Abstract:We prove a general solvable subgroup theorem in terms of length functions. As applications, we obtain a solvable subgroup theorem in dynamical systems: any solvable group of finite Hirsch length acting on a smooth manifold with uniformly positive topological entropies must be virtually $\mathbb{Z}^n$.

Abstract:The topological entropy of a topological dynamical system, introduced in a foundational paper by Adler, Konheim and McAndrew [Trans. Am. Math. Soc., 1965], is a nonnegative number that measures the uncertainty or disorder of the system. Comparing with positive entropy systems, zero entropy systems are much less understood. In order to distinguish between zero entropy systems, Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] introduced the concept of maximal pattern entropy of a topological dynamical system. At the heart of their analysis is a Sauer-Shelah type lemma. In the present paper, we provide a shorter and more conceptual proof of a strengthening of this lemma, and discuss its surprising connection between dynamical system, combinatorics and a recent breakthrough in communication complexity. We also improve one of the main results of Huang and Ye on the maximal pattern entropy of zero-dimensional systems, by proving a new Sauer-Shelah type lemma, which unifies and enhances various extremal results on VC-dimension, Natarajan dimension and Steele dimension.

Abstract:In this short note, for countably infinite amenable group actions, we provide topological proofs for the following results: Bowen topological entropy (dimensional entropy) of the whole space equals the usual topological entropy along tempered Følner sequences; the Hausdorff dimension of an amenable subshift (for certain metric associated to some Følner sequence) equals its topological entropy. This answers questions by Zheng and Chen (Israel Journal of Mathematics 212 (2016), 895-911) and Simpson (Theory Comput. Syst. 56 (2015), 527-543).

Abstract:We discuss the finiteness of the topological entropy of continuous endomorphims for some classes of locally compact groups. Firstly, we focus on the abelian case, imposing the condition of being compactly generated, and note an interesting behaviour of slender groups. Secondly, we remove the condition of being abelian and consider nilpotent periodic locally compact $p$-groups ($p$ prime), reducing the computations to the case of Sylow $p$-subgroups. Finally, we investigate locally compact Heisenberg $p$-groups $\mathbb{H}_{n}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ on the field $\mathbb{Q}_{p}$ of the $p$-adic rationals with $n$ arbitrary positive integer.

Like in the [Formula: see text]-action cases we define the notion of local entropy and by it we bound the difference between metric entropy and that of a partition, and bound the difference between topological entropy and that of a separated set, which generalize Theorems 1(1) and 1(2) in [Newhouse, 1989] from [Formula: see text]-actions to amenable group actions. We further prove that the entropy function [Formula: see text] is upper semi-continuous on [Formula: see text] for an asymptotic entropy expansive amenable group action.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly elucidate a close relationship between the topological entropy and mean dimension theory for actions of polynomial growth groups. We show that metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup are equal to its topological entropy multiplied by the growth rate of the subgroup. Meanwhile, we also prove the above result holds for the rate distortion dimension of subshifts with respect to the lower rank subgroup and measure entropy. Furthermore, some relevant examples are indicated.

Abstract:We initiate a study of asymptotic dimension for locally compact groups. This notion extends the existing invariant for discrete groups and is shown to be finite for a large class of residually compact groups. Along the way, the notion of Hirsch length is extended to topological groups and classical results of Hirsch and Malcev are extended using a topological version of the Poincaré lemma. We show that polycyclic-by-compact groups and compactly generated, topologically virtually nilpotent groups are residually compact, and that compactly generated nilpotent groups are polycyclic-by-compact. We prove that for compactly generated, solvable-by-compact groups the asymptotic dimension is majorized by the Hirsch length, and equality holds for polycyclic-by-compact groups. We extend the class of elementary amenable groups beyond the discrete case and show that topologically elementary amenable groups with finite Hirsch length have finite asymptotic dimension. We prove that a topologically elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length with no nontrivial locally elliptic normal closed subgroup is solvable-by-compact. Finally, we show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, second countable [SIN]-group has finite asymptotic dimension, if all of its discrete quotients are so.

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with locally graded groups whose subgroups are either subnormal or soluble of bounded derived length, say d. In particular, we prove that every locally (soluble-by-finite) group with this property is either soluble or an extension of a soluble group of derived length at most d by a finite group, which fits between a minimal simple group and its automorphism group. We also classify all the finite non-abelian simple groups whose proper subgroups are metabelian.

Abstract:The recent developments in the study of topological multi-boundary entanglement in the context of 3d Chern-Simons theory (with gauge group $G$ and level $k$) suggest a strong interplay between entanglement measures and number theory. The purpose of this note is twofold. First, we conjecture that the 'sum of the negative powers of the quantum dimensions of all integrable highest weight representations at level $k$' is an integer multiple of the Witten zeta function of $G$ when $k \to \infty$. This provides an alternative way to compute these zeta functions, and we present some examples. Next, we use this conjecture to investigate number-theoretic properties of the Rényi entropies of the quantum state associated with the $S^3$ complement of torus links of type $T_{p,p}$. In particular, we show that in the semiclassical limit of $k \to \infty$, these entropies converge to a finite value. This finite value can be written in terms of the Witten zeta functions of the group $G$ evaluated at positive even integers.

We prove a variational principle for topological entropy of saturated sets for systems which have the specification property and uniform separation property. Abstract:Entropy of measure preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are the ones given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein-Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein-Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

A Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general groups

Abstract:We give a new categorical approach to the Halmos-von Neumann theorem for actions of general topological groups. As a first step, we establish that the categories of topological and measure-preserving irreducible systems with discrete spectrum are equivalent. This allows to prove the Halmos-von Neumann theorem in the framework of topological dynamics. We then use the Pontryagin and Tannaka-Krein duality theories to obtain classification results for topological and then measure-preserving systems with discrete spectrum. As a byproduct, we obtain a complete isomorphism invariant for compactifications of a fixed topological group.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the definition of entropy for a partial $\mathbb{Z}$-action. We show that the definition of partial entropy is an extension of the definition of topological entropy for a $\mathbb Z$-action. We also prove that the partial topological entropy is concentrated on the non-wandering set.

Abstract:We study a family of metrics on Euclidean space that generalize the left-invariant metric of the SOL group and the metric of the logarithmic model of Hyperbolic space. Suppose G is a connected, simply-connected, Heintze group of Abelian type with diagonalizable derivation or the horospherical product of two such groups. In this scenario, G is isometric to Euclidean space with a metric of the type considered. We have derived a formula for the volume entropy of metrics in this family and used it to solve a conjecture related to a family of 3-manifolds that interpolates between the SOL group and hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Abstract Packing topological entropy is a dynamical analogy of the packing dimension, which can be viewed as a counterpart of Bowen topological entropy. In the present paper we give a systematic study of the packing topological entropy for a continuous G -action dynamical system $(X,G)$ , where X is a compact metric space and G is a countable infinite discrete amenable group. We first prove a variational principle for amenable packing topological entropy: for any Borel subset Z of X , the packing topological entropy of Z equals the supremum of upper local entropy over all Borel probability measures for which the subset Z has full measure. Then we obtain an entropy inequality concerning amenable packing entropy. Finally, we show that the packing topological entropy of the set of generic points for any invariant Borel probability measure $\mu $ coincides with the metric entropy if either $\mu $ is ergodic or the system satisfies a kind of specification property.

Abstract:We explore the relationship between Turing completeness and topological entropy of dynamical systems. We first prove that a natural class of Turing machines that we call "regular Turing machines" (which includes most of the examples of universal Turing machines) has positive topological entropy. We deduce that any Turing complete dynamics with a continuous encoding that simulates a universal machine in this class is chaotic. This applies to our previous constructions of Turing complete area-preserving diffeomorphisms of the disk and 3D stationary Euler flows. The article concludes with an appendix written by Ville Salo that introduces a method to construct universal Turing machines that are not regular and have zero topological entropy.
