Abstract:In this study, we construct a scalable tubular single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell that using negative pressure (40.52 kPa) to enhance the hydrogen production. The impact of negative pressure on current production, hydrogen recovery, and microbial community of microbial electrolysis cells are investigated. Negative pressure could effectively enhance the hydrogen recovery and inhibit the growth of methanogens. Consequently, the microbial electrolysis cell operated under negative pressure achieves a maximum hydrogen production rate of 7.72 ± 0.06 L L−1 d−1, which is more than four times higher that of reactor running under normal pressure (1.51 ± 0.41 L L−1 d−1). Energy quantification shows that the electrical energy recovery under negative pressure is 146.98%, which is much higher than 95.00% under normal pressure. Therefore, negative pressure control is as effective for increasing hydrogen production and energy recovery in the scalable MEC, and has a great practical application prospect. However, negative pressure cannot knick out methanogens. Once negative pressure is removed, methanogens will quickly take over and after that applying negative pressure again can only partly inhibit methane production.

Abstract:The global shift toward net-zero emissions necessitates resource recovery from wet waste. In this study, we demonstrate the first feasibility of combining pilot-scale microbial electrolytic cells (MECs) with hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) for simultaneous post-hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater (PHW) treatment and efficient hydrogen (H₂) production to meet biocrude upgrading requirements. Long-term single reactor operation revealed that fixed anode potential enabled rapid startup, and low catholyte pH and high salinity were effective in suppression of cathodic methanogenesis and acetogenesis - resulting in high current density of 16.6 A m-2 and 9.3 A m-2 when feeding synthetic wastewater and PHW respectively. Additionally, the anode biofilm exhibited spatial variations in response to local environmental conditions. Onsite parallel or serial operations of multiple MECs showed good performance using actual PHW with a record-high H2 production rate of 0.5 L LR day-1 for MEC over 10 liters scale, and the optimal chemical oxygen demand (COD)-to-H2 yield reached 0.127 kg-H2 per kg-COD, supporting a self-sufficient, closed-loop upgrade to jet fuel.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have garnered significant attention as a promising solution for industrial wastewater treatment, enabling the simultaneous degradation of organic compounds and biohydrogen production. Developing efficient and cost-effective cathodes to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction is central to the success of MECs as a sustainable technology. While numerous lab-scale experiments have been conducted to investigate different cathode materials, the transition to pilot-scale applications remains limited, leaving the actual performance of these scaled-up cathodes largely unknown. In this study, nickel-foam and stainless-steel wool cathodes were employed as catalysts to critically assess hydrogen production in a 150 L MEC pilot plant treating sugar-based industrial wastewater. Continuous hydrogen production was achieved in the reactor for more than 80 days, with a maximum COD removal efficiency of 40 %. Nickel-foam cathodes significantly enhanced hydrogen production and energy efficiency at non-limiting substrate concentration, yielding the maximum hydrogen production ever reported at pilot-scale (19.07 ± 0.46 L H2 m-2 d-1 and 0.21 ± 0.01 m3 m-3 d-1). This is a 3.0-fold improve in hydrogen production compared to the previous stainless-steel wool cathode. On the other hand, the higher price of Ni-foam compared to stainless-steel should also be considered, which may constrain its use in real applications. By carefully analysing the energy balance of the system, this study demonstrates that MECs have the potential to be net energy producers, in addition to effectively oxidize organic matter in wastewater. While higher applied potentials led to increased energy requirements, they also resulted in enhanced hydrogen production. For our system, a conservative applied potential range from 0.9 to 1.0 V was found to be optimal. Finally, the microbial community established on the anode was found to be a syntrophic consortium of exoelectrogenic and fermentative bacteria, predominantly Geobacter and Bacteroides, which appeared to be well-suited to transform complex organic matter into hydrogen.

Abstract:The septic tank is the most commonly used decentralized wastewater treatment systems for household wastewater treatment in on-site applications. The removal rate of various pollutants is lower in different septic tank configurations. The integration of a microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) into septic tank or biofilm-based reactors can be a green and sustainable technology for household wastewater treatment and energy production. In this study, a 50-L septic tank was converted into a 50-L MEC coupled with biofilm-based reactor for simultaneous household wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. The biofilm-based reactor was integrated by an anaerobic packed-bed biofilm reactor (APBBR) and an aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor (aeMBBR). The MEC/APBBR/aeMBBR was evaluated at different organic loading rates (OLRs) by applying voltage of 0.7 and 1.0 V. Result showed that the increase of OLRs from 0.2 to 0.44 kg COD/m 3 d did not affect organic matter removals. Nutrient and solids removal decreased with increasing OLR up to 0.44 kg COD/m 3 d. Global removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH 4 + ), total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal ranged from 81 to 84%, 84 to 85%, 53 to 68%, 88 to 98%, 11 to 30% and 76 to 88% respectively, was obtained in this study. The current density generated in the MEC from 0 to 0.41 A/m 2 contributed to an increase in hydrogen production and pollutants removal. The maximum volumetric hydrogen production rate obtained in the MEC was 0.007 L/Ld (0.072 L/d). The integration of the MEC into biofilm-based reactors applying a voltage of 1.0 V generated different bioelectrochemical nitrogen and phosphorus transformations within the MEC, allowing a simultaneous denitrification-nitrification process with phosphorus removal.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop an efficient strategy for enhancing H2 production in the single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) using food waste leachate as a substrate. Different pH (8.5, 9.5, 10.5, and 11.2), applied voltage (0.8, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.3, and 2.4 V) and negative pressure control (-50 kPa) were tested in the single-chamber MEC. Suitable pH adjustment could greatly promote electricity generation and H2 production rather than negative pressure control. Under pH of 11.5 and 2.4 V, the maximum current density reached 121.9 ± 10.9 A/m³ with an average H2 concentration of 91.9 ± 3.2% in a 1.2-L single-chamber MEC within 30 continuous cycles of operation (∼607 h), which was constructed with carbon brushes as the anode and stainless steel brushes as the cathode. The maximum H2 production rate reached 853.2 ± 70.3 L/m³•d with an H2 yield of 26.3 mmol•H2/g•COD. The COD removal of 68.3 ± 6.8% and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix spectra of the effluent in the MEC within 21 ± 3h indicated efficient organics degradation in the leachate. Our results should provide a promising way to enhance the H2 production of MEC during leachate treatment.

Abstract:The use of electrochemically active bacteria to break down organic matter, combined with the addition of a small voltage (>0.2 V in practice) in specially designed microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), can result in a high yield of hydrogen gas. While microbial electrolysis was invented only a few years ago, rapid developments have led to hydrogen yields approaching 100%, energy yields based on electrical energy input many times greater than that possible by water electrolysis, and increased gas production rates. MECs used to make hydrogen gas are similar in design to microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that produce electricity, but there are important differences in architecture and analytical methods used to evaluate performance. We review here the materials, architectures, performance, and energy efficiencies of these MEC systems that show promise as a method for renewable and sustainable energy production, and wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Molecular hydrogen, a valuable clean energy fuel and industrial feedstock, is commonly produced by steam reforming of fossil fuels, a process that results in the co-generation of CO2. Strategies that produce H2 without CO2 emissions focus on water-splitting powered by solar or wind energy. Here, we introduce a new approach in which energy derived from the oxidation of waste organic matter is used to subsidize the electrical energy consumed by electrochemical H2 generation. The primary gas product is H2, with minimal O2 contamination, avoiding the purification step required for conventional water electrolysis. The energy efficiency (i.e., energy from H2 combustion ÷ input electrical energy × 100%) ranges from 214% to 304%. We also demonstrate a sustained cycling operation with concomitant treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater. These findings open the door to recovery of H2 from other dilute reservoirs of organic matter, such as marine sediment.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have emerged as a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen production from wastewater treatment. An MEC consists of a microbial anode and a hydrogen evolution cathode, where microorganisms in the anode oxidize organic compounds, allowing the cathodic hydrogen production at lower potentials compared to abiotic electrolysis. The present study focuses on optimizing the catholyte composition and configuration in a MEC reactor to maximize hydrogen production rates while minimizing energy consumption. Indeed, buffer solutions of HCO 3 - , HPO 4 2- , and H 2 PO 4 - at different concentrations and operation mode were tested as catholytes analysing hydrogen production rates and energy consumptions of the process. The results demonstrate the stability of the anodic electroactive biofilm over a 220-day period, achieving consistent COD removal and hydrogen production. The findings reveal that the catholyte composition and operating mode significantly affect the cathodic performances of the MEC. Indeed, catholytes with higher buffer concentrations allow for a limited catholyte alkalinisation improving hydrogen production rates while a low buffer solution promotes an increase in process energy consumption. Bicarbonate buffer solution utilized under batch operation mode showed the better performances for hydrogen production at the cathodic side of MECs showing a higher cathodic coulombic efficiency coupled with stable pH levels and cathodic potentials. Overall, this research demonstrates the potential of MECs for sustainable hydrogen production and highlights the importance of optimizing catholyte composition and operating mode to increase energy efficiency of process.

Abstract:Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have the potential to deliver energy-neutral wastewater treatment. Pilot-scale tests have proven that they can operate at low temperatures with real wastewaters. However, volumetric treatment rates (VTRs) have been low, reducing the ability for this technology to compete with activated sludge (AS). This paper describes a pilot-scale microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) operated in continuous flow for 6 months. The reactor was fed return sludge liquor, the concentrated filtrate of anaerobic digestion sludge that has a high chemical oxygen demand (COD). The use of a wastewater with increased soluble organics, along with optimisation of the hydraulic retention time (HRT), resulted in the highest VTR achieved by a pilot-scale MEC treating real wastewater. Peak HRT was 0.5-days, resulting in an average VTR of 3.82 kgCOD/m3∙day and a 55% COD removal efficiency. Finally, using the data obtained, a direct analysis of the potential savings from the reduced loading on AS was then made. Theoretical calculation of the required tank size, with the estimated costs and savings, indicates that the use of an MEC as a return sludge liquor pre-treatment technique could result in an industrially viable system.

Abstract:In a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), hydrolysate produced by hydrothermal treatment of wheat straw was used for hydrogen production during selective recovery of phenols. The average H₂ production rate was 0.61 m³ H₂/m³ MEC·day and equivalent to a rate of 0.40 kg COD/m³ MEC·day. The microbial community in the anode biofilm was adapted by establishment of xylose-degrading bacteria of the Bacteriodetes phylum (16%) and Geobacter sulfurreducens (49%). During the process, 61% of the chemical oxygen demand was removed as hydrogen at 64% yield. The total energy production yield was 78% considering the energy content in the consumed compounds and the cell voltage of 0.7 V. The highest hydrogen production was equivalent to 0.8 kg COD/m³ MEC·day and was obtained at pH 7-8 and 25°C. Accumulation of 53% w/v phenolic compounds in the liquor was obtained by stepwise addition of the hydrolysate during simultaneous production of hydrogen from consumption of 95% for the hemicellulose and 100% of the fatty acids. Final calculations showed that hydrolysate produced from 1 kg wheat straw was upgraded by means of the MEC to 22 g hydrogen (266 L), 8 g xylan, and 9 g polyphenolics for potential utilization in biobased materials.

Abstract:Increased generation of food waste (FW) poses significant risks to the social environment, and therefore it is critical that efficient technology be developed for effective waste valorization. This study used an integrated reactor to combine single-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) treatment and anaerobic digestion (AD) to achieve efficient hydrogen recovery using FW as substrate. Hydrogen production during continuous AD-MEC operation (511.02 ml H-2 g(-1) VS) was higher than that achieved by AD (49.39 ml H-2 g(-1) VS). The hydrogen recovery and electrical energy recovery in AD-MEC were as high as 96% and 238.7 +/- 5.8%, respectively. To explore the mechanism of hydrogen production increase, the main components of FW [lipids, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), carbohydrates, and protein] were analyzed to investigate the utilization of organic matter. Compared with AD treatment, the removal rates of carbohydrates and proteins in the soluble phase in AD-MEC were increased by 4 times and 2.3 times, respectively. The removal of VFAs by AD-MEC was increased by 4.7 times, which indicated that the AD reactor coupled with MEC technology improved the utilization of the main organic components and thus increased hydrogen production. Sustainable and Efficient Biohydrogen Production Via Electrohydrogenesis

Abstract:Hydrogen gas has tremendous potential as an environmentally acceptable energy carrier for vehicles, but most hydrogen is generated from nonrenewable fossil fuels such as natural gas. Here, we show that efficient and sustainable hydrogen production is possible from any type of biodegradable organic matter by electrohydrogenesis. In this process, protons and electrons released by exoelectrogenic bacteria in specially designed reactors (based on modifying microbial fuel cells) are catalyzed to form hydrogen gas through the addition of a small voltage to the circuit. By improving the materials and reactor architecture, hydrogen gas was produced at yields of 2.01–3.95 mol/mol (50–99% of the theoretical maximum) at applied voltages of 0.2 to 0.8 V using acetic acid, a typical dead-end product of glucose or cellulose fermentation. At an applied voltage of 0.6 V, the overall energy efficiency of the process was 288% based solely on electricity applied, and 82% when the heat of combustion of acetic acid was included in the energy balance, at a gas production rate of 1.1 m 3 of H 2 per cubic meter of reactor per day. Direct high-yield hydrogen gas production was further demonstrated by using glucose, several volatile acids (acetic, butyric, lactic, propionic, and valeric), and cellulose at maximum stoichiometric yields of 54–91% and overall energy efficiencies of 64–82%. This electrohydrogenic process thus provides a highly efficient route for producing hydrogen gas from renewable and carbon-neutral biomass resources.
Enhancing hydrogen production through anode fed-batch mode and controlled cell voltage in a microbial electrolysis cell fully catalysed by microorganisms

Abstract:A microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) fully catalysed by microorganisms is an attractive technology because it incorporates the state-of-the-art concept of converting organic waste to hydrogen with less external energy input than conventional electrolysers. In this work, the impact of the anode feed mode on the production of hydrogen by the biocathode was studied. In the first part, three feed modes and MEC performance in terms of hydrogen production were evaluated. The results showed the highest hydrogen production under the continuous mode (14.6 ± 0.4), followed by the fed-batch (12.7 ± 0.4) and batch (0 L m-2 cathode day-1) modes. On one hand, the continuous mode only increased by 15% even though the hydraulic retention time (HRT) (2.78 h) was lower than the fed-batch mode (HRT 5 h). A total replacement (fed-batch) rather than a constant mix of existing anolyte and fresh medium (continuous) was preferable. On the other hand, no hydrogen was produced in batch mode due to the extensive HRT (24 h) and bioanode starvation. In the second part, the fed-batch mode was further evaluated using a chronoamperometry method under a range of applied cell voltages of 0.3-1.6 V. Based on the potential evolution at the electrodes, three main regions were identified depending on the applied cell voltages: the cathode activation (<0.8 V), transition (0.8-1.1 V), and anode limitation (>1.1 V) regions. The maximum hydrogen production recorded was 12.1 ± 2.1 L m-2 cathode day-1 at 1.0 V applied voltage when the oxidation and reduction reactions at the anode and cathode were optimal (2.38 ± 0.61 A m-2). Microbial community analysis of the biocathode revealed that Alpha-, and Deltaproteobacteria were dominant in the samples with >70% abundance. At the genus level, Desulfovibrio sp. was the most abundant in the samples, showing that these microbes may be responsible for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The presence of Thomsen-Friedenreich (T) antigen has been demonstrated in a variety of cancers, including bladder tumors. However, not many reports are available on this subject. We evaluated serum anti-T antibody titer in bladder tumor patients by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the following results were obtained. 1. Bladder tumor patients had depressed levels of anti-T IgM antibody. 2. Levels of anti-T IgG antibody in bladder tumor patients were significantly increased. (p<0.05) 3. No correlation was found between anti-T IgA antibody titers and the presence of bladder tumor.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) have demonstrated high-rate H 2 production while concurrently treating wastewater, but the transition in scale from laboratory research to systems that can be practically applied has encountered challenges. It has been more than a decade since the first pilot-scale MEC was reported, and in recent years, many attempts have been made to overcome the barriers and move the technology to the market. This study provided a detailed analysis of MEC scale-up efforts and summarized the key factors that should be considered to further develop the technology. We compared the major scale-up configurations and systematically evaluated their performance from both technical and economic perspectives. We characterized how system scale-up impacts the key performance metrics such as volumetric current density and H 2 production rate, and we proposed methods to evaluate and optimize system design and fabrication. In addition, preliminary techno-economic analysis indicates that MECs can be profitable in many different market scenarios with or without subsidies. We also provide perspectives on future development needed to transition MEC technology to the marketplace.

Abstract:The feasibility and performance of continuous hydrogen production from herbal wastewater via anaerobic fermentation was investigated at different organic loading rates (OLRs) (from 12 to 96 kg chemical oxygen demand [COD]·L−1·day−1) in diatomite‐immobilized sludge reactor and suspended sludge reactor. Results indicated that the diatomite‐immobilized sludge reactor presented more efficient and stable performance than suspended sludge reactor in terms of hydrogen production rate. In diatomite‐immobilized sludge reactor, the highest hydrogen production rate of 11.17 ± 0.45 mmol·L−1·h−1 was achieved at the optimum OLR of 72‐kg COD·L−1·day−1. The metabolic route of acetate acid and butyrate acid production at low OLR (from 12‐ to 40‐kg COD·L−1·day−1) was modified to be ethanol production by an increase in OLR to 56 and 72‐kg COD·L−1·day−1, which was reflected by the distribution of bacterial community. The maximum energy recovery efficiency by dual production of hydrogen and ethanol was determined to be 31.2 kJ·L−1·h−1 at OLR of 72‐kg COD·L−1·day−1.

Abstract:The high energy consumption of traditional water splitting to produce hydrogen is mainly due to complex oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where low-economic-value O2 gas is generated. Meanwhile, cogeneration of H2 and O2 may result in the formation of an explosive H2/O2 gas mixture due to gas crossover. Considering these factors, a favorable anodic oxidation reaction is employed to replace OER, which not only reduces the voltage for H2 production at the cathode and avoids H2/O2 gas mixture but also generates value-added products at the anode. In recent years, this innovative strategy that combines anodic oxidation for H2 production has received intensive attention in the field of electrocatalysis. In this review, the latest research progress of a coupled hydrogen production system with pollutant degradation/upgrading is systematically introduced. Firstly, wastewater purification via anodic reaction, which produces free radicals instead of OER for pollutant degradation, is systematically presented. Then, the coupled system that allows for pollutant refining into high-value-added products combined with hydrogen production is displayed. Thirdly, the photoelectrical system for pollutant degradation and upgrade are briefly introduced. Finally, this review also discusses the challenges and future perspectives of this coupled system.

Abstract:AbstractThe organic matter consumption and hydrogen production rate were evaluated in a two-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). Three chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration levels (400, 600 and 1200 mg/L) were tested. The COD was composed of a mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) present in the effluent of a dark fermentation process. The two levels of voltage studied were 350 and 550 mV. The performance of the MEC was evaluated using either an anionic (AEM) or cationic exchange membrane (CEM). The robustness of the MEC was tested using two dark fermentation effluents, one with VFAs and another containing 1100 mg/L glucose. The highest production rates (81 mL/L/day) were obtained with 550 mV, and 85 % COD consumption was attained. No considerable differences in the hydrogen production rate were observed when the COD was increased from 400 to 1200 mg/L using 550 mV. However, maximal hydrogen production rates were obtained with the lower COD concentration using 350 mV. Neither the employment of AEM and CEM nor the change from synthetic substrate to real substrate resulted in remarkable changes in MEC performance. The substrate containing glucose was more slowly degraded because glucose was first transformed into VFAs, and then the VFAs were consumed to produce hydrogen. In this case, methane and carbon dioxide were detected.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a product that has been on the rise over the past decade. Its primary use is as a raw material in industry, but it is also emerging as a provider of electrical power and fuel. A laboratory-scale electrolysis cell was used with seawater employing stainless steel electrodes. Hydrogen production was measured using an electrochemical sensor and an alternating current power source to measure current intensity. A voltage was established in a range of 1,5 to 20 V as the operating condition. The current density (j) behavior in the electrolysis cell increased with increasing applied voltage. Current density ranged from 0,07 A/cm2 to 3,15 A/cm2 . Hydrogen production efficiency was achieved from 2,5 V onwards, indicating that reaching 1000 ppmH2 was accomplished in 53 and 34 seconds at voltages of 15 and 20 V, respectively. The results demonstrate direct electrolysis with seawater and its utilization with a renewable energy source
