Abstract:The mean field limit with time dependent weights for a 1D singular case, given by the attractive Coulomb interactions, is considered. This extends recent results [1,8] for the case of regular interactions. The approach taken here is based on transferring the kinetic target equation to a Burgers-type equation through the distribution function of the measures. The analysis leading to the stability estimates of the latter equation makes use of Kruzkov entropy type estimates adapted to deal with nonlocal source terms.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to derive and analyze the mean - field limit in one - dimensional opinion dynamics when there are Coulomb interaction and time - dependent weights. Specifically, the paper focuses on a system consisting of \(2N\) ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which describes the changes of individuals' opinions and weights over time:
\[
\begin{cases}
\dot{x}_i^N(t)=\frac{1}{N}\sum_{j = 1}^N m_j^N(t)V'(x_j^N(t)-x_i^N(t)),&x_i^N(0)=x_{0,i}^N\\
\dot{m}_i^N(t)=\psi_i^N(x^N(t),m^N(t)),&m_i^N(0)=m_{0,i}^N
\end{cases}
\]
where:
- \(x_i^N(t)\) represents the opinion of the \(i\)-th individual at time \(t\).
- \(m_i^N(t)\) represents the weight of the \(i\)-th individual at time \(t\).
- \(V(x)\) is an interaction function that describes the mutual influence between individuals.
- \(\psi_i^N(x^N(t),m^N(t))\) describes the change of weight over time.
The main objectives of the paper are:
1. **Derive the mean - field equation**: By transforming the above system into a form similar to the Burgers equation, derive the equation under the mean - field limit.
2. **Prove the well - posedness of the equation**: Use Kruzkov entropy - type estimates to deal with non - local source terms and prove the well - posedness of the mean - field equation.
3. **Analyze the stability**: Through stability estimates, prove that the solution of the system converges to the solution of the mean - field equation under the Wasserstein distance.
The focus of the paper lies in dealing with the singularity brought by the Coulomb interaction (\(V(x) = |x|\)) and considering the influence of time - dependent weights. These factors make the problem more complicated, but at the same time provide a model closer to actual social and biological phenomena.
