Abstract:The heavy jet mass event shape has large perturbative logarithms near the leading order kinematic threshold at $\rho = \frac{1}{3}$. Catani and Webber named these logarithms Sudakov shoulders and resummed them at double-logarithmic level. A resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic level was achieved recently. Here, we extend the resummation using an effective field theory framework to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order and show how to combine it with the resummation of dijet logarithms. We also solve the open problem of an unphysical singularity in the resummed momentum space distribution, in a way similar to how it is resolved in the Drell-Yan $q_T$ spectrum: through a careful analysis of the kinematics and scale-setting in position space. The heavy jet mass Sudakov shoulder is the first observable that does not involve transverse momentum for which position space resummation is critical. These advances may lead to a more precise extraction of the strong coupling constant from $e^+ e^-$ data.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the exact resummation of Sudakov shoulder logarithms in the heavy - jet mass distribution. Specifically:
- **Background**: In electron - positron collisions, event shapes are an important testing ground for quantum field theory and quantum chromodynamics. High - precision event - shape data, especially from the Large Electron - Positron Collider (LEP), have made detailed comparisons between theory and experiment possible and have driven improvements in theoretical and experimental methods. However, the understanding of the three - jet region has been relatively scarce, especially near the three - jet threshold, where fixed - order perturbative theory predictions exhibit discontinuities and singularities, which are known as Sudakov shoulder logarithms.
- **Existing research**: Although the resummation of Sudakov shoulder logarithms at the double - logarithmic level has been achieved by analytical methods, progress has been limited in the past nearly 25 years. Recently, using the Soft - Gluon - Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) framework, resummation at the Next - to - Leading - Logarithm (NLL) level has been achieved.
- **Contributions of this paper**: This paper extends this work, using the effective field theory framework to push the resummation to the Next - to - Next - to - Leading - Logarithm (NNLL) level, and shows how to combine it with the resummation of two - jet logarithms. In addition, this paper solves a non - physical singularity problem in the resummed momentum - space distribution, similar to the treatment in the Drell - Yan \(q_T\) spectrum, that is, by careful analysis of kinematics and scale setting in position space. This is the first observable that does not involve transverse momentum and where position - space resummation is crucial.
- **Specific objectives**:
- **NNLL resummation**: Push the resummation of Sudakov shoulder logarithms to the NNLL level.
- **Combining two - jet resummation**: Smoothly combine the Sudakov shoulder resummation with the resummation of two - jet logarithms.
- **Solving singularities**: Avoid non - physical singularities in resummation through scale setting in position space.
- **Methods**:
- **Factorization formula**: Derive the factorization formula for the heavy - jet mass in the Sudakov shoulder region.
- **Scale setting**: Discuss scale setting in momentum space and position space, and show how to avoid Sudakov Landau poles through scale setting in position space.
- **Matching process**: Describe the matching procedure in the resummation process to take into account two - jet logarithms and form a consistent resummation picture.
- **Results**: This paper provides numerical results that combine NNLL shoulder resummation and NNLL' two - jet resummation and are matched to NLO.
In summary, through the introduction of an effective theoretical framework and scale setting in position space, this paper significantly improves the resummation accuracy of Sudakov shoulder logarithms in the heavy - jet mass distribution, providing a new tool for more precise extraction of the strong coupling constant from electron - positron data.
