control of the bioreceptor concentration on the surface can be achieved by coating an SAM mixture consisting of a functional SAM, which binds the bioreceptor, and a nonfunctional SAM for dilution. In this work, a novel vapor-based coating approach for the preparation of mixed SAM coatings is presented. Sequential evaporation of the SAM precursors, i.e., fluoroalkyl and azidoalkyl silanes, by heating under reduced pressure leads to the formation of a two-dimensional siloxane monolayer network on silicon oxide. The presence of both SAMs in the mixed coatings is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As verified by atomic force microscopy, the morphologies of the coatings and the uncoated silicon oxide substrates are similar, indicating a conformal coating. Functionality of the SAM mixture is demonstrated by a reaction with a fluorescent dye, illustrating its potential application in biosensors.
