Abstract:Nobel Prize laureate P.J.E. Peebles [24] has emphasized the importance and difficulties of studying the large scale clustering of matter in cosmology. Nonlinear gravitational instability plays a central role in understanding the clustering of matter and the formation of nonlinear structures in the universe and stellar systems. However, there is no rigorous result on the nonlinear analysis of this instability except for some particular exact solutions without pressure, and numerical and phenomenological approaches. Both Rendall [26] and Mukhanov [21] have highlighted the challenge posed by nonlinear gravitational instability with effective pressure. This has been a longstanding open problem in astrophysics for over a century since the occurrence of linearized Jeans instabilities in Newtonian universes in 1902. This article contributes to a fully nonlinear analysis of the gravitational instability for the Euler-Possion system which models expanding Newtonian universes with inhomogeneous density and pressure. The exponential or finite-time increasing blowups of the density contrast $\varrho$ can be determined, which may account for the considerably faster growth rate of nonlinear structures observed in astrophysics than that suggested by the classical Jeans instability. We believe this is the first rigorous result for the nonlinear Jeans instability with effective pressure and the method is concise and robust.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the analytical problem of nonlinear gravitational instability, especially in an expanding Newtonian universe with inhomogeneous density and pressure. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to analyze the gravitational instability phenomenon in a nonlinear framework, which is crucial in cosmology for understanding the large - scale clustering of matter and the formation of nonlinear structures. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the analysis of linearized gravitational instability, such as Jeans instability, and the analytical results in the nonlinear case are limited. Therefore, this paper attempts to fill this gap and provide a fully nonlinear analytical method by studying the Euler - Poisson system. ### Main problems The main problems of the paper are: 1. Given the inhomogeneous but spherically symmetric perturbation (1.6) in the initial state and the deviation data (1.8), it is necessary to study whether the Newtonian universe solutions (1.1) - (1.5) are stable or unstable. 2. If the Newtonian universe solutions are unstable, it is necessary to examine the behavior of the perturbed solutions under the initial perturbation. 3. If the perturbed solutions explode (that is, the density contrast and its derivative tend to infinity in a finite time), it is necessary to study the growth rate of the perturbed solutions. ### Research methods To answer the above questions, the author adopts the following methods: - **Reference solution**: Use the known homogeneous perturbation solutions (1.13) - (1.14) as reference solutions. - **Fuchsian system**: Convert the Euler - Poisson system into a Fuchsian system, which is a singularity equation and is suitable for studying long - time behavior. - **Energy method**: Use the energy method for normalization processing to simplify the proof process. - **Coordinate transformation**: Introduce new space - time coordinates, especially the compactified time variable \( \tau \), to meet the singularity requirements of the Fuchsian system. ### Main conclusions - **Stability analysis**: Under the given assumptions, if the initial data satisfy certain small perturbation conditions (1.22), then there exists a solution (\( \rho, v_i, s, \phi \)) belonging to \( C^2([1, t_m)\times\mathbb{R}^3) \), and this solution exhibits exponentially self - increasing density until explosion. - **Estimation of density contrast and velocity**: Give detailed estimations (1.23) - (1.26) of the density contrast \( \rho \) and the velocity \( v_i \). - **Expression of entropy**: The entropy \( s \) can be expressed in a specific form (1.27). - **Explosion time**: The density contrast \( \rho \) and its derivative \( \partial_t\rho \) explode at \( t = t_m \) (1.28). - **Parameter conditions**: If the parameter \( \gamma> 1/3 \) in the initial data, then there exists a finite time \( t_m <\infty \) such that the density contrast \( \rho \) and its derivative \( \partial_t\rho \) explode in a finite time. ### Significance This research provides for the first time strict results of nonlinear Jeans instability with effective pressure, which is of great significance for understanding the rapid formation of nonlinear structures in the universe. In addition, this method is concise and robust, providing new tools and ideas for future related research.
