Abstract:I report on Chandra X-ray observations of SN 2018cqj, a low luminosity Type Ia supernova that showed an H$\alpha$ line in its optical spectrum. No X-ray emission was detected at the location of the SN, with an upper limit to the X-ray luminosity of 2 $\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$.

Abstract:We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia supernova SN2018cqj/ATLAS18qtd. The supernova exploded in an isolated region at similar to 65 kpc from the S0 galaxy IC 550 at z = 0.0165 (D 74 Mpc) and has a redshift consistent with a physical association to this galaxy. Multicolor photometry show that SN2018cqj/ATLAS18qtd is a low-luminosity (M-Bmax approximate to -17.9 mag), fast-declining Type Ia, with color stretch s(BV) 0.6 and B-band decline rate Delta m(15)(B) 1.77 mag. Two nebular-phase spectra obtained as part of the 100IAS survey at +193 and +307 days after peak show the clear detection of a narrow H alpha line in emission that is resolved in the first spectrum with FWHM 1200 km s(-1) and L-H alpha 3.8 x 10(37) erg s(-1). The detection of a resolved H alpha line with a declining luminosity is broadly consistent with recent models where hydrogen is stripped from the nondegenerate companion in a single-degenerate progenitor system. However, the amount of hydrogen consistent with the luminosities of the H alpha line would be similar to 10(-3) M, which is significantly less than theoretical model predictions in the classical single-degenerate progenitor systems. SN2018cqj/ATLAS18qtd is the second low-luminosity, fast-declining SN Ia after SN2018fhw/ASASSN-18tb that shows narrow H alpha in emission in its nebular-phase spectra.
X-ray Emission from SN 2012ca: A Type Ia-CSM Supernova Explosion in a Dense Surrounding Medium

Abstract:X-ray emission is one of the signposts of circumstellar interaction in supernovae (SNe), but until now, it has been observed only in core-collapse SNe. The level of thermal X-ray emission is a direct measure of the density of the circumstellar medium (CSM), and the absence of X-ray emission from Type Ia SNe has been interpreted as a sign of a very low density CSM. In this paper, we report late-time (500--800 days after discovery) X-ray detections of SN 2012ca in {\it Chandra} data. The presence of hydrogen in the initial spectrum led to a classification of Type Ia-CSM, ostensibly making it the first SN~Ia detected with X-rays. Our analysis of the X-ray data favors an asymmetric medium, with a high-density component which supplies the X-ray emission. The data suggest a number density $> 10^8$ cm$^{-3}$ in the higher-density medium, which is consistent with the large observed Balmer decrement if it arises from collisional excitation. This is high compared to most core-collapse SNe, but it may be consistent with densities suggested for some Type IIn or superluminous SNe. If SN 2012ca is a thermonuclear SN, the large CSM density could imply clumps in the wind, or a dense torus or disk, consistent with the single-degenerate channel. A remote possibility for a core-degenerate channel involves a white dwarf merging with the degenerate core of an asymptotic giant branch star shortly before the explosion, leading to a common envelope around the SN.

Abstract:As part of the 100IAS survey, a program aimed to obtain nebular-phase spectra for a volume-limited and homogeneous sample of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), we observed ASASSN-18tb (SN 2018fhw) at 139 d past maximum light. ASASSN-18tb was a fast-declining, sub-luminous event that fits well within the observed photometric and spectroscopic distributions of the SN Ia population. We detect a prominent H alpha emission line (L-H alpha = 2.2 +/- 0.2 x 10(38) ergs s(-1)) with FWHM approximate to 1100 km s(-1) in the nebular-phase spectrum of this SN Ia. High-luminosity H alpha emission (L-H alpha greater than or similar to 10(40) ergs s(-1)) has previously been discovered in a rare class of SNe Ia-like objects showing circum-stellar medium (CSM) interactions (SNe Ia-CSM). Of the 75 SNe Ia for which we have so far obtained nebular spectra in 100IAS, no other SN shows a similar to 1000 km s(-1) H alpha emission line with comparable line luminosity as ASASSN-18tb, emphasizing the rarity of such emission in the nebular phase. Based on preliminary results from our survey, the rate for ASASSN-18tb-like nebular H alpha emission could be as high as similar to 10 per cent among sub-luminous SNe Ia.

SN 2018hfm: a Low-Energy Type II Supernova with Prominent Signatures of Circumstellar Interaction and Dust Formation

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present multiband optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of an unusual Type II supernova, SN 2018hfm, which exploded in the nearby (d ≈ 34.67 Mpc) dwarf galaxy PGC 1297331 with a very low star formation rate (0.0270 M⊙ yr−1) and a subsolar metallicity environment (∼0.5 Z⊙). The V-band light curve of SN 2018hfm reaches a peak with value of −18.69 ± 0.64 mag, followed by a fast decline (4.42 ± 0.13 mag (100 d)−1). After about 50 d, it is found to experience a large flux drop (∼3.0 mag in V), and then enters into an unusually faint tail, which indicates a relatively small amount of 56Ni synthesized during the explosion. From the bolometric light curve, SN 2018hfm is estimated to have low ejecta mass (∼1.3 M⊙) and low explosion energy (∼1050 erg) compared with typical SNe II. The photospheric spectra of SN 2018hfm are similar to those of other SNe II, with P Cygni profiles of the Balmer series and metal lines, while at late phases the spectra are characterized by box-like profiles of H α emission, suggesting significant interaction between the SN ejecta and circumstellar matter. These box-like emission features are found to show increasing asymmetry with time, with the red-side component becoming gradually weaker, indicating that dust is continuously formed in the ejecta. Based on the dust-estimation tool damocles, we find that the dust increases from ∼10−6 M⊙ to 10−4–10−3 M⊙ between +66.7 d and +389.4 d after explosion.
SN 2018gj: A Short-plateau Type II Supernova with Persistent Blue-shifted H-alpha Emission

Abstract:We present an extensive, panchromatic photometric (UV, Optical, and NIR) and low-resolution optical spectroscopic coverage of a Type IIP supernova SN 2018gj that occurred on the outskirts of the host galaxy NGC 6217. From the V-band light curve, we estimate the plateau length to be ~ 70 +- 2 d, placing it among the very few well-sampled short plateau supernovae (SNe). With V-band peak absolute magnitude Mv < -17.0 +- 0.1 mag, it falls in the middle of the luminosity distribution of the Type II SNe. The colour evolution is typical to other Type II SNe except for an early elbow-like feature in the evolution of V-R colour owing to its early transition from the plateau to the nebular phase. Using the expanding photospheric method, we present an independent estimate of the distance to SN 2018gj. We report the spectral evolution to be typical of a Type II SNe. However, we see a persistent blue shift in emission lines until the late nebular phase, not ordinarily observed in Type II SNe. The amount of radioactive nickel (56Ni) yield in the explosion was estimated to be 0.026 +- 0.007 Msol. We infer from semi-analytical modelling, nebular spectrum, and 1-D hydrodynamical modelling that the probable progenitor was a red supergiant with a zero-age-main-sequence mass < 13 Msol. In the simulated hydrodynamical model light curves, reproducing the early optical bolometric light curve required an additional radiation source, which could be the interaction with the proximal circumstellar matter (CSM).

Abstract:We present optical, infrared, ultraviolet, and radio observations of SN 2022xkq, an underluminous fast-declining type Ia supernova (SN Ia) in NGC 1784 ($\mathrm{D}\approx31$ Mpc), from $<1$ to 180 days after explosion. The high-cadence observations of SN 2022xkq, a photometrically transitional and spectroscopically 91bg-like SN Ia, cover the first days and weeks following explosion which are critical to distinguishing between explosion scenarios. The early light curve of SN 2022xkq has a red early color and exhibits a flux excess which is more prominent in redder bands; this is the first time such a feature has been seen in a transitional/91bg-like SN Ia. We also present 92 optical and 19 near-infrared (NIR) spectra, beginning 0.4 days after explosion in the optical and 2.6 days after explosion in the NIR. SN 2022xkq exhibits a long-lived C I 1.0693 $\mu$m feature which persists until 5 days post-maximum. We also detect C II $\lambda$6580 in the pre-maximum optical spectra. These lines are evidence for unburnt carbon that is difficult to reconcile with the double detonation of a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf. No existing explosion model can fully explain the photometric and spectroscopic dataset of SN 2022xkq, but the considerable breadth of the observations is ideal for furthering our understanding of the processes which produce faint SNe Ia.

Abstract:We present a comparative study of two nearby type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), 2018xx and 2019gbx, that exploded in NGC 4767 and MCG-02-33-017 at a distance of 48 Mpc and 60 Mpc, respectively. The B-band light curve decline rate for SN 2018xx is estimated to be 1.48 & PLUSMN; 0.07 mag and for SN 2019gbx it is 1.37 & PLUSMN; 0.07 mag. Despite the similarities in photometric evolution, quasi-bolometric luminosity, and spectroscopy between these two SNe Ia, SN 2018xx has been found to be fainter by about & SIM;0.38 mag in the B-band and has a lower Ni-56 yield. Their host galaxies have similar metallicities at the SN location, indicating that the differences between these two SNe Ia may be associated with the higher progenitor metallicity of SN 2018xx. Further inspection of the near-maximum-light spectra has revealed that SN 2018xx has relatively strong absorption features near 4300 & ANGS; relative to SN 2019gbx. The application of the code TARDIS fitting to the above features indicates that the absorption features near 4300 & ANGS; appear to be related to not only Fe II/Mg II abundance but possibly to the other element abundances as well. Moreover, SN 2018xx shows a weaker carbon absorption at earlier times, which is also consistent with higher ejecta metallicity.

Abstract:We present the optical photometric and spectroscopic analysis of two type Iax SNe 2018cni and 2020kyg. SN 2018cni is a bright type Iax SN (M$_{V,peak}$ = $-$17.81$\pm$0.21 mag) whereas SN 2020kyg (M$_{V,peak}$ = $-$14.52$\pm$0.21 mag) is a faint one. We derive $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.07 and 0.002 M${_\odot}$, ejecta mass of 0.48 and 0.14 M${_\odot}$ for SNe 2018cni and 2020kyg, respectively. A combined study of the bright and faint type Iax SNe in $R/r$- band reveals that the brighter objects tend to have a longer rise time. However, the correlation between the peak luminosity and decline rate shows that bright and faint type Iax SNe exhibit distinct behaviour. Comparison with standard deflagration models suggests that SN 2018cni is consistent with the deflagration of a CO white dwarf whereas the properties of SN 2020kyg can be better explained by the deflagration of a hybrid CONe white dwarf. The spectral features of both the SNe point to the presence of similar chemical species but with different mass fractions. Our spectral modelling indicates stratification at the outer layers and mixed inner ejecta for both the SNe.

Abstract:We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the unusual Type Ia supernova ASASSN-18tb, including a series of Southern African Large Telescope spectra obtained over the course of nearly six months and the first observations of a supernova by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. We confirm a previous observation by Kollmeier et al. showing that ASASSN-18tb is the first relatively normal Type Ia supernova to exhibit clear broad (similar to 1000 km s(-1)) H alpha emission in its nebular-phase spectra. We find that this event is best explained as a sub-Chandrasekhar mass explosion producing M-Ni approximate to 0.3 M-circle dot. Despite the strong H alpha signature at late times, we find that the early rise of the supernova shows no evidence for deviations from a single-component power-law and is best fit with a moderately shallow power law of index 1.69 +/- 0.04. We find that the H alpha luminosity remains approximately constant after its initial detection at phase +37 d, and that the H alpha velocity evolution does not trace that of the Fe III lambda 4660 emission. These suggest that the H alpha emission arises from a circumstellar medium (CSM) rather than swept-up material from a non-degenerate companion. However, ASASSN-18tb is strikingly different from other known CSM-interacting Type Ia supernovae in a number of significant ways. Those objects typically show an H alpha luminosity two orders of magnitude higher than what is seen in ASASSN-18tb, pushing them away from the empirical light-curve relations that define 'normal' Type Ia supernovae. Conversely, ASASSN-18tb exhibits a fairly typical light curve and luminosity for an underluminous or transitional SN Ia, with M-R approximate to -18.1 mag. Moreover, ASASSN-18tb is the only SN Ia showing H alpha from CSM interaction to be discovered in an early-type galaxy.

The observations are performed in optical and ultraviolet bands, covering from -20 to +400 days from the peak light. The stringent detection limit from prediscovery images suggests that this supernova was actually detected within about 1 day after explosion. Evolution of the very early-time light curve of SN 2014cx is similar to that predicted from a shock breakout and post-shock cooling decline before reaching the optical peak. Our photometric observations show that SN 2014cx has a plateau duration of 100 days, an absolute V-band magnitude of -16.5 mag at t 50 days, and a nickel mass of 0.056+-0.008 Msun. The spectral evolution of SN 2014cx resembles that of normal SNe IIP like SN 1999em and SN 2004et, except that it has a slightly higher expansion velocity ( 4200 km/s at 50 days). From the cooling curve of photospheric temperature, we derive that the progenitor has a pre-explosion radius of 640 Rsun, consistent with those obtained from SNEC modeling ( 620 Rsun) and hydrodynamical modeling of the observables ( 570 Rsun). Moreover, the hydrodynamical simulations yield a total explosion energy of 0.4*10e51 erg, and an ejected mass of 8 Msun. These results indicate that the immediate progenitor of SN 2014cx is likely a red supergiant star with a mass of 10 Msun.

Abstract:We present the results of the monitoring campaign of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2018cnf (aka ASASSN-18mr). It was discovered about 10 days before the maximum light (on MJD = 58293.4+-5.7 in the V band, with MV = -18.13+-0.15 mag). The multiband light curves show an immediate post-peak decline with some minor luminosity fluctuations, followed by a flattening starting about 40 days after maximum. The early spectra are relatively blue and show narrow Balmer lines with P Cygni profiles. Additionally, Fe II, O I, He I and Ca II are detected. The spectra show little evolution with time, with intermediate-width features becoming progressively more prominent, indicating stronger interaction of the SN ejecta with the circumstellar medium. The inspection of archival images from the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) survey has revealed a variable source at the SN position, with a brightest detection in December 2015 at Mr = -14.66+-0.17 mag. This was likely an eruptive phase from the massive progenitor star started from at least mid-2011, and that produced the circumstellar environment within which the star exploded as a Type IIn SN. The overall properties of SN 2018cnf closely resemble those of transients such as SN 2009ip. This similarity favours a massive hypergiant, perhaps a luminous blue variable, as progenitor for SN 2018cnf.

Abstract:We present optical and infrared photometry of the unusual Type Ia supernova 2000cx. With the data of Li et al. (2001) and Jha (2002), this comprises the largest dataset ever assembled for a Type Ia SN, more than 600 points in UBVRIJHK. We confirm the finding of Li et al. regarding the unusually blue B-V colors as SN 2000cx entered the nebular phase. Its I-band secondary hump was extremely weak given its B-band decline rate. The V minus near infrared colors likewise do not match loci based on other slowly declining Type Ia SNe, though V-K is the least ``abnormal''. In several ways SN 2000cx resembles other slow decliners, given its B-band decline rate (Delta m_15(B) = 0.93), the appearance of Fe III lines and weakness of Si II in its pre-maximum spectrum, the V-K colors and post-maximum V-H colors. If the distance modulus derived from Surface Brightness Fluctuations of the host galaxy is correct, we find that the rate of light increase prior to maximum, the characteristics of the bolometric light curve, and the implied absolute magnitude at maximum are all consistent with a sub-luminous object with Delta m_15(B) ~ 1.6-1.7 having a higher than normal kinetic energy.

Abstract:We present optical observations of supernova (SN) 2014ek discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey (TNTS), which shows properties that are consistent with those of SN 2002cx-like events (dubbed as SNe Iax). The photometry indicates that it is underluminous compared to normal SNe Ia, with the absolute $V$-band peak magnitude being as $-17.66\pm0.20$ mag. The spectra are characterized by highly ionized Fe III and intermediate-mass elements (IMEs). The expansion velocity of the ejecta is found to be $\sim$5000 km s$^{-1}$ near the maximum light, only half of that measured for normal SNe Ia. The overall spectral evolution is quite similar to SN 2002cx and SN 2005hk, while the absorption features of the main IMEs seem to be relatively weaker. The ${}^{56}$Ni mass synthesized in the explosion is estimated to be about 0.08 M$_{\odot}$ from the pseudo bolometric light curve. Based on a large sample of SNe Iax, we examined the relations between peak luminosity, ejecta velocity, decline rate, and peak $V - R$ color but did not find noticeable correlations between these observables, in particular when a few extreme events like SN 2008ha are excluded in the analysis. For this sample, we also studied the birthplace environments and confirm that they still hold the trend of occurring preferentially in late-type spiral galaxies. Moreover, SNe Iax tend to occur in large star-forming regions of their host galaxies, more similar to SNe Ibc than SNe II, favoring that their progenitors should be associated with very young stellar populations.

Abstract:We present photometric and spectroscopic data of SN 2018lab, a low-luminosity Type IIP supernova (LLSN) with a V-band peak luminosity of −15.1 ± 0.1 mag. SN 2018lab was discovered by the Distance Less Than 40 Mpc (DLT40) SN survey only 0.73 days post-explosion, as determined by observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). TESS observations of SN 2018lab yield a densely sampled, fast-rising, early-time light curve likely powered by ejecta–circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction. The blueshifted, broadened flash feature in the earliest spectra (<2 days) of SN 2018lab provides further evidence for ejecta–CSM interaction. The early emission features in the spectra of SN 2018lab are well described by models of a red supergiant progenitor with an extended envelope and a close-in CSM. As one of the few LLSNe with observed flash features, SN 2018lab highlights the need for more early spectra to explain the diversity of the flash feature morphology of Type II SNe.

Abstract:We have conducted a systematic and comprehensive monitoring programme of the Type Ia supernova 2000cx at late phases using the VLT and HST. The VLT observations cover phases 360 to 480 days past maximum brightness and include photometry in the BVRIJH bands, together with a single epoch in each of U and Ks. While the optical bands decay by about 1.4 mag per 100 days, we find that the near-IR magnitudes stay virtually constant during the observed period. This means that the importance of the near-IR to the bolometric light curve increases with time. The finding is also in agreement with our detailed modeling of a Type Ia supernova in the nebular phase. In these models, the increased importance of the near-IR is a temperature effect. We note that this complicates late-time studies where often only the V band is well monitored. In particular, it is not correct to assume that any optical band follows the bolometric light curve at these phases, and any conclusions based on such assumptions, e.g., regarding positron-escape, must be regarded as premature. A very simple model where all positrons are trapped can reasonably well account for the observations. The nickel mass deduced from the positron tail of this light curve is lower than found from the peak brightness, providing an estimate of the fraction of late-time emission that is outside of the observed wavelength range. Our detailed models show the signature of an infrared catastrophe at these epochs, which is not supported by the observations.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Early-time radiative signals from Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1–2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from ∼−16.7 d to ∼+ 367.8 d relative to its B-band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resemble the average behaviour of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are Mmax(B) = −19.52 ± 0.47 mag and Δm15(B) = 1.04 ± 0.04 mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the 56Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0 per cent in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed colour evolution with that predicted by different models, such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD) and surface 56Ni mixing, we propose that the nickel mixing is more favoured for SN 2019np.

Abstract:We present spectroscopy and photometry of SN 2018zd, a Type IIP core-collapse supernova with signatures of interactionwith circumstantialmaterial in its earliest spectra.High ionization lines, the earmark of shock breakout, are not seen in the earliest spectral epoch, and are only seen in a single spectrum at 4.9 d after explosion. The strength and brevity of these features imply a confined circumstellar material shell in the immediate vicinity of the progenitor. Once the narrow emission lines disappear, SN 2018zd evolves similarly to a Type IIP SN, although the blue colour and enhanced plateau magnitude of SN 2018zd suggests an additional source of luminosity throughout the plateau phase. While SN 2018zd has previously been proposed as an electron-capture SN, we suggest that it is an Fe core-collapse from a low mass red supergiant progenitor. Differences in interpretation for SN 2018zd arise in part due to the large uncertainty on the distance to the host-galaxy NGC 2146, which we re-derive here to be 15.6+6.1 −3.0 Mpc. We find the ejected 56Ni mass for SN 2018zd to be 0.017 M , significantly higher than models of ECSNe predict. We also find the Ni/Fe ratio in SN 2018zd to be much lower that would be expected for an ECSN.
