Abstract:We propose a new point of view on quantum cohomology, strongly motivated by the work of Givental and Dubrovin, but closer to differential geometry than the existing approaches. The central object is the D-module which "quantizes" a commutative algebra associated to the (uncompactified) space of rational curves. A standard loop group factorization procedure converts the D-module to Givental's D-module and the commutative algebra to the quantum cohomology algebra. We apply this only to the small quantum cohomology of full flag manifolds and semi-positive toric manifolds, but even in these cases the method is effective. In particular it gives an algorithm (requiring construction of a Groebner basis and solution of a system of o.d.e.) for the quantum product.

Quantization of locally compact groups associated with essentially bijective $1$-cocycles

Abstract:Given an extension $0\to V\to G\to Q\to1$ of locally compact groups, with $V$ abelian, and a compatible essentially bijective $1$-cocycle $\eta\colon Q\to\hat V$, we define a dual unitary $2$-cocycle on $G$ and show that the associated deformation of $\hat G$ is a cocycle bicrossed product defined by a matched pair of subgroups of $Q\ltimes\hat V$. We also discuss an interpretation of our construction from the point of view of Kac cohomology for matched pairs. Our setup generalizes that of Etingof and Gelaki for finite groups and its extension due to Ben David and Ginosar, as well as our earlier work on locally compact groups satisfying the dual orbit condition. In particular, we get a locally compact quantum group from every involutive nondegenerate set-theoretical solution of the Yang--Baxter equation, or more generally, from every brace structure. On the technical side, the key new points are constructions of an irreducible projective representation of $G$ on $L^2(Q)$ and a unitary quantization map $L^2(G)\to{\rm HS}(L^2(Q))$ of Kohn--Nirenberg type.

Abstract:Within the framework of unitary easy quantum groups, we study an analogue of Brauer's Schur-Weyl approach to the representation theory of the orthogonal group. We consider concrete combinatorial categories whose morphisms are formed by partitions of finite sets into disjoint subsets of cardinality two; the points of these sets are colored black or white. These categories correspond to "half-liberated easy" interpolations between the unitary group and Wang's quantum counterpart. We complete the classification of all such categories demonstrating that the subcategories of a certain natural halfway point are equivalent to additive subsemigroups of the natural numbers; the categories above this halfway point have been classified in a preceding article. We achieve this using combinatorial means exclusively. Our work reveals that the half-liberation procedure is quite different from what was previously known from the orthogonal case.

Abstract:Given a locally compact group such that V is Abelian and such that the action of Q on the Pontryagin dual has a free orbit of full measure, we construct a family of unitary dual 2-cocycles (aka non-formal Drinfel'd twists) whose equivalence classes are parametrized by cohomology classes . We prove that the associated locally compact quantum groups are isomorphic to cocycle bicrossed product quantum groups associated with a pair of subgroups of the dual semidirect product , both isomorphic to Q , and to a pentagonal cocycle explicitly given in terms of the group cocycle .

On some algebraic and geometric aspects of the quantum unitary group

Abstract:Consider the compact quantum group $U_q(2)$, where $q$ is a non-zero complex deformation parameter such that $|q|\neq 1$. Let $C(U_q(2))$ denote the underlying $C^*$-algebra of the compact quantum group $U_q(2)$. We prove that if $q$ is a non-real complex number and $q^\prime$ is real, then the underlying $C^*$-algebras $C(U_q(2))$ and $C(U_{q^\prime}(2))$ are non-isomorphic. This is in sharp contrast with the case of braided $SU_q(2)$, introduced earlier by Woronowicz et al., where $q$ is a non-zero complex deformation parameter. In another direction, on a geometric aspect of $U_q(2)$, we introduce torus action on the $C^*$-algebra $C(U_q(2))$ and obtain a $C^*$-dynamical system $(C(U_q(2)),\mathbb{T}^3,\alpha)$. We construct a $\mathbb{T}^3$-equivariant spectral triple for $U_q(2)$ that is even and $3^+$-summable. It is shown that the Dirac operator is K-homologically nontrivial.

Abstract:We show that if $H$ is an almost normal subgroup of $G$ such that both $H$ and $G$ are of type $VFP$ and vcd($G$) = vcd($H$) + 1, then $G$ is the fundamental group of a graph of groups in which all vertex and edge groups are commensurable to $H$. We also investigate almost normal subgroups of one-relator groups and duality groups.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the Lie algebra structure of the first relative Hochschild cohomology and its relation with the relative notion of fundamental group. Let $A,B$ be finite-dimensional basic $k$-algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, such that $Q_B$ is a subquiver of $Q_A$. We show that if the complement of $Q_A$ by the arrows of $Q_B$ is a simple directed graph, then the first relative Hochschild cohomology $\text{HH}^1(A|B)$ is a solvable Lie algebra. We also compute the Lie algebra structure of the first relative Hochschild cohomology for radical square zero algebras and for dual extension algebras of directed monomial algebras. Finally, we introduce the notion of fundamental group for a pair of an algebra $A$ and a subalgebra $B$ and we construct the relative version of the map from the dual fundamental group into the first Hochschild cohomology.

Abstract:We find a finite free resolution of the counit of the free unitary quantum groups of van Daele and Wang and, more generally, Bichon's universal cosovereign Hopf algebras with a generic parameter matrix. This allows us to compute Hochschild cohomology with 1-dimensional coefficients for all these Hopf algebras. In fact, the resolutions can be endowed with a Yetter-Drinfeld structure. General results of Bichon then allow us to compute also the corresponding bialgebra cohomologies. Finding the resolution rests on two pillars. We take as a starting point the resolution for the free orthogonal quantum group presented by Collins, Härtel, and Thom or its algebraic generalization to quantum symmetry groups of bilinear forms due to Bichon. Then we make use of the fact that the free unitary quantum groups and some of its non-Kac versions can be realized as a glued free product of a (non-Kac) free orthogonal quantum group with $\mathbb Z_2$, the finite group of order 2. To obtain the resolution also for more general universal cosovereign Hopf algebras, we extend Gromada's proof from compact quantum groups to the framework of matrix Hopf algebras. As a byproduct of this approach, we also obtain a projective resolution for the freely modified bistochastic quantum groups. Only a special subclass of free unitary quantum groups and universal cosovereign Hopf algebras decompose as a glued free product in the described way. In order to verify that the sequence we found is a free resolution in general (as long as the parameter matrix is generic, two conditions which are automatically fulfilled in the free unitary quantum group case), we use the theory of Hopf bi-Galois objects and Bichon's results on monoidal equivalences between the categories of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over universal cosovereign Hopf algebras for different parameter matrices.

Derivations and the first Hochschild cohomology group of the quantum grassmannian

Abstract:We calculate the derivations and the first Hochschild cohomology group of the quantum grassmannian over a field of characteristic zero in the generic case when the deformation parameter is not a root of unity. Using graded techniques and two special homogeneous normal elements of the quantum grassmannian, we reduce the problem to computing derivations of the quantum grassmannian that act trivially on these two normal elements. We then use the dehomogenisation equality which shows that a localisation of the quantum grassmannian is equal to a skew Laurent extension of quantum matrices. This equality is used to connect derivations of the quantum grassmannian with those of quantum matrices. More precisely, again using graded techniques, we show that derivations of the quantum grassmannian that act trivially on our two normal elements restrict to homogeneous derivations of quantum matrices. The derivations of quantum matrices are known in the square case and technical details needed to deal with the general case are given in an appendix. This allows us to explicitly describe the first Hochschild cohomology group of the quantum grassmannian.

Abstract:We introduce cohomology and deformation theories for a bialgebra A (over a commutative unital ring k) such that the second cohomology group is the space of infinitesimal deformations. Our theory gives a natural identification between the underlying k-modules of the original and the deformed bialgebra. Certain explicit deformation formulas are given for the construction of quantum groups--i.e., Hopf algebras that are neither commutative nor cocommutative (whether or not they arise from quantum Yang-Baxter operators). These formulas yield, in particular, all GLq(n) and SLq(n) as deformations of GL(n) and SL(n). Using a Hodge decomposition of the underlying cochain complex, we compute our cohomology for GL(n). With this, we show that every deformation of GL(n) is equivalent to one in which the comultiplication is unchanged, not merely on elements of degree one but on all elements (settling in the strongest way a decade-old conjecture) and in which the quantum determinant, as an element of the underlying k-module, is identical with the usual one.

Abstract:Abstract Let $\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}})\subseteq k\,{\mathcal{G}}$ be the principal block algebra of the group algebra $k\,{\mathcal{G}}$ of an infinitesimal group scheme ${\mathcal{G}}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic ${\operatorname{char}}(k)=:p\geq 3$. We calculate the restricted Lie algebra structure of the first Hochschild cohomology ${\mathcal{L}}:={\operatorname{H}}^1(\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}}),\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}}))$ whenever $\mathscr{B}_0({\mathcal{G}})$ has finite representation type. As a consequence, we prove that the complexity of the trivial ${\mathcal{G}}$-module $k$ coincides with the maximal toral rank of ${\mathcal{L}}$.

Abstract:We develop a $\mathtt{q}$-analogue of the theory of conjugation equivariant $\mathcal D$-modules on a complex reductive group $G$. In particular, we define quantum Hotta-Kashiwara modules and compute their endomorphism algebras. We use the Schur-Weyl functor of the second author, and develop tools from the corresponding double affine Hecke algebra to study this category in the cases $G=GL_N$ and $SL_N$. Our results also have an interpretation in skein theory (explored further in a sequel paper), namely a computation of the $GL_N$ and $SL_N$-skein algebra of the 2-torus.

On the generic part of the cohomology of non-compact unitary Shimura varieties

Abstract:We prove that the generic part of the mod l cohomology of Shimura varieties associated to quasi-split unitary groups of even dimension is concentrated above the middle degree, extending our previous work to a non-compact case. The result applies even to Eisenstein cohomology classes coming from the locally symmetric space of the general linear group, and has been used in joint work with Allen, Calegari, Gee, Helm, Le Hung, Newton, Taylor and Thorne to get good control on these classes and deduce potential automorphy theorems without any self-duality hypothesis. Our main geometric result is a computation of the fibers of the Hodge-Tate period map on compactified Shimura varieties, in terms of similarly compactified Igusa varieties.

Cohomology of the universal centralizers I: the adjoint group case

Abstract:We compute the rational cohomology of the universal centralizer $J_G$ (also known as the Toda system or BFM space) for a complex (connected) semisimple group $G$ of adjoint form. While $J_G$ exhibits interesting and increasingly complex topology as the rank of $G$ rises, its rational cohomology is surprisingly simple--it coincides with that of a point. In a subsequent work [Jin2], we will extend this analysis to the case of $J_G$ for general semisimple $G$. In particular, we will show that its rational cohomology has pure Hodge structure.

Abstract:This paper shows that the integral equivariant cohomology Chern numbers completely determine the equivariant geometric unitary bordism classes of closed unitary $G$-manifolds, which gives an affirmative answer to the conjecture posed by Guillemin--Ginzburg--Karshon in [20, Remark H.5, $\S3$, Appendix H], where $G$ is a torus. As a further application, we also obtain a satisfactory solution of [20, Question (A), $\S1.1$, Appendix H] on unitary Hamiltonian $G$-manifolds. Our key ingredients in the proof are the universal toric genus defined by Buchstaber--Panov--Ray and the Kronecker pairing of bordism and cobordism. Our approach heavily exploits Quillen's geometric interpretation of homotopic unitary cobordism theory. Moreover, this method can also be applied to the study of $({\Bbb Z}_2)^k$-equivariant unoriented bordism and can still derive the classical result of tom Dieck.
Second bounded cohomology of groups acting on $1$-manifolds and applications to spectrum problems

Abstract:We prove a general criterion for the vanishing of second bounded cohomology (with trivial real coefficients) for groups that admit an action satisfying certain mild hypotheses. This leads to new computations of the second bounded cohomology for a large class of groups of homeomorphisms of $1$-manifolds, and a plethora of applications. First, we demonstrate that the finitely presented and nonamenable group $G_0$ constructed by the second author with Justin Moore satisfies that every subgroup has vanishing second bounded cohomology. This provides the first solution to a homological version of the von Neumann--Day Problem, posed by Calegari. Next, we develop a technical refinement of our criterion to demonstrate the existence of finitely generated non-indicable (even simple) left orderable groups with vanishing second bounded cohomology. This answers Question 8 from the 2018 ICM proceedings article of Navas. Then we provide the first examples of finitely presented groups whose spectrum of stable commutator length contains algebraic irrationals, answering a question of Calegari. Finally, we provide the first examples of manifolds whose simplicial volumes are algebraic and irrational, as further evidence towards a conjecture of Heuer and Löh.
