Abstract:Mechanoreceptors of the insect play a vital role for the insect to sense and monitor the environmental parameters, like flow, tactile pressure, etc. This paper presents the studies made on the morphology of the mechanoreceptor of the insect Blattella asahinai (scientific name of cockroach) that is a hair-like structure known as trichoid sensilla, by scanning electron microscope and confocal laser microscope. The scanned images show the details of sensilla components in which the hair is embedded in the sockets, which are connected with the cuticle and joint membrane, where the dendrite touches at the base of the hair passing through the cuticle layers. The images also show that the tubular bodies and microtubules are tightly compacted inside the dendrite. This paper presents the details of how the sensilla work when an external stimulus act on them. The hair deflects with the disturbance of the cuticle and joint membrane, and this deformed hair leans on the dendrite, which is attached at the base of the hair that in turn presses the tubular bodies and microtubules, which develop negative ions passing down through the dendrite to the neuron, which provides information as an electric signal to the brain of the insect so that it responds for necessary action. Based on the morphological studies, sensing mechanism, material properties of the components, and design principles will be evolved for the development of an artificial bio-inspired sensor. A solid works model of the sensilla is also presented.

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a biomimetic sensor, with the ability to imitate exteroceptor and proprioceptor functions of invertebrates, such as earthworms. A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film is selected as the sensing element because it is flexible, highly sensitive and easy to be integrated in different shapes. Perforated PVDF strips are embedded in a segmented silicone shell of a crawling earthworm minirobot with the ability to elongate and contract, thanks to a smart configuration of shape memory alloy actuators. A 4-segment minirobot with a sensorised skin has been fabricated. Experiments on separate sensorised silicone segments and also on the sensorised minirobot show that the biomimetic PVDF-based sensors can detect both the external contact and the internal actions, thus imitating the exteroceptive and proprioceptive sensing capabilities of real earthworms.

Abstract:The star-nosed mole is recognized as a tactilely sensitive mammal due to its unique nose, which facilitates spatial detection in dark environments through touch using its appendages enveloped in numerous sensory receptors. This article introduces a bionic soft robot inspired by the star-nosed mole, which combines a pneumatic soft platform with a polydimethylsiloxane-polyethylene terephthalate cylindrical tactile sensor array based on bilayer single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerators, mimicking the muscle tissue of the mole's nose and the cylindrical appendages surrounded by Eimer's organs. The cylindrical sensor array enables multiangle spatial detection without an external power supply and remains unaffected by external materials. By implementing a constant curvature model for robot motion control, positional information is provided for the contact points between the cylindrical sensor array and the external environment. The robot effectively discriminates the distance and shape of various objects and achieves nonvisual 3D spatial detection and reconstruction in real-world scenarios. This work presents a novel bionic approach for 3D spatial detection in nonvisual environments.

Abstract:Antennae are the main sensory organs of insects which allow them to gather information from environment through direct contact and active sensing. In this study, a self-powered bionic antenna (SBA) was developed to emulate the structure and function of insect antenna for robotic tactile sensing. The sensing component of SBA based on the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology enables the conversion of mechanical stimuli into voltage signal without requiring external power source, and is capable of identifying different contact materials. To imitate the active sensing performance of insect antenna, a two-stage actuator was designed and integrated into the SBA, enabling active sensing in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The ultra-sensitive, lightweight and drivable design of SBA renders it highly compatible with micro soft robots featured with low actuation force and compact size, facilitating both passive and active real-time sensing and making it a promising solution for future robotic tactile systems.

Recognition of surface texture with wearable tactile sensor array: A pilot Study

Abstract:Discrimination of surface textures and their surface roughness using tactile sensors have attracted increasing attention. Highly sensitive tactile sensors with the ability to recognize and discriminate the surface textures and roughness of grasped objects are crucial for intelligent robotics. This paper presents a methodology by using the developed WMB model (W-M function and Beam-Bundle Theory) and an algorithm based on artificial neural network to study the performance of a flexible tactile sensor for surface texture classification. For the WMB model, the quasi-3D surfaces of specific objects are reconstructed based on W-M function and basic statistical theory. A simplified Beam-Bundle Model is utilized to represent the cover layer of the sensor and simulates the normal force fluctuations during sliding movements. According to the simulation results, surface textures can be classified by the characteristic frequency cluster (CFC) existing in the fluctuation of curve's spectrum. As an experiment, an artificial neural network is established to classify surface textures based on voltage signals from the tactile sensor. An MAF array represents the CFC information and improves the classification accuracy from 78 % to 82 %. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed WMB model and that it provides a new method of analysis involving robotic tactile interactions. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Tactile sensing typically involves active exploration of unknown surfaces and objects, making it especially effective at processing the characteristics of materials and textures. A key property extracted by human tactile perception is surface roughness, which relies on measuring vibratory signals using the multi-layered fingertip structure. Existing robotic systems lack tactile sensors that are able to provide high dynamic sensing ranges, perceive material properties, and maintain a low hardware cost. In this work, we introduce the reference design and fabrication procedure of a miniature and low-cost tactile sensor consisting of a biomimetic cutaneous structure, including the artificial fingerprint, dermis, epidermis, and an embedded magnet-sensor structure which serves as a mechanoreceptor for converting mechanical information to digital signals. The presented sensor is capable of detecting high-resolution magnetic field data through the Hall effect and creating high-dimensional time-frequency domain features for material texture classification. Additionally, we investigate the effects of different superficial sensor fingerprint patterns for classifying materials through both simulation and physical experimentation. After extracting time series and frequency domain features, we assess a k-nearest neighbors classifier for distinguishing between different materials. The results from our experiments show that our biomimetic tactile sensors with fingerprint ridges can classify materials with more than 8% higher accuracy and lower variability than ridge-less sensors. These results, along with the low cost and customizability of our sensor, demonstrate high potential for lowering the barrier to entry for a wide array of robotic applications, including model-less tactile sensing for texture classification, material inspection, and object recognition.

Abstract:Multimodal haptic perception is essential for enhancing perceptual experiences in augmented reality applications. To date, several artificial tactile interfaces have been developed to perceive pressure and precontact signals, while simultaneously detecting object type and softness with quantified modulus still remains challenging. Here, inspired by the campaniform sensilla on insect antennae, we proposed a hemispherical bimodal intelligent tactile sensor (BITS) array using the triboelectric effect. The system is capable of softness identification, modulus quantification, and material type recognition. In principle, due to the varied deformability of materials, the BITS generates unique triboelectric output fingerprints when in contact with the tested object. Furthermore, owing to the different electron affinities, the BITS array can accurately recognize material type (99.4% accuracy), facilitating softness recognition (100% accuracy) and modulus quantification. It is promising that the BITS based on the triboelectric effect has the potential to be miniaturized to provide real-time accurate haptic information as an artificial antenna toward applications of human-machine integration.

Abstract:The tactile perception of an object's surface material plays an important role in many intelligent fields including object recognition, robotic grasp, and environment exploration. Enlightened by the human active tactile perception process that originates from scanning a finger on the surface, a novel finger-like tactile sensor for surface material recognition has been designed according to the transduction mechanism of cilia and Villari effect of the iron–gallium alloy. Based on the structural dynamic theory of Euler–Bernoulli beam, the linear constitutive equations of magetostrictive material and the Faraday law of electromagnetic induction, the output voltage model of the sensor under vibration induced from the fingertip-surface scanning has been established. Furthermore, a prototype of the sensor, on the macroscale, is fabricated. In order to verify the performance, the sensor is used to measure induced vibration signals with texture properties during sliding on the surface and classify five similar texture surfaces with small differences with a classification algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the proposed tactile sensor is effective and highly accurate for surface material classification. The sensor is characterized by high sensitivity and quick response. It has the potential of being miniaturized and integrated into the finger of a robotic hand to realize surface material recognition in real time.

Abstract:Recent achievements in the field of electronic skin have provided promising technology for prosthetic systems. However, the development of a bionic tactile-perception system that exhibits integrated stimuli sensing and neuron-like information-processing functionalities in a low-pressure regime remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a tactile sensor for smart prosthetics based on giant magneto-impedance (GMI) material embedded with an air gap. The sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of 120 newton(-1) (or 4.4 kilopascal(-1)) and a very low detection limit of 10 micronewtons (or 0.3 pascals). The integration of the tactile sensor with an inductance-capacitance (LC) oscillation circuit enabled direct transduction of force stimuli into digital-frequency signals. The frequency increased with the force stimuli, consistent with the relationship between stimuli and human responses. The minimum loading of 50 micronewtons (or 1.25 pascals), which is less than the sensing threshold value of human skin, was also encoded into the frequency, similar to the pulse waveform of humans. The proposed tactile sensor not only showed desirable sensitivity and low detection limit but also exhibited transduction of digital-frequency signals like human stimuli responses. These features of the GMI-based tactile sensor show potential for its applications in smart prosthetics, especially prosthetic limbs that can functionally replace natural limbs.

Abstract:An adjustable radio frequency‐resonator‐based tactile array (RFTA) with machine‐learning perception is proposed, in which the resonator frequency of each unit is regulated through the doping of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The multilayer micropyramid structure gives rise to high sensitivity and a low detection limit. Wireless tactile position identification and object recognition are also facilitated. Intelligent soft robotics and wearable electronics require flexible, wireless radio frequency (RF) pressure sensors for human‐like tactile perception of their moving parts. Existing devices face two challenges for array extension: the construction of sensitive units over a limited area and the handling of resonant peaks overlapping within the channel width. Herein, a simply adjustable RF‐resonator‐based tactile array (RFTA) is reported, in which the initial frequency of each resonator unit is regulated by doping polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dielectric layers with various concentrations of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). An array is constructed using four sensor units with a frequency interval of 15 MHz and a multi‐layer micropyramid structure is employed to obtain a low detection limit (<1 Pa) and high sensitivity (17.49 MHz kPa‐1 in the low‐pressure range). A machine‐learning‐based strategy identifies tactile positions precisely via a one‐time S11 reading, achieving 98.5% accuracy with six stimulation modes. Furthermore, the RFTA distinguishes six objects during the grasping process when installed on a soft manipulator. The device shows considerable potential to be extended for flexible moving scenarios and high‐integrated tactile sensing systems for soft robotics.

Abstract:Inspired by human tactual mechanism, a bio‐inspired artificial tactile (BAT) sensing system is presented, which consists of the BAT sensor and the full‐connected neural network (FCNN). BAT sensor mimics the human skin for sensing tactile stimuli with the highest sensitivity of −7.11 V N−1, and FCNN functions as the simulated human brain for intelligent tactile perception with an identification accuracy of 95.7%. Human tactile perception involves the activation of mechanoreceptors located within the skin in response to external stimuli, along with the organization and processing within the brain. However, human sensations may be subject to the issues related to some physiological factors (such as skin injury or neurasthenia), resulting in inability to quantify tactile information. To address this challenge, a novel bio‐inspired artificial tactile (BAT) sensing system enabled by the integration of optical microfiber (OM) with full‐connected neural network (FCNN) in this paper is demonstrated, inspired by human physiological characteristics and tactile mechanisms. In this system, the BAT sensor mimics human skin, where the OM serves as the mechanoreceptor for sensing tactile stimuli, while the FCNN functions as a simulated human brain to train and extract the signal characteristics for intelligent object recognition. The experimental results indicate that the proposed BAT sensor can sensitively respond to both the contact force (static tactile stimuli), as well as the vibrotactile events (dynamic tactile stimuli) for the recognition of regular textures. Furthermore, by integrating the trained FCNN, the BAT sensing system accurately identifies various intricate surface textures with an exceptional accuracy of 95.7%, highlighting its potential in next‐generation human‐machine interaction and advanced robotics.
A direct descending pathway informing locomotor networks about tactile sensor movement

Abstract:Much like visually impaired humans use a white-cane, nocturnal insects and mammals use antennae or whiskers for near-range orientation. Stick insects, for example, rely heavily on antennal tactile cues to find footholds and detect obstacles. Antennal contacts can even induce aimed reaching movements. Because tactile sensors are essentially one-dimensional, they must be moved to probe the surrounding space. Sensor movement is thus an essential cue for tactile sensing, which needs to be integrated by thoracic networks for generating appropriate adaptive leg movements. Based on single and double recordings, we describe a descending neural pathway comprising three identified ON- and OFF-type neurons that convey complementary, unambiguous, and short-latency information about antennal movement to thoracic networks in the stick insect. The neurons are sensitive to the velocity of antennal movements across the entire range covered by natural movements, regardless of movement direction and joint angle. Intriguingly, none of them originates from the brain. Instead, they descend from the gnathal ganglion and receive input from antennal mechanoreceptors in this lower region of the CNS. From there, they convey information about antennal movement to the thorax. One of the descending neurons, which is additionally sensitive to substrate vibration, feeds this information back to the brain via an ascending branch. We conclude that descending interneurons with complementary tuning characteristics, gains, input and output regions convey detailed information about antennal movement to thoracic networks. This pathway bypasses higher processing centers in the brain and thus constitutes a shortcut between tactile sensors on the head and the thorax.
Full Soft Capacitive Omnidirectional Tactile Sensor Based on Micro-Spines Electrode and Hemispheric Dielectric Structure

Abstract:Flourishing in recent years, intelligent electronics is desirably pursued in many fields including bio-symbiotic, human physiology regulatory, robot operation, and human–computer interaction. To support this appealing vision, human-like tactile perception is urgently necessary for dexterous object manipulation. In particular, the real-time force perception with strength and orientation simultaneously is critical for intelligent electronic skin. However, it is still very challenging to achieve directional tactile sensing that has eminent properties, and at the same time, has the feasibility for scale expansion. Here, a fully soft capacitive omnidirectional tactile (ODT) sensor was developed based on the structure of MWCNTs coated stripe electrode and Ecoflex hemisphere array dielectric. The theoretical analysis of this structure was conducted for omnidirectional force detection by finite element simulation. Combined with the micro-spine and the hemispheric hills dielectric structure, this sensing structure could achieve omnidirectional detection with high sensitivity (0.306 ± 0.001 kPa−1 under 10 kPa) and a wide response range (2.55 Pa to 160 kPa). Moreover, to overcome the inherent disunity in flexible sensor units due to nano-materials and polymer, machine learning approaches were introduced as a prospective technical routing to recognize various loading angles and finally performed more than 99% recognition accuracy. The practical validity of the design was demonstrated by the detection of human motion, physiological activities, and gripping of a cup, which was evident to have great potential for tactile e-skin for digital medical and soft robotics.

Abstract:Mechanoreceptors in animals and plants play a crucial role in sensing mechanical stimuli such as touch, motion, stretch, and vibration. Learning from the mechanisms of mechanoreceptors may facilitate the development of bionic tactile sensors, leading to higher sensitivity, spatial resolution, and dynamic ranges. However, very little literature has comprehensively discussed the relevance of biological tactile sensing systems and machine-learning-based bionic tactile sensors. This review first introduces the structural features, signal acquisition and transmission mechanisms, and feedback processes of both plant and animal mechanoreceptors, and then summarizes the efforts to develop bionic tactile sensors by mimicking the morphologies and structures of mechanoreceptors in plants and animals. Additionally, the integration of artificial intelligence approaches with these sensors for data processing and analysis are demonstrated, followed by the perspectives on current challenges and future trends in bionic tactile sensors. This review addresses the challenges in developing high-performance tactile sensors by focusing on surface microstructures and biological mechanoreceptors, serving as a valuable reference for developing bionic tactile sensors with enhanced sensitivity and multimodal sensing capabilities. Furthermore, it may benefit the future development of smart sensing systems integrated with artificial intelligence for more precise object and texture recognition.

Abstract:Advancement in human-robot interaction (HRI) is essential for the development of intelligent robots, but there lack paradigms to integrate remote control and tactile sensing for an ideal HRI. In this study, inspired by the platypus beak sense, we propose a bionic electro-mechanosensory finger (EM-Finger) synergizing triboelectric and visuotactile sensing for remote control and tactile perception. A triboelectric sensor array made of a patterned liquid-metal-polymer conductive (LMPC) layer encodes both touchless and tactile interactions with external objects into voltage signals in the air, and responds to electrical stimuli underwater for amphibious wireless communication. Besides, a three-dimensional finger-shaped visuotactile sensing system with the same LMPC layer as a reflector measures contact-induced deformation through marker detection and tracking methods. A bioinspired bimodal deep learning algorithm implements data fusion of triboelectric and visuotactile signals and achieves the classification of 18 common material types under varying contact forces with an accuracy of 94.4%. The amphibious wireless communication capability of the triboelectric sensor array enables touchless HRI in the air and underwater, even in the presence of obstacles, while the whole system realizes high-resolution tactile sensing. By naturally integrating remote contorl and tactile sensing, the proposed EM-Finger could pave the way for enhanced HRI in machine intelligence.

Abstract:Abstract Touch and pain sensations are complementary aspects of daily life that convey crucial information about the environment while also providing protection to our body. Technological advancements in prosthesis design and control mechanisms assist amputees to regain lost function but often they have no meaningful tactile feedback or perception. In the present study, we propose a bio-inspired tactile system with a population of 23 digital afferents: 12 RA-I, 6 SA-I, and 5 nociceptors. Indeed, the functional concept of the nociceptor is implemented on the FPGA for the first time. One of the main features of biological tactile afferents is that their distal axon branches in the skin, creating complex receptive fields. Given these physiological observations, the bio-inspired afferents are randomly connected to the several neighboring mechanoreceptors with different weights to form their own receptive field. To test the performance of the proposed neuromorphic chip in sharpness detection, a robotic system with three-degree of freedom equipped with the tactile sensor indents the 3D-printed objects. Spike responses of the biomimetic afferents are then collected for analysis by rate and temporal coding algorithms. In this way, the impact of the innervation mechanism and collaboration of afferents and nociceptors on sharpness recognition are investigated. Our findings suggest that the synergy between sensory afferents and nociceptors conveys more information about tactile stimuli which in turn leads to the robustness of the proposed neuromorphic system against damage to the taxels or afferents. Moreover, it is illustrated that spiking activity of the biomimetic nociceptors is amplified as the sharpness increases which can be considered as a feedback mechanism for prosthesis protection. This neuromorphic approach advances the development of prosthesis to include the sensory feedback and to distinguish innocuous (non-painful) and noxious (painful) stimuli.

Abstract:Soft interfaces with self-sensing capabilities play an essential role in environment awareness and reaction. The growing overlap between materials and sensory systems has created a myriad of challenges for sensor integration, including the design of a multimodal sensory, simplified system design capable of high spatiotemporal sensing resolution and efficient processing methods. Here we report a bioinspired soft sensor array (BOSSA) that integrates pressure and material sensing capabilities based on the triboelectric effect. Cascaded row + column electrodes embedded in low-modulus porous silicone rubber allow rich information to be captured from the environment and further analyzed by data-driven algorithms (multilayer perceptrons) to extract higher level features. BOSSA demonstrates the ability to identify 10 users (98.9%) and identify the placement or extraction of 10 objects (98.6%). Moreover, its scalable fabrication facilitates large-area sensor arrays with high spatiotemporal resolution and multimodal sensing abilities yet with a less complex system architecture.
