Abstract:This book is an introductory course to basic commutative algebra with a particular emphasis on finitely generated projective modules. We adopt the constructive point of view, with which all existence theorems have an explicit algorithmic content content. In particular, when a theorem affirms the existence of an object -- the solution of a problem -- a construction algorithm of the object can always be extracted from the given proof. We revisit with a new and often simplifying eye several abstract classical theories. In particular, we review theories which did not have any algorithmic content in their general natural framework, such as Galois theory, the Dedekind domains, the finitely generated projective modules or the Krull dimension.

Computational Complexity in Algebraic Combinatorics

Abstract:Algebraic Combinatorics originated in Algebra and Representation Theory, studying their discrete objects and integral quantities via combinatorial methods which have since developed independent and self-contained lives and brought us some beautiful formulas and combinatorial interpretations. The flagship hook-length formula counts the number of Standard Young Tableaux, which also gives the dimension of the irreducible Specht modules of the Symmetric group. The elegant Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the multiplicities of irreducible GL-modules in the tensor products of GL-modules. Such formulas and rules have inspired large areas of study and development beyond Algebra and Combinatorics, becoming applicable to Integrable Probability and Statistical Mechanics, and Computational Complexity Theory. We will see what lies beyond the reach of such nice product formulas and combinatorial interpretations and enter the realm of Computational Complexity Theory, that could formally explain the beauty we see and the difficulties we encounter in finding further formulas and ``combinatorial interpretations''. A 85-year-old such problem asks for a positive combinatorial formula for the Kronecker coefficients of the Symmetric group, another one pertains to the plethysm coefficients of the General Linear group. In the opposite direction, the study of Kronecker and plethysm coefficients leads to the disproof of the wishful approach of Geometric Complexity Theory (GCT) towards the resolution of the algebraic P vs NP Millennium problem, the VP vs VNP problem. In order to make GCT work and establish computational complexity lower bounds, we need to understand representation theoretic multiplicities in further detail, possibly asymptotically.

Abstract:Let K〈X〉 be a finite generated free associative algebra over a field K of characteristic zero and let f,g∈K〈X〉 generate their centralizer respectively. Assume that the f and g are algebraically independent, the leading homogeneous components of f and g are algebraically dependent and deg(f)∤deg(g), deg(g)∤deg(f). In this article, we construct a counterexample to a conjecture of Jie-Tai Yu that deg([f,g])>min{deg(f),deg(g)}, which is closely related to the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉. We also obtain a counterexample to another related conjecture of Makar-Limanov and Jie-Tai Yu stated in terms of Malcev–Neumann formal power series. In view of the counterexamples we formulate two open problems concerning degree estimate for commutators in view of the study of the structure of the automorphism group of K〈X〉.The counterexamples in this article are constructed by applying the description of the free algebra K〈X〉 considered as a bimodule of K[u] where u is a monomial which is not a power of another monomial and the solution the equation [um,s]=[un,r] with unknowns r,s∈K〈X〉. The newly discovered description and the solution of the equation in this article are closely related to the combinatorial and computational aspects of free associative algebras, hence have their own independent interests.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

An inverse Grassmannian Littlewood-Richardson rule and extensions

Abstract:Chow rings of flag varieties have bases of Schubert cycles $\sigma_u$, indexed by permutations. A major problem of algebraic combinatorics is to give a positive combinatorial formula for the structure constants of this basis. The celebrated Littlewood-Richardson rules solve this problem for special products $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ where $u$ and $v$ are $p$-Grassmannian permutations. Building on work of Wyser, we introduce backstable clans to prove such a rule for the problem of computing the product $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ when $u$ is $p$-inverse Grassmannian and $v$ is $q$-inverse Grassmannian. By establishing several new families of linear relations among structure constants, we further extend this result to obtain a positive combinatorial rule for $\sigma_u \cdot \sigma_v$ in the case that $u$ is covered in weak Bruhat order by a $p$-inverse Grassmannian permutation and $v$ is a $q$-inverse Grassmannian permutation.

Abstract:Here we announce the construction and properties of a big commutative subalgebra of the Kirillov algebra attached to a finite dimensional irreducible representation of a complex semisimple Lie group. They are commutative finite flat algebras over the cohomology of the classifying space of the group. They are isomorphic with the equivariant intersection cohomology of affine Schubert varieties, endowing the latter with a new ring structure. Study of the finer aspects of the structure of the big algebras will also furnish the stalks of the intersection cohomology with ring structure, thus ringifying Lusztig's q-weight multiplicity polynomials i.e., certain affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

Essential Semigroups and Branching Rules

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a semisimple complex Lie algebra of finite dimension and $\mathfrak{h}$ be a semisimple subalgebra. We present an approach to find the branching rules for the pair $\mathfrak{g}\supset\mathfrak{h}$. According to an idea of Zhelobenko the information on restriction to $\mathfrak{h}$ of all irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ is contained in one associative algebra, which we call the \emph{branching algebra}. We use an \emph{essential semigroup} $\Sigma$, which parametrizes some bases in every finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{g}$, and describe the branching rules for $\mathfrak{g}\supset\mathfrak{h}$ in terms of a certain subsemigroup $\Sigma'$ of $\Sigma$. If $\Sigma'$ is finitely generated, then the semigroup algebra corresponding to $\Sigma'$ is a toric degeneration of the branching algebra. We propose the algorithm to find a description of $\Sigma'$ in this case. We give examples by deriving the branching rules for $A_n\supset A_{n-1}$, $B_n\supset D_n$, $G_2\supset A_2$, $B_3\supset G_2$, and $F_4\supset B_4$.

Abstract:The construction of joins and secant varieties is studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. For ideals generated by quadratic monomials, the generators of the secant ideals are obstructions to graph colorings, and this leads to a commutative algebra version of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Given any projective variety and any term order, we explore whether the initial ideal of the secant ideal coincides with the secant ideal of the initial ideal. For toric varieties, this leads to the notion of delightful triangulations of convex polytopes.

Abstract:In universal algebraic geometry, an algebra is called an equational domain if the union of two algebraic sets is algebraic. We characterize equational domains, with respect to polynomial equations, inside congruence permutable varieties, and with respect to term equations, among all algebras of size two and all algebras of size three with a cyclic automorphism. Furthermore, for each size at least three, we prove that, modulo term equivalence, there is a continuum of equational domains of that size.

Abstract:Associated to any hypergraph is a toric ideal encoding the algebraic relations among its edges. We study these ideals and the combinatorics of their minimal generators, and derive general degree bounds for both uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs in terms of balanced hypergraph bicolorings, separators, and splitting sets. In turn, this provides complexity bounds for algebraic statistical models associated to hypergraphs. As two main applications, we recover a well-known complexity result for Markov bases of arbitrary 3-way tables, and we show that the defining ideal of the tangential variety is generated by quadratics and cubics in cumulant coordinates.

Abelian varieties over finite fields with commutative endomorphism algebra: theory and algorithms

Abstract:We give a categorical description of all abelian varieties with commutative endomorphism ring over a finite field with $q=p^a$ elements in a fixed isogeny class in terms of pairs consisting of a fractional $\mathbb Z[\pi,q/\pi]$-ideal and a fractional $W\otimes_{\mathbb Z_p} \mathbb Z_p[\pi,q/\pi]$-ideal, with $\pi$ the Frobenius endomorphism and $W$ the ring of integers in an unramified extension of $\mathbb Q_p$ of degree $a$. The latter ideal should be compatible at $p$ with the former and stable under the action of a semilinear Frobenius (and Verschiebung) operator; it will be the Dieudonné module of the corresponding abelian variety. Using this categorical description we create effective algorithms to compute isomorphism classes of these objects and we produce many new examples exhibiting exotic patterns.

Abstract:We introduce a geometric method to study additive combinatorial problems. Using equivariant cohomology we reprove the Dias da Silva-Hamidoune theorem. We improve a result of Sun on the linear extension of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We generalize a theorem of G. Kós (the Grashopper problem) which in some sense is a simultaneous generalization of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture. We also prove a signed version of the Erdős-Heilbronn conjecture and the Grashopper problem. Most identities used are based on calculating the projective degree of an algebraic variety in two different ways.

Abstract:We analyze the conductance of the quantum point contact containing large localized spin J. The additional plateau is formed on a ballistic conductance staircase if only one propagating channel is rendered conducting. The conductance value at this plateau is shown to depend strongly on J and decrease from 3e^2/2h to e^2/h when J increases from 1/2 to infinity, which is in a good agreement with the experimental observations [D.J. Reilly, et al, Phys. Rev. B 63, 121311 (2001)].

Abstract:International Journal of Algebra and Computation, Ahead of Print. We study minimal and almost minimal varieties of commutative integral residuated lattices. In particular, we prove that the variety [math] of generalized Boolean algebras and the variety [math] generated by the negative integers are the only two semilinear atoms. Furthermore, we give a characterization of all the finitely generated covers of [math], showing that there are infinitely many, we axiomatize the unique common cover of [math] and [math], and we construct continuum-many semilinear covers of [math] and infinitely many non-semilinear ones.

Abstract:These lecture notes for the 2013 CIME/CIRM summer school Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry deal with manifestly infinite-dimensional algebraic varieties with large symmetry groups. So large, in fact, that subvarieties stable under those symmetry groups are defined by finitely many orbits of equations---whence the title Noetherianity up to symmetry. It is not the purpose of these notes to give a systematic, exhaustive treatment of such varieties, but rather to discuss a few "personal favourites": exciting examples drawn from applications in algebraic statistics and multilinear algebra. My hope is that these notes will attract other mathematicians to this vibrant area at the crossroads of combinatorics, commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, statistics, and other applications.
