Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:We study curvature invariants of a sub-Riemannian manifold (i.e., a manifold with a Riemannian metric on a non-holonomic distribution) related to mutual curvature of several pairwise orthogonal subspaces of the distribution, and prove geometrical inequalities for a sub-Riemannian submanifold. As applications, inequalities are proved for submanifolds with mutually orthogonal distributions that include scalar and mutual curvature. For compact submanifolds, inequalities are obtained that are supported by known integral formulas for almost-product manifolds.

Abstract:Multiplicative relations in the cohomology ring of a manifold impose constraints upon its stable systoles. Given a compact Riemannian manifold (X,g), its real homology H_*(X,R) is naturally endowed with the stable norm. Briefly, if h\in H_k(X,R) then the stable norm of h is the infimum of the Riemannian k-volumes of real cycles representing h. The stable k-systole is the minimum of the stable norm over nonzero elements in the lattice of integral classes in H_k(X,R). Relying on results from the geometry of numbers due to W. Banaszczyk, and extending work by M. Gromov and J. Hebda, we prove metric-independent inequalities for products of stable systoles, where the product can be as long as the real cup length of X.

Untwisted Gromov-Witten invariants of Riemann-Finsler manifolds

Abstract:We define a $\mathbb{Q}$-valued deformation invariant of certain complete Riemann-Finsler manifolds, in particular of complete Riemannian manifolds with non positive sectional curvature. It is proved that every rational number is the value of this invariant for some compact Riemannian manifold. We use this to find the first and mostly sharp generalizations, to non-compact products and fibrations, of Preissman's theorem on non-existence of negative sectional curvature metrics on compact products. For example, $\Sigma \times T ^{n}$ admits a metric of negative sectional curvature, where $\Sigma$ is a non-compact possibly infinite type surface, if and only if $\Sigma$ has genus zero. We also give novel estimates on counts of closed geodesics with restrictions on multiplicity. Along the way, we also prove that sky catastrophes of smooth dynamical systems are not geodesible by a certain class of forward complete Riemann-Finsler metrics, in particular by complete Riemannian metrics with non-positive sectional curvature. This partially answers a question of Fuller and gives important examples for our theory here.

Abstract:We study obstructions to the existence of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on closed smooth manifolds arising from torsion classes in the integral homology of their fundamental groups. As an application, we construct new examples of manifolds which do not admit positive scalar curvature metrics, but whose Cartesian products admit such metrics.

Abstract:This article investigates the geometric and topologic of warped product submanifolds in Riemannian warped product Q ε m × R . In this respect, we obtain the first Chen inequality that involves extrinsic invariants like the length of the warping functions and the mean curvature. This inequality involves two intrinsic invariants (sectional curvature and δ -invariant). In addition, an integral bound is provided for the Bochner operator formula of compact warped product submanifolds in terms of the Ricci curvature gradient. We aim to apply this theory to many structures and obtain Dirichlet eigenvalues for problem applications. Some new results regarding the vanishing mean curvature are presented as a partial solution, and this can be considered for the well-known problem given by Chern.

Llarull type theorems on complete manifolds with positive scalar curvature

Abstract:In this paper, without assuming that manifolds are spin, we prove that if a compact orientable, and connected Riemannian manifold $(M^{n},g)$ with scalar curvature $R_{g}\geq 6$ admits a non-zero degree and $1$-Lipschitz map to $(\mathbb{S}^{3}\times \mathbb{T}^{n-3},g_{\mathbb{S}^{3}}+g_{\mathbb{T}^{n-3}})$, for $4\leq n\leq 7$, then $(M^{n},g)$ is locally isometric to $\mathbb{S}^{3}\times\mathbb{T}^{n-3}$. Similar results are established for noncompact cases as $(\mathbb{S}^{3}\times \mathbb{R}^{n-3},g_{\mathbb{S}^{3}}+g_{\mathbb{R}^{n-3}})$ being model spaces (see Theorem \ref{noncompactrigidity1}, Theorem \ref{noncompactrigidity2}, Theorem \ref{noncompactrigidity3}, Theorem \ref{noncompactrigidity4}). We observe that the results differ significantly when $n=4$ compared to $n\geq 5$. Our results imply that the $\epsilon$-gap length extremality of the standard $\mathbb{S}^3$ is stable under the Riemannian product with $\mathbb{R}^m$, $1\leq m\leq 4$ (see $D_{3}$. Question in Gromov's paper \cite{Gromov2017}, p.153).

Abstract:We show scalar-mean curvature rigidity of warped products of round spheres of dimension at least 2 over compact intervals equipped with strictly log-concave warping functions. This generalizes earlier results of Cecchini-Zeidler to all dimensions. Moreover, we show scalar curvature rigidity of round spheres of dimension at least 3 with two antipodal points removed. This resolves a problem in Gromov's ''Four Lectures'' in all dimensions. Our arguments are based on spin geometry.

Elliptic curves in lcs manifolds and metric invariants

Abstract:We study invariants defined by count of charged, elliptic $J$-holomorphic curves in locally conformally symplectic manifolds. We use this to define $\mathbb{Q} $-valued deformation invariants of certain complete Riemann-Finlser manifolds and their isometries and this is used to find some new phenomena in Riemann-Finlser geometry. In contact geometry this Gromov-Witten theory is used to study fixed Reeb strings of strict contactomorphisms. Along the way, we state an analogue of the Weinstein conjecture in lcs geometry, directly extending the Weinstein conjecture, and discuss various partial verifications. A counterexample for a stronger, also natural form of this conjecture is given.

Abstract:Algebraic properties are explored for the curvature tensors of Riemannian manifolds, using the irreducible decomposition of curvature tensors. Our method provides a powerful tool to analyze the irreducible basis as well as an algorithm to determine the linear dependence of arbitrary Riemann polynomials. We completely specify 13 independent basis elements for the quartic scalars and explicitly find 13 linear relations among 26 scalar invariants. Our method provides several completely new results, including some clues to identify 23 independent basis elements from 90 quintic scalars, that are difficult to find otherwise.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the geometric structures associated with curvature radii of curves with values on a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. We show the existence of sub-Riemannian manifolds naturally associated with the curvature radii and we investigate their properties. The main character of our construction is a pair of global vector fields $f_1, f_2$, which encodes intrinsic information about the geometry of $(M, g)$.

Abstract:We study a variational problem on a smooth manifold with a decomposition of the tangent bundle into $k>2$ subbundles (distributions), namely, we consider the integrated sum of their mixed scalar curvatures as a functional of adapted pseudo-Riemannian metric (keeping the pairwise orthogonality of the distributions) and contorsion tensor, defining a linear connection. This functional allows us to generalize the class of Einstein metrics in the following sense: if all of the distributions are one-dimensional, then it coincides with the geometrical part of the Einstein-Hilbert action restricted to adapted metrics. We prove that metrics in pairs metric-contorsion critical for our functional make all of the distributions totally umbilical. We obtain examples and obstructions to existence of those critical pairs in some special cases: twisted products with statistical connections; semi-symmetric connections and 3-Sasaki manifolds with metric-compatible connections.

Abstract:Green's inequality shows that a compact Riemannian manifold with scalar curvature at least $n(n-1)$ has injectivity radius at most $\pi$, and that equality is achieved only for the radius 1 sphere. In this work we show how extra topological assumptions can lead to stronger upper bounds. The topologies we consider are $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{T}^{n-k-2}\times\mathbb{R}^k$ for $n\leq 7$ and $0\leq k\leq 2$ and 3-manifolds with positive scalar curvature except lens spaces $L(p,q)$ with $p$ odd. We also prove a strengthened inequality for $3$-manifolds with positive scalar curvature and large diameter. Our proof uses previous results of Gromov and Zhu.

Abstract:The Theorem of Bonnet--Myers implies that manifolds with topology $M^{n-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$ do not admit a metric of positive Ricci curvature, while the resolution of Geroch's conjecture implies that the torus $\mathbb{T}^n$ does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature. In this work we introduce a new notion of curvature interpolating between Ricci and scalar curvature (so called $m$-intermediate curvature), and use stable weighted slicings to show that for $n \leq 7$ the manifolds $N^n = M^{n-m} \times \mathbb{T}^m$ do not admit a metric of positive $m$-intermediate curvature.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that, a compact complex manifold X admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive (resp., negative) scalar curvature if and only if K-X (resp., K-X(-1)) is not pseudo-effective. On the contrary, we also show that on an arbitrary compact complex manifold X with complex dimension >= 2, there exist smooth Hermitian metrics with positive total scalar curvature, and one of the key ingredients in the proof relies on a recent solution to the Gauduchon conjecture by G. Szekelyhidi, V. Tosatti, and B. Weinkove.

Abstract:This paper starts by introducing results from geometric measure theory to prove symmetric decreasing rearrangement inequalities on $\mathbb{R}^n$, which give multiple proofs of the isoperimetric and Pólya-Szegő inequalities. Then we consider smooth oriented Riemannian manifolds of the form $M^n = (0,\infty)\times \Sigma^{n-1}$, and test what results carry over from the $\mathbb{R}^n$ setting or what assumptions about $M^n$ need to be added. Of particular interest was proving the smooth co-area formula in the Riemannian manifolds setting and re-formulating particular geometric inequalities.

Abstract:Let M-n, n >= 3, be a compact differentiable manifold with nonpositive Yamabe invariant sigma(M). Suppose g(0) is a continuous metric with volume V (M, g(0)) = 1, smooth outside a compact set Sigma, and is in W-loc(1,p) for some p > n. Suppose the scalar curvature of g(0) is at least sigma(M) outside Sigma. We prove that g(0) is Einstein outside Sigma if the codimension of Sigma is at least 2. If in addition, g(0) is Lipschitz then g(0) is smooth and Einstein after a change of the smooth structure. If Sigma is a compact embedded hypersurface, g(0) is smooth up to Sigma from two sides of Sigma, and if the difference of the mean curvatures along Sigma at two sides of Sigma has a fixed appropriate sign, then g(0) is also Einstein outside Sigma. For manifolds with dimension between 3 and 7, without a spin assumption we obtain a positive mass theorem on an asymptotically flat manifold for metrics with a compact singular set of codimension at least 2.
