Abstract:Motivated by an induced counterpart of treewidth sparsifiers (i.e., sparse subgraphs keeping the treewidth large) provided by the celebrated Grid Minor theorem of Robertson and Seymour [JCTB '86] or by a classic result of Chekuri and Chuzhoy [SODA '15], we show that for any natural numbers $t$ and $w$, and real $\varepsilon > 0$, there is an integer $W := W(t,w,\varepsilon)$ such that every graph with treewidth at least $W$ and no $K_{t,t}$ subgraph admits a 2-connected $n$-vertex induced subgraph with treewidth at least $w$ and at most $(1+\varepsilon)n$ edges. The induced subgraph is either a subdivided wall, or its line graph, or a spanning supergraph of a subdivided biclique. This in particular extends a result of Weissauer [JCTB '19] that graphs of large treewidth have a large biclique subgraph or a long induced cycle.

Abstract:A generalized $t$-pyramid is a graph obtained from a certain kind of tree (a subdivided star or a subdivided cubic caterpillar) and the line graph of a subdivided cubic caterpillar by identifying simplicial vertices. We prove that for every integer $t$ there exists a constant $c(t)$ such that every $n$-vertex even-hole-free graph with no clique of size $t$ and no induced subgraph isomorphic to a generalized $t$-pyramid has treewidth at most $c(t)\log{n}$. This settles a special case of a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon; this bound is also best possible for the class. It follows that several \textsf{NP}-hard problems such as \textsc{Stable Set}, \textsc{Vertex Cover}, \textsc{Dominating Set} and \textsc{Coloring} admit polynomial-time algorithms on this class of graphs. Results from this paper are also used in later papers of the series, in particular to solve the full version of the Sintiari-Trotignon conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that for every integer $t\geq 1$ there exists an integer $c_t\geq 1$ such that every $n$-vertex even-hole-free graph with no clique of size $t$ has treewidth at most $c_t\log{n}$. This resolves a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon, who also proved that the logarithmic bound is asymptotically best possible. It follows that several \textsf{NP}-hard problems such as \textsc{Stable Set}, \textsc{Vertex Cover}, \textsc{Dominating Set} and \textsc{Coloring} admit polynomial-time algorithms on this class of graphs. As a consequence, for every positive integer $r$, $r$-{\sc Coloring} can be solved in polynomial time on even-hole-free graphs without any assumptions on clique size.

Abstract:The celebrated Erdős-Pósa Theorem, in one formulation, asserts that for every $c\geq 1$, graphs with no subgraph (or equivalently, minor) isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles have bounded treewidth. What can we say about the treewidth of graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles? Let us call these graphs $c$-perforated. While $1$-perforated graphs have treewidth one, complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth. But there are sparse examples, too: Bonamy, Bonnet, Déprés, Esperet, Geniet, Hilaire, Thomassé and Wesolek constructed $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and no induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_3$ or $K_{3,3}$; we call these graphs occultations. Indeed, it turns out that a mild (and inevitable) adjustment of occultations provides examples of $2$-perforated graphs with arbitrarily large treewidth and arbitrarily large girth, which we refer to as full occultations. Our main result shows that the converse also holds: for every $c\geq 1$, a $c$-perforated graph has large treewidth if and only if it contains, as an induced subgraph, either a large complete graph, or a large complete bipartite graph, or a large full occultation. This distinguishes $c$-perforated graphs, among graph classes purely defined by forbidden induced subgraphs, as the first to admit a grid-type theorem incorporating obstructions other than subdivided walls and their line graphs. More generally, for all $c,o\geq 1$, we establish a full characterization of induced subgraph obstructions to bounded treewidth in graphs containing no induced subgraph isomorphic to the disjoint union of $c$ cycles, each of length at least $o+2$.

Abstract:We initiate the systematic study of the following Turán-type question. Suppose $\Gamma$ is a graph with $n$ vertices such that the edge density between any pair of subsets of vertices of size at least $t$ is at most $1 - c$, for some $t$ and $c > 0$. What is the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G \subseteq \Gamma$ which does not contain a fixed graph $H$ as an induced subgraph or, more generally, which belongs to a hereditary property $\mathcal{P}$? This provides a common generalization of two recently studied cases, namely $\Gamma$ being a (pseudo-)random graph and a graph without a large complete bipartite subgraph. We focus on the interesting case where $H$ is a bipartite graph. We determine the answer up to a constant factor with respect to $n$ and $t$, for certain bipartite $H$ and for $\Gamma$ either a dense random graph or a Paley graph with a square number of vertices. In particular, our bounds match if $H$ is a tree, or if one part of $H$ has $d$ vertices complete to the other part, all other vertices in that part have degree at most $d$, and the other part has sufficiently many vertices. As applications of the latter result, we answer a question of Alon, Krivelevich, and Samotij on the largest subgraph with a hereditary property which misses a bipartite graph, and determine up to a constant factor the largest number of edges in a string subgraph of $\Gamma$. The proofs are based on a variant of the dependent random choice and a novel approach for finding induced copies by inductively defining probability distributions supported on induced copies of smaller subgraphs.

Abstract:A long-standing conjecture asserts that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that every graph of order n without isolated vertices contains an induced subgraph of order at least cn with all degrees odd. Scott (Comb Probab Comput 1:335–349, 1992) proved that every graph G has an induced subgraph of order at least $|V(G)|/(2\chi (G))$ with all degrees odd, where $\chi (G)$ is the chromatic number of G, this implies the conjecture for graphs with bounded chromatic number. But the factor $1/(2\chi (G))$ seems to be not best possible, for example, Radcliffe and Scott (Discrete Math 275–279, 1995) proved $c=\frac{2}{3}$ for trees, Berman et al. (Aust J Comb 81–85, 1997) showed that $c=\frac{2}{5}$ for graphs with maximum degree 3, so it is interesting to determine the exact value of c for special family of graphs. In this paper, we further confirm the conjecture for graphs with treewidth at most 2 with $c=\frac{2}{5}$, and the bound is best possible.

Abstract:Treewidth is a fundamental graph parameter that quantifies the complexity of graphs by measuring their "thickness" compared to a tree. In 1986, Robertson and Seymour proved that the only way a graph may have large treewidth is by containing a large hexagonal grid as a minor, or equivalently, as a (subdivided) subgraph. Which induced subgraphs prevent a graph from having small treewidth? Along with complete graphs, there are three other "basic" obstructions that should appear in the answer. But the full list remains beyond the reach of current methods, and "even holes" seem to be the crux of this matter. The reason lies in the observation that even holes are the only (non-trivial) induced subgraphs that all basic obstructions except for complete graphs have in common, and yet graphs with no even hole and no $4$-vertex complete subgraph fail to have bounded treewidth. The only known example of (even-hole, $K_4$)-free graphs of unbounded treewidth, called "layered wheels", is due to Sintiari and Trotignon. While rather complicated in global structure, layered wheels are unexpectedly sparse from a local perspective: for every $h\geq 1$, there are layered wheels of arbitrarily large treewidth in which every induced subgraph on at most $h$ vertices is chordal. The converse is also true, that every $K_4$-free chordal graph $H$ appears as an induced subgraph in every layered wheel of sufficiently large treewidth. It turns out, despite their technically involved construction, that layered wheels are in fact quite canonical: our main result shows that the local structure of layered wheels is realized in every (even-hole, $K_4$)-free graph of large treewidth. More precisely, we prove that for a graph $H$, every (even-hole, $K_4$)-free graph of large enough treewidth contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$, if and only if $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph.

Abstract:We show that in Erdös-Rényi random graph G(n, p) with high probability, when p = c/n and c is a constant, the treewidth is upper bounded by tn for some constant t c, but when p ≫ 1/n, the treewidth is lower bounded by n - o(n). The upper bound refutes a conjecture that treewidth in G(n, p = c/n) is as large as n - o(n), and the lower bound provides further theoretical evidence on hardness of some random constraint satisfaction problems called Model RB and Model RD.

We use those concepts to analyse the structure of graphs of treewidth at most three, showinghow they can be decomposed recursively, first canonically into connected parallel components, andthen non-deterministically. The main difficulty consists in showing that all non-deterministic choicescan be related using only finitely many equational axioms.

Abstract:We present and study the following conjecture: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and a graph $H$, every even-hole-free graph of large enough treewidth has an induced subgraph isomorphic to either $K_t$ or $H$, if (and only if) $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. The ``only if'' part follows from the properties of the so-called layered wheels due to Sintiari and Trotignon. Alecu, Chudnovsky, Spirkl and the author recently proved the conjecture in two special cases: (a) when $t=4$; and (b) when $H=cone (F)$ for some forest $F$; that is, $H$ is obtained from $F$ by adding a universal vertex. Our first result is a common strengthening: for an integer $t\geq 4$ and graphs $F$ and $H$, (even-hole, $cone(cone (F))$, $H$, $K_t$)-free graphs have bounded treewidth if and only if $F$ is a forest and $H$ is a $K_4$-free chordal graph. Also, for general $t\geq 4$, we push the current state of the art further than (b) by settling the conjecture for the smallest choices of $H$ that are not coned forests. This follows from our second result: we prove the conjecture when $H$ is a crystal; that is, a graph obtained from several coned double stars by gluing them together along the middle edges of the double stars. In the first version of this paper, we suggested a strengthening of our main conjecture, that for every $t\geq 1$, every graph of sufficiently large treewidth has an induced subgraph of treewidth $t$ which is either complete, complete bipartite, or $2$-degenerate. This strengthening has now been refuted by Chudnovsky and Trotignon [On treewidth and maximum cliques, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.07471" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.07471">arXiv:2405.07471</a>, 2024].

Hyperstability in the Erdős-Sós Conjecture

Abstract:A rough structure theorem is proved for graphs $G$ containing no copy of a bounded degree tree $T$: from any such $G$, one can delete $o(|G||T|)$ edges in order to get a subgraph all of whose connected components have a cover of order $3|T|$. This theorem has the ability to turn questions about sparse $T$-free graphs (about which relatively little is known), into questions about dense $T$-free graphs (for which we have powerful techniques like regularity). There are various applications, the most notable being a proof of the Erdős-Sós Conjecture for large, bounded degree trees.

Embedding Planar Graphs into Graphs of Treewidth $O(\log^{3} n)$

Abstract:Cohen-Addad, Le, Pilipczuk, and Pilipczuk [CLPP23] recently constructed a stochastic embedding with expected $1+\varepsilon$ distortion of $n$-vertex planar graphs (with polynomial aspect ratio) into graphs of treewidth $O(\varepsilon^{-1}\log^{13} n)$. Their embedding is the first to achieve polylogarithmic treewidth. However, there remains a large gap between the treewidth of their embedding and the treewidth lower bound of $\Omega(\log n)$ shown by Carroll and Goel [CG04]. In this work, we substantially narrow the gap by constructing a stochastic embedding with treewidth $O(\varepsilon^{-1}\log^{3} n)$. We obtain our embedding by improving various steps in the CLPP construction. First, we streamline their embedding construction by showing that one can construct a low-treewidth embedding for any graph from (i) a stochastic hierarchy of clusters and (ii) a stochastic balanced cut. We shave off some logarithmic factors in this step by using a single hierarchy of clusters. Next, we construct a stochastic hierarchy of clusters with optimal separating probability and hop bound based on shortcut partition [CCLMST23, CCLMST24]. Finally, we construct a stochastic balanced cut with an improved trade-off between the cut size and the number of cuts. This is done by a new analysis of the contraction sequence introduced by [CLPP23]; our analysis gives an optimal treewidth bound for graphs admitting a contraction sequence.

On the treewidth of generalized q-Kneser graphs

Abstract:The generalized $q$-Kneser graph $K_q(n,k,t)$ for integers $k>t>0$ and $n>2k-t$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-dimensional subspaces of an $n$-dimensional $F_q$-vectorspace with two vertices $U_1$ and $U_2$ adjacent if and only if $\dim(U_1\cap U_2)<t$. We determine the treewidth of the generalized $q$-Kneser graphs $K_q(n,k,t)$ when $t\ge 2$ and $n$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. The imposed bound on $n$ is a significant improvement of the previously known bound. One consequence of our results is that the treewidth of each $q$-Kneser graph $K_q(n,k,t)$ with $k>t>0$ and $n\ge 3k-t+9$ is equal to $\gauss{n}{k}-\gauss{n-t}{k-t}-1$.

Abstract:A set $S\subseteq V$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{$c$-clustered set} if it induces a subgraph with components of order at most $c$ each, and $\alpha_c(G)$ denotes the size of a largest $c$-clustered set. For any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and treewidth $k$, we show that $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k+1}n$, which improves a result of Wood [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.10074" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.10074">arXiv:2208.10074</a>, August 2022], while we construct $n$-vertex graphs $G$ of treewidth~$k$ with $\alpha_c(G)\leq \frac{c}{c+k}n$. In the case $c\leq 2$ or $k=1$ we prove the better lower bound $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{c}{c+k}n$, which settles a conjecture of Chappell and Pelsmajer [Electron.\ J.\ Comb., 2013] and is best-possible. Finally, in the case $c=3$ and $k=2$, we show $\alpha_c(G) \geq \frac{5}{9}n$ and which is best-possible.

Finding large counterexamples by selectively exploring the Pachner graph

Abstract:We often rely on censuses of triangulations to guide our intuition in $3$-manifold topology. However, this can lead to misplaced faith in conjectures if the smallest counterexamples are too large to appear in our census. Since the number of triangulations increases super-exponentially with size, there is no way to expand a census beyond relatively small triangulations; the current census only goes up to $10$ tetrahedra. Here, we show that it is feasible to search for large and hard-to-find counterexamples by using heuristics to selectively (rather than exhaustively) enumerate triangulations. We use this idea to find counterexamples to three conjectures which ask, for certain $3$-manifolds, whether one-vertex triangulations always have a "distinctive" edge that would allow us to recognise the $3$-manifold.

Abstract:Alon, Seymour and Thomas [1990] proved that every $n$-vertex graph excluding $K_t$ as a minor has treewidth less than $t^{3/2}\sqrt{n}$. Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022] recently refined this result by showing that every such graph is a subgraph of some graph with treewidth $t-2$, where each vertex is blown up by a complete graph of order $O(\sqrt{tn})$. Solving an open problem of Illingworth, Scott and Wood [2022], we prove that the treewidth bound can be reduced to $4$ while keeping blowups of order $O_t(\sqrt{n})$. As an extension of the Lipton--Tarjan theorem, in the case of planar graphs, we show that the treewidth can be further reduced to $2$, which is best possible. We generalise this result for $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, with blowups of order $O(t\sqrt{n})$. This setting includes graphs embeddable on any fixed surface.

Abstract:We construct classes of graphs that are variants of the so-called layered wheel. One of their key properties is that while the treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number, the construction can be adjusted to make the dependance grow arbitrarily. Some of these classes provide counter-examples to several conjectures. In particular, the construction includes hereditary classes of graphs whose treewidth is bounded by a function of the clique number while the tree-independence number is unbounded, thus disproving a conjecture of Dallard, Milanič and Štorgel [Treewidth versus clique number.
