Abstract:We have devised an alternative approach to sifting integers in the sieve of Eratosthenes that helps refine the error term. Instead of eliminating all multiples of a prime number $p<z$ in the traditional sieve method, our approach solely eliminates multiples of $p$ that have the minimum prime factor of $p$. By leveraging the density of integers with the least prime factor $p$ in this sieve technique, we obtain a reduced error term and an upper bound of $\pi(x)$ that accurately reflects the prime number theorem.

Abstract:Let a polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X_1,\ldots,X_n]$ be given. The square sieve can provide an upper bound for the number of integral $\mathbf{x} \in [-B,B]^n$ such that $f(\mathbf{x})$ is a perfect square. Recently this has been generalized substantially: first to a power sieve, counting $\mathbf{x} \in [-B,B]^n$ for which $f(\mathbf{x})=y^r$ is solvable for $y \in \mathbb{Z}$; then to a polynomial sieve, counting $\mathbf{x} \in [-B,B]^n$ for which $f(\mathbf{x})=g(y)$ is solvable, for a given polynomial $g$. Formally, a polynomial sieve lemma can encompass the more general problem of counting $\mathbf{x} \in [-B,B]^n$ for which $F(y,\mathbf{x})=0$ is solvable, for a given polynomial $F$. Previous applications, however, have only succeeded in the case that $F(y,\mathbf{x})$ exhibits separation of variables, that is, $F(y,\mathbf{x})$ takes the form $f(\mathbf{x}) - g(y)$. In the present work, we present the first application of a polynomial sieve to count $\mathbf{x} \in [-B,B]^n$ such that $F(y,\mathbf{x})=0$ is solvable, in a case for which $F$ does not exhibit separation of variables. Consequently, we obtain a new result toward a question of Serre, pertaining to counting points in thin sets.

Abstract:We introduce a variant of the large sieve and give an example of its use in a sieving problem. Take the interval [N] = {1,...,N} and, for each odd prime p <= N^{1/2}, remove or ``sieve out'' by all n whose reduction mod p lies in some interval I_p of Z/pZ of length (p-1)/2. Let A be the set that remains: then |A| << N^{1/3 + o(1)}, a bound which improves slightly on the bound of |A| << N^{1/2} which results from applying the large sieve in its usual form. This is a very, very weak result in the direction of a question of Helfgott and Venkatesh, who suggested that nothing like equality can occur in applications of the large sieve unless the unsieved set is essentially the set of values of a polynomial (e.g. A is the set of squares). Assuming the ``exponent pairs conjecture'' (which is deep, as it implies a host of classical questions including the Lindelöf hypothesis, Gauss circle problem and Dirichlet divisor problem) the bound can be improved to |A| << N^{o(1)}. This raises the worry that even reasonably simple sieve problems are connected to issues of which we have little understanding at the present time.

Abstract:We describe a very general abstract form of sieve based on a large sieve inequality which generalizes both the classical sieve inequality of Montgomery (and its higher-dimensional variants), and our recent sieve for Frobenius over function fields. The general framework suggests new applications. We get some first results on the number of prime divisors of ``most'' elements of an elliptic divisibility sequence, and we develop in some detail ``probabilistic'' sieves for random walks on arithmetic groups, e.g., estimating the probability of finding a reducible characteristic polynomial at some step of a random walk on SL(n,Z). In addition to the sieve principle, the applications depend on bounds for a large sieve constant. To prove such bounds involves a variety of deep results, including Property (T) or expanding properties of Cayley graphs, and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields. It seems likely that this sieve can have further applications.

Abstract:We present a version of the sieve of Eratosthenes that can factor all integers $\le x$ in $O(x \log\log x)$ arithmetic operations using at most $O(\sqrt{x}/\log\log x)$ bits of space. This is an improved space bound under the condition that the algorithm takes at most $O(x\log\log x)$ time. We also show our algorithm performs well in practice.

Abstract:The variance of primes in short intervals relates to the Riemann Hypothesis, Montgomery's Pair Correlation Conjecture and the Hardy--Littlewood Conjecture. In regards to its asymptotics, very little is known unconditionally. We study the variance of integers without prime factors below $y$, in short intervals. We use complex analysis and sieve theory to prove an unconditional asymptotic result in a range for which we give evidence is qualitatively best possible. We find that this variance connects with statistics of $y$-friable (smooth) numbers, and, as with primes, is asymptotically smaller than the naive probabilistic prediction once the length of the interval is at least a power of $y$.

Abstract:We study certain aspects of the Selberg sieve, in particular when sifting by rather thin sets of primes. We derive new results for the lower bound sieve suited especially for this setup and we apply them in particular to give a new sieve-propelled proof of Linnik's theorem on the least prime in an arithmetic progression in the case of the presence of exceptional zeros.

Abstract:Erdős and Graham proposed to determine the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s = 1$ and asked, among other things, whether that number could be as large as $2^{n - o(n)}$. We show that the number of subsets $S \subseteq \left\{1,2,\dots,n\right\}$ with $\sum_{s \in S} 1/s \leq 1$ is smaller than $2^{0.93n}$.

Abstract:We develop the foundations of a general framework for producing optimal upper and lower bounds on the sum $\sum_p a_p$ over primes $p$, where $(a_n)_{x/2<n\le x}$ is an arbitrary non-negative sequence satisfying Type I and Type II estimates. Our lower bounds on $\sum_p a_p$ depend on a new sieve method, which is non-iterative and uses all of the Type I and Type II information at once. We also give a complementary general procedure for constructing sequences $(a_n)$ satisfying the Type I and Type II estimates, which in many cases proves that our lower bounds on $\sum_p a_p$ are best possible. A key role in both the sieve method and the construction method is played by the geometry of special subsets of $\mathbb{R}^k$. This allows us to determine precisely the ranges of Type I and Type II estimates for which an asymptotic for $\sum_p a_p$ is guaranteed, that a substantial Type II range is always necessary to guarantee a non-trivial lower bound for $\sum_p a_p$, and to determine the optimal bounds in some naturally occurring families of parameters from the literature. We also demonstrate that the optimal upper and lower bounds for $\sum_p a_p$ exhibit many discontinuities with respect to the Type I and Type II ranges, ruling out the possibility of a particularly simple characterization.

Abstract:For $x\ge y>1$ and $u:= \log x/\log y$, let $\Phi(x,y)$ denote the number of positive integers up to $x$ free of prime divisors less than or equal to $y$. In 1950 de Bruijn [1] studied the approximation of $\Phi(x,y)$ by the quantity \[\mu_y(u)e^{\gamma}x\log y\prod_{p\leq y}\left(1-\frac{1}{p}\right),\] where $\gamma=0.5772156...$ is Euler's constant and \[\mu_y(u):=\int_{1}^{u}y^{t-u}\omega(t)\,dt.\] He showed that the asymptotic formula \[\Phi(x,y)=\mu_y(u)e^{\gamma}x\log y\prod_{p\leq y}\left(1-\frac{1}{p}\right)+O\left(\frac{xR(y)}{\log y}\right)\] holds uniformly for all $x\ge y\ge2$, where $R(y)$ is a positive decreasing function related to the error estimates in the Prime Number Theorem. In this paper we obtain numerically explicit versions of de Bruijn's result.

Abstract:The p-rough numbers are those numbers all of whose prime factors are greater than p. These are exactly those numbers left after Eratosthenes sieve has been advanced from 2 through the prime p. Here we show that for fixed p there is a line of symmetry for the function $\Phi(x,p)$, and we introduce the function $\Delta \Phi(x,p)$ which is the difference between $\Phi(x,p)$ and the line of symmetry. $\Delta \Phi(x,p)$ is periodic and bounded and has a rotational symmetry.

Abstract:We denote, as usual, the number of integers not exceeding x having no prime factors greater than y by Ψ( x, y ). We also write The function Ψ( x, y ) is of great interest in number theory and has been studied by many researchers (see [ 3 ], [ 5 ] and [ 6 ] for example). The function Ψ( x, z, y ) has also received some attention (see [ 2 ], [ 4–6 ]). In this paper we shall try to obtain a positive lower bound for Ψ( x, z, y ) with y as small as possible when z is about x 1⁄2 in magnitude. We note that the approach in [ 5 ] and [ 6 ] allows y to be much smaller than is permissible here, but requires x/z to be smaller than any power of x in [ 6 ] (unless some conjecture like the Riemann Hypothesis is assumed), or needs in [ 5 ]. The following result was obtained by Balog[ 1 ].
