Abstract:A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a certain kind. Taking the Schubert variety to be of a special kind and the point to be the "identity coset," our problem specializes to a problem about Pfaffian ideals treatments of which by different methods exist in the literature. Also available in the literature is a geometric solution when the point is a "generic singularity."

Abstract:A recent paper by the first and third authors together with Sabourin raised the question of what the possible Hilbert functions are for fat point subschemes of the form $2p_1+...+2p_r$, for all possible choices of $r$ distinct points in the projective plane. We study this problem for $r$ points in the plane over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic in case either $r \le 8$ or the points lie on a (possibly reducible) conic. In either case, it follows from work of the second author that there are only finitely many configuration types of points, where our notion of configuration type is a generalization of the notion of a representable combinatorial geometry, also known as a representable simple matroid. (We say $p_1,...,p_r$ and $p'_1,...,p'_r$ have the same {\it configuration type} if for all choices of nonnegative integers $m_i$, $Z=m_1p_1+...+m_rp_r$ and $Z'=m_1p'_1+...+m_rp'_r$ have the same Hilbert function.) Assuming either that $7 \le r\le 8$ (see recent work of Guardo and the second author for the cases $r\le 6$) or that the points $p_i$ lie on a conic, we explicitly determine all the configuration types, and show how the configuration type and the coefficients $m_i$ determine (in an explicitly computable way) the Hilbert function (and sometimes the graded Betti numbers) of $Z=m_1p_1+...+m_rp_r$. We demonstrate our results by explicitly listing all Hilbert functions for schemes of $r\le 8$ double points, and for each Hilbert function we state precisely how the points must be arranged (in terms of the configuration type) to obtain that Hilbert function.

Abstract:This paper studies the singularities of affine Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannian (of type $\mathrm{A}^{(1)}_\ell$). For two classes of affine Schubert varieties, we determine the singular loci; and for one class, we also determine explicitly the tangent spaces at singular points. For a general affine Schubert variety, we give partial results on the singular locus.

Abstract:An emerging class of data-intensive applications involve the geographically dispersed extraction of complex scientific information from very large collections of measured or computed data. Such applications arise, for example, in experimental physics, where the data in question is generated by accelerators, and in simulation science, where the data is generated by supercomputers. So-called Data Grids provide essential infrastructure for such applications, much as the Internet provides essential services for applications such as e-mail and the Web. We describe here two services that we believe are fundamental to any Data Grid: reliable, high-speed transporet and replica management. Our high-speed transport service, GridFTP, extends the popular FTP protocol with new features required for Data Grid applciations, such as striping and partial file access. Our replica management service integrates a replica catalog with GridFTP transfers to provide for the creation, registration, location, and management of dataset replicas. We present the design of both services and also preliminary performance results. Our implementations exploit security and other services provided by the Globus Toolkit.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth curve. In this paper we investigate the geometric properties of the double nested Hilbert scheme of points on $C$, a moduli space introduced by the third author in the context of BPS invariants of local curves and sheaf counting on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We prove this moduli space is connected, reduced and of pure dimension; we list its components via an explicit combinatorial characterisation and we show they can be resolved, when singular, by products of symmetric products of $C$. We achieve this via a purely algebraic analysis of the factorisation properties of the monoid of reverse plane partitions. We discuss the (virtual) fundamental class of the moduli space, we describe the local equations cutting it inside a smooth ambient space, and finally we provide a closed formula for its motivic class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.

Abstract:In this article we explain how the coordinate ring of each (open) Schubert variety in the Grassmannian can be identified with a cluster algebra, whose combinatorial structure is encoded using (target labelings of) Postnikov's plabic graphs. This result generalizes a theorem of Scott [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 92 (2006) 345–380] for the Grassmannian, and proves a folklore conjecture for Schubert varieties that has been believed by experts since Scott's result [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 92 (2006) 345–380], though the statement was not formally written down until Muller–Speyer explicitly conjectured it [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 115 (2017) 1014–1071]. To prove this conjecture we use a result of Leclerc [Adv. Math. 300 (2016) 190–228] who used the module category of the preprojective algebra to prove that coordinate rings of many Richardson varieties in the complete flag variety can be identified with cluster algebras. Our proof also uses a construction of Karpman [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 142 (2016) 113–146] to build plabic graphs associated to reduced expressions. We additionally generalize our result to the setting of skew‐Schubert varieties; the latter result uses generalized plabic graphs, that is, plabic graphs whose boundary vertices need not be labeled in cyclic order.

Abstract:The physics of nuclear reactions in stellar plasma is reviewed with special emphasis on the importance of the velocity distribution of ions. Then the properties (density and temperature) of the weak-coupled solar plasma are analysed, showing that the ion velocities should deviate from the Maxwellian distribution and could be better described by a weakly-nonexstensive (|q-1|<0.02) Tsallis' distribution. We discuss concrete physical frameworks for calculating this deviation: the introduction of higher-order corrections to the diffusion and friction coefficients in the Fokker-Plank equation, the influence of the electric-microfield stochastic distribution on the particle dynamics, a velocity correlation function with long-time memory arising from the coupling of the collective and individual degrees of freedom. Finally, we study the effects of such deviations on stellar nuclear rates, on the solar neutrino fluxes, and on the pp neutrino energy spectrum, and analyse the consequences for the solar neutrino problem.

Integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes

Abstract:We continue our study of integral points on moduli schemes by combining the method of Faltings (Arakelov, Parsin, Szpiro) with modularity results and Masser-Wüstholz isogeny estimates. In this work we explicitly bound the height and the number of integral points on coarse Hilbert moduli schemes outside the branch locus. In the first part we define and study coarse Hilbert moduli schemes with their heights and branch loci. In the second part we establish the effective Shafarevich conjecture for abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $K$ such that $A_{\bar{K}}$ has CM or $A_{\bar{K}}$ is of GL2-type and isogenous to all its $G_\mathbb Q$-conjugates. In the third part we continue our explicit study of the Parsin construction given by the forgetful morphism of Hilbert moduli schemes. We now work out our strategy for arbitrary number fields $K$ and we explicitly bound the number of polarizations and module structures on abelian varieties over $K$ with real multiplications. In the last part we illustrate our results by applying them to two classical surfaces first studied by Clebsch (1871) and Klein (1873): We explicitly bound the Weil height and the number of their integral points.

On Seshadri constants and point-curve configurations

Abstract:In the note we study the multipoint Seshadri constants of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}}(1)$ centered at singular loci of certain curve arrangements in the complex projective plane. Our first aim is to show that the values of Seshadri constants can be approximated with use of a combinatorial invariant which we call the configurational Seshadri constant. We study specific examples of point-curve configurations for which we provide actual values of the associated Seshadri constants. In particular, we provide an example based on Hesse point-conic configuration for which the associated Seshadri constant is computed by a line. This shows that multipoint Seshadri constants are not purely combinatorial.

Abstract:We describe a relationship between work of Gatto, Laksov, and their collaborators on realizations of (generalized) Schubert calculus of Grassmannians, and the geometric Satake correspondence of Lusztig, Ginzburg, and Mirković and Vilonen. Along the way we obtain new proofs of equivariant Giambelli formulas for the ordinary and orthogonal Grassmannians, as well as a simple derivation of the “rim-hook” rule for computing in the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a closed formula for the cohomology of real Grassmannians. To achieve this, we use a theory of stratified spaces to compute the differentials in a chain complex that computes the cohomology. Specifically, we organize Schubert cells as a conically smooth stratified space in the sense of Ayala, Francis, Tanaka; the links therein yield the sought differentials, using methods in differential topology. Further, we identify the isomorphism type of this chain complex and we use this result to provide a closed formula for the additive structure of the cohomology of real Grassmannians with arbitrary coefficients.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{k}$ be a closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that all monomial ideals sit in the curvilinear component of the Hilbert scheme of points of the affine space $\mathbb{A}_{\mathbf{k}}^n$, answering a long-standing question about the distribution of torus-fixed points among punctual components. This result confirms that the punctual Hilbert scheme is connected, a property previously established only for the full Hilbert scheme in 1966 by Hartshorne.

Abstract:It remains an open problem to classify the Hilbert functions of double points in $\mathbb{P}^2$. Given a valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme in $\mathbb{P}^2$, we show how to construct a set of fat points $Z \subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ of double and reduced points such that $H_Z$, the Hilbert function of $Z$, is the same as $H$. In other words, we show that any valid Hilbert function $H$ of a zero-dimensional scheme is the Hilbert function of a set of a positive number of double points and some reduced points. For some families of valid Hilbert functions, we are also able to show that $H$ is the Hilbert function of only double points. In addition, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Hilbert function of a scheme of a double points, or double points plus one additional reduced point, to be the Hilbert function of points with support on a star configuration of lines.

Abstract:For a semisimple, simply-connected linear algebraic group, $G$, and parabolic subgroup, $P\subseteq G$, we use the fact that the Hilbert polynomial of the equivariant embedding of $G/P$ is equal to the Hilbert function to compute an explicit formula for the Hilbert series of $G/P$ in terms of the dimensions of finitely many irreducible representations of $G$. As an example, we compute the Hilbert series of the adjoint variety of $SL(n+1,\mathbb{C})$. We conclude by computing the linear term of the numerator of the Hilbert series of any fundamental representation in type $A$.
