Abstract:We consider the Schr{ö}dinger equation in $\mathbf{R}^d$, $d \ge 1$, with a confining potential growing at most quadratically. Our main theorem characterizes open sets from which observability holds, provided they are sufficiently regular in a certain sense. The observability condition involves the Hamiltonian flow associated with the Schr{ö}dinger operator under consideration. It is obtained using semiclassical analysis techniques. It allows to provide with an accurate estimation of the optimal observation time. We illustrate this result with several examples. In the case of two-dimensional harmonic potentials, focusing on conical or rotation-invariant observation sets, we express our observability condition in terms of arithmetical properties of the characteristic frequencies of the oscillator.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the observability and controllability of wave equations coupled by first or zero order terms on a compact manifold. We adopt the approach in Dehman-Lebeau's paper \cite{DehmanLebeau09} to prove that: the weak observability inequality holds for wave equations coupled by first order terms on compact manifold without boundary if and only if a class of ordinary differential equations related to the symbol of the first order terms along the Hamiltonian flow are exactly controllable. We also compute the higher order part of the observability constant and the observation time. By duality, we obtain the controllability of the dual control system in a finite co-dimensional space. This gives the full controllability under the assumption of unique continuation of eigenfunctions. Moreover, these results can be applied to the systems of wave equations coupled by zero order terms of cascade structure after an appropriate change of unknowns and spaces. Finally, we provide some concrete examples as applications where the unique continuation property indeed holds.

Quantitative observability for one-dimensional Schrödinger equations with potentials

Abstract:In this note, we prove the quantitative observability with an explicit control cost for the 1D Schrödinger equation over $\mathbb{R}$ with real-valued, bounded continuous potential on thick sets. Our proof relies on different techniques for low-frequency and high-frequency estimates. In particular, we extend the large time observability result for the 1D free Schrodinger equation in Theorem 1.1 of Huang-Wang-Wang [20] to any short time. As another byproduct, we extend the spectral inequality of Lebeau-Moyano [27] for real-analytic potentials to bounded continuous potentials in the one-dimensional case.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to obtain observability estimates for Schr{ö}dinger equations in the plane R 2. More precisely, considering a 2$\pi$Z 2-periodic potential V $\in$ L $\infty$ (R 2), we prove that the evolution equation i$\partial$tu = --$\Delta$u + V (x)u, is observable from any 2$\pi$Z 2-periodic measurable set, in any small time T > 0. We then extend Ta{ü}ffer's recent result [T{ä}u22] in the two-dimensional case to less regular observable sets and general bounded periodic potentials. The methodology of the proof is based on the use of the Floquet-Bloch transform, Strichartz estimates and semiclassical defect measures for the obtention of observability inequalities for a family of Schr{ö}dinger equations posed on the torus R 2 /2$\pi$Z 2 .

Abstract:The celebrated geometric control condition of Bardos, Lebeau, and Rauch is necessary and sufficient for wave observability [1,7] and exact controllability. It requires that any point in phase-space be transported by the generalized geodesic flow to the region of observation in some finite time. The initial smoothness (\Cinf) required on the coefficients of the metric to prove that exact control and geometric control are essentially equivalent was subsequently relaxed to \Con2-metrics/coefficients and \Con3-domains [2] which is close to the optimal smoothness required to preserve a generalized geodesic flow. In this article, we investigate a natural generalization of the geometric control condition that makes sense for \Con1-metrics and we prove that wave observability holds under this condition. Moreover, we establish that the observability property is stable under rougher (Lipschitz) perturbation of the metric. We also provide a geometric necessary condition for wave observability to hold. Transport equations that describe the propagation of semi-classical measures are at the heart of the arguments. They are natural extensions to geometries with boundaries of usual transport equations. This article is mainly dedicated to the proof of such propagation equations in this very rough context.

Abstract:We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the exact observability of the Schrodinger equations with point interaction and inverse-square potentials on half-line. The necessary and sufficient condition for these two cases are derived from two Logvinenko-Sereda type theorems for generalized Fourier transform. Specifically, the generalized Fourier transform associated to the Schrödinger operators with inverse-square potentials on half-line are the well known Hankel transforms. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a subset $\Omega$ such that a function with its Hankel transform supporting in a given interval can be bounded, in $L^{2}$-norm, from above by its restriction to the set $\Omega$, with constant independent of the position of the interval

Abstract:Solutions of a system of wave equations are constructed for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions at every regularity level. We prove that boundary observability, and thus boundary exact controllability, at some regularity level is equivalent to boundary observability at all levels. The main ingredient is the ellipticity of a time-derivative on the Neumann trace of the solution, which is proved by microlocal techniques.

Abstract:We analyse stability of observability estimates for solutions to wave and Scr\" odinger equations subjected to additive perturbations. The paper generalises the recent averaged observability/control result by allowing for systems consisting of operators of different types. The method also applies to the simultaneous observability problem by which one tries to estimate the energy of each component of a system under consideration. The analysis relies on microlocal defect tools; in particular on standard H-measures, when the main dynamic of the system is governed by the wave operator, while parabolic H-measures are explored in the case of the Schr\" odinger operator.

Abstract:A semiclassical approximation is derived by using a family of wavepackets to map arbitrary wavefunctions into phase space. If the Hamiltonian can be approximated as linear over each individual wavepacket, as often done when presenting Ehrenfest's theorem, the resulting approximation is a linear first-order partial differential equation on phase space, which will be referred to as the Schrödinger-Ehrenfest or SE equation. This advectively transports wavefunctions along classical trajectories, so that as a trajectory is followed in time the amplitude remains constant while the phase changes by the action divided by $\hbar$. The wavefunction's squared-magnitude is a plausible phase space density and obeys Liouville's equation for the classical time evolution. This is a derivation of the Koopman-von~Neumann (KvN) formulation of classical mechanics, which previously was postulated but not derived. With the time-independent SE equation, continuity of the wavefunction requires the change of phase around any closed path in the torus covered by a classical trajectory to be an integer multiple of $2\pi$, giving a standing wave picture of old quantum mechanics. While this applies to any system, for separable systems it gives Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a boundary observability estimate for stochastic Schrödinger equations by means of the global Carleman estimate. Our Carleman estimate is based on a new fundamental identity for a stochastic Schrödinger-like operator. Applications to the state observation problem for semilinear stochastic Schrödinger equations and the unique continuation problem for stochastic Schrödinger equations are also addressed.

Abstract:We give a boundary observability result for a $1$d wave equation with a potential. We then deduce with a Schauder fixed-point argument the existence of a Neumann boundary control for a semi-linear wave equation $\partial_{tt}y - \partial_{xx}y + f(y) = 0$ under an optimal growth assumption at infinity on $f$ of the type $s\ln^2s$. Moreover, assuming additional assumption on $f'$, we construct a minimizing sequence which converges to a control. Numerical experiments illustrate the results. This work extends to the Neumann boundary control case the work of Zuazua in $1993$ and the work of Münch and Trélat in $2022$.

Abstract:This paper is inspired by Wang, Wang and Zhang's work [ Observability and unique continuation inequalities for the Schr\"odinger equation. J. Eur. Math. Soc. 21, 3513--3572 (2019)], where they present several observability and unique continuation inequalities for the free Schr\"{o}dinger equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. We extend all such observability and unique continuation inequalities for the Schr\"{o}dinger equations on half-line with inverse-square potentials. Technically, the proofs essentially rely on the representation of the solution, a Nazarov type uncertainty principle for the Hankel transform and an interpolation inequality for functions whose Hankel transform have compact support.

Abstract:In this article, the structure of semiclassical measures for solutions to the linear Schrödinger equation on the torus is analysed. We show that the disintegration of such a measure on every invariant lagrangian torus is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We obtain an expression of the Radon-Nikodym derivative in terms of the sequence of initial data and show that it satisfies an explicit propagation law. As a consequence, we also prove an observability inequality, saying that the L-norm of a solution on any open subset of the torus controls the full L-norm.

Inhomogeneous percolation models for spreading phenomena in random graphs

Abstract:Percolation theory has been largely used in the study of structural properties of complex networks such as the robustness, with remarkable results. Nevertheless, a purely topological description is not sufficient for a correct characterization of networks behaviour in relation with physical flows and spreading phenomena taking place on them. The functionality of real networks also depends on the ability of the nodes and the edges in bearing and handling loads of flows, energy, information and other physical quantities. We propose to study these properties introducing a process of inhomogeneous percolation, in which both the nodes and the edges spread out the flows with a given probability. Generating functions approach is exploited in order to get a generalization of the Molloy-Reed Criterion for inhomogeneous joint site bond percolation in correlated random graphs. A series of simple assumptions allows the analysis of more realistic situations, for which a number of new results are presented. In particular, for the site percolation with inhomogeneous edge transmission, we obtain the explicit expressions of the percolation threshold for many interesting cases, that are analyzed by means of simple examples and numerical simulations. Some possible applications are debated.

Observability of complex systems via conserved quantities

Abstract:Many systems in biology, physics, and engineering are modeled by nonlinear dynamical systems where the states are usually unknown and only a subset of the state variables can be physically measured. Can we understand the full system from what we measure? In the mathematics literature, this question is framed as the observability problem. It has to do with recovering information about the state variables from the observed states (the measurements). In this paper, we relate the observability problem to another structural feature of many models relevant in the physical and biological sciences: the conserved quantity. For models based on systems of differential equations, conserved quantities offer desirable properties such as dimension reduction which simplifies model analysis. Here, we use differential embeddings to show that conserved quantities involving a set of special variables provide more flexibility in what can be measured to address the observability problem for systems of interest in biology. Specifically, we provide conditions under which a collection of conserved quantities make the system observable. We apply our methods to provide alternate measurable variables in models where conserved quantities have been used for model analysis historically in biological contexts.

Abstract:We study the formalism of Kosower-Maybee-O'Connell (KMOC) to extract classical impulse from quantum amplitude in the context of the partial wave expansion of a 2-to-2 elastic scattering. We take two complementary approaches to establish the connection. The first one takes advantage of Clebsch-Gordan relations for the base amplitudes of the partial wave expansion. The second one is a novel adaptation of the traditional saddle point approximation in the semi-classical limit. In the former, an interference between the S-matrix and its conjugate leads to a large degree of cancellation such that the saddle point approximation to handle a rapidly oscillating integral is no longer needed. As an example with a non-orbital angular momentum, we apply our methods to the charge-monopole scattering problem in the probe limit and reproduce both of the two angles characterizing the classical scattering. A spinor basis for the partial wave expansion, a non-relativistic avatar of the spinor-helicity variables, plays a crucial role throughout our computations.

Abstract:We report Meissner effect for type-II superconductors with a maximum Tc of 19 K, which is the highest value among those in new-carbon related superconductors, found in the honeycomb arrays of multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs). Drastic reduction of ferromagnetic catalyst and efficient growth of MWNTs by deoxidization of catalyst make the finding possible. The weak magnetic anisotropy, superconductive coherence length (- 7 nm), and disappearance of the Meissner effect after dissolving array structure indicate that the graphite structure of an MWNT and those intertube coupling in the honeycomb array are dominant factors for the mechanism.
